I have been a loyal customer to this store particularly since my podiatrist originally referred me to them years ago and as a result have in the past received 10 percent off on all my shoe purchases. Today I came in and was informed I couldn't get the 10 percent off unless I had an actual prescription from my podiatrist each time I make a purchase. You expect me to visit my podiatrist every time im in the market for a new shoe? I came in here this past Thursday thinking it'd take longer to find my perfect pair of shoes than it actually did The staff in here is truly efficient and knowledgeable. I'm usually a N*ke girl (bleeped out to respect New Balance :) ), but my family has spoken highly of this brand, and this store is close to my apartment. I came in here fully expecting to just politely browse and leave, and go back to buying the brand I'm used to. I was greeted by Matt, and I told him I was looking for running shoes. He took me to the back of the small store, where I stood on a little machine that showed where my pressure points were in my feet (this was only my second time getting *fitted* for running shoes, and the first store I went to did not do this, so I was impressed!). He showed me three pairs of shoes that might work best with my particular feet, and within 6 minutes I'd found my perfect pair. I was in-and-out of here so quickly and didn't feel pressured to make my purchase. I just felt comfortable and like I'd found a great pair of shoes. This used to be my go to place for shoes. I have problem feet and wear orthotics. The last few times I've been in here, the service has been questionable. I came in three weeks ago looking for new running shoes. Please keep in mind the shoes cost over $150. The clerk did not have shoes in my size so she tried, without asking, to give me a larger size and a narrower width. I was a little perturbed to say the least. Why would I spend this much money for shoes that do not fit properly? I asked them to order shoes for me in my correct size. It's been over three weeks and I have yet to hear from them. In the meantime, I was able to find great shoes in my correct size at Fleet feet in old town. They did their best to make sure I was fitted correctly. After finishing 5 marathons, 6 half marathons and God only knows how many other races, this is the ONLY store where I will buy my shoes. I've tried running with other brands, and I've always ended up with another pair of New Balances. The staff will always do what they can to accommodate all sorts of athletes. If you're new to running and you're unsure of where to start, you'll be asked some basic questions on your activity level, pressure points and anything else that can determine what short of shoe you ought to wear. There's even some equipment, in the back, that will also assess how you distribute your weight. I cannot stress this enough, but NOT ALL SHOES ARE THE SAME. Just because a shoe looks "cool" doesn't necessarily mean that's the shoe to fit your needs. However, since this is a store that specializes in New Balances, you'll have a greater selection of shoes and leave a happy customer. I am a New Balance fan and have been wearing them for years for running. I also wear them for a very physical job. I went to buy a replacement pair, and accidentally bought the wrong model. I wore them to work, and they caused pain and blisters. 10 days later, I brought them back, thinking I was going to have to shell out another $100+ Ahmed was quick to respond, and replaced the shoes with the right model, and it only cost me the difference of the price in the shoes. Wow! This little store is a TREASURE!! Gui (Store Manager) and his staff perform every possible analytic test on your feet before they recommend what shoes you should buy. Kind and patient, like going to the doctor without an appointment. New Balance, as runners know, are probably the last running shoe manufacturer in America. Limited New Balance offerings in a prime running location. For what it's worth, New Balance has opened some interesting concept stores in major cities. There is a popular in-store cafe in Madrid, and New York's 5th Avenue NYC store features a custom sneaker lab, and NYC's Columbus Circle store is at the hub of competitive NYC running. In contrast, Lincoln Park Chicago just has shoes ... and clothing. Not much in terms of special Chicago-specific shoes, and there don't seem appear to be regularly scheduled store-sponsored local runs a la Nike. Also disagree with New Balance's display practice of stuffing shoes with a plastic expander that makes it impossible for a customer to tell exactly how light a running shoe might be. These are the issues that make a brand-specific store susceptible to showrooming. Sorry, guys. read more

Parking Lincoln Park is notoriously rough, but this spot is worth the hike. Knowledgeable staff - the guy helping me remembered a model of shoe that hasn't been made in years. They have a great selection, including the crosstrainers that I'd be eyeing online and didn't expect to find in a running store. Tried em on and was immediately pleased, and felt great about wearing them out of the store with a 30 day return policy. For what it's worth, the NB minimus 40s are EVERYTHING I was missing from my metcons. Stable enough for all but the heaviest work, and waaay more flexible for sprints and jumps. You walk funny, so my husband says, "sorta like a duck" yes, he's right. The New Balance store confirmed it also with a video of my stride on a treadmill. Being a value conscious purchaser I seek out good deals, and I shop hard. But sometimes this isn't the best way to go for everything, not when it comes to your feet. I like to walk a lot, especially when I travel, and it seems lately I've noticed a trend. My feet hurt, and I end up buying shoes wherever I go. I can hold a shoes from around the world exhibit. London, Vegas, NYC, etc., not because I'm trying to do a shoe challenge with Imelda, but instead, I'm buying stuff without professional help, that's help for my feet, some say I need to treat the other extremity. Bottom line, they will help you find the right shoe, no it's not cheap, some things in life aren't. If you have the ideally shaped foot and manage not to walk like a duck even though your human, maybe you don't need this place, but I do. Just pull out your shoes and look, if they're worn unevenly or you complain you can't walk around for a few hours, you need to pay them a visit. Absolutely terrible customer service. I bought three pairs of shoes. Put 250 miles on the first . No issues. The second I wore a week and the left sole came off. Tried to get a replacement and was treated so rudely I tried to get help online. So be careful. Shoes can only be returned or replaced within 30 days. Both the rabid sales person at the store and the corporate online refuse to fix a defective shoe. This is very uncool. I am on my 11th pair in 3 years given the heavy walking I do. NO I do not test all of them within 30 days. This lousy service is unlike Ferragamo , Allen Edmunds, and Addidas. All of whom have replace shoes that have failed. I sent a pic of all 11 pairs. To show which have been worn and where and when they fail. Sorry but. Shoe bought six months ago and worn less than 20 miles should not fail or the heal come off. I don't even bother looking at the shoes on the racks on the walls because the sales staff are always knowledgeable enough to tell me which shoe is best suited for my feet (and how I walk, etc) and my needs (running, walking, whatever). And even though I suffer from plantar fasciitis (arch issues) and wear special orthopedics in my running shoes, the guy who helped me today knew all about the issue, had me walk up and down barefoot so he could get a good read on my foot, then brought me several pairs of shoes to try on with my orthopedic. He even measured my foot out - something that I've only had done here and when I was a kid with a growing foot. He even laced the shoes a special way to improve the fit. Superior service. So I recently started personal training sessions (I can't decide if I am diong this because I love myself or hate myself) and needed some new shoes in the worst possible way. Finding the right kind of shoes for me is difficult. I have had surgeries on my right knee and still have a great degree of patellar instability - and now my left knee is getting in on the fun too. Lucky me! Since I have really just been doing the elliptical trainer and a few machines for the past several years, shoes were not super important and I just got running shoes. Now that I am being put through a series of medieval torture moves (supposedly called "exercises"), I need some serious lateral support for my ankles and knees. I went to two different Sports Authority locations. Lakeview was a waste of time. I got someone really knowledgeable and helpful and nice at the downtown location (I'd like to give a shout-out to Luke - you rock!) but the selection of cross trainers was not great. And I felt like Goldilocks. This one is too narrow and this one is too wide - but where the h*ll is the one that fits just right? At the New Balance store, apparently. I was greeted right away when I walked in last night. The man helping me (don't think I got his name) asked questions about what I needed, what I do, etc. and then watched my gait as I walked toward and away from him. I tried on a few cross trainers and found the pair I liked best and then tried that pair with a few different inserts. Wow! I don't think I realized how much I over- pronate until I walked in the right shoe with the right insert. It's crazy! I went home and looked at the heels on all of my shoes and was kind of blown away. So - I got the best fitting shoes I have ever had. The staff was knowledgeable and hepful and the place had a decent selection of cross trainers which are much tougher to find than running shoes. To top it all off, I had fun playing fetch with Sassy, the dog in residence. What a great end to a truly frustrating couple of weeks looking for shoes. read more

For my whole life I just bought whatever gym shoes looked cool at the store. I had no real brand loyalty, no clue if it was the "right shoe" for my foot or activity style, or if it was even well-built. I finally decided to be smart and get properly fitted for gym shoes so I visited the New Balance store in Lincoln Park. I was quite pleased with the result: Andrew, the manager, asked a serious of questions, had me walk on a treadmill to assess my range of motion, and used a digital pressure pad to see what sort of support I needed. We tried on a few different shoes (that all fit wonderfully) and eventually ordered a shoe that I liked. Honestly, I can't see myself not returning for another pair when these wear out. The service was great, the shoes are excellent (and made in America), and the pricing is inline with the competition. I've never worn New Balance before, but I found myself in need of a new pair of running shoes and wasn't thrilled with my last pair of Brooks, so I thought I'd try a different brand. I headed over to New Balance mainly because I had a meeting in the neighborhood and figured that if I was already in the area, I might as well stop in and see what they had to offer. The service I received was exceptional. Andrew helped me find the perfect pair of shoes. He took some time to get an idea of what I would be using the shoes for, asking me questions about my usual distance and my running goals. He also asked about my current shoes - brand, size, why I chose them, what I liked and didn't like about them, etc. He then measured my feet and put me on the treadmill to see my gait. Then it was time to try shoes. The pair he recommended fit and felt great, so he had me try them out on the treadmill to make sure that they really were as comfortable as they seemed. The awesome service didn't stop when I paid for my shoes. He gave me great some advice, since I mentioned that I was just starting to get back into running again. We talked about gear, how to know if it is time to replace shoes or other gear, and he mentioned some running groups that meet at the store if I ever want to meet other runners and want some company on my runs. When I was ready to leave, he gave me a bottle of water and his card, in case I had any questions in the future. He let me know that if I had any problems with my new shoes, then I should feel free to contact him or stop by the store. My new shoes are great and make me excited to be running again. I will be paying this store another visit when it is time for a replacement or some new gear. read more

This store is awesome. It is located in the middle of everything and the prices are reasonable. They have a large selection of every type of active shoe that you are looking for. I bought a new pair of shoes today and the staff took the time to talk to me about what I was looking for, watched my walk to see if I had an arch or not, and recommended a few different shoes that would fit my interests. This store also has a selection of active gear other than shoes. They have gloves, hats, coats, etc for the active person who has the guts to run outside. Echo everything the other reviewers said about these guys being laid back and very honest about what you need. I'm not a big fan of Sports Authority or Feet Fleet, too little attention at the first and way too pushy at the latter. So, when it came time for me to upgrade to a better running shoe, I decided to go to the source. I admit that I was attracted to Feet Fleet's fancy tech and their promise to "analyze your gait" with their treadmill, etc., but I'm on FitnessMagazine.com so often that I know that all you need is someone to take a good look at your walk and if you want to get fancy you can wet your foot and step on a paper bag to gauge your arch. I went in to New Balance fully intending to force myself into the new hot pink 769s, regardless of whether they were the right shoe, because I like flashy things. But, I decided that I should at least consider addressing some of the issues I've developed from my Adidas (like shin splints and blisters on the lift of my arch. I went in and explained the issues I was having to the sales guy, without making any mention of the flashy 769s that I was coveting. I told him I needed something super-light, without too much arch support. He asked me to walk barefoot across the store and measured my feet. Right away, he went to the 769s on the wall and said they were the best pair for me. Though the 1000s get better ratings by runners, offer a lot of support and cost at least $20-$50 more, he said they just weren't what I needed. I liked that he really listed to what I said, and took the time to explain why the 769s gave me what I needed and why the other long-distance shoes just wouldn't offer those features. There's no upsell here, which I loved. I was also happy that the shoes I wanted actually ended up being the ones I needed. I'd give these guys five stars, but their inventory is somewhat limited due to the small store size. They make up for this buy offering to order the shoes and have them sent to the store or to your home for free. Shipping takes about a week, which I don't love, but in the end the whole experience was great. read more

Although I wear orthotics to relieve the pain of plantar fasciitis, my Nike running shoes were not getting the job done. I needed to pair my orthotics with a better pair of running shoes. I had read some of the reviews here and noticed that some flat footed people had some success with New Balance. To make a long story short, I came down here and got myself a pair. Once I received a high level of personal service, I did not bother to do any price comparisons on the internet. I bought the shoes right then and there. I also came to find out that they have a store in Schaumburg on Golf Road, so that may be a better option for those that live on the NW Burbs. read more

You can buy a pair of New Balance just about anywhere that sells name-brand shoes. The purpose of a specialty store, however, is service. As a city-dweller, I do a lot of walking, and I noticed after moving to the city that my shoes just weren't cutting it (they really hadn't been cutting it before, either, but it became much more apparent when I moved to Chicago). I even had a couple pair of New Balance in my pre-Chicago days but something just wasn't right. With that, I decided to throw caution to the wind and I headed up to Lincoln Park where one of the four area New Balance Stores is located. I did this in hopes that the staff there were more than just careless, minimum-wage sales goons. As it turns out, they weren't. Upon entering, I was warmly greeted and asked what, specifically, brought me in. In short order I was measured, fitted and trying on some of the most comfortable shoes I had ever worn. Why, you might ask, were they so comfortable by comparison? Because I had been wearing the wrong size shoes for an unknown number of years, and the shoes I was wearing over that period weren't made for what I was using them for. Problem solved! So now, whenever I need a new pair of skids, I'll hop on up to Lincoln Park and see the kids at the New Balance Store who always get me into a great pair of shoes in a very friendly way. A quick caveat: You can find New Balance shoes for less money at other retailers or online. The prices at the NB store are generally MSRP and not discounted. Although they do mark items down when they begin to phase them out, I've never personally seen any sort of revolving Sale event there. Part of what you are paying for is the service, which in my experience, has been worth it. If you don't really care about the service, you may not be quite as satisfied as I have been. read more

Went here for the first time to return some shoes my friend bought... and it was a hefty $200+ return paid in cash. I work in retail, and know cash returns this large can be a hassle so I was already expecting a little annoyance from the person doing the return but to my pleasant surprise... THEY WERE AMAZING! The guy handled the return so genuinely friendly and was very warm. I actually had a third pair to return to them but didn't have it in me to go return that one too. We just went to the New Balance Store and and bought a few pairs of shoes from a very knowledgeable young man, Alex H. He was patient, well informed regarding the product and the inventory and was a good ambassador for the company. He even let me try the two pairs of shoes I was interested in on the in-store treadmill to see which one was more comfortable for that function. My husband was so pleased with the shoe Alex helped him select, we came back the following week to buy the same one including foot insoles in a different color, upgraded to leather. Plus, Alex convinced us to try the cushioned New Balance Socks, ankle height, and they were very comfortable to wear and easy to put on. I am a diabetic and I found them comfortable to wear overnight to keep my feet warm without constricting my feet. Kings called me and let me know a special order came in. That didn't work out, but she found the perfect pair for me instore. She had always helped us tremendously on all our visits.
