She and the other male employee who has black curly hair refused to help me out and dismissed me. Courtney said, "We cannot help you out. You cannot exchange the shoes. Sorry" in a VERY RUDE manner. Just to let you know that I did not have a good experience with your employees. This made me feel very uncomfortable dealing with the DSW employees at the Lakeview store. Especially when there were other customers waiting in line. I felt very embarrassed. This happened on 5:35 pm Sunday, 7/14/2024. Joseph searched on the DSW website, it says that "DSW accepts returns after 90 days with a receipt of shipping invoice for a merchandise credit. This applies regardless of the original payment method." I have been a DSW customer for some time. I love the store, the products that DSW sells. However, this experience shows a stark and severe contrast to my previous experiences. As a loyal customer of DSW, this surprised me. It really did.

I needed to return the shoes, so I shipped them back using FedEx. However, FedEx attempted delivery three times but couldn't deliver the package to the store. The package was in the process of being returned to me when FedEx lost it. Once it was found and returned to Vitalia, the store said they needed to file a damage claim with FedEx. The entire process took months and required active engagement but I was finally issued a refund.

I found the most comfortable pair of sneakers I've ever tried when we were there last week. I've worn them every day since. Normally, if I need shoes (a few times a decade) I end up at Kohl's. The prices here are comparable but since it is locally owned, I would much rather give them my business. Ironically, I walked out buying something and my wife did not. They have all kinds of styles, American and imports - and a strong selection of dress/work shoes. Evidentally the same family has been operating this store from the same location for 37 years now, now being run by a guy named Bill and his brother, and taken over from their father. Perhaps more of note are the prices. I went to DSW recently to buy a few pairs of dress shoes, found nothing that I could walk comfortably in - and everything was pretty pricey. If the average decent shoe I tried on at DSW was 90-135$ - it is of note that at Athenian the prices for the same styles and designers were averaging 49-89$. Hugeness. So, a chronically pissed off shoe customer like myself walked out 20 minutes after I walked in with sweet pairs of Giorgio Brutini and Stacy Adams for about 130$ total. Giggity. The place is a hidden treasure. Go with immediacy.

The proprietor was really friendly and welcoming, even as she was very busy (she was the only one in the shop and there were a few customers that came in during the short time I was here). There are three sections to the store and I thought it was just the front, so make sure to head back. She has lots of shoes but she also sells some other accessories too, like jewelry and gloves. It's unfortunate for me that my feet are huge, so it's very rare that I find shoes in a store like this that would actually fit me. However, she does carry a line (at least sometimes!) that sells shoes in sizes 11-13. They even had a few baby shoes and a handful of baby onesies. Given the location, there's no parking except for the street.

In the city of Chicago, you are a charged a bag tax, in order to discourage the use of plastic bags. As such, I brought my own reusable shopping bag, to carry my items out of the store. When I found a pair of shoes I liked, I put them in my reusable shopping bag to hold as I continued my rounds around the store. The manager approached me and communicated that it was not ok to do this. I explained that I intended on purchasing them, but was just using the bag to carry them around the store as I continued my search, instead of carrying them in my hand. I asked if he would rather I hold them in my hand. He said he could hold the shoes at the front. I really did not like that interaction, the way he spoke to or treated me, and his lack of understanding, but ultimately, I understood and cooperated. Despite this interaction, I continued to look for shoes. I found another pair, that I was now holding in my hand and was not in the bag. The manager approached me again and this time told me I had to leave the store because I had put the original pair of shoes in my reusable bag. Mind you, this entire time, I had never so much as gone near the exit of the store. I was simply looking at shoes, more toward the back. With the manager ready to escort me out of the store, I approached the check out area stating that I wanted to buy the shoes. He said I needed to go and it was a corporate policy. I asked if I could talk to his boss. He stated that he was the manager, or maybe even a position higher than that ( I don't recall the title) and that there was no one else I could talk to. I said "how does that make sense, that you are a store and you don't want me to buy these shoes" (the ones being held at the counter and the ones that were in my hand). I had to argue with him about buying shoes in a shoe store! Finally he agreed, and a cashier rung up the pair of shoes I had in my hand ( which I only purchased because they were on clearance and the last ones, and this was the day before the occasion I needed them for-Easter, so I was on a time crunch). He said that he could give me a customer service number to call. I asked his name, and he said Fernando. Who knows if it truly was his name. After I purchased the shoes I said "is it ok to put them in my bag now?" I was treated like a criminal and I bought the shoes anyway. I was so upset, that for the first time ever I called a customer service line to file a complaint. Naturally they listened to appease me, and I gave my contact information for follow up, but ultimately no follow up and nothing was done. Needless to say I will never return.

It's also in a strip mall with a bunch of other stores, such as Dollar Tree and Joann Fabrics. The staff were kind. I chose 4 stars because, although it has the types of shoes I was looking for, it doesn't have a big variety of colors or certain types of shoes. They also have a co-op mentality where you can own a piece of the store. They also are able to have things on sale and clearance because they also buy back used items and you get it for more than half the price off. I love the store because it's also right on a waterfront where you have a walk and you have artistic chairs and lots of geese and people come fishing. It's a wonderful location. I consider myself a fairly tall, well dressed, courteous, female adult. However, the usual greeting that I have received at other stores was totally absent at the J Crew Southport location. In fact, the cashier seemed to take it personally that I requested a paper receipt and proceeded to dangle it mid-air as if she was afraid that our fingers might touch. What poor customer service here. The employees who were there today could use a lot more customer service & diversity training. I'm sure that J Crew would not want to be represented in this way.
