Dumpy ghetto Indian place near Fraser and 42nd that sure looks popular. Parking is available behind the restaurant (looks like 1-2 spots), as well as on the side streets. The place looks like it's falling apart. Almost looks like a hoarder's home. Definitely not for the claustrophobic. They sell mostly desserts, but they do have food as well. Looks like a mom and pop run the place. The strange thing is that the price difference between dine in and takeout is quite large (takeout being cheaper). I can see why everyone was lining up, but almost nobody actually sat at the tables. There also a sandwich board showing some really cheap food, but based on the rather inconsistent pricing I didn't bother asking. I had the lamb curry. Comes with naan or rice. Not bad, but it was seriously oily. The other problem is that it's on the small side. Thought I had found a competitor to Tandoori Palace on Commercial, but it was not to be. Wouldn't mind coming back at some point, though there are other options in the vicinity. read more

This is an updated review since my last one was 7 years ago. The venue is still here and it's still busy. There's always a steady stream of customers, I've never seen this place empty. Customers are Indian and not, meaning everyone comes here. It's at two large streets so it's convenient. Street parking out front is now pay parking. This restaurant recently had a small renovation so it's not so ghetto - they fixed the front door/wall. They follow covid rules. Place is fairly clean. Vegetable samosas are constantly being turned out, if you want meat samosas you'll need to wait a bit or just call in. When you order the premade pepper pakora, bread pakora etc. laid out on the counter the owner (?) dude always asks if you want it heated which is good service. I recommend heating it only if you're eating it right away, otherwise do it at home. It's interesting this guy mans the front 90% of the time I'm here, he neither smiles nor frowns he just does his job, probably 6days a week!?? Anyway it's good to see a familiar face and expect reliable service. I ordered butter chicken recently, I liked it quite a bit. Most places make it more creamy (cream) this place makes it more tangy (tomatoe) so it was a nice change. It also had just the right amount of spice for my taste, creamy versions tend to be less spicy I find. Price for this is a typical 10ish bucks and it comes with naan or rice. read more

I've never given such a poor review and feel badly for it but this food should not have been sent out. The layer of oil and grease had to be spooned off and reduced the quantity by half. I did try a taste and the oil tasted off, rancid? I've never tasted rancid oil so I'm not honestly sure. The bag was greasy and I did not want to eat this meal. I did order through Uber and have contacted them for assistance. I strongly feel this should not have been served. I'm not a happy camper at the money lost. read more

This is great authentic and well priced Indian food. Their samosas are the best! It's so good.

If I could give 0 stars I would. We stumbled on this place on our way to granville island and I wanted a cup of tea. This place couldn't even do something as basic as a masala chai right. Honestly this is the worst tea I've ever tasted, obviously couldn't drink more than a sip and threw the rest. It was watery and felt like they forgot to put the basic ingredient which is chai patti (tea) We also got pakora which were very salty and kinda stale. Worst place ever! read more

We have gone here for years and years for Samosa and figured it was time for a review. Keep in mind, you may have to wait while they make them for you fresh, but it's worth it. We usually get the veggie ones and also some onion bahji or aloo gobi fritters which are sold by the pound. The sauces with tamarind are my fave but they also make a green minty sauce. More than sometimes the guy behind the counter is 'gruff', so I like to kill him with kindness if you get my drift. Kinda like the soup guy from Seinfeld But it's worth it as the samosa are cheap!! read more

The sweets can be sold per pound. When i asked about the price, the guy told me "some are 10$/lb, some are 8, some are 7", but they don't put those with same price together and they don't have price labels either. If you want to get assorted ones, they dont let you choose the types you want, and they tend to give you those roundish or mitochondria-shaped ones soaked wet in sirop, which are the heaviest and also overly sweet. The box is weighted together with the sweets too. Samosas are dry and saturated with oil. Veggie samosas only contain seasoned potatos and a few green peas. Chicken samosas are better. I also found their samosas ranked worst in a local contest. But they are really cheap, so quality per price ratio isnt bad. read more

We picked up some veggie samosas today. DELISH! and definitely priced right. The samosas were freshly made so the outer shell was crispy and crunchy! the inside was piping hot and SO good!! They are a good size snack. about the size of a man's fist for $0.75 each for veggie. they also have beef and chicken for $1.00 each. And you cannot forgot to get a side of the Tamarind Chutney for $0.50. two thumbs up! read more

Unhygenic impolite disorganized and bloody rude that's what I tell of this place Used to be an occasional customer but now I avoid it like the plague It all started when I found a hair in one of the sweets and I just asked the lady handling the cash and the food without gloves to replace it( didn't ask for a refund) as I like to support family businesses.ignored how they handled the ice of my lassi with bare hands as they carried it from the car as they ran out on a hot day. But I was shocked to see the response. She screams at me and complains that the hair must be on the raw materials and not from them. All I had asked was a different piece of dessert from wat I was offered. Anyways this family doesn't know how to do business and has zero food safe sense. I haven't entered that place since. Definitely not a familiar food for me when it comes to sweets. We tasted about a pound of sweet treats and found them all granular, oily and lacking in flavor. On the higher rated side, we did get a butter chicken dish and a lamb vindaloo dish which were savory and flavorful, however lacked the detail and attention that we have experienced at many other establishments. We also purchased the chicken, beef and vegetable samosas. The chicken and beef were dry and lacked spice and flavor. The vegetable samosas would be the only reason why we may return. This not so secret Fraser St yum shop does all the wonderful India sweets but also meals. Best of all is their deal in samosas 2 veg/$1 and $1 chicken or beef. Mmmmm - I really should celebrate Diwali every year now that I know about it :) This is our second Indian stop this weekend and with a festival, I had a good excuse to eat samosas!! We picked this came here after talking to Reena M. who recommended it as good cheap samosas in Vancouver. The place is small and a bit dive-y looking but everything was very fresh. Service is so-so... they don't chat much to you and aren't that friendly. No problem - I waited about 5-10 minutes for my order and it was yummy! Ordered some veggie samosas and a dozen of the beef. Mmmmm. Fresh, nice exterior and spicy filling. The veggie ones are 2 for $1 and the beef and chicken ones are $1 each. The pakora looked very tasty but I'm also trying not to get fat so have to save those for next time! They have a ton of sweets to choose from. I don't really care for indian sweets so I have no opinion on those, but the samosas are definitely worth coming for! This is just a to-go place since there are no tables here. read more

This place is exactly the type of Indian restaurant I love. A main area for take-out and a small dine-in area off to the side. I've been here several times and I usually get the meat (chicken) or veggie thali. It's always fresh, the spicing is just right and the naan is to die for. Service is always good too. They also have a large selection of sweets, pakoras, etc. as well for take-out. All in all a great place. read more

as everyone says the pakoras and veggie samosas are to die for .... price has gone up to $.75 a samosa ... but for the quality and taste its still worth it. I can remember WAY back (10 plus years ago) when they were only $.25 cents each! .... my how times change ;) the pakoras are really really good and the price is $5 a pound ... I usually get a half pound for $2.50 and that hits the spot. the sweet sauce for $1 or $.50 is a must IMO and I highly reccomend you try it for both the pakoras and the samosas. service is good ... wish they were a bit more friendly. the massive selection of sweets is not for me ... but I know its a great selection and pulls people in just for that. I have had the Channa Masala in the past and liked it but it was not up to the same level as the other items I mentioned. read more

This review is a 4 star out of 5, based on the food, not the service and certainly not the ambiance, or lack there of. Mmmm the chutney! I have gotten take-out from this place at least 30 times, though it has been over a year since I went here. They make many traditional Indian sweets, which look amazing, but I go for the veggie samosa's and veggie pakora. For that food, I gave a 4 star rating. If I was rating on the customer service, it would be a 1 for sure. I only go there to pick up some yummy inexpensive food and not to have my butt kissed, so I don't mind so much that the fellow there never smiles or says hello or even thank you. Meh. read more

I have lived in the south hill area for years, like to support the small ethnic multi cultural restaurant 's in the area. I was not impressed with the service, lack of apathy with the male counter person(owner) My take out order was not correct, I should not have to get in an argument with them to correct the order and the price. Take out /website menu different from eat in menu, how confusing is that? Service was very slow, I called in the order walked over 10 minutes later, still waited 30 minutes, people behind me in line were served before me take out or eat in. The butter chicken was too, sweet, naan bread poor quality, rubbery. Lucky for me I live in and area with 12 Indian restaurant's, I won't go back here, ever. I first heard about this place almost a decade ago when I was waiting for the bus by the dollar store. An elderly gentleman said that I looked like a nice lady and gave me his card saying that he was the owner while pointing out to an awkward man by the store entrance saying that was his son and I should come by. I wasn't single but my husband and I enjoy sharing a chili chicken as the portions for it is quite big and very delicious! Their snacks are okay. Their samosas are at 50 cents each. The quality is okay. Their service is rude. I called to inquire about samosa prices for an event I held, and the guy was so rude on the phone. Then I went in and the guy behind the counter shows no hospitality or friendly service. This place is awesome. I have been here a few times to fill up my box with sweets for parties for friends. This has been my go to place lately, especially since some of my friends are throwing early holiday parties that are in the area. This place smells like a sweet shop in India. The quality is great, and the service can be improved, but hey, you are buying delicious tasting sugar. Get what you need and get out. This is not a fancy gelato place that you can try stuff out, but trust me, there are sweets (Mithai) here that will make you salivate. You will need to grab a few just for the road on the way home, and then enough for your family members. Arrived into the restaurant during noon, no employee was seen on site. I rang the service bell continuously for 15 minutes until one of the employees came out of the back. They were clearly dazed as if they had just abruptly awoken from a nap. The Samosa also sucked. Essentially, I had the same experience as Troy. I'd been working near Al Tandoori on Victoria, and could think of nothing but their samosas the entire shift. For some reason they were closed, so I hopped on the bus to Fraser, grabbed some groceries and went to Al Watan. No samosas there. They directed me up to 41st and as I walked I decided to try some pakora instead. The restaurant was welcome relief from the heat outside, and seemed like it would be a nice place to relax. The seating area is a seperated from the sweets counter, entrance, and cashier. It looked spacious without a soul in sight. I, however, was in a rush to get some work done at home so ordered a pakora and a coke to go. The woman at the till was not unpleasant. She asked what I wanted, told it to the kitchen, and when it was done told me the total. That was the extent of our interaction. The pakora hit the spot on an empty stomach, but was not as good as the ONLY other time I've had it. Not much to compare it to but subjectively, it was good but nothing special. read more

Ok place for food. They mention free naan with any dish but dont provide. Every other restaurant in fraser provides that. Gave me tikki without any chutney. Again mentioned, but not provided. The quantity is quite small for a veg/non veg dish take out. Not even good for one person. There are many other indian restaurants in fraser who provide sumptuous food for 2 meals in 12/13$. I was craving samosas so I checked Yelp and decided on New Bhaia Sweets. I ordered 3 veggie samosas. Very affordable, they were .75 cents each. Filled with potatoes and peas with some spice. Not very doughy (which is good). They were very good. I would definitely get gain. read more
