I went to the New Brunswick Train Station because I was attending a conference at the Heldrich, and given the choice between driving in New Brunswick and not driving in New Brunswick, the prior will always win. Add on the fact that overnight parking at the hotel was more than a round trip ticket on the train and the choice was obvious. You don't argue with the system. You simply show up and hope it behaves. Three stars. It did what it was supposed to do, which is more than can be said for many institutions. The trains arrive and depart with reasonable competence along the Northeast Corridor, carrying students, commuters, and the mildly confused. The station sits in a useful place, close to Rutgers University and the hospitals, which makes it feel important even when it looks a little tired. Inside, there is a waiting room with limited hours, as if patience itself has a schedule. The bathrooms...exist. That is the kindest thing I can say about them. Downstairs, a Dunkin' offers coffee that tastes exactly like every other cup you have ever had, which is a small comfort in an unpredictable world. People often wander the platforms like explorers without a map. The signage does not so much guide as gently suggest. Elevators sometimes work and sometimes do not, which turns accessibility into a philosophical question rather than a guarantee. The place is not especially clean, not especially dirty, just lived in. Parking costs money, as expected. Nothing here surprises you, except perhaps how little it tries to. And yet, you get where you are going. Most of the time, that is enough. read more

I've used this station a few times. It's served by NJ Transit Northeast Corridor line trains. To my knowledge no Amtrak trains stop here. The station is nice in that it has a waiting room vs just a platform. It's not open all hours that trains stop at the station so if it is amazingly cold or hot out you may want to time your arrival accordingly if your train is departing outside the hours of 6:00am - 8:00pm Mon - Fri, or 7:00am - 8:00pm Sat - Sun. There is a ticket office open during these hours, otherwise buy your tickets from the machines on the platforms to avoid paying $5.00 more on the train. The waiting room has one small unisex bathroom. It's been a bit feral both times I've had to use it. Keep this in mind! There is a Dunkin Donuts on the ground level of the station, handy although I don't know how busy it gets during the weekly rush hour. There's also a flower shop in case you need those last minute surprises. For those who prefer boba tea, there is a Vivi Bubble Tea shop right near the station although it doesn't open until later in the morning, sorry am commuters! All in all it's a functional train station. I'm always glad when I find a station that has an actual waiting room vs just a platform with a roof over it. read more

Nice train station that is very popular with people who go to Rutgers and the Central Jersey community that go into New York for work or for play. I use this station when I come to NJ to visit family. The location is good, but parking is a nightmare! Either you have to pay or be lucky and find a spot on Easton Ave. There is a Dunkin' Donuts inside the station that certainly brings in a good amount of foot traffic. I also like this station because it is not far from the Raritan River, giving it a somewhat romantic feel. In addition, I like the fact that Amtrak trains can go through here at 125 mph, so you have an excellent railfanning opportunity, given the tracks the station sit on see a lot of rail traffic. When I was in high school, I loved going here and watching the evening rush of trains from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. I easily saw 30-40 trains in that span! Now I just wish Amtrak services the station a little more than just the two northbounds it sees. read more

Let me start by saying that this is the worst Amtrak station I have ever encountered. I typically do not ride the rails. So I am not a seasoned rider with Amtrak. However, I have travelled the world and have used many train stations in the past. The New Brunswick station is a dilapidated mess with staircases that are closed, passageway doors that are locked and the signage that is horrible. There is not one reference to Amtrak anywhere in or on the building (that I saw)so if you are unfamiliar with which side of the platform you need to be on, make sure you get there early because you might miss your train otherwise. I almost felt like I was in the wrong station, but I had remembered picking my daughter up from a DC trip many years ago! I was not the only passenger confused on the southbound train from New Brunswick to DC. There were many other "mice" trying to figure out the maze to the correct platform. Fortunately, I knew that Trenton was the same direction. Otherwise there is no reference to direction or Amtrak! Utterly ridiculous that there is not one Amtrak sign (maybe I'm a moron) in the whole station. I realize the station is a NJ Transit Station...but if they are allowing Amtrak to use it... Anyhow, that is my gripe. Good luck making your train if you are from out of town! read more

If not for help of kind resident, Earnest, I would of missed my train. I arrived early but there is zero visual markers regarding direction to appropriate tracks. Trains, etc. Only sign indicates Newark or Trenton. You have to run around to each track area to locate a kiosk that was not even operating properly. There is no signs regarding north bound or south bound train entry area directions from street level. I had to drag my suitcase up many stairs because I couldnt locate the elevator. The area on outside the building had arrow pointing up. But it was actually across the street in another building. There were no train employees any where in sight to ask for guidance Only area with employees was the ticket purchase area that if not for the kindness & assistance of Earnest was I able to locate. Traveling from Wash DC Union Station to New Brunswick Train station was. Culture shock. Will do my best to never travel to area where I need to utilize this station. read more

Oh NJ Transit, how I love and loathe you. The New Brunswick Train Station is my express stop on the Northeast Corridor NJTransit line. It runs directly into New York Penn. The other side will take you to Trenton/Philly. It is great to go to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, Rutgers College/College Ave, the Cancer Institute, and the State Theater. The station building always seems to have people behind the counter and they also have ticket machines on both platforms. The station has a new parking deck, but its not cheap. There is a walkway directly connected to the Trenton side of the station to get the commuters home more quickly. The ingress to the station- you can drop off at the tiny lot on Albany, right before Easton Ave. You can also drop off/pick up at the other end of the station on Little Albany St and Somerset, across from Kirkpatrick Chapel. Be a few minutes early - you have to run up two flights of stairs to get to the platform and the entrances/exits are narrow. If you enter from the station, there is an escalator. I really advise against the elevators unless you have lost all olfactory senses. Victory Cab HQ is around the corner, so there are always cabs here. You can find them in the Albany St lot, or off of Little Albany, under the overpass. The station building is old, small, and is usually kinda dirty. It iswell heated though and has a Dunkin Donuts and flower shop. The flower shop is actually really nice for being so tiny. The platform has a nice view of the really old Catholic church windows. I think it was built in 1865 or something. read more

The track is long so I prefer standing further down the end away from the crowd. The northbound side has an indoor area to wait as well as a ticket booth and ticket machine. This station is in major need of an overhaul. The building itself is old and gloomy. Looks like an abandoned and unkept station. For being in the middle of New Brunswick there is barely any police activity at night. There is a problem with bums and beggars convening at the station. The outside underpass is always leaking water and during the winter months you better pray you don't slip on ice and break a leg. There are no dedicated dropoff areas, which would be a good thing to have because of the large traffic in that area. During morning hours it's crowded with your daily commuters, after 10pm, forget it. It's loaded with bums and beggars. The elevator smells like piss you're better off climbing the atairs. Njtransit needs to update this station, at least heat the waiting area on the trenton side of the tracks. read more

My son used the train from there last week. He parked and locked his bicycle in the designated bicycle parking and was told it would be secure with security and cameras. No Frills station that I use to get to/from NY and NJ for family visits. Not a lot to the station itself, the most memorable thing for me was the Dunkin Donuts there, but the location of this station is great -- tons of food options within walking distance on the college campus, and if you need to wait, a large Barnes Noble next door with indoor and outdoor seating. Most people wait outside, but there is the option, and space, to wait inside. It's a small space though, and I rather not fight people to get through the doors when the train arrives. The train itself is comfortable, I always get a seat, it usually arrives on time, and it gets you where you are going on schedule. Good enough, as it gets me from Point A to Point B. read more

This is the one thing about New Brunswick that continues to make me scratch my head. With all the new developing and growth going on in New Brunswick, this place still looks and feels like a 1980's New York City subway station. I understand the desire to hold on to the historical aspect of the station as its almost 100 years old, BUT, that doesn't mean you can do some major refurbishing, cleaning and painting. The other issue is the fact that this place goes into straight up creep mode between the hours of 12am and 6pm. The station becomes a haven for the homeless and alcoholics between these hours and unfortunately the only people getting on or off the train at those hours are drunk people (not a good mix and a recipe for disaster). Bottom line, it doesn't look for feel safe. The only reason I didn't give this place 1 star is because the vibe and mood changes dramatically during the day as it's a heavy commuter station and most of the shady folks are gone during the day. Otherwise, this place is practically begging for 1 star. NJTransit, please realize that New Brunswick is a major transportation hub and you're doing additional disservice to your already mediocre train service by keeping the station in this condition. Oh NJ Transit...how you break my wallet...a strain station just like David and J.W. share. I am glad that they are renovating this station as it is badly in need of an upgrade. Looking forward to the updated train schedule program to make it to this station. Avoid the elevators unless you ABSOLUTELY need to use it and hold your breath. Also, trains do leave the station quickly after docking so give yourself time e.g., don't arrive downstairs right when the train does as you miss it. Frankly based on the now $26 dollar cost for you to get to NYC from here a better bet is to take the Coach USA bus that picks up across the street for $20 round trip and is faster unless you can catch the few express trains they run. The slow train takes 68 mins and the bus takes 60 mins or less. I've even gotten back to New Brunswick from NYC in as little as 45 mins. read more

Three stars seems about right, but the signs are confusing and inaccurate (there are actually ticket machines on the platforms in both directions, contrary to one sign). And the ticket machines themselves? Well, read my review of New Jersey Transit as a whole. So two stars it is. And it's sad, too, because I really like how old the platforms feel. I was actually happy to wait under the shelter of those rickety roofs when Hurricane Irene's first pitter-pattering raindrops fell. There were no leaks, not a one, so raindrops didn't keep falling on my head; and I was able to enjoy a phone conversation with my mom while I waited for the train, my friends' wedding, and a daring escape from the Eastern Seaboard. The reviews about the New Brunswick station make me laugh a bit. It's a train station! Of course, it's not going to be the most beautiful and presentable, but hey, you have to give it props to its location: it's right around Rutgers (oooh, college parties) and some nice restaurants and bars (oooh, college kids). There are also some people by the escalators by the Dunkin Donuts who beg for money... but that's to be expected. They're very respectful though, so I'm not too upset with that. The set of tracks that head to Trenton don't have an indoor seating area for some reason... However, the set of tracks that go towards NYC do. It's kind of weird and unfair, but it doesn't seem like an indoor seating area makes all the difference because it's still kind of gross. There's also a tunnel that connects the inbound and outbound tracks, which is pretty convenient. Overall feeling about the train station? It's a train station. read more

It was an expensive round trip ticket, I think about $30 each or more... No problems coming back late in the evening and easy in and out from the parking garage. read more

The construction that was to take "about one year" has been going on 13 months with very little progress. Three stars for providing the ideal way into and out of NB and NYC, 21 hours a day. I can't believe some reviewers suggest the bus as a viable alternative. Wouldn't that take twice as long? I can't afford that much time, when I am traveling up in this part of NJ/NY I am usually going someplace before a show starts or a sporting event or a dinner date. The train is speedy, reliable, comfortable, and spacious. I rather dislike the waiting for the train part, though, and here's where it gets dicey. There are no retail outlets except for a DD, a flower shop, and a taxi dispatcher. No place to charge your phone late at night. And they are doing construction under the bridge downstairs which makes pedestrian life difficult because it takes away 3 sidewalks and forces you to walk around the block just to switch to the other side of the tracks/underpass. The single occupancy bathroom is small and decrepit. I once pulled the door open on an angry local doing the sit down business, as he had neglected to lock the door. I didn't stay around for his lecture in bathroom etiquette, because I was more disgusted than he was. One plus of this location is that the cabs often pull up and wait here to whisk you into college town. Since it is a cabby HQ you'll never be stranded. One typical day, I was trying to board my train and I was subjected to all the sidewalk detouring from the construction and from a frustrating door that was locked from the inside, despite being the first and only option link between the inbound station/ticket office building and the opposite platform. I never thought I would have had to go back downstairs, outside and reenter the station from the shady rear entrance. By that time though, the entire staircases became mobbed at least six across by a flood of people exiting my train. No one bothered to move out of the way even though I was clearly trying to catch that train. This abruptly changing traffic flow in two directions would necessitate multiple exits for safety and efficiency. But instead, for the sake of keeping some semblance of clean, I guess security or janitorial personnel will decide to lock a certain entry/exit on a whim. The key is, especially if you are travelling southbound, to be here 5 minutes before the train does or else you will never be able to bypass the rush of people leaving NYC. The passageways between platforms should never be locked as long as this train station is open (which means, at least 21 hrs a day). Tip: Buy your tickets from the machine in advance to save $5 vs. paying cash on board. The machines accept cash, debit and credit. Unfortunately, there is no roundtrip discount anymore, but you can buy one way tickets for flexibility and as far as I know, they don't expire, unlike every other transit ticket I've bought, ever. read more

I can't say Methink not because in the end I know I'll use this station again. I recently started using the bus from East Brunswick, but sometimes the train is a better option....those times are usually when my brother's getting me on for free since he has a badge. It's crazy how the prices have pretty much doubled in the last 10 years and you can see not 1 cent of the money has gone towards maintaining the station. At least it's less awkward here then sitting with the homeless guy while waiting for a train at the Edison stop. Plenty of close by food options. read more

This is the train stop that you'll take if you're going to this university town (New Brunswick is actually a big, notable NJ city!). If you're coming from New York Penn Station, you have to make sure you listen close to announcements over the public system so you'll know you're already in New Brunswick----I noticed NJ trains don't show the names of the train stops on the small digital screens inside the trains (or I must have missed them every time I come these parts of NJ). The station is within walking distance to nearby historical buildings. I'm glad I can get a cup of coffee from one of the sellers inside the station. The station's relatively clean. And I get a sense that the whole place seems to be changing every time I find myself here.... read more

It's an average train station, but dirty and a magnet for the homeless who congregate right outside. There is a Dunkin Donuts and some random flower shop downstairs. There is an elevator but it reeks of urine, so only use it if absolutely necessary. They close the main waiting room and the entrances inside after 10pm, so if you have a train to catch after 10pm you have to use the stairs or elevator on the corner of George and Somerset streets. Trains going to NYC usually come on time, but in the other direction towards Trenton, it's hit or miss. It can take anywhere from 40 minutes on an express train to an hour on a local. I always take the train and get off here when visiting Rutgers or need to head back to the city. read more
