After settling down in this quaint little town many years ago the Mrs. (and her family) fell in love with New Great Wall and after decades of patronage... I've had little success in steering them in a different direction. ("Yeah, it was fine. But next time we should go back to New Great Wall..." - their stock reply if we ever do go somewhere else.) I'm not that adventurous when it comes to Chinese take-out. If a menu has 60 items/options - I've only tried a few of them and never deviate. New Great Wall has always been reliable with those staples of mine (it's flavorful, it's not too expensive, it's a solid portion). Does it seem like COVID knocked them off balance and they still haven't recovered? Yes, actually. (Even the Mrs. grudgingly admits it's not as great as she remembers.) The restaurant is clean. The crew behind the counter are always cool. Our orders are ready in a timely manner. They provide an overabundance of those individual flavor packets (except for the only one I really like - the hot mustard) and, like some other take-out spots, they always seem to short us on the complimentary fortune cookies. (Which means I miss out because I'd be a real creep if I took one and left one of my kids cookie-less, right?) The in-laws: 5 stars, case closed. Me? Out of all the Chinese restaurants in town (and yes... it was like pulling teeth but I did get the Mrs. to try them all with me at least once over the years!) - 'Tasty Fusion' is the best. So... New Great Wall will have to settle for my 4-stars. (But let's keep that between us, please. Otherwise it's the couch for me.) We have been weekly patrons of New Great Wall for about 30 years... well, sadly this is changing for us lately, as the quality of the food has changed too. We were certain that everything was of the best quality all these past years. My husband watched the children grow up in the business, and was always treated with the utmost respect. Often you get items for free past certain dollar amounts, but you must mention it to them as they don't willingly surprise you with your freebie like some other places. We frequently order chow mei fun, shrimp with lobster sauce, half chic with pork fried rice, sweet n sour chicken, beef sticks, and steamed dumplings. I was going to this restaurant for almost 30 years. And I know their food. I have been there only twice since Covid. I felt like having something small. I ordered a pt of Wonton soup and a pt of pork lo mein. When I got home the whole paper back was soaked with oil from the lo mein. At least the plastic bag caught it. The pork was very tough and had an off, oily taste. I dumped it. The Wonton soup was 5 Wonton and about 1/2 cup broth, no pork shreds. I asked for condiments. Nothing. A bag of about 1 tbsp noodles, no tea bag or fortune cookie. I get it times are tough, no big deal. But the food has dropped significantly. Time to find another local Chinese take-out. read more

The sesame noodles were great as well. The sauce was not overly sweet, and was enough to coat all the lo mein noodles evenly. It was topped with pineapple (strange, yes?), carrot, and scallions. The sesame chicken lunch special was good...crispy pieces of chicken thigh, broccoli, and a brown sesame sauce served with pork fried rice. This used to be my "go to" for Chinese Food. For a while now, I have noticed things getting smaller, like the container for the Egg Foo Young sauce, and the prices increasing. The proprietors never seem very happy and appear to be always in a bad mood and when you come to pick up the food, they seem to have a sense that "you should be happy they are allowing you to buy their food!" I also think, and I'm not sure, that they may be now using MSG in their food, mainly because of how I feel when I inadvertently ingest MSG. I'll take a break and look for another place. There's parking in the compound, and located close to a Dunkin Donuts for dessert. It's got a weird feel of old school and new, meaning the building, etc was recently built but the old school part is that you serve yourself from the tea pot/thermos on the side and from the water jug/dispenser. The food is alright, I'll need to try them out a little more to get a better feel. So far their hot and sour does have a kick to it. read more
