Bought a Groupon and was pretty nervous because I've never had a colonic so I didn't know what to expect. I hope you find this review helpful if you are considering one! PRE-COLONIC: -Do not eat 2 hours beforehand -Avoid gassy foods day before and day of like: cauliflower, cabbage, beans, broccoli, onions, cucumbers, raw apples, melons or unripe fruit -Apply abdominal castor oil pack for 1 hour 3 days in a row before (I didn't do this) COLONIC: -You will be lying down, undressed from waist down, and completely draped at all times. -Warm alkaline water (about 20 gallons) flows through a small sterile one use disposable tube that is inserted into your colon. -Occasional gentle massage aids in the release of accumulated waste and toxins. -She explains everything very thoroughly (super interesting to hear more about your body) and answers all of your questions. POST-COLONIC: -Right after you will want to go to the bathroom and empty all of your fluids and it takes awhile but after you're done you feel amazing...the only thing I can compare it to is when you wake up in the morning and brush your teeth and your mouth feels so fresh and clean, that's how my gut felt after! -Avoid gassy foods for 2 days -Avoid strenuous exercise -Eat laxative foods: salads, vegetables, fruit, juice, soup, fish, chicken, turkey -Drink several glasses of water with lemon juice CONCLUSION: I've read the other Yelp reviews and I can understand their concerns with the appearance but that's just aesthetics. This "doctor" was rude, unprofessional and acted as though she would rather be doing ANYTHING but be in her office yesterday . I was so shocked at her nastiness and snarky attitude that I almost walked out twice, but went ahead- thinking she "cant" be this way the entire time. But- I was wrong.. she got worse. To begin ... she was late and left me at the door outside ... for 10 minutes. We she arrived she didn't even introduce herself.. I thought she was a front desk person. But she was slamming around clipboards and no eye contact .. just over all rude. She attempted to charge me for a consultation ... but I told her there was NO place where a $50 fee was attached to this appointment. The paperwork does mention a consultation ... but there is no mention of money . I told her " of course I assumed you would consult with me before sticking a hose up my backside .." she agreed to continue without a fee.. but from that point on was like a used care salesman.. or timeshare.. Pushing products and upselling with every word. When I questioned her about anything ... from the amount of water being used, or what was in the fluid of the "green coffee mugs" she was adding ... she blew me off and said "its a basic colonic that you asked for" there was no explaination of the service... no step by step sharing of what would happen before or as it was happening. For someone who has never had it done... that would be the least she could do ... It went south from there. I told her I was full, and she added more... told me to tell when I had enough and was full and I told her I already had a few minutes prior and she continued to add more. As she told me to roll to my side, I told her fluid was escaping and I could feel it on the table and on my buttocks.( in fact i had to raise my body and l lift my shirt, so it wouldn't get wet . When she told me to get up and walk across the hall to the bathroom - fluid came out ( as expected.. right :?) and she got furious. Told me I did it on purpose. While I was in the bathroom - she was banging doors etc... When I exited the bathroom she told me that she has 2 mops .. I just looked at her.. and say "excuse me" Her reply ? yes, I have 2 mops, get one and help me clean up your mess" I told her absolutely not - I was not about to do that. Would you clean up blood if you bled on the floor of the lab during a blood test ?? she told me to go out the back door ... ( my car was in the front parking lot. As you can imagine... I will not be sending any referrals her way . I would never go back and wouldn't send my worst enemy to her. She obviously needs more customers or she wouldn't be advertising with Groupon, but with this attitude - and demeaner - its no wonder she isn't doing well . read more

Ok, it's that time of the year to get your colon cleanse and so I did. I've been going to this location for quite sometime now and the experience has always been great...............but my issue was the colon hydro therapist was able to identify what I had eaten early in the day and she didn't stop there, no sir buddy. She stated that I didn't chew my food long enough because I was passing large chunks of chicken through my intestine. We all have heard the story before, chew your food thoroughly before swallowing. It's not as if I'm wolfing down my food or anything. I just wasn't in the mood to hear what I wasn't doing right while laying down with an instrument up my rectum and I surely didn't want to hear "I see a little bit of shrimp, yada yada, yada". Then lastly but surely not the least, I brought the suggested items the doctor recommended to help digest my food a little better to see if I would see a difference during my quiet time in the ladies' room (I will speak on that next month), but I purchased a gallon of water with some type of solution that was mixed in the water. It wasn't a special coloring, just clear as crystal, but when I got home to try the gallon of water, it tasted like the spring water I already had in my fridge............so, with that being said I felt as though I was conned because I didn't taste any additional nutrients that was supposedly been added (hell to the NO....nothing was there). I even asked my hubby to take a sip and he said the same thing....honey you've been got. The experience is good, but I recommend anyone who may go to this particular location don't take any of the recommended nutrients, just stick to your plan --I'm only here to get my colon cleanse and I don't need any recommended solution for better cleansing, besides we have enough health food stores for that. I had a great experience here. I came in for a colonic (which I bought on Groupon). For those that purchase on Groupon, you can only go on certain days so be mindful of that. It says it on the voucher though so I was already aware. When I walked in and up the stairs it seemed welcoming. I wouldn't say cluttered, like other reviews but it definitely gives a homey vibe. I was greeted by a gentleman at the front desk and checked in. I filled out some papers and then proceeded to get undressed and ready for my colonic. I looooooved Dr. Washington! She was very comforting and gave me plenty of information on what I could change. She even offered me a drink to help with my digestion. She puts the thing in for you and then massages your stomach with castor oil to help with digestion. For anyone that said she was rude...I don't see it. But then again everybody has a bad day so I don't know. But she was nothing but nice and informational to me. Also, no, it does not look like a "professional" doctor's office but that doesn't mean that the establishment itself is dirty or unprofessional. Dr. Martina Washington is a breath of fresh air. I have been to her facility over half a dozen times now. I first went at the beginning of 2012 and now am hooked. Perhaps it is because I am irregular (TMI I am sure), but I make an appointment every time I need to get cleaned out. New Life Wellness Center is located in an area that is metro accessible and has parking for people who prefer to drive like me. I appreciate that the business is open as early as 5am because it enabled me to go first thing in the morning on my way to work from DC to Tyson's Corner. I always feel comfortable getting this seemingly uncomfortable procedure done and Dr. Washington always has my best interest in mind and is always giving me welcomed tips on how to live a healthy life. I recently had a colonics in Brooklyn, NY and it was the do-it-yourself kind which was so impersonal and truly uncomfortable. I will continue to go back to New Life Wellness Center not only for the great customer service but the results are also great. I feel better during and after getting the colonic. For the 3rd time in a year my appointment, scheduled on line, was given to a walk-in. What's the point in having a schedule? I reserved 9-10am. Got there at 9:04, didn't see an employee until 9:20. (I called en route to say I'd be late, but no one answered.) Further, as much as I have really enjoyed Ms. Washington's experience in the past, and the fact that she uses a "closed" system, she always blames the system "which I know nothing about" for these errors. Perhaps I'm uptight when it comes to my medical facility experiences--even holistic ones--but I was just not feeling it from the second I walked into New Life Wellness Center. The negative vibe started even before I arrived because the man who answered phones and booked appointments couldn't care less about enunciating his words, explaining procedures or preparation to new clients, or answering questions with anything more than a grunt or a string of mumbled words. I kept wanting to say, "Sorry, am I bothering you for calling you at your job?" The offered appointment times were inexplicably early--I kept being told that 7am was the only available appointment. Rolling up to this place when you're barely out of bed is also a bit of an eye opener. It is very dimly lit in a way that seems more condusive to a tarot card reading than spa atmosphere. I found the doctor--who is not a medical doctor but has a PhD in something related to holistic medicine, I think--to be saccharine sweet in a way that rings false and is therefore a bit unnerving. The follow up questions I made in regards to information she was providing were often met defensively, as though she was just hoping I'd accept her answers at face value. At the end of the day, she's still providing procedures that can have medical repercussions, so questions should be welcomed and encouraged. Again I will reiterate that this was obviously an outside the box experience for me so perhaps I had standards that did not align with what I should have been expecting, but I can't foresee myself visiting this place or recommending it to anyone. read more

You can get a Groupon for the first visit and after that you can get as many colonics as you want for the same price you paid Groupon for thirty days. This was my first colonic, and I decided to do it based on a LivingSocial deal. If you have a voucher, they will not book you on Saturday (the only weekend day they're open). So be warned--I wasn't aware of that when I purchased it. What other reviewers have said is essentially true. The place is very cluttered, so I was a bit concerned about the cleanliness of the procedure. While I waited about 25 minutes in the waiting room before being seen, there was a video playing on the television about the mistreatment of animals and why humans should be vegetarians. It was one of those videos with sickening images of abused animals, and seemed like a pretty negative thing to be showing! The treatment room itself was less cluttered (whew) and the gowns and sheets were all freshly laid out and clean. She showed me the tube she was going to use, and that it was new (still in the packaging). She was very sweet and talkative, and surprisingly disarming. The procedure was very comfortable, which I hadn't anticipated. She explained everything that was happening in a way that was very helpful. The place seems to be a one-woman show, and the hydrotherapist was answering the phone while conducting the procedure, and left for about 7 minutes while I was being treated (which caused me a bit of anxiety) so she could check on clients in another room down the hall. In the end, I felt like the treatment was a bit shorter than it should have been, because I wasn't fully cleaned out. Basically, a mom and pop pseudo spa experience. I was first greeted very rudely by the staff that was apparently inundated with people who wanted to use their vouchers before the expiration date. The spa changed their hours to accommodate customers who wanted to use it before the deadline; which was fine, but did not have the manpower nor the wherewithal to do so. Next, I was forced to leave the center to find a place to make a hard copy of my voucher (when every other business establishment has accepted my smartphone copy). After wasting time and money at a Fedex Copy Center, I came back to the center only to be pushed to the back of the proverbial line for other customers who made "appointments". Despite, talking at length to the front desk a day in advance about walking-in, I was made to wait for over 1.5 hr for my colonic cleanse. As a colonic virgin, I was a bit unnerved by the whole experience of getting my bowels flushed out. The staff certainly did not do their part in helping me relax prior to my treatment. I paid money for this service and they made me feel as though I was doing them a favor. I must say, after finally getting seen by "Dr." Martina Washington, I was pleasantly relieved with the experience. I really felt good and "light" after the colonic. The treatment itself was a bit unnerving, but the colonic hydrotherapist performed the service satisfactorily. I will definitely get a colonic and some point in the far future, but I will not return here. Sorry, no tip! Dr. Washington is a sweet woman with a heart of giving. My family and I have been utilizing the services offered at New Life for over 3 years, and have never had one issue. Just had my first colonic hydrotherapy session with Dr. Washington. She was absolutely wonderful. Very sweet and made the whole experience as pleasant as it could possibly be. I was impressed with all the follow up literature she provided me that was specific to my issues. Not once did she try to sell me anything else (not even more sessions of the cleanse) Her Dad (family business) who was running the front desk was very nice and friendly too! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I do feel they could clean up some of the clutter and make it a nicer environment. I have been to various clinics in the area and the service and experience at New life is unmatchable. For those who say that the place is cluttered, they are right. It does not give the feeling of cleanliness especially when you are getting colonics. The room with the ear waxing is on the disgusting side. The whole place needs to be cleaned out. While the lady is very nice, she has to know that a wellness place must be neat, comfortable and relaxing, The colors should be inviting and fresh., Also, I bought a groupon which states Monday to Friday, but when you make the appointment, they say only Tues, Wed and Thurs or you have to pay $129, I say that is false advertising and looking into a formal complaint about that - maybe the better business bureau. The facility reminds me of someone's apartment and that made it inviting but not the type of place i would have a colon cleanse. However Ms. Washington is amazing. STAY AWAY. I wish I would have read the Yelp reviews for the Washington, DC location prior to purchasing a Living Social deal. First there are two locations; one in VA Beach (which is where the testimonials are filmed) and one in DC. The positive reviews on Groupon/LS had to have been for the VA Beach location. This place is very very dirty and in no way a professional environment. It is above a restaurant on Barracks Row. I had a LS voucher that had expired for the treatment but I wanted to use the value I paid towards the colonic service. The "Dr" was explaining to the lady at the front desk how they had to call Groupon to make sure they get their money (while standing behind a curtain and I could hear everything). Then the "Dr" said she would call and told the young lady to do the Colonic. Honestly, I should have left then but I was so uncomfortable with my physical issues and had read that getting the colonic would help immensely. I got through it and the young lady was nice but I don't think she had much experience and when I asked her how long she had been doing this she hesitated and said " a while". You go to the bathroom IN THE HALL that also has no fan afterwards to continue to eliminate. The bathroom is filthily dirty I couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. Wow! I am totally surprised that the New Life Wellness Center was given anything other than 5 stars. I have been a client for so long, I can't remember my first visit, but I can say that it was long before my son was born and he's 5 year old...LOL! I have tried and liked all of the following services: Aqua Chi, Ear Candling, Colonics, and Reiki. I have also had several sessions with the Chiropractor. I have never had a bad experience and I like the fact the Dr. Washington provides detailed information and advice that pertains to your lifestyle and eating habits. I want to know if I'm not chewing my food properly, especially, since I live a very busy life. I am over 40, married with a 5-year, a full-time job and a non-profit business on the side...I need all the preventive health advice I can get, to prevent me from lying in a hospital bed with digestive problems or worst.
