For sure this isn't a great looking Chinese restaurant, but it's still a long time favorite in Rock Island. It looks a lot like a typical cheap strip mall Chinese restaurant, and that's what it is so no surprise about it really. New Oriental Express has pretty good lunch specials. A few are really cheap. The inside has pretty limited seating, so no surprise that most people get delivery or takeout. Came here after hearing about how it's a long time favorite. It was lunch time so we got something off the lunch special menu. There's a lack of tofu menu items, but they allowed there to be substitutions. It's about $12 at lunch. The General Tso's daily special was chicken, but we got it with tofu. Sticky and spicy General Tso's sauce was covering it. There was broccoli, and the tofu was pretty firm without being rubbery. Has some pretty good stuff at lunch. It also has pretty cheap prices. The menu has tofu on it for vegetarians. read more

Have been eating here literally since i was in the womb the family has always had great cooking and taken care of its guest well. I do miss dining in but what ever it takes to keep them in business is okay with me as long as i get to come back and share this amazing food with my kids while they grow up as well! So this use to be a place I went to as a child and always knew it to be good. However I just went there the other day and ordered a curry chicken and hot and sour soup with fried rice. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. The food was awful I honestly think I could have licked a salt block and got more flavor. The curry was bland, so bland that the only flavor I got was the occasional sweet onion. The rice look very minimal for fried rice and had no flavor at all as well. My hot and sour soup just taste like corn starch, it was absent of any flavor or any spice. This will sadly be my last time going there. Which doesn't really matter anyway as they only have 2 tables to sit at, as they still have half the building blocked off and it should be made clear they have changed their business model more towards carry out. The lady at the window was nice but near absent as it took awhile before she even came to the window. It should be noted as well I ordered my food with a water and now I received my food was on a tray like fast food, in styrofoam containers, plastic silverware, plus bottled water. I used to go to this place all the time, it was one of my favorites. Today is the first time I have been there in 3 years. Holy crap it is run down, the bathrooms are disgusting, the "new floor" looks like shit. The food was abysmal. The fighting and arguing come from the kitchen ......ummmm WOW!!!! I have eaten at Oriental Express for many years. Lots of nostalgia came from this restaurant as we would have it often with my dad who has passed. Since living in Rock Island the past 4 years, it made it really convenient to have such a great and reasonable Chinese meal. We ordered from there tonight and I will not be eating there again. EVERYTHING we normally order has changed. The Sweet and Sour chicken, General Tso chicken, chicken fried rice and even the crab rangoons. I have never had a problem with this establishment until today. I ordered an order of Crab Rangoons and took one bite and it was absolutely PUTRID. The cheese was almost liquid and separated and the crab meet was fishy and over all it tasted spoiled. read more

Ordered delivery - came in about 10-15 minutes! I was very happy, and shocked! The lady was very nice so I gave here about a 20% tip. Pros: Fast delivery ! Good food! Cheap-ish! Nice and friendly Cons: Jumbo chicken is...well not jumbo chicken wings. There's not much meat, but was still good. Not really worth $4 close to $5 for 4 pieces of that. Container wasn't sturdy. Some cheap stuff, so because of that the juice fell out of it and spilled in the bag. Fried rice...wasn't really what I expected. Was really about white rice. But that's fine--I just added a little soy sauce and it was good! Summary: Go out and try it. It WILL be different for everyone and I can assure it will at least taste good! DEFINTELY not a place where you sit and think "oh yea.. this kitchen is spotless. I'm sure everything is clean back there." But the food!? Pretty darn good. Sesame chicken here is exceptional. Horrible service. I ordered food for delivery and the delivery guy gave it to the wrong address. When I called after waiting an hour and spoke with the delivery guy he cursed me out. Told me I didn't know my own address and told me to go to h*ll. I demanded a refund and he refused. When he handed the phone to another worker she just said she'd give me a refund. There was no apology for his horrible behavior even though she must have heard him curse at me. I will never buy anything from them again and I suggest you don't either. read more

I used to love their take out. Their boxes leak horribly and are flimsy. Their packing of the food is something to be desired. We have lost part of orders due to mess at the bottom of the sack. When we called to complain they did not try to fix it or listen. Their spring rolls were my favorites. You can tell the are cutting MAJOR corners, not only with their product, but also with every other part of their business. Their food is edible. Their restaurant needs a major makeover. I love Chinese food but I would pass here. I ordered a lunch portion of fried rice and some rangoons. Pretty simple, and my go-to meal in a restaurant I don't know well. Here's my summary of my meal: The portion of the fried rice was HUGE, way more than I needed for a quick lunch. I thought it really tasted off.... I could only eat maybe a 1/2-1/4 of a cup before I had to put it down. It might have been because there were a ton of bell peppers in it and I really dislike them, but something else wasn't quite right and I still can't get the taste out of my mouth some half hour later. The rice I ordered was the vegetable fried rice and to the best of my knowledge it contained; egg, carrots, snow peas, onion (big honking pieces), broccoli, mushrooms, and baby corn. .... The rangoons were passable. Decent filling but once again something just didn't taste quite right, I think the wantons may have been stale when they fried them . OR it might have had to do with the burned to a black crisp and soggy eggroll that was in the bag (didn't order one... don't know why I got one especially one that bad looking). Didn't bother tasting it. payed 7-8ish dollars for my meal, thought that if the food had been good, that would be right on point for my meal compared to other restaurants. overall, I probably won't go back, and will stick with the Great Wall down the street. read more

Sometimes difficult to understand over the phone. But I haven't had any problems with their service or food.

I ate here in the past, years ago when I first lived here. This time coming in there was maybe 8 or 9 tables sat (me included) and only one server...still leaving 8-9 tables vacant to be sat. The server was nice enough but the timeliness was terrible. I ordered Sizzling Rice Soup and the lunch portion of Garlic Shrimp (the deep fried ones). Soup came out about 10 minutes later. Rice wasn't sizzling like the name dictates it should, instead it was just floating all separate from each other on the top. Flavor of the broth was good but the rice was fried in old oil, you could taste it. 26 minutes later (I know because I was texting a friend during this meal) my shrimp finally came out. Shrimp flavor profile was on point so definitely recommend that. $12ish for the soup, entrée, and an iced tea...but I wouldn't recommend this place: 1) During this event the employee's children were running around playing tag and fake fighting each other near all of the tables including mine until the ran to play in the kitchen. I didn't want a dinner show theater, just a dinner. 2) 26 minute wait for the entrée is ridiculous 3) Old oil used for frying 4) Buscart pushed through the dining room to bus tables...just a gross sight to me 5) Soy sauce bucket on the floor in the middle of the dining room. I thought this was originally to catch a water drip from the ceiling. Then I saw the busser throw a towel she just used to clean a table with in to that bucket. I then thought, ok yeah, this MUST be the dirty water bucket that is thrown out. Moments later, NOPE...she goes and pulls the towel out of the bucket of water, rings it out, and washes down other tables. Being in this line of business I am fully confident that this is a sanitizer solution in the bucket so I wasn't threatened by it, but just like #4, it's crazy gross! In conclusion, I wouldn't come back to eat in house. I could see doing a phone order for pickup so it's ready at a specific time that is mutually agreed upon so I wouldn't have to wait that long. read more

The food is actually pretty good but...I have been waiting 2 hours for my delivery. When I called for a status update I was informed that they had 3 more orders come in after mine and I needed to be patient. Oh, and they assured me that it was worth the wait. What has happened to good customer service? Telling a customer to be patient? Informing the customer that you are filling orders that came in after theirs. Only thing that does is make this customer feel angry. Even a phone call to report the backup would have been an improvement. Just another example of poor customer service these days. I have been going here off and on for at least nine years, at least once a month, if not more. It's a tiny restaurant in the middle of a strip-mall, but their food is SO good, I can't say what everything tastes like, but the chicken chunks are crispy and sweet, with HUGE chunks of veggies. and the sweet and sour sauce is to die for. I placed an Express-DineIn order to eat on my lunch break, after getting to the restaurant I waited 40 minutes for food I requested to be ready at a certain time (the point of the express dine in).
