One of the best Chinese restaurants I've ever had. I'm not from here, but have family that lives here! Once a year I have to make a stop to Shanghai. Their lunch plates are perfect. This place has been around since I was a kid. The lady that ran it forever was such a kick. Think her son owns it now. This place has the best egg rolls I've ever had. Crab Rangoon's are amazing also. Meals and soup. I'm not big on egg drop sorry so I don't get that. The Sizzling Rice soup is so good though. Best soup for colds. Big portions. Great textures. I've had a lot of the different dishes here. Big ones for us are staple stuff probly but it's best in town. Mongolian beef. Garlic/princess chicken. They've got a really good spice you ask for if like spicey. Been awile since I ordered it but there's a dish that's number #69 there. It's a mixed dish with everything in it. Pork/beef/seafood/mixed veg with this great sauce and they bring it out in this fryer with rice. Anyways I think it's one of top Chinese places around. The owner is a good guy. Try to pay cash. The amount of food lasts my family for a couple of days which is a good thing because it costs around $50 for 3 of us. But the quality and quantity of food is superb. The last time I was there, it was super busy. I've tried calling them in the past, not sure if I had the right number or not. So now I drive there, order my food and then go in to get it. This is a hard review to add, because this place can be very good. But they have a lot of weak spots, and I find them pretty inconsistent. During the height of the pandemic, I ordered the pot stickers. They said it would be 30 minutes to make them. Music to my ears, to me this means they are making them fresh, and they're probably going to be better than most other places in the QCA who make, at best, frozen premade potstickers. They arrived and were awesome! But they shoved them into a normal take out box, so they were all jammed together and the (homemade) wrappers stuck together. That was disappointing but the dumplings themselves were delicious. Now, post fire, I don't think they make them from scratch anymore, or at least not the wrappers. They're now pretty ordinary. Their Mongolian beef is excellent, a bit sweet, but the beef is nice and tender, and it's well proportioned with the onions. Good amount of sauce. Their chicken dishes, on the other hand, are tough and over fried. The chicken fried rice was more like fried chicken fried rice. It was okay but not great. They're doing too much here, and it would definitely be better with some stir fried (not breaded and deep fried) chicken pieces. This place is a favorite, and I do see why. I usually don't leave a review for resturants but with this one....We got there when it opened at 11:00. Tea was brought out and I tasted it. It was pretty dark, but it tasted like it was 'old', maybe moldy. I ordered chicken chow mein...you know, chicken with noodles and sauces...what I got was chicken, cabbage and onions over what might have been crab ragoon shells sliced in pieces and fried. The complimentary crab ragoon barely had any creamy insides..reviews kept saying how great they were. I was visiting this place because I am planning a party of about 10. This is notoriously the best Chinese restaurant in all of the quad cities. There have been numerous polls on the QC Food Facebook page and it is always heavily in favor of Shanghai. There isn't even a close second. The crab rangoons here are untouchable. Best ones I've ever had. I live in Milan and have ordered from Shanghai 3 times really hoping to have found a close and great Chinese restaurant. Sadly all 3 interactions have left little to be desired. I will give them their deserved compliments. Their fried rice is the best around. Their crab Rangoons are delicious. They are fast at getting your food out. Now for the issues I've had. Their service is lack luster. This is not because of covid because my first poor experience was back in 2018. I ordered food and went in to pick up I went to pay with an Amex card, to be rudely told they don't take Amex. Ok cool so I took out my debit card and paid. The lady rolled her eyes as she handed me the slip to sign like I was wasting her time for having taken out a card they don't accept. I got fried rice and beef lo mein. The beef was so chewy I was so bummed. I went a second time in 2019 thinking maybe it was just a poor experience because EVERYONE raves about the restaurant. Fried rice orange chicken and Crab Rangoons. This was good food but again customer service was lack luster so I decided I wouldn't be back. Welp yesterday their fried rice was just calling my name. So I called in and asked for sesame chicken with pork fried rice. The guy said something like comes as fried rice pork is extra I said ok no problem. I went to pick up the food and my total was 19.82. I barely heard the lady and thought she said 9.82 so I handed my card over. When I saw the little slip say 19.82 I was baffled. I literally ordered a combo plate of fried rice and chicken and it was 20 bucks?!?!? So I get home and see they gave me a pint of both chicken and rice. Rice was amazing as always. Sadly, the chicken was not that great. Maybe they should get someone who speaks English fluently to take orders. And then maybe they can provide the customer service as well. I will never be back. Amazing service first and foremost! During lunchtime, they really know how to speed up the process to get you in and out in an orderly manner, without feeling rushed. Dinner time is much slower paced and has a nice atmosphere. You will also never see a water glass less than half full. The service is SO above and beyond! Food is amazing. I've always been a fan of their generals chicken and their Mongolian beef. They're generals chicken is very unique to their restaurant. It doesn't taste like any other place's generals chicken and it's amazing. Their Mongolian beef is hands down the best thing on the menu, and the best Mongolian beef I've ever had. None of their stuff tastes like it's a carbon copy of every other Chinese restaurant in town. It's very unique and a nice change of the monotonous. Also, their crab Rangoons have ruined them for me from every other Chinese restaurant because nothing will ever compare to theirs. They are worth the trip alone. As for the atmosphere, it hasn't really changed much since it opened back in the '90s. It's not a bad thing, just something to keep in mind. The food and the service are worth it alone to give this place 5 stars. A nice remodel or new interior paint job and fixture change would really make this place stand out as the Quad City landmark it deserves to be. read more

Best crab rangoons ever. I also really love the egg drop soup- you can tell it is made from scratch and has flavors from the different vegetables in it. Not greasy or neon yellow, just a really delicious, hearty soup. I always make sure I get these two items, regardless of what else I order. My favorite dish for 25 years has been the mongolian beef. Simply amazing. I've had many chicken dishes too, and honestly have never had a bad meal. I no longer live in Illinois, but when I return, I try to plan a stop here, even if it's just crab rangoons to go. Worth it every time. In these COVID times, they built a little plexiglass window and allowed one person at a time to pick up their meal. It felt safe and they were taking it seriously. This is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. Their eggs rolls have a thin and crispy shell, which I love compared to some other places that have a tougher and thicker outer layer. I love their Princess Chicken, which is my go-to dish. It's spicy, with a mix of peppers, peanuts, water cress, and chicken (obviously). Their food is always reliable and consistent. I've yet to get a bad meal, and I've ordered several things from the menu. And now to the important part. I often define how good a Chinese restaurant by how good their crab rangoons are. Shanghai Chinese has the best crab rangoons that I have eaten to date. The outer shell isn't too hard, and isn't shaped with all kinds of pointy ends that poke you in the mouth when you take a bite. Best of all, they completely nail the filling. They put a ton of it in each rangoon, and the flavor is perfect - a nice blend of cream cheese and crab flavors. Both dine in and carry-out are great options. Once you phone in a carry-out order, it is ready within 10 minutes (sometimes less!) and they've been known to throw in an extra egg roll on occasion. For dining in, the restaurant is what you might expect from a standard Chinese restaurant. Very quiet atmosphere, and you're surrounded by colors of red and gold along with traditional Chinese art on the walls. Everything is clean and neat, if not a bit dated. I recommend this place to anyone who is looking for good, traditional Chinese food. They aren't doing anything ground-breaking at Shanghai, but it's where I always go when I'm in the mood for good Chinese. read more

Shanghai is a great restaurant, with some outstanding food. The price is right, and the taste is incredible every time. Lunch specials are generous, without overdoing it. The only weak points aren't big ones. The crab rangoons are decent, not as great as everything else, as are the egg rolls. Shanghai makes the best crab rangoon ever created. I've tried to find a place that can come close and I haven't been able to get close. These delicious, perfectly fried pillows of cream cheese are filled with such yummy goodness I call them angel pillows because I'm in heaven while eating them! The mixture inside is not overly fishy but a perfect blend of imitation crab (whitefish), cream cheese, green onion, and sugar. I'm pretty sure it's the sugar that sets these apart from their competition. It's not too sweet but a perfect balance of sweet and savory.
