First let me say New York Butcher Shoppe, you are wrong that every time I come to stock up, the smoker is going strong with that sweet, savory, smoky aroma of low and slow cooking and every time I ask do you have anything on the pit for a walk-in customer (not even a sample), you tell me it is already pre-ordered by customers. Dang, weekend lake enthusiast, but I digress; you can get a good selection of choice meats to your liking. Try the ribeye, it is a regular cut, but it looks like a Cowboy Steak to me... If you are pressed for time or want to wine and dine, they have pre-made meals which I tried the Jerk Penne Pasta. First I have to send a giant thank you to one of our Yelp community members (Ron F.) for telling me for months that I needed to make it out to the monthly wine pairing hosted here. I finally took his advice and I have no regrets from the evening. For anyone local, it can be found in the middle section of the Surrey Center, all the way at the far left end, across from Finch & Fifth. So parking and shops to check out are a plenty. The wine pairing event is after hours (7 pm) so you have the place to yourself and it is only $20 a person (as a guest). Now let me go ahead and mention that if you become a monthly member ($40) it includes this wine pairing event as well as a selected bottle of white and a bottle of red wine. Plus 10% off wine purchases. That pays for itself. Back to this event. You walk in and a Greeter is being served. Pace yourself here. There will be two small plates, a main entree, and a dessert served. All of these will be paired with a different wine. And don't worry about your glass going empty. Their pours are heavy and the team is walking around with the bottle, making sure no glass goes dry. Separately, the dishes and wines were amazing. The pasta, meat, and baking skills were top notch. Everything was plated beautifully as well. The wines each had their own personality and made me mad at myself for not being a member. But the two of them together, pure joy to the palette. A bold Cab with a dense chocolate cake, that is a capstone pairing if I've ever seen one. I will point out that this is a deli by day. That means there are meats, side dishes, tomato pies, of course bottles of wine, and much more available for purchase. That also means there is very little seating. So plan to stand for the entire event (about two hours in all). But due to the nature of the group there and the curiosity to see everything there, you probably won't even care about standing (especially around that third or fourth wine pairing). I can only comment on their freshly made sandwiches, but I've come here twice for the same thing! A friend who is local to the area recommended this place when he heard I would be driving nearby. He said they were the best, freshest sandwiches in town, and I don't think I can disagree. The sandwich menu sits and the checkout counter. When I walked in, I was not immediately clear on how to order a sandwich as they also sell wine, meats, and some pre-packaged fresh food in coolers. I asked staff and they were very nice in pointing me to the proper location to order the sandwich. There is a list of signature sandwich options or you can make your own. I like my sandwiches kinda simple, so I made my own. I just got turkey, oregano, pepper jack, and tomato on white bread. All sandwiches are the same price - $10.79 with tax - so it is definitely an expensive sandwich for what I order. Still, I've now ordered the same sandwich twice, so I must find it worth the cost :) It takes about 15 minutes to get the sandwich, which I found somewhat surprising because it wasn't that busy the first time I went in there and it's not that complicated of a sandwich. Again, I went back again after my first time so it's obviously not enough to keep me away. It just seemed odd to me, that's all. Not the greatest system to order, especially if someone is already at the counter and you're waiting. They really should find some way to make it more obvious and more efficient to get the order in, but at least everyone who works there is incredibly nice in getting you what you need. read more

What a great find in Augusta. I went here specifically for the subs and I was not disappointed. Now they are not cheap, $9, but you get your money's worth. This place is not comparable to that underground railroad store that slaps subs together like an assembly line. This place has sandwich artists. This good of a sub is hard to find in the south. They have a wine tasting every third Thursday of each month. For a small fe, you get 4 wines to try and 4 small plate courses. It's a great time to meet the staff and make new friends. If you plan on attending, please call ahead so they can get an estimated headcount. Not required, but helps them ensure there's enough tasty dishes for all. read more

Wonderful, friendly staff! They were very helpful when I called about getting some beef bones, and put some aside for me to pick up the next day. They seem to have a decent selection of meat offerings that are hard to find elsewhere in the area. It's a bit expensive, but that's to be expected. Wow -- this place has gone downhill! I stopped in last week after not having been there in a while and was shocked at what I found! The wine shelves were practically empty, food that was past it's "best by" date was being sold at half price in the pre-made food case. The portion size on the sandwich had gone way down as well. I don't know what happened, but I was thoroughly disappointed. The only reason I'm still giving it two stars is they still do have a nice selection of steaks. After talking with the owner (Jack) he was more than happy to make a substitution - of a higher quality at the same price - for what I needed it for without me having to come back the next day. This place is great. If you're looking for meats that are a cut above (ha...see what I did there?), look no further. They have a good selection of beef, pork, and other vegan-friendly treats, as well as occasionally stocking special items (like the Duroc pork I got yesterday). They are also able to order special items (venison, etc), though some foresight and a healthy wallet may be necessary. They even carry prepped foods, though I admittedly have never tried any of them. We'd had our eye on this shop for awhile, but it was a victim of 'out of sight, out of mind' due to its location on Surrey Center. I was reminded of it when someone was raving about their chicken salad last week. I stopped in to pick up a quick dinner for my husband and I. They have a short menu as well as a build to order option, we tried both. First of all, their meats and cheeses are among the finest we've ever eaten. There are only two small ways that the sandwiches could be improved. We are northern transplants, and were largely raised on hard rolls. I get that this is a regional preference, but I hear often from fellow transplants that you can't get a decent sandwich roll down here. Our favorite deli in our last town solved this by offering both hard and soft rolls. Second, they used leafy greens as lettuce. I'm looking for crunch from my lettuce, and the kind they use wilts the second it hits the meat. In spite of these two things, it was the best sandwich I've had in the four months I've lived here. read more

I like to see what my choices are when purchasing instead of just calling in an order to be picked up later, which this business would prefer you to do. I went in to get a prime rib for my family Christmas dinner and they were "to busy to cut that right now". So I placed an order to be picked up 24 Dec. on 24 December when I went in to get it they did not have it. I was told "you should have made a reservation for that earlier we don't have any now." It took them awhile to actually find my order paperwork. Turns out they had sold my rib the day before. While I was stressing about what I was going to do for Christmas dinner now, they finally came up with a smaller one.
