Honestly, after hearing good things about here, I have to say that the tales woven about the great food here simply did not live up to the reality. Yes, the sandwiches are big and with the amount of meat piled on it, $9.99 was a fair price, but the sandwich was barely heated, so much so that the cheese has not even begun to melt. I had ordered the Verrazano, which is corned beef, pastrami, and cheese, so this is something that you would prefer hot, or at least I would. I was also not a fan of the ordering system where you walk up to a tablet and punch in your order. It was like being in a convenience store. The butcher shop part of the store also looks very high and pricing. It was almost nine dollars a pound for preformed hamburger patties. I don't see myself returning here. Went by since the seafood shop in the shopping center was closed. Purchased a prime ribeye and a couple of their house made bratwursts. The bratwursts were just OK (at a premium price) but the "prime" ribeye was anything but prime. Purchase and grill prime cuts from other local grocers/butchers and they're always worth the extra $. This was more pricey and just awful. Maybe I caught them on a bad day but won't take the gamble of spending $40 on one of their "prime" cuts again any time soon. read more

I ordered the Manhattan and asked for it to be hot. I saw the guy making it stick the meat and cheese in the microwave to prepare my " hot " sandwich. I assumed my hot sandwich with cheese on it would be toasted under a broiler. I told him I didn't want it very hot so he would take it out of the microwave. It was supposed to have a proprietary blend of pepper on the sandwich. It was literally a wad of Boar's Head roast beef with white cheese on it between a nondescript bun. I tried to redeem the situation by broiling it when I got home, but I was just grossed out by the whole situation and lack of nuance. Went this weekend to order something we had never had. We were treated with disdain, with very little help being offered. We called several times, trying to get more information and still were left feeling like we were stupid and beneath helping. We went to another butcher and were treated amazingly. All our questions were answered, tips and tricks were thrown in that we didn't even know to ask. AND the exact same product was $10 per lb less. Wow....simply wow! This place knows how to make a sandwich! They have about 8 house favorites to choose from or build your own. They have order forms at the counter and you simply add on all the extras you want. I Love when places do this. Fresh Boar's Head meat piled high...no need to worry about doubling the meat! Plenty of cheese...plenty of other options (lettuce, black olives, banana peppers, tomato's, onions, bell pepper, etc). The hardest thing you will have to do is try to fold this in half if you get the hoagie roll. Great flavor and huge sandwich! $8.99 gets the sandwich and a bag of chips. Try their brand of sweet teat....some of the best I've had in the area. So glad I found this place and tried it out. Additionally, they can fill your wine/beer needs with a plentiful selection that features local brewery selections. They also have their own branded spices and cooking seasonings as well as several take and bake options. Anxious to try some of the other things they have to offer. The New York Butcher Shop was a random lunch stop for us on President's Day, after we needed a much-needed break from wedding planning. We wanted to go somewhere new that we had never been before. Jasper ordered the Brooklyn sandwich and I ordered a veggie sandwich. I could have used more fresh vegetables on mine, since it was mostly cheese. Jasper felt his sandwich had too much meat (some too salty) and not enough other flavors or ingredients to actually be appetizing. The open face of the sandwich made it difficult to actually fold the sandwich, and to eat it in general. I did like that the 8.99 price includes chips. They have beer options to go with the sandwiches, and a grocery portion with unique items (e.g.Wine Ice Cream--I purchased two pints of the Raspberry Chardonnay) and even prepared foods (e.g. Eggplant Parmesan!). All in all, I might go back for a sandwich when I'm in this area again if I can't find other options. However, I give 3 stars because I wasn't blown away, especially not such that I would drive out of my way just to come here again. Food is pretty good, but I've had two bad experiences with the staff especially a really big guy who looks like he could have played O-line in high school. Today's sarcasm/smart mouth experience went like this. I ordered, went outside, ate and then brought my trash back in to throw away. I asked, "hey do you have a garbage can?" He just have me this annoyed look and said "uhhhhhhhhh, we have several actually." I just kept waiting for him to take the bag I was reaching out toward him, and then he says, "what, were the one outside full?" as if I was really being annoying. A lot of it was tone of voice and facial expressions. Look, I can get rude behavior for free. I don't need to pay for it. We run into this place a few times a month. It's the best source we've found in Birmingham for beautifully hand cut steaks. I've never had steaks that are quite so tasty (yep! go for the Prime cut - you know you want to and when you do, you won't be disappointed!). They have a tremendous selection of fresh butcher meats - I saw some good looking veal chops yesterday while I was in (definitely not things that I see in the meat case at my local Publix!) - as well as a fine selection of wines, cheese & crackers, veggies and pretty darned good looking sides in their fridge section, like pastas, mashed potatoes, & casseroles, etc. The perfect fixins for a great steak dinner! The fresh meatloaf has its own following as does the chicken pot pie! And, as with all good butcher shops, they make a mean sandwich of only the finest meats (Boar's Head!). You could share one of their sandwiches with a friend (call me if you don't have anyone to share your roast beef sandwich with - I'll have it with spicy mustard, please, and can you pick me up a cold drink while you're there?)! I'd say the previous reviewers are a bit over zealous. We can start with the name of the establishment, there is NOTHING New York about this place. Now that is not a bad thing, but having lived in NY for 20+ years and visited many butchers, this does not hold a candle to them. There are lots of varieties of meat, any that are not beef, pork or lamb are sitting frozen in a case and don't qualify as fresh. Most of the meat in the fresh case (not frozen) is all cyrovac-ed (in vacuum bags) which I am sure increases shelf life but does not say "fresh" to me. There is an entire wall of wine, the only fresh vegetables I saw were potatoes, all other vegetables were in the freezer. There were two types of sausage, italian hot and italian sweet. About a dozen retail cheeses (in plastic packs) A pound of Fresh chicken salad was $10.00 Sandwiches were $7.99 and were large and filled with meat, all made with Boars head meats (that's NY!) and was a great value! It was not the Oasis I was hoping for and 90% of what I could get here is available at Publix. read more

Boy is this little shop a treat! I'm a bit sad that we didn't discover this while we actually lived a little bit closer to this area. Ah well, we'll still return! The sandwiches are HUGE (as a sign on the front door indicates). It's no joke either. The Mrs and I split a sandwich (wasn't starving) and had a brew a piece. We sat outside because the weather was nice. What a great lunch date! The meat on the sandwiches is very very moist and tasty! That's a compliment if anybody from New York Butcher Shoppe reads this. The service was great, friendly, genuine and personal! Great customer service can do wonders for a visit anywhere! We didn't take advantage of any fresh meats for purchase, but wouldn't be opposed to it at all if they are as fresh as the deli meats. There's no reason for this place to have any less than 5 stars. I have always had a great experience with my purchases here. Butchers are extremely nice and knowledgeable. Feels like they are actually there to HELP you more than just sell you meat. I am a Big Green Egghead and this is the only place I'll buy meat for smoking. They've provided me with excellent Boston butts, briskets, steaks, sausage, ribs, and T-bones. Not to mention, their ground beef is the best I've ever had. I've cooked burgers for people and they come to ask me where I got the meat. It's delicious. The prices are a bit higher than what you'd pay at the grocery store - but the quality is worth it. You get what you pay for. Twice this has happened where they sell me "prime" $40/ lb filet. They have strings around meat holding it together that looked more like beef tip. I posted a picture and hope you can see it. Not your typical round filet but a long piece from the butt end of the meat. I took it back and they argued with me and tried to educate me on tenderloin and said they would get it in a restaurant like this. Finally they replaced it but I don't trust them because they offer "choice filet" and the "prime" is hidden behind the counter and they say they cut to order. Not that I would truly notice the difference. The steak they replaced mine with was not that tender though. I have been a long time customer and won't be going back. I didn't want to write this review but now that it's happened twice and the owner was confrontational I feel you need to be aware. read more
