I got a Groupon for $20 worth of food at this New York Gyro eatery. There are two locations in Minneapolis. This one was closer to my hotel. I like getting a Groupon because it allows me to discover a new business. I drove over to this eatery after I was done working remotely from my hotel room and running a few errands. I parked across the street and walked over. It's not the fanciest place, but it works. There were a couple of tables occupied by a few folks eating. I lined up to place my order and looked at the menu to figure out what I wanted. I got a man who was behind the counter. I indicated that I had a Groupon. He nodded and asked what I wanted. I got the following meals: - Kofta kebab - Chicken tikka I got both on rice, with cucumbers, tomatoes, and corn as my side. The man said that it would take ten minutes to make the kofta kebabs. I was good with the wait. I got another woman at the checkout. I went over my allotted $20 by almost $5. It was fine. I paid with a credit card. I tapped. It worked, but the machine froze. There was a chair available. I sat down while I waited for my food. I people-watched. This eatery is connected to a building with a money exchange business across from where I was sitting. My order did take ten minutes. The man let his female colleague know that I had two orders. She nodded and packed everything for me in a plastic bag. I thanked her and happily left with my food. I then drove back to my hotel room to chow down. I had the kofta kebab for dinner immediately. I had the chicken tikka the following day for dinner. The kofta kebab was excellent. The kebabs were flavourful and so good. The rice was generous. I loved the veggies with white sauce on everything. It was comforting. I'd order this meal again. I had a microwave in my room. I heated up the chicken tikka the next day. It was good, but the kofta kebab was better. The chicken tikka had a lot of white pepper. It was disappointing. The chicken was tender. The rice with veggies were still yummy. I'm glad that I got takeout from this place. I'd definitely return for the kofta kebab. I should try a gyro next time and see if it's equally as yummy. I asked for so many vegetables (onion, pickles, tomatoes, salsa, and something else) and sauces. rice and 5 pieces of falafel is worth $20 here its not worth it at all and they dont listen to your toppings preferences i guess, cool. Did not care for this place at all- Ordered the family platter- it was a huge platter of rice and only a little bit of meat. What should had been chicken, ended up being fish; weird! I'm surprised this place has negative reviews. I've never had a bad experience in shop or door dashing from this location. It's not really a sit down restaurant, but there are a few tables people utilize. I appreciate the fact that the line is in front and they let you customize your plates similar to Chipotle. The value of what you receive compared to the cost is second to none, and the taste is always on point. You know what you're getting. The only reason I'm not giving it a 5 is because their Falafels always seem overcooked, or as if the grease could be rotated a bit more often. I think this is a place that you go in knowing what type of food you're looking for. If you do that you won't be disappointed. read more

Don't eat here!, I got very sick after eating here but at first I didn't think much of it until some of my friends told me that they went through the same thing after eating there, one of my friends got so sick after eating at this restaurant that he lost quite a bit of weight over a span of a week due to sicknes, and I to have been dealing with non stop diarrhea for the past week, there giving people food poisoning stay away from this place, and this is coming from someone who loved New York gyro once. read more

Solid (not spectacular) quick order gyro spot on Lake Street. They offer "Chipotle style" made to order gyros with a crazy variety of toppings such as corn, every pepper imaginable, and cucumbers. The small, counter service spot offers around 4 tables or so if you want to sit down and eat real quick. At $10.49 for a regular gyro, they aren't the world's biggest, cheapest or the best in the Twin Cities. However, there are often times when you can find BOGO deals online, making things a bit more acceptable. Staff is crazy friendly and will certainly accommodate to any requests that you may have. read more

This is my favorite gyro spot in the twin cities. This place may not be fancy but it's a gem and I'm glad to have found them. The lamb gyro meat is actually not dry here, it has tons of flavor and it's juicy. You also get to pick what goes on your gyro, which is one of my favorite parts of this! The portion is BIG, you get a lot for your buck here. This is where my boyfriend first tried a gyro and he became obsessed! This place is also open late, so that's a huge bonus. Parking isn't the easiest as it only counts with three paid parking spots right in front of the location but it's lake street so it's never really easy... but it's worth it ;) I've had their chicken and rice box in the past and it was also full of flavor, huge portion and a-m-a-z-i-n-g! I recommend you give it a try and don't shy away by appearances! read more

This place has never once gotten my order right no matter what I order but it's sorta cheap, open super late, delivers and is much more proper food than Taco Bell so I do continue to order it. It's still like a desert oasis after you're intoxicated. It will not blow you away but that's just not the purpose this place serves, it will fill your stomach with a well balanced meal, it may or may not be the food you ordered but it will be food every time. read more

This restaurant may be good at some things, but not at gyros. And I mean c'mon "Gyro" is in the name of the restaurant! MEH:  Mostly displeased with my experience overall.   The gyros were cut weird and generally inauthentic.   I know it's difficult to get real lamb gyros in the twin cities, but c'mon guys.   If you can't cut gyros properly from the spit, you may want to call it something else.    My fries were machine cut in a factory and not at all interesting, reminiscent of cafeteria fries. GOOD:   The baklava was excellent.   There are other items on the menu that offer a hint of this establishment's true specialties (hint: NOT gyros), and I may come back to try other items cited by reviewers.   But for now I'd suggest this restaurant change its name to more accurately reflect what they are good at. read more

A man from cooking area very old and tall came towards me and started making face on us. It is harrassing. The other old man on who take order purposely ignored us and did not take order for fifteen minutes .It was a Sunday lunch they took 1 hr to cook the food. The old man who took order brought one halwa puri and said try this for now. I bought 100 dollars stuff but he gave me one only to try after one hr late. This was my first time visiting NYG and I must say I really liked my sambosa. So... i ate them too fast before snapping a pic, unfortunatley, but i will go back to provide more details of the visit. I didn't actually go in, my bf, actually went in to make the purchase since there was no available parking spots.. we were illegally parked in the furniture store's parking lot (since they were closed on Sunday), so i had to stay in the car. Ambiance: Unsure, I didn't get to go in, but from the outside, it looked like a typical store front restaurant where you order at the counter and not a sit down restaurant. Service: Unsure... didn't get to go in.. see above. Food: Delish! We were referred to an East African restaurant on Pillsbury from The African Safari restaurant, but neither had been there before to rate or trust the food, so we went to NYG, since he had eaten there before. You get three sambosa's with your order with a side of some sort of green condiment (reminded me of salsa verde sauce). Since i didn't go in, i'm unsure of the filling: i ate so fast, so it loooooked like chicken, peas, carrot; fried hard and crispy on the outside and tasted great. We have cravings for a gyro salad nearly every week, so figured to try this place since it was close to his work in Uptown and looked like a relatively quick and cheap place for lunch during his break. It's a small, food counter with several tables and chairs. The place looked like it could use some major updating, but at least was clean. With photos of the items on the menu, you order at the counter. The worker was just Serious McSeriousson and looked like he could use a lollipop or beer to lighten up. We each ordered a meat salad for $7.99. I had the chicken and gyro combo and my husband had just the gyro. What's different about this place is you can choose whatever salad accompaniments you'd like from the bar in front of you. They had olives, pickled peppers and veggies, cucumbers, different sauces. My container was stuffed because I wanted all the things! When it came to the actual quality of the food- it was lackluster. The chicken and gyro weren't freshly cooked and were taken out of a food warmer with tongs. The spices were meh and because the salad stuff had been sitting out all day, it wasn't as fresh as I'd hope either (esp for $7.99). We'll likely look elsewhere when our gyro salad cravings hit. read more

Still amazing. Ordered the chicken rice at 2PM today, it's almost 9 and I'm still full. To the people whining that the gyros aren't that great: grow up lmao. The food is great, the service is prompt, and the chicken especially is SO good. I love this place. The fried food is still fried to perfection, also. Yes, it clearly came from a bag. Who cares? This is not a fine dining recommendation, but it is a recommendation for a particular itch. About a decade ago, I lived in New York and was obsessed with the chicken and rice from Halal carts. Every once in a while I get a craving, but without going back to New York, there's only so much you can replicate in a home kitchen. This place is the closest that I've found. I'm new to the neighborhood, so I stroll into the first neighborhood joint I see, which is this kebab house that reminds me of the ones In Europe. Huge menu behind the counter, three tables, and a few coolers. So far I had the fish burger (dropped fresh) and chicken rice (#1 on the menu for good reason). The attitude behind the counter is what makes it the New York which is fine by me but not for everyone. read more

My friend lives in the area and recommends it to me and another friend while visiting at her house. Ermagerd, so delicious. While it seems to have a bit of an identity crisis (why is it named New York Gyro and also serve burgers, etc), the food we had was AMAZING and a great value. I can only speak to what I had - the number 1 (chicken and rice dish with a build your own salad with yummy toppings) and can't wait until I can go back again.
