We came for brunch on Sunday. Our server explained to smalls plates concept so we ordered several items to share. The Oscar pizza is a real stand out the crust is amazing the garlic is perfection. The egg on the eggs benedict, is cooked perfectly. The pork belly with the eggs benedict is smokey, rich and delicious. The Smores French Toast is an out of this world treat. The apples on the buttermilk waffle are naturally sweet and delicious. The $2 mimosas top it all off and make everything well worth the price. We arrived for a Valentine's Day cooking event which turned out to be absolutely amazing. From the time we sat down, we both knew we were in for a culinary treat. We've looked at the NYWCC before for various different events, including a wedding location. While it didn't fit the bill for a wedding venue for us, we knew that the location had a lot more to offer. So when the opportunity arose to attend one of these classes, we definitely had to jump at the opportunity. The New York Wine & Culinary Center provides classes, tastings, and other various events for those who are interested. This particular one featured an extensive meal with lobster, steak or chicken options along with their respective wine pairings. The set up included watching the chef make the fabulous meal (never a bad seat in the house) and the wine sommelier providing the necessary expertise to pair some of the most amazing finger lakes region exclusive wines. The class was amazing and the food was down right delicious. If this class is indicative of all the classes that the NYWCC provides, I expect I'll be back sooner rather than later. read more

We took a cooking class tonight, centered on Southern food. We made fried chicken and were able to sample some jambalaya, shrimp poboys and shrimp and grits made by the other participants. There were about 20 other people in the class, most of which were around retirement age. The room itself was very nice and had lots of space and many stations. I think my hesitations come from the class size and relative lack of guidance compared with the price. Each spot was $65 per person. I know you can't expect someone to be holding your hand the entire way, but a miscommunication resulted in very burnt fried chicken. We wanted to try a different way to fry the chicken that the chef mentioned as a more reasonable way we might try to make fried chicken at home. It wouldn't have been a problem if we were just cooking for ourselves, but I felt a little embarrassed offering burnt food for other people to eat. All in all, it was a nice night, trying something new. We have taken a cooking class at Wegmans before and enjoyed it more. It isn't something we do super regularly, but I don't think the Wine and Culinary center would be our first choice. read more

I didn't realize the name of this establishment changed from the Culinary Center to NY Kitchen and I don't actually know why, but New York Kitchen is doing all the right things! My husband and I wanted to eat outside and decided to drive out from Fairport. I had heard the restaurant was so-so and wasn't expecting much, but I was SO pleasantly surprised. The upper deck is filled with tables and has a nice view of the lake and main st, and the service was excellent. The cocktail menu was awesome and made it so hard to choose, but we both loved what we chose. The bread they brought out was innnnnsane. For dinner we ordered a sirloin steak special and a pizza and they were both perfect. Overall it was just the perfect blend of ambience, good service and delicious eats. Yay! read more

Food is very good. We are traveling and I called to ask if there were gluten free menu items. I'm told yes. Off the thruway we go to eat lunch! My complaint is I have celiac and the menu notes several items with "GF". I preferred the wings out of the offerings. Not Buffalo wings. Yeah! I'm told they aren't really gf. Well - dang!! The food was very good, my only comment on the charcuterie board could use a little more bread but everything was delicious. The service on the other hand was the worst I have experienced in a very long time. The waitress only came over to take our order and to bring our food. I had finished my drink and when we got our food asked for another. Not only didn't I get my drink my husband saw the waitress sitting at a table talking with people!! Outside of a lovely garden and a great view of the lake, my disappointment in the food was beyond awful. I paid $20 for the "Large Plate" Grilled Salmon dinner. What I got was an approximate 6-oz. piece of dry overcooked salmon that had a dry rub on it which tasted like it had cinnamon in it. It came on top of about 1/4 cup of very wilted tasteless greens. Then a side of grilled dry Tuscan bread. No veggies or anything else. Thank goodness I asked for a couple of lemon wedges which made it somewhat palatable. A great spot for a cocktail in Canandaigua, possibly the only spot in Canandaigua that's currently open that's not a dive bar if you want a nice glass of wine or cocktail without having a high school reunion as well. Great NYS wine collection, the sparkling rose and Chateau Frank- brut is always a good option. Decent food, the salads are great portions (you could split between two people) and a good fish fry. Hadn't been to the NY Kitchen since it changed from the culinary institute, so we went there a couple weeks ago. When we arrived a few minutes early, we went to the bar for a drink. The bartender had quite the puss and an attitude to match. Her sidekick (the other bartender) must have been on the same menstrual cycle because they were like bitch and bitchier. Our waitress (tattoo girl, I wish I could remember her name) more than made up for it however. She was everything you'd want in a server and more. She was bright, intelligent, funny, attentive and beautiful. Our dinners were great too. I had the duck (my favorite) Loren had the Salmon. If we hadn't stopped at the bar, we'd have given it 5 stars. read more

Definitely recommend this place. My parents stayed at the Lake House Hotel and this is a 30 second walk from the lobby. You can make a reservation for their restaurant or sign up for a fun cooking class. If you're just drinking they have a tap room and a nice wine selection also. My parents took the cooking class and loved it. The staff was so kind and really went out of their way to make sure everyone had a great experience. Definitely make a stop here!! read more

my boyfriend and I went out to celebrate the 4th of July! We made reservations ahead and was given a outside table for 2 at the side of the restaurant without any view. I asked if we could move and the hostess said no it was to busy. We decided to move inside. we got a cheese board the crostini's were so hard you could have broken a tooth on them. We asked for bread so we could enjoy the brie, they brought us 2 piece of cold sandwich bread. As not look like complainer, we did not say anything. We ordered chicken French! It came lukewarm and did not taste like lemon at all! It was so upsetting because our meal was not cheap! My boyfriend got wine and the pour was very stingy! This place is fairly divisive In reviews. I actually take a rather middle of the road approach. This review is just for the restaurant as I have not taken classes or done events. My wife and I have been here a handful of times, lunch, brunch, and dinner. The service is like many reviewers have said. Considering that friendly and efficient service is not really the New York MO I would say the service here is above average always friendly and accommodating if terribly slow. One gets the impression that, behind closed doors the servers are involved in an intense round of scrabble, or giving a lecture on high philosophical subjects. When in reality its likely just chatting (I used to work in food service). The food has never truly disappointed, but it's also never truly blown me away. When going out to dinner one always hopes for friendly service and if there is long waits for food some explanation or at least acknowledgement that is capped off by something memorable. In the end they get 4 stars a memorable meal or stellar service away from the 5th star. May be back, but I'd need to gander at the menu for something mouth-watering to pull me back. Otherwise I will be at Green Front or Eric's Office for the 30th time. read more

Solid 3.5 for sure! Came here for the Xmas eve brunch yesterday. My mother in law had a gift certificate for here and hadn't had an opportunity to use it. This was the perfect occasion. The dining room was very nice overlooking the lake. The menu was apparently new and had a lot of great sounding options. In the end two of us went for lunch type options and two of us went for breakfast options. Ordered: the turkey club, the black and blue burger, the poutine, the beet salad and the omelette. Everything was delicious and everything came with generous portions! We also got the apple fritter with the spiked whiskey sauce which came before the meal and had all of us drooling with a bite or two. The brunch libations were standard with mimosas and bloody Mary's which were both standard imo. I sampled my poutine and the hubby's burger and the MILs beet salad. The beet salad was ok, Iv had better but it was nice that they had the beets in two styles in the salad. The burger was a tad over done, the hubby ordered it medium. And my poutine could have used waaay more curds cuz to me that what defines poutine! But I have to say the plate that looked the most enviable was my father in laws omelette! It came with bacon and potatoes and covered in meat sauce (which the server told us was nick Tahoe's original recipe). After we finished eating we were roaming around downstairs and had the opportunity to do a little tasting in the wine/liquor shop. The lady in there was super friendly and helpful, and gave her us like 6 shots between the 4 of us by the end of things. Ultimately we bought two bottles because they were insanely delicious! I recently had lunch at NY Kitchen w/ a family member who was visiting. We walked in at about 2 pm on a Wednesday. No one was at the door, but a couple minutes later, a woman walked over and said that there were no tables available. We just looked @ her, because there was no one at all in the dining room- all empty tables! She said "you can sit @the bar, if you want." We did, (no one else at the bar, either) and told the young man behind it that we wanted food. He gave us menus, and walked away. About 10 minutes later, he finally came back to take our order. I ordered the charcuterie plate, as I'm allergic to onions. The menu said nothing about there being salad on it, but it arrived w/ one- and dressing w/ onion all over it and much of the meat and cheese. The bartender immediately disappeared into a back room again and didn't come back for 10 minutes. I told him then that I couldn't eat much of it- and why. He read the menu and announced "no, it doesn't say anything about salad," (duh) and then called the kitchen to ask if there was onion in it-but never said anything to us, and disappeared yet again! When he came back out, I asked if there was onion in the dressing- he said "yes" but no offer to do anything about it. I told him I wanted a new plate, so once again, he disappeared. Now out from the back room comes the woman who told us to sit at the bar- obviously livid, shaking, and barely able to keep a lid on her anger. Her upper lip was literally twitching like something out of a cartoon. She said, "What's the problem?" I told her what the problem was, and she said (angrily)," So you want a new plate?" as if she was about to break it over my head if I said yes, which I did anyway. I did finally, after 1/2 an hour, get my new plate of food...my cousin was now done w/ her meal. Giving a two star rating just because of the view from upstairs. The food was mediocre , we had a party of 6. Several of us had the beef on weck, others salad. We ordered drinks and had to remind our waitress after 15 minutes said the bar would bring them out, the sandwiches came without the horseradish, had to wait on that for a period of time and again a reminder and the kitchen was supposed to bring that out. Coffee that was ordered never came but was on the bill. Needless to say a 20% tip was automatically put on our bill which she certainly didn't deserve since she didn't serve us., not even the food was brought out by her! Was very excited to try this out, incredibly disappointing. We called at 11am to make a reservation and had no answer, we called back at 1pm once they opened and talked to someone who could not make us a reservation since the manager was not in, she said she would call us back about updates with our reservation when the manager arrived. We never received a call back. Despite the poor service over the phone, we were still eager to try NYK cafe for dinner, so we showed up without a reservation to get a table. We were seated right away which was great. However, we waited forever for food, and when we received the food it was cold and beyond horrible quality for a culinary institute. Our $15 burger was the same size as a McDonald's value menu cheeseburger (shown in photo), our fries were served cold, and our waitress was too busy kissing her boyfriend in the corner to notice we were served the wrong appetizers! When we noticed we received the wrong appetizers, we let our sever know right away. After she picked up the appetizer that had been sitting on our table for over 20 minutes, she served the same exact dish from our table to the table next to us! we had always enjoyed the whole experience at NYKitchen. Not yesterday. We met friends under the tent for an early dinner. First off the menu looks like a bar menu. Very little to entice us. We used to enjoy the gourmet meals and wine pairings. All gone. The wine list is pitiful. 6 wines by the glass and only one from upstate. We were not allowed to run a tab, you order from the bar tender and pay up after each order. My husbands martini was served in a wine glass. We were given balsa wood forks, knives and spoons. My fork broke trying to cut a pizza slice. Can you imagine eating a steak with a wooden fork? I was passing through by the front desk and asked the three young women hanging out there if they could fix the sound system in the tent. They told me I would have to talk to the people working outside. A bit hard to find anyone working outside. The bartender attempted to fix the sound system and couldn't. We asked her to turn it off three separate times as it was scratchy. This facility has bottomed out. read more

While visiting the area of the weekend we tried Upstairs Bistro (inside of The New York Wine & Culinary Center) for Sunday morning brunch. We were so very impressed with the location, the view of the lake and rolling hills (even inside at the window on a rainy day) and above all the service and taste of the food. The partnership between Wegmans, RIT and Constellation Sands makes this place a truly local non-profit partnership that focuses on local food and drink that displays both the pride and quality of the products in the region. The menu was diverse yet not overwhelming and all very reasonably priced, especially for the quality and atmosphere of the restaurant. I sampled the Jalepeño Chicken and Waffles and it's hard to imagine how to find anything better than this dish. The waffle was cooked perfectly and had the perfect blend of savory flavor offered by the jalepenño without being spicy or overbearing. The local maple syrup infused into the center of the sandwich was heavenly and not too heavy or sweet. The chicken was tender, well portioned, and lightly breaded to perfection. The accompanying side salad, lightly dressed and fresh, balanced the rest of the meal perfectly. Our server recommended the best things on the menu, including the unique morning cocktails featuring local liquors, wine, and beers. The overall experience was exceptional and we would highly recommend this restaurant and we cannot wait to return! read more

I'll keep this as short as possible. There were four of us for brunch- we waited an hour for our food which was cold when it arrived. Chicken and waffles was awful, overdone on the meat and waffle was not even close to warm. Spicy Steak Hash was not spicy in the least, was overdone and bland. The NYK breakfast plate was well received by my Father-in-law and looked great. And my Wife enjoyed the Eggs and Benny which also looked very good. The staff was not very welcoming. Our server in particular seemed distracted and did not update us on the status of order except for about 30 minutes into our wait to say that "it will be out soon". And even then there was no apology offered. However she was right there actually hovering by the table while my Father-in-law was still counting up his cash for the bill. Nitpick Alert - The cream for our coffee was served in a ramekin for some reason. Ever try to pour cream into your coffee from one of theses things? Of course not. Why would you? Somehow I just don't trust a restaurant that has 20 pound wooden chairs with leather basket-weave seats and backs that cannot equip their customers with a proper vessel with which to dispense my coffee accompaniments. So it was a nice drive down from Rochester and the facility is beautiful. Unfortunately that is not enough to warrant a return trip. read more

They had some classes going on and we opted for going to Upstairs Bistro. We ordered beers (large selection). John had the Bacon Mac and cheese that was superb and I ordered the Crabcakes that were incredible! The relish/chowchow that came with them was one of the best I ever had! Served with warm bread it was a great meal for 50$ for both with beers! We went to the tasting room after and had some cider and talked to the staff that were very friendly! As soon as sat down was told that another seating would be at 1:30. As in, hurry up and eat! Shrimp cocktail was almost room temp, Waldorf salad had sat out more than hour and root veggies were way undercooked. It was a very blah buffet. Not (!) worth $95! Fresh made omelet was only thing hot and tasty. Here's to that sous chef. Spoke to Operations Manager and she heard us out. Offered us a cocktail.....which we accepted. Service was very poor. More interested in getting tables set up for next group. We left before 1:00. Will NEVER go back! Can get better meal at any local diner! Feel ripped off. read more

This place is really exciting, and very active. We were there on a Saturday night, and there was a full dining room, both indoors and on the deck overlooking the lake, a wedding party, and a cooking class. The tasting room was also open. The chef prepares dishes which are locally sourced, and everything features produce and product of the Finger Lakes. There are 20 New York craft beers on tap, and a very large and well selected wine list of wines by the glass. I wish I could have tried everything. I selected the smoked trout salad, followed by a delicious fresh vegetable and quinoa wrap, accompanied by lattice cut homemade potato chips. Others had perfectly seared salmon, but most impressive was the double cut pork chop, with an interesting sauce and a fabulous presentation. I am told that this is a not-for-profit Center, which makes for a really interesting concept. The focus is everything from New York, including wines from Long Island, and a very impressive representation of what we produce right here in the finger Lakes. The service was wonderful, and everybody was welcoming and accommodating. The views over Canandaigua lake are spectacular, and after dinner we walked along the pier which extends a little bit into the lake. What an enjoyable evening. read more

Great cooking classes!! I went here with my boyfriend for a Mac and cheese class. When we arrived, our names were labeled already at a station, and all the ingredients were already measured and out for us. The staff walked us through the prep and cooking while providing helpful hints and recommendations. While our food was cooking in the oven, they even gave us a simple demonstration of how to sharpen knives and cut up onions and peppers which was EXTREMELY helpful and a nice additional bonus. Afterwards we were able to eat our food, ask questions and take home the leftovers. It's a great place for a date or catch up with friends while learning useful cooking tips. read more

It was a lovely day to sit outside and there is plenty of seating there. My boyfriend had the pork chop and said it was good, which is saying a lot since he is usually disappointed with the way the meat is cooked at even the best restaurants. I had a vegetarian special of eggplant lasagna (no wheat noodles) and falafel. The falafel had a wonderful texture and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. Unfortunately the cocktails were not good. Not the right balance of acidity and sweetness, horrible crushed ice, no flavor. Definitely not made by a bartender that cares about their drinks. I switched to wine, which was local and very nice. I wouldn't waste time on the cocktails here. Although our server was quite personable, he forgot our appetizer, and the wine list, and the neighboring table's salad dressing. OK I'm heavy hearted that I'm writing this. I had wanted to come here for so long, and I finally did. Well....it all began with the hostess (cue clown or ominous music, wait save the ominous music for the blood sports aka mussels, go with clown). I arrive promptly for my reservation and the hostess podium is empty. Stand, for a few moments and then turn to look towards the bar. Low and behold there is someone who would resemble a hostess clearly looking at me, who promptly turns around and walks in the other direction. Ok, wait a few moments more and a waiter sees me, comes over, and says "have you been helped", I reply "not yet, I've been waiting". He turns his head towards the bar where BAM she has reappeared, on the phone, he says "I'm sure the hostess will be with you in a minute" and she looks in our direction and promptly turns around and walks away, "I guess not" (looking apologetic and confused) he says and also walks away. WAITING...and the manager comes over and asks if I've been helped, yada yada proceeds to seat me. The rest of the crew hadn't arrived yet, I was unceremoniously given a glass of water "while I wait for the rest of the table", I had to halt the waiter and ask to actually order a drink (this would be common, pretty much we had to get someones attention the majority of the evening). The menu had stated "house made lemonade" YUM, I thought, and ordered a mixed drink with lemonade in the ingredients. I was brought a very pink country time lemonade looking beverage, disgusting! I didn't see my waiter for a while to inquire or give it back, so I drank it. When asked if it was indeed a mix, he confirmed, kind of surprised that I would care. So, now my sister in-law shows up, walks right in and up to the table unaccompanied, (we hail down a waiter) order a bottle of wine, and a cheese board with pickle and marmalade. Good healthy serving of cheese, (the blue was great, the pickle weirdly only vinegary, from the color of it they tried sweet but it tasted dill except for the onions and carrots). We had to ask for more bread, which was odd because the meat board (which we also ordered later) had an abundance of bread. Hartman's supplies the meat, and Pittsford Dairy the dairy, I'm a fan of both and supporting the locals, but I would have been impressed if the place had made some of their own products. At this time my brother shows up, being chased by the hostess (where in the world did she come from) who says "oh are you planning on eating" all flustered. The three of us look at her like REALLY, DID SOMEONE JUST TELL YOU, YOU HAD A JOB TO DO? I mean my brother is a dashing man, but she didn't have to run up on us. (Hail a waiter) We order mussels, delicious broth, but no spoons with which to eat it, don't worry we asked for them. There were beard parts included, for free and a handful of mussels that didn't open. I kind of liken this to, thanks for the hoof with my steak, if I can't eat it.....don't put it on my plate. I proceed to slice my finger open on one, and start bleeding. I wave someone down and ask for a band-aid, which eventually the manager brings. Now, every other table has gotten bread and butter, we have gotten none so far (I think we have been there at least 90 minutes, oh plus the two years I waited to be seated). Flag the waiter down and order Pan Seared Montauk Scallops, bacon risotto, garnished with organic micro greens dressed with citrus vinaigrette. At this time he asks if we are done with the meat board and see's my brother dipping a piece of bread in the mussel broth, hence the offer to bring some bread. Bread comes, warm (nice), sweet butter (nice), why did we have to wait? The scallops come, they were cooked alright but the bacon fat had not been rendered off at all, it was raw in color and texture. The risotto texture was good, vinaigrette had a lot of acid to it. I inquire if the desserts are house made and the waiter pushes the cheesecake (no thanks I can make that at home). So, although not stellar in service or food so far we order dessert, the seasonal creme brulee, I think it was peach (hey we had it at The Rabbit Room the day before and it was delicious). Wait a little bit and are told that they are out of it. Ok how about the pound cake? In stock! But a huge disappointment, it was so hard, dry and crumbly that your utensil clinked on the plate when you finally broke through it and them crumbs went everywhere. Mind you, this was a Sunday evening, with the exception of one 10 top, there were maybe 6 other tables with customers at any given time. Hardly a hustle and bustle. What a bummer, I had been interested in a cooking class (I have memories of reading great menus with squid ink and seasonal specialties, but I think I've lost the taste for it). It seemed that it is an establishment that would cater to the seasonal Canandaigua lake visitor or renter, intrigued by the name and embellishments but not looking for a steady local following. read more

The first time I visited the NYWCC was two months after it opened. My how it has matured! It's a treasure. Being from California, it's nice to have somewhere to get the NY experience. The tasting room is a wonderful way to get acquainted with NY state wines. I have to thank the tasting room employees for turning my husband and I on to one of the best wineries in the Finger Lakes - Ravines Cellars. I love all of their wines. This month I finally had a chance to take a cooking class (rhubarb). It was a really great experience to do with my mother-in-law and sister-in-law. It was a hands on class so I felt a little bit like I was on "Iron Chef America" but it was really fun. You get to eat some of the treats at the end and take some with you. I am happy to say that they use all local ingredients. We have eaten at the Taste of NY lounge 3 times. The first time we went they didn't have a full menu. The second time we went for lunch and it was fantastic. I have to say that the gourmet grilled cheese and tomato ginger bisque were the best I've had and the memory of it has stayed with me to this day. The third time I went was for dinner just this month. The food again was fantastic. My only complaint is that the beer list seems to be taking over the wine list. While I completely support showcasing the NY state craft beers, this is the NYWCC which has the word "wine" in it. I think that the wine list should be just as long as the beer list which doesn't seem to be the case. Plus, I don't think that craft beers affect the senses (the aroma, the mouthfeel, etc.) as wine does. I REALLY hope the NYWCC retains its wine status. It's so nice to have something like this in Canandaigua and it's soooooo unpretentious (unlike some CA places I won't mention). This review is just re: the Upstairs Bistro which is the restaurant "upstairs" at the NYWCC. Came here after purchasing a groupon. My date liked it way better than I did. We went early on a saturday evening and it was kind of empty at first but definitely picked up by the time we left so reservations may be a good idea. The bar area seemed especially buzzing with happy hour folks. The staff here all seem pretty knowledgeable and our waiter was awesome. The bread we got was perfect; warm crunchy crustiness on the outside and soft inside. The pork and apple agnotelli are like ravoli served in a sweet cream based sauce and they were delicious. When there's only one of some food item left that we are sharing I'm always generous and say "oh you have it" but the last agnotello had to be cut in half, sorry! For an entree I went with the NY strip which was $32. It was served on a bed of locally grown (per the menu) mixed veggies and potatoes, along with blue cheese gratin and onions. My first issue was the overall temperature of the dish, just a bit too cool. I usually think of NY strip as being not as lean as a filet but not as fatty as a porterhouse/rib eye. This steak was way too fatty and interspersed with some of the toughest gristle Ive ever tasted. Slicing though it, I could hear the gristle being sawed through and I spent much of the evening picking it out of my teeth. The veggies were decently cooked but a bit salty. Also my steak was closer to medium rare than the medium I asked for. My date got the pork chop and enjoyed it but I thought it was too salty. For dessert we shared what was called a "tart" but looked like a slice of cheesecake and tasted like it had been defrosted (ie still partially frozen) The wine we got was stellar, which was reassuring given that this is the wine and culinary center. Dinner for the two of us with the app, two glasses of wine and dessert ran us a little over $90. Not extravagant, but Ive had much better meals for less. Definitely would not have come here w/o a groupon. Perhaps this place would be better for lunch or happy hour drinks, with small appetizers, or sandwiches etc but can't recommend it for their dinner entrees. read more

REVIEW OF CLASSES ONLY: The price of the classes here cannot beat. Hands down. The quality of teaching and most especially the quality of the equipment is top notch. Hello, Viking... The farmer's market early Saturday AM class is not to be missed. We met at the local farmer's market... planned a menu in groups of four, picked fresh ingredients then went back to the top chef... i mean, NY wine and culinary kitchen. Where we picked our proteins... ground our own meat... made our own soup, roasted veggies, and ended up with a full 3-course meal. We don't even know how they can afford to give these classes so cheap considering the quality of ingredients. Thank you, Ny strip steak. It was an amazing experience. And FUN. read more

Great vistas of the lake, but the menu for Sunday brunch cannot accommodate a Vegan palette except for a lame salad of mostly greens and a couple slivers of veggies. They don't even have a non-dairy creamer option for coffee (like soy or almond milk - so easy to keep on hand). Pretty sad in this day and age. When I asked for jam for my non-vegan English muffin (I was desperate), I was told the chef will not allow the restaurant to serve any jam during brunch. WHAT?... read more

Unfortunately had a terrible experience here. Waited an hour for a couple orders of eggs, hash browns and a BLT. When the food finally came it was ice cold, the BLT came with a ton of mayo, after asking for no mayo when ordering. The waitress apologized but the food was inedible. read more

The New York Wine & Culinary Center on 8/19/15 while visiting the Finger Lake region on New York. The restaurant was advertised in a map we picked up and it seemed that Yelpers overall had a good experience. My pasta dish was excellent and I liked the fact that the New York Wine & Culinary Center picks only local ingridents to prepare their dishes. The ambiance of this restaurant is nice and we had no trouble getting a table on a Wednesday night. I travelled about 30 minutes to get the New York Wine & Culinary Center. Although they market themselves as part of the Finger Lakes their really not located anywhere near the lakes. They located in what appears to be the suburbs of the Finger Lakes. It appears they also cater towards people who want to host events or take a cooking class. (The facility below where the Bistro is located appears to be a nice event space. It reminded me a lot of the Culinary Institute of America located in Hyde Park, NY.) In a nutshell, I am glad we went but due to the fact it is located not near the Finger Lakes and is a little higher than what I am use to spending while vacationing I don't think I'll be coming back. read more

I feel like I need to write two reviews - one for the classes and events and one for the upstairs bistro. Clarification, I would give the culinary center 5 stars for their classes. The chefs know what they're doing, the menus are relevant and delicious, the atmosphere is fun and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I wish I could stop there. However, I've now had two experiences with the upstairs bistro, both negative. The food is so underwhelming and such small portions for the price. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect or want cheesecake factory size portions but if I'm paying over $20 for scallops, I want more than an appetizer size plate. Tasteless "local beef" cheeseburger with dry pork belly. The service at the bistro is completely different than the classes downstairs. Four hostesses that can't be bothered by your presence and I don't even know what to say about the waiter. I definitely recommend the classes. I can't recommend the restaurant. read more

This place is great, its right near the water and has so much to offer. This is an ACTUAL prestigious culinary school. There is a restaurant which is gorgeous and very tasty. The wine store offers local ny bottles and you can also taste before purchasing. The meals are all organic and the only wine served is from local vineyards. The store is great, I bought four wooden cooking spoons which were half the price of the ones at W&S. They offer cooking classes and each room/kitchen is well equiped to put most places to shame. I would give this five stars (for the food) for Canandaigua...although if you moved this restaurant to DC or NYC, I would probably only give it four stars. My wife and I went there this past weekend and stayed in the Canandaigua area. We called early in the afternoon to request reservations only to be told the first available table for two would be at 8pm. We chose to go early and sit at the bar if we needed to. Upon getting there at 5pm when they opened, we tried again to get a table and the server said they were "full", but the manager came over and "squezzed" us in. The amuse was very good (split pea soup w/ creme fraiche) although I felt the consistency could have been a little smoother. We also had a salmon tart with dill. The tart trumped the soup and was seasoned with the dill perfectly. I ordered the roasted pork and a flight of red wines. The red wines were very good but not very memorable (both literally and figuratively). They should have some cards that describe what you are drinking, so you know what you have. When the server brought them over, I drank one, and forgot what the other ones that I ordered. When the roasted pork arrived, it was served as two cuts from a shoulder. I think the portion was generous and teetering on almost too much. Overall the pork had very good flavor and was cooked till it almost fell off the bone. Was it mind-blowing? No, but it was defintely a great dinner. The veg. that went with it was good as well, but, did not support the main star of the show enough....they were very ordinary. For desert I had the creme brulee that was infused with lavender and honey? This was a huge standout and I can still taste the decadence of this desert. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant, especially for Canandaigua. It is the best that this small town has to offer and hopefully other restaurants will take a cue from it's cuisine and amp up their menus a little. The food was very good, but the service is mediocre (mainly college kids). I would also recommend better music (80's music is not fitting for this place). And when we left, the restaurant was only 1/2 full...not sure why they could not have squeezed us in over the phone. read more
