Been a customer since '96. Back for a game weekend and reliving good memories, but it was short lived. I had an unpleasant encounter with one of the employees here, an older man with close-cut hair. When I went to pick up my food, he questioned whether I had ordered two slices. I told him I only had one in my hand, and my roommate clarified that the second slice was mine. Despite this, the employee refused to hand me my slice unless I admitted to ordering two. Auto D-bag alert and it got worse. When I asked him not to make things difficult and just give me my food, he escalated the situation by telling me to "step into the kitchen if I wanted a fight." He also made a racist remark, asking me, "Why can't I speak English clearly?" The cashier at the register, who was also Asian, immediately apologized for his words--which makes me think this behavior is not unusual for him. Based on how openly he acted, I suspect he might even be the owner. Either way, this kind of treatment is unacceptable and makes me feel this establishment needs to hide this dude in a dark closet or off the floor completely read more

Horrible customer service. I politely asked whether my pizza was ready because several people who ordered after me had already received their food, and I could see that my pizza had been made. $2 pizza slice Tuesdays at NYPD might just be the best deal in town! The deal runs all day until 10pm and it's valid on all slices except for the deep dish. They usually have a pretty big selection to choose from but going through the line can be stressful as often times they'll be rotating through options so quickly that they might have a whole different variety when you get to the front. The line stays pretty consistent throughout the day but I've come to find that the best time is either right when they open or during late afternoon. They have a good amount of seating both inside and out. The people working are always really nice with a funny, almost NYC style attitude. It really feels like a taste (no pun intended) of home. The pizza isn't the absolute best I've ever had and Joe's is undoubtedly better in the area, but it checks a box and again, $2 slices simply cannot be beat especially considering Joe's is like $4 for a simple cheese. My favorite slices are the barbecue chicken and the pesto chicken, but again they have a ton of options. Will absolutely be back! read more

They started to add on additional hidden fees when paying with a credit card. I was charged $7.26 for three slices of pizza for their $2 Tuesday deal. That's a 21% upcharge. It appears they've also covered the "No Tip" option on their card reader, so you have to hit "Custom Tip" and manually enter $0. Not worth going anymore, just on principle. Edited to add response from owner: "the 21% fee is tax credit card fee box that you asked 0.50 c if you pay cash for 3 slice is $ 6.18 even $ 7.26 is a good deal for 3 slices, so you will get from us: 0 star as a costumer". Working at the hospital night shift, NYPD stays open and delivers late which is nice for us night shifters! Usually get pizza or a calzone when we order. Food is average. But the cheese bread and ranch are really good!! My big complaint is that they always put multiple calzones into one box, which makes it hard to store when you order out with multiple coworkers. New York Pizza Depot was one of the only places open late after an evening of enjoying some local watering holes, so I tried to order through their website while in town over the summer. It was not working at all, so I ended up ordering through Uber Eats to have it delivered to our hotel. The delivery time came and went so I called the restaurant and was told it would be there shortly. Nate and I hung out in the lobby so I was able to grab it from the delivery person as soon as they arrived. We ordered a 12" supreme pizza, with pepperoni, sausage, onions, mushrooms, peppers, and ham. It was not the most visually appealing pizza and seemed like it was missing a lot of sauce - plus the sausage was sliced smoked sausage, which was a little weird, and most of the peppers and onions were basically raw. Fortunately we were pretty hungry and the pizza was decent for late night, after the bar food. I don't think I'd try ordering again late on a Friday night, but I might stop in for a slice at lunch. read more

New York Pizza Depot was my preferred pizza-by-the-slice joint while I was an out-of-city student at UMich, and it continues to be one of my favorite spots to swing by as a townie walking around downtown. The variety (Chicago-style, Detroit-style, mac and cheese, BBQ chicken, etc) has always been fun and the pizza staples (pepperoni, veggie, etc) are very good. The late-night hours are also a plus. Do you know how you can tell if a New York style slice shop is truly great? Order the cheese slice and don't put anything on it. No shaky cheese, no garlic powder, no dried herbs, no pepper flakes. Just taste the basics. On their own. Unembellished. In doing so, there is no place for imperfections to hide. Bland crust? Flavorless cheese? Meek sauce? They will stand out like a sore thumb. Typically, I wouldn't advise doing this in Ann Arbor. We're far enough away from New York, that it's unreasonable to expect a close facsimile of the style. Pizza here is typically thicker, cheesier, and embellished with more toppings. But since I've never been to NYPD before, I wanted to see how it stacked up to the new shop in town that just opened its first location outside NYC. As expected, the cheese slice was uninspiring. The flavors in the dough were underdeveloped, and the dough itself was undercooked, producing a gum line between the bottom crust and the layer of sauce. There was too much sauce and too much cheese. Plus parts of the bottom crust were woefully undercooked, despite going in the oven for a reheat. On the up side, NYPD does have a grandma pie, which looks tastier. Since it has the sauce on top, it shouldn't suffer from the gumminess problem. And the sauce has a little bit more love put into it. Plus this pizzeria has beer on tap. So I'm looking forward to return for a grandma slice with a pint, and hoping to produce a tastier outcome. Also, kudos for the integrity of reheating all the slices to crisp up their bottoms. Despite its flaws, the cheese slice did have a crisp undercarriage. It's also worth noting that most people seem to come to NYPD for their more topping heavy slices, which are surely tastier than the one I tried. But I was playing strict rules New York style pizza slice evaluations. Rules are rules. Still, I'm cautiously optimistic that on a return trip, NYPD will earn that fourth star. read more

Also service can occasionally be staggeringly rude - like when I tried to help the cashier ring up Tommy York and was rewarded by the owner taking out whatever was bothering him that day on me. They're open late which is great - though it can mean putting up with a bunch of drunk students who just left Scorekeepers after the bar closes at 2AM. For picking up a couple of slices during the day it's great. Lots of delicious options. And the service is usually great. NYPD is an average pizza spot. They offer unique pizza creations and flavors which stand out. This is one of the few real late night food spots in Ann Arbor which makes it convenient. I thought the chicken bacon ranch pizza was okay but not my favorite and definitely not traditional New York Style but the crust was tasty and well seasoned. I also thought the Alfredo pasta was pretty good but the garlic knots were not my favorite. I do not recommend the cinnamon knots. Eating the cinnamon knots was a challenge in itself and felt as if my friends and I were partaking in the cinnamon challenge as there was so much cinnamon on the knots and it was just a vessel for eating a spoonful of cinnamon. read more
