My mom and I visited the New York Theatre Workshop a week or so ago for "Lights Out: Nat 'King' Cole" - a play about the final broadcast of Nat 'King' Cole's television show in 1957, written by Colman Domingo and Patricia McGregor and starring Dulé Hill. The production was good - the acting was wonderful, and we had a good time. Being Off-Broadway and in the East Village, the location is great - tons of great options for dinner before the show! The theater is on the smaller side, but it's intimate and I don't think there could be a bad seat. Rather than sending the tickets via email in the hours before the show (as is custom with Broadway theaters), they kept the tickets at Will Call for pickup right before the show. It was easy and quick. If the worst thing I can say about a theater experience is that the bathrooms are not great (I think there were two stalls, so the line was pretty long and there's nowhere for the line to go except right in front of the doors in to the theater), that's a pretty great theater experience. I'd happily return for another production at New York Theatre Workshop. I'm signed up for their newsletter so I can return for something exciting! read more

Another intimate-sized theatre with brick exposing walls on either side. I sat in the center of row A so I was at times 5 feet away from the actors. The back rows are not steep and looks like you can't get a bad seat in the house. Good leg room and comfy seats. Two bathrooms that are gender-specific "general admission" for seated toilets and "standing" for urinals. They also sell $15 tees from XS to XL in blue, light and dark grey. Got two. One for my niece who loves acting and one for myself. Very comfy. The theatre's location is situated in a charming area of E 4th St. Closest station is 2nd Ave (F line). Close to Washington Sq Park for those visiting the city. Also some lovely restaurants here and in Soho, which is a few blocks away. I will definitely be back for future performances for all the above reasons. Of course, the play I watched was well scripted with a unique set design layout and great acting. The playwright was also in the play and she blurred the boundaries of audience and stage in a few ways: acknowledging the audience and the play as well as using the seats as part of the stage. The Endlings by Celine Song reminded me of Suicide Forest by Haruna Lee as both playwrights are the heroine in their respective plays and both deal in their own unique way of how they grew up in the United States as immigrants from the Far East struggling for their identify in a society of "whites." read more

The range of offerings has something for everybody whether you're into drama, comedy, or musicals and the pricing is also very reasonable considering there's no such thing as a bad seat in the house and there are various discounts to accommodate all price points. The NYTW boasts a personable staff, a cosy foyer that fills to bursting right before the doors to the theatre open, and a tidy ladies' room, fortunately. This space, reconfigured for Anais Mitchell's Hadestown run, is a theater-in-the-round holding approximately 200 patrons on mismatched wooden chairs (seat cushions under the chair for one's comfort). A small concession stand is set-up at the entryway to the theater proper for a little libation during intermission. This is truly the spot to view intimate performances. For our show, we were in Row A and I felt almost as if I were a part of the piece. It was both thrilling and, given the rigors of the particular play I saw, a bit stressful, if I'm honest. This venue is a gem & I'd be keen on seeing other works at NYTW. read more

Great setting to watch Andy Bragen's profound new play, "Notes on My Mother's Decline" in the relatively new Next Door space. Intimate, with seating on both sides of the set, facing each other. Steep enough angles for everyone to get a good view. Screening of outside sound so effective, it was possibly *too* effective: Seemingly every minor inadvertent audience sound was audible throughout. Nice space upstairs for reception. Ample bathrooms on multiple levels. The lighting was at eye level and a little glaring. Pleased to read in the program that a lighting upgrade is coming. Worth knowing the seating policy for your show. The tight space makes seating after the start difficult. Our friend just missed curtain and wasn't allowed in at all. read more

I had the chance to see the spectacular Mary Jane with the amazing Carrie Coon and had never been to this theater before so it was exciting to check out a New York City venue I had never been to before. While I don't normally go watch shows despite living in New York City, having been to New York Theatre Workshop was a great experience. Aside from the play itself, the size of the venue is exactly my kind of size. You get a sense of intimacy wherever you're seated in the theater which has two stages. While some stages make it feel like you'd need binoculars to watch the action, NYTW is venue where you won't miss anything. Happy watching and remember: Don't deny, satisfy! read more

I have no idea why the other raves of this place haven't given it 5 stars, but I'm happy to go out on a limb here. As others have said, the NYTW isn't the place to go for some mind-numbing, sequins-flashing, feel-good family theater (not that there's anything wrong with The Little Mermaid, actually there is, but that's for another review...). It's tough, thought provoking, risk taking theater and the birthplace of some amazing artists like Jonathan Larson as well as a place for old pros like Caryl Churchill and Sam Shepard to test out new works. I've seen some amazing things here - not everything I've liked, but everything has gotten me talking and thinking, and isn't that what theater should be about? In an age and country where the pinnacle of American Theater is overrun by bloated, soulless Disney Musicals, I'm glad to live in a town where places like NYTW can take risks and succeed as well as sometimes fail. After reading a pseudo-review for "The Heart is Lonely Hunter" in the NYTimes, I decided I HAD to see the show. I love the book. I was extremely excited to read about the $20 Sunday performance tickets. You need to go to the box office in person (open Tues-Sat 1PM-6PM, and select Sundays when there are performances) and pay in cash, and I think you can only buy four at a time. But they let you choose your seats. And since the seats are raised, there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Shows are usually $65, and you can buy those tickets online. I loved the play, and so did my friends (a mixture of people who haven't read the book, have read the book, and are currently reading the book, haha). They have a Poland Spring cooler (yay, free water) and sell snacks and drinks for you to nosh on before/after the show, or during the intermission. So how do I feel about making a plan to attend the $20 performances regularly from now on? Pretty damn good. read more

I was invited to a show of "Speaking in Tongues" put on by Cake Productions last night. I was reasonably pleased with the theatre itself and will probably come back to see shows at the Workshop again, but there were small issues that intruded on my enjoyment of the show. The good: The theatre is small but not tiny, the seats are old-fashioned wood and velvet(een) theatre seats, probably salvaged from a classy old theatre or something. The sound inside the theatre itself was great, and the actors had no problems projecting across the room, even at a low volume. The room was clean and I felt very comfortable watching the show. They even had a drink concession at the back of the room, and wine pours were generous. The bad: Despite being made of brick, the walls were pretty thin--we often heard pianos and cheering from the bar or restaurant next door. Sometimes, the soft noises fell in time with the action of the show, which was funny, other times, it was just a distraction. The sound system of the theatre left a little to be desired. Every now and then it would buzz or pop even if there was no music or sound effects going at the time. Occasionally, the humming would interfere with a character's soliloquy, which was uncomfortable. Overall, the theatre was pretty good. Like I said, I'd very likely see a show here again. read more

One of my favorite theatres in NYC, the Workshop always has the most interesting, diverse, and international work with a good mix of old and new. The shows tend to push theatrical boundaries in terms of form, which means that even if you don't love the show there's almost always something exciting to keep your attention. I've seen everything from Caryl Churchill plays about cloning to Ivo von Hove revisiting Ibsen and Moliere, from Tony Kushner examining the state of contemporary Afghanistan to the depressing personal meditations of Adam Rapp -- there's so much worth checking out at NYTW. Today we saw "Red Dog Howls" and two adjectives come to mind; powerful and compelling. The two main stars were *superb* in their roles and the storyline became increasingly powerful & emotional. During the last few minutes, I was literally in tears (we also had front-row/center seats, so the emotional wallop was really strong). The play will be there until around the end of October and I *highly* recommend it. read more

I saw a New Year's Day production of Once: The Musical and was very impressed by the construction of the theater space. From the outside and even from the lobby the theater does not seem as though it would be as large as it actually, but once you enter the performance space you'll be thrilled by the reasonably large stage, avante-garde exposed lighting, and open, yet surprisingly intimate, seating. I'm not certain how many actual patrons the theater can accommodate, but it must be at least two hundred. The performance itself was excellent. The theater space lends itself well for acoustics, which Once had much of. And for a smaller theater in the East Village I was impressed with the technical capabilities of NYTW. My experience was so pleasant, in fact, that I will continue to follow their offerings. read more

A wonderful and simple theater tucked away in the East Village. It is an extremely intimate setting in which not seat is a bad seat. The theatre was literally smaller than my college lecture halls. The staff was pleasant and helpful and there were a few refreshments available in the lobby. The acoustics were wonderful and I very much enjoyed "Through a Glass Darkly." I've never seen a production at NYTW which I didn't thoroughly enjoy! They provide thought-provoking entertainment on a very consistent basis. They aren't afraid to take risks in a city that is quickly becoming dominated by safe, Disney-esque tourist teasers. That sort of devotion to the arts is where NYC needs to return. If you can't take risks and show bravado in NYC, how can you expect anybody else to follow suit??!! I really can't recommend many Off-Broadway venues better than NYTW! read more

Spontaneity can be truly rewarding. I literally strolled into this theater without knowing anything about it (off-broadway) nor about the play that was being staged (Fetch Clay, Make Man). And wow I was blown away! Fetch Clay, Make Man is based on a true story about an unlikely friendship between Cassius Clay/Mohammed Ali (Ray Fischer) and a down-on-his-luck Hollywood star Stephin Fetchit (K.Todd Freeman). Superb performances by all actors, they were given a 10 minute standing ovation by the crowd. Enough said. Drop that weekend party plans and stop by here to see a play instead. This is one of the gifts of being in New York City, you can thank me later. read more

3.5 stars. I was here to catch "Top Secret - The Battle of the Pentagon Papers" and loved the production. However, the review here is for the theatre, not the show. Tucked amidst restaurants along 4th street, this theatre exudes a very neighborhoodly feel. Though old, it has a very welcoming feel to it. The small concessions bar offers free tea/ coffee to members and has reasonably priced snack items and other drinks. The theatre itself is old, but cosy. Come by to check it out sometime. read more

Reasonably priced off Broadway theater in the heart of East Village. From the 2 plays seen they offer a diverse selection. Small intimate playhouse so every seat is excellent. Only complaint is seating is horrific. Looks like pressure treated wood with no support for your back. They give you a tiny pillow to sit on. I survived 90 minute play without intermission but anything longer would be a problem. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed play but deeply disappointed that during intermission, there was no typical warning that the second half was starting. Was in a quick bathroom pit stop, come back to doors closed and not allowed back in until after missing scene, and then was let into back row (rather than front row where my seat and party was). I was fortunate enough to see the recent production of "Othello," which was amazing, and this was a perfect location for it. It's an intimate space that puts you literally within touching distance of the actors. For this show, they reconfigured the space into three-quarters seating, with maybe 250 seats. They converted it into a military staging area, enclosing the entire theater in plywood, creating a completely immersive environment for the audience, The space is small enough that you're constantly aware of other audience members, which made us a community of witnesses to the downfall of this great man. It's exciting to go to a theater that takes risks and is committed to creating work that is challenging and highly theatrical. read more

NYTW qualifies for my "Da Shizznets" list for off-off broadway places where you can catch some of the coolest quality performances for cheap or in some cases free even. This year I found a partner in crime who knows the ropes (ushering, signing up on TDF, etc) and decided to take me along for the ride. I am forever grateful to her. The coolest thing about this theatre is that you can volunteer to usher for the shows and get to watch the show for free. The work is pretty light . Pretty much limited to taking people tickets at the entrance or showing them where their seat is all while displaying your pearly whites. That comes naturally to Moi! The theatre is not that big so it just takes about 10 minutes to get a visual layout of where the seats are. About 10 minutes before the show you just pick a seat among the empty ones and enjoy the show. After the show's over you raise the seats, pick up whatever bits of trash there are, and collect any reusable program booklets. Piece of cake! This is particularly good if there's a show you're not sure about and want to screen it before you bring your entourage. I've done it three times and can say two of them I loved. The other was ok. Not a bad record when you consider...it was free! The theatre itself is beautiful and state of the art. Sound and acoustics flow nicely from the stage. The seating is comfortable. The theatre manager is really nice and amicable. Regardless of whether you paid for a show or ushered, you'll never leave feeling as if you wasted your time with any performance. Each show will make you think about things you hadn't considered or developed an opinion on along the lines of places like Culture Project and Public Theatre. That's a priceless feature. read more

LOVE this theater. I have seen two shows here - "Once" and "What's It All About?" Both were excellent productions, but I especially loved the size and intimacy of this theater. Definitely check out their offerings here and take a chance on a show you have never heard of. I believe that Once went to Broadway after here and I know other shows have as well. What an adorable, intimate theater! And I was shocked to find such a small-scale place actually serving BOOZE! I saw the show "Speaking in Tongues" by Cake Productions and it was a lot of fun. I recommend seeing any show here. My only gripe is that they seem to turn off the AC when the show is in progress so it can get a little hot and also there is only 1 bathroom that is on the 2nd floor. But still a good time overall! read more

I love this theater! I just saw "Peter and The Starcatcher" and I've already bought tickets to see it for a second time with friends! The talent displayed in that cast was so strong, seeing this show was truly a breath of fresh air from so-so broadway shows. This play was so creative in every sense! The sets were beautiful, the choreography was extremely clever and wonderful to watch. I won't give anything away but let's just say the show was so good I saw Nathan Lane in the audience laughing his head off. I will definitely be going back to NYTW for future performances. read more

I finally got my replacement tickets and I wish I could give them zero stars. Again, the performance was great, but the staff & service stinks. Othello was an almost 4 hour performance with 1, 15 minute break with one bathroom for all the guests. I knew enough to stay in my seat. I turned my phone on immediately as I was expecting a call and saw the time. Then they shut the doors after 13 minutes, rather than the 15. They fibbed or made a mistake. There were multiple seats left empty so they clearly didn't let folks back inside. Moreover, there were at least 3 seats open during the first half but I saw people outside trying to get a ticket. I wanted to support this theatre but cannot. As long as they get big names, people will pay a lot for their tickets...However, they are not connected to this community and the service is awful. Take your money to any of the many other theaters in this city. read more

Event staff poorly trained and managed from Transvestit with poor attitude at from desk to in theatre staff ordering Patrons around like they are children to the bathroom fire drill during 15 minute intermission. This certainly diminished the experience and the theater needs to do better if it hopes for more donations in the future. read more

This Off-Broadway house is terrific! It has extremely intimate views and does not go too far back so you never will feel too far away. The theatre is very bare bones and raw which was great for a show like Lazarus (which was great by the way!) I was in Orchestra Center Row D and the view was fantastic and probably the best in the place! Very enjoyable time here! read more
