Located in the middle of a neighborhood block in the Northwest side of Chicago, the bar has been around for years, but under new management the last few years, it is not is an Irish pub. Have some good old fun at this neighborhood divey ass bar. It looks like it's been here for many years: many have come through, and many crazy memories the regulars will blabber about all night long. Newark Nook is out of the way. For sure it's not a destination for those looking for hip bars and clubs. This is a place for cheap drinks and sports. Cheap beer. It only has a few basic on tap, and not much of the local craft beers either. The good thing is the price though. Has quite a bit of cheap liquor. It's about $5 a pour. There's also lots of drink specials. Besides drinking, people like to play the jukebox. There's also a few TVs, so this is a hangout for the neighborhood on game days. Low key atmosphere. There's no bros or those types around here. For sure the neighborhood around it has changed. It seems too upscale for this kind of bar, and this bar is out of place to be honest. If you're looking for a quiet, out of the way not updated bar, this is it. This is NOT the kind of place for people who like to go out to be seen. This bar is on a residential street, and is probably meant for neighborhood folks. There is a sign on the inside of the exit door that states that you must respect the neighbors and leave quietly. This was a last stop for us before going home, and was a nice change from the loud college kids that were at the previous places. The crowd was mature, and laid back. I can't say that I would make this a weekly stop, however, if I wanted to go out for a drink and not be hassled, I might go here. Sometimes, low key is just what I need. read more

This bar is true Chicago. Located on a quiet residential streets of bungalows and wide lawns, Newark Nook is a bar in a 100+ year old home. I met some friends there on a Sunday night for drinks, so the place was pretty slow, but they still had some hot dog fixings out from an earlier buffet and hand-printed posters advertising a Christmas party at the bar the night before. The ladies' bathroom has a remarkable selection of lotions and hairsprays (some look like they might be from the 80s). I give the Newark Nook 4 stars because it's important that places like this exist. It's family-owned, community-supported and has history and longevity. But, like the city I call home and love, it is flawed - sometimes even cringe-worthily so. The bartender was responsive - definitely not rude. But he certainly wasn't welcoming, warm or friendly. Even though I'm a northsider and my two friends are Norwood Parkers born and bred, we felt like outsiders. The back walls are covered in framed photos of cops - mainly of cops in riot gear. Some of cops in riot gear clashing with protesters. My favorite was the photo of a line of cops with shields and batons and a caption reading "Welcome to Chicago. Now sit down and shut up." So this probably isn't the place to wear your "I Can't Breathe" shirt or reminisce about your Occupy Chicago days. I hope Newark Nook sticks around but, like a lot of Chicago neighborhoods, it's rooted in a time and place and attitude that should evolve. read more

Call me old-fashioned, but I like smaller bars "where everyone knows your name". First visit tonight and you can tell this is the type of bar where you can become a regular. If you like to listen to rap or hip-hop, this is not your bar. The bar is full of country music and classic rock (with some 80s hairband to mix it up). An awesome neighborhood bar. The neighborhood here is filled with police officers and firefighters so this is inevitably a cop/firefighter bar. They have a good selection of beer and all the liquor you could possibly need. It's an old school neighborhood dive bar - no food, cleanliness is okay.
