My girlfriend and I went on a walk with her frenchie- Tinkerbell yesterday. I was so glad she invited me to join them. I hadn't been over to walk in Newhall since Covid. There was a nice wide trail for us to follow and Tinkerbell could sniff around without worrying about foxtails We walked by the dog park where we visited with dogs in the park thru the fence During Covid we would grab takeaway from Popeyes and have a picnic in the park- then walk it off with a stroll/ so it was I nice memory of dating my hubby during Covid/ getting back to nature read more

Newhall Park is a large, neighborhood park not far from where I live. It has many things to recommend it, and yet it has been ages since I've been there - maybe I'm guilty of the "grass is always greener" syndrome. But finally, my wife and I returned on the recent Sunday and were reacquainted with all it has to offer. It's a good park for walking: there's a flat, dirt path that circles the park; I didn't measure it, but it's a decent length, especially if you make multiple rounds. Along the way you see the park has a large bocce ball court, a popular dog park, and a good sized hill for cardio purposes with the Concord Vietnam Memorial on the top. A weekend adult soccer game was going on in the middle of the field. On the other side of the park is a pond (we saw an egret, ducks and geese), and a marsh-like area with tons of cattails. Galindo Creek, heavily shaded with trees, borders the edge of the park. A number of benches let you take a break when you need it from your walk. Newhall Park is a little rough around the edges visually. There's none of the graceful elegance of a Walnut Creek Larkey Park, with its paved path, lush green grass and stately trees. Newhall's grassy areas are functional, but look beat up with numerous dead spots (maybe blame the soccer). The walking path is hard dirt, but can be messy after a rain. The parking lot also is unpaved, and is in poor condition with bumps and holes. We noticed a number of cars parked along Turtle Creek Road prior to the park entrance. But these are minor concerns. In the uber-populated East Bay, any park is a welcome break from wall-to-wall homes, stores and concrete. Newhall Park is an easy way to get out and breathe the fresh air, and deserves the popularity it enjoys. That Walnut Creek park may have greener grass, but sometimes that park down the street is all we need. read more

My heart melts for Newhall Community Park. I know it's labeled as a "dog park" but it's seriously so much more than just that. While you will encounter your fair share of cute little doggies, you'll also be exposed to the beautiful views of Galindo Creek along with tons of active ducks and scenic walking and hiking trails. Before I started exploring other parts of the Bay, Newhall Community Park was my go-to park for light hiking and relaxation. And while I admit that I don't get out to this park nearly as much as I used to, it always feels like I never left when I sporadically decide to make a visit. This is definitely that local gem that you wanna tell everyone about, but not really. Sometimes I just wanna be greedy and keep it all to myself. But then, I think about how everyone should enjoy this glorious park. I love going for walks here. There are two main paths that run parallel to each other that run throughout the park. I usually connect here from a trail that runs through the Markham Nature Arboretum. The trail stops briefly behind Mel's Diner and picks right back up again across the street. There's a concrete hill with a gate in front. This trail will connect you right to Newhall Community Park. If you feel like you're lost, just look for a green street-like sign that says "Newhall Pk" at the top of the hill. If you keep going straight down the path, it'll lead you there. I love that you can veer off onto other hiking trails here too. The California Riding & Hiking Trail runs through this park too and will connect you to the Concord side of Lime Ridge Open Space. There are some great inclines that will really get your heart pumping. One of the trails actually leads to the Concord Vietnam Memorial. Also at the top of hill are sweeping view of Mount Diablo and the rolling Contra Costa hills. The views are truly breathtaking, even in the dead of summer. Speaking of summer, it gets extremely HOT out in this area. If you plan to hit the trails during when it's hot, make sure you lather up with sunscreen and bring plenty of water because most of trails are exposed with minimal shade. The actual park itself it just darling. There's a huge grassy field and a dog pit that's perfect for wandering dog play. The ducks like to hang around in the grass too, so you might get to see them walking around. Galindo Creek sits right in the middle of the park. If you can find a nice shady spot near the creek, do it! The views of the creek are so peaceful. It's a nice place to picnic too. There's also a small playground making this park perfect for the kiddos. It's just an all-around great local park with so much to offer. read more

Just love this park. The packed gravel-sand trails are wonderful. The park isn't crowded. I have found people to be pleasant in passing and in general to control their dogs. I've been taking my small 15 lb dog on a leash for walks there and we both love it. The ponds with all the waterfowl are just delightful. Near the reeds you can hear lots of little birds and frogs. I admit rather tempted to not leave a review, as now it's nice that there are people, but not crowded. There's always a bench coming up where you can pause for a while and enjoy your surroundings whether it's a shady or sunny spot. The dog park - there's a small dog and large dog area is rather on the small size and really intended for dogs to play with each other. My dogs isn't into other dogs much as he'd rather be with people. If you want a place where your dogs can meet and play with a lot of other dogs -- seems like this fits the bill. read more

It's funny how I live so close to this park but never stopped to enjoy it until now. My son would have lacrosse practices here during the off season. I would drop him off and pick him up before he learned how to drive. Then he drove himself and I no longer had a reason to visit. It was a beautiful night and we decided to get some fresh air and head over to Newhall Park with the family after dinner. My husband and daughter rode their bikes while my son and I walked. Lots of families were out enjoying the weather or letting their dogs play and get some exercise in the dog park. The bathrooms are kind of sketchy and dark when you close the door. Thankfully there is running water to wash your hands. Parking is plentiful. People were social distancing- some wearing masks, some not. But we're outdoors and there's so much space to walk freely without ever getting too close to anyone. Everyone was friendly and said hello as you passed them by. The geese were honking and roaming around minding their own business. This is their park after all. LOL Newhall Park is lovely especially during the evening when the sun sets. I think I will have to visit more often. read more

This is absolutely the best park in Concord. It has everything to offer: ponds, hills, trails, jogging routes... Moreover, people who are regulars here definitely adhere to social distancing rules and super respectful. Although i have closer parks to my house, i like this one the most. A small dog owner's DOG PARK REVIEW There's a reason smaller and larger dogs have different play areas, people Based on the pics and reviews, we were happy to take the extra 40 minutes it took to get there because the park seemed so inviting and a perfect place for my little terrier to get a little exercise after flying all day. Sadly, my dog and I were only able to stay for 15 minutes. It shouldn't be so hard to explain to a larger dog owner why his animal can't be in a small dog area especially after you've explained that your small dog has been abused and attacked by a larger dog....BUT I did my best to explain to Romeo and Juliet's ( 2 adorable Dalmatian puppies ) owner that no matter how sweet his dogs were, my dog would be triggered if they were to crowd him -then he would snip and while most likely his dogs wouldn't become aggressive. Who knows, right? Plus, my dog wasn't going be able to run around freely because he's afraid of larger dogs... Upon pointing that his dogs were twice the size of a dog that should be in the small dog park, I was told that my dog has a problem, I have a problem and maybe we should leave. Bad dog park etiquette to say the least! Plus, shame on all the other locals...No one stood in my defense because they all knew and liked the Dalmatians owner and have small dogs without a history like mine. read more

This is a large park, with many options. They have bocce ball courts, tons of trails for hiking or jogging, and huge fields that you can play with your dogs. There's even a special dog park. The day that I visited, there were tons of dogs running for balls and just having a great time. I think the owners were having a great time as well, although I did not see any of them chase after balls. The bocce courts were all flooded today, since we have had record rain in the last few days. Even so, I thought the facilities there looked pretty good. The parking is pretty generous, although the Lots can get sort of muddy. Ditto for the trails. There is no charge at all for parking. Similarly, the park is free. I did not come across any restrooms, although I'm sure there are some somewhere in the park. I did not see any maps or brochures at the parking lot. That would be an improvement. I think the park generally falls a little short of the East Bay Park system. The park also is the starting point a little-known trail called the California hiking and Riding Trail. It goes off into the Hills right from the park. There was no one else on that trail this morning. It might have had to do with the fact that the trail was very sticky clay, and my feet ended up caked with dirt. Oh well. So overall, a really fun place to take your kids or your dogs to go for a run. read more

I'm New to this park, But love what I'm seeing from this park . This park is awesome it has a very nice trail to go running or walking on...and lots of green open space.. I love how the sun is out and how beautiful it is in this weather. This place is perfect for bringing dogs too , has a very nice dog park area where you can have all the dogs interact with each other. So looks like right now the dog area is closed for some reason, but I like how its set up one area has a large gated place for them all to play with each other and there is a smaller caged area for them all to play with each other.. So depending what size dog you have they are complimenting your needs. I don't have any kids but I did walk past a nice kid zone area too with swings and kids thing.. Perfect picnic spots and grass area to just relax at. I also walked by a nice lake that is around the trail with a bunch of ducks and geese. BIG NEWS: Newhall Park now has a playground! (Dez wrote this a month before I did, grrrr) Newhall is a slightly unusual park. It has a combination of features unusual for a city park: Mt. Diablo view, dog park, soccer fields, mountain bike area, veterans memorial, bocce ball courts, duck ponds -- but few picnic areas, and no playground. So when I've been there in the past, it's gotten good usage for these things, but has not been a good "let's go to the park and have lunch while the kids play around" park. This has not bothered me during most of my years living here, but after we had a baby, it turned out to not be a good place to take her. Fast forward to today. Mom was at a girlfriends gathering, and my daughter and I had a half hour before going to get her. Against my better judgment, I took her to Newhall. Voila: a playground that was only two months old! It's located between the two heritage oaks, it's fenced in, and the play set resembles the larger one on Cowell Road. Soccer turf was not sacrificed for the playground. Word is getting out, and it's already getting good usage. Thumbs up to Concord for this much-needed addition! As for me, this three-star park has been bumped up to four well-deserved stars. read more

Far and away the best park in suburban Concord (East Bay Regionals and Mt. Diablo are beside the point). Excellent split dog parks (for the bigs and the littles), brand new playground for the kids, soccer field, softball field, bocce courts, tons of open space, Memorial Hill with gorgeous views of the entire Clayton-Concord-Martinez-beyond area, three separate parking lots, tons of turtles/geese/ducks, and a 1-mile loop of a gravel running path. I come to this park regularly for hill runs, but have been here more times than I can count in the last 15 years for parties, hangouts, bocce ball games, sunset walks, early morning runs, etc. It's a do-it-all kinda park that caters to pretty much anyone. Major points scored for being clean, well-designed and safe. Thank you for existing! Concord needs many more places like this. read more

Gorgeous little park hidden in a residential area in Concord. From all the reviews, I wasn't expecting much. After walking around the entire perimeter of the park for 2-2.5 miles, I was blown away by this hidden gem in Contra Costa County. The best part of this park is hiking up this ginormous mountain to watch the sunset. No need to join a gym if you live close to this park--running up and down the hill get you in shape without putting a dent in your wallet. read more

I grew up living next to this park. Literally like 100 feet from my front door. Back in the day, my brother would fish here every day, my mom would jog here, and I would ride my bike or feed the ducks. The island in the first lake was affectionately known to us as 'duck island'.. This is were all the nests of duck eggs are.. Stupid mean kids would wade across and steal the eggs. I once saw a mamma duck kick a wanna be cool kids ass until he ran away crying! Lol. Occasionally bro would find an injured duck and we would take care of it and then take it back to its family. We used to slide down the waterways on our butts because the rocks were slippery. We caught craw dads with hot dogs. Memorial hill is still fun. Steep. I didn't think so when I was young, but it is.. Names of some fallen soldiers are proudly displayed and there is shade and picnic tables and views forever. Wonderful picnic spot! Nowadays there is a dog park and bocce courts. Although still as beautiful, just like everywhere else, bad people are everywhere. There was a murder here last year and amidst the joggers and lovers in plain site you can witness drug deals and so on. My mom still lives here and I can't say I don't worry about her being so close to who knows.. Anyways, a few miles of trails and 2 lakes stocked each year with fish. Memorial hill, bocce, gated dog play areas, and beautiful scenery plus my childhood memories make this park 4 stars. It would be 5, but those people that make me worry about mom cost a star.. Hey! My friend suggested we meet at this park to check out the meteor shower. The spot was pretty great from the top of the hill. There's plenty of parking. The climb up the hill isn't so bad and if you don't mind, you can see the glow of a few stores from the hill as well. They also have bocce ball here which I believe is free! I may have to go here some time to check it out on a nice day. Lots of parks close at dusk, so this one is pretty great for star gazing. read more

Now this park right here... Carries so many memories for me... Every year my family would have the Easter egg hunt here for the kid's... This place is great for exercise also in fact my high school Clayton Valley used to run into the park everyday for our 1 mile run... This was a good place to ditch school and go hang too... lol Glad I got rid of those habits... lol There is a hill with a US and CA flag at the view top with some great views facing MT Diablo and all over the east bay really depending on how clear the day is. There are also many trails that lead you up to the very top of your can cheat and go another way but now that I'm an adult I realize that the other way is actually much harder just happens to be a little shorter! lol Next time I'm visiting in the Bay area I plan to take my family here and have a picnic and let the kids fly some kites :) read more

You Know What?! I have a confession? I LOVE Yelp! Don't tell my husband - he might get jealous. But I do. You see - Yelp helps me find everything I will ever need in this sweet life of mine. This hidden gem is one of them. My pups have been craving to spend time at the park with other pups! This park was a great way to socialize my boston terrier and shih tzu. They had a ball! At first my shih tzu was a bit afraid and stuck close to me but she started to loosen up and play with the other pups. The best thing about this place is that they separate the big dogs from the small dogs. We had a ball and will definitely be back. Another plus is that they had doggie poop bags for your convenience and even had water bowls. I brought my own cause I didn't want my pups to drink from the bowl as I saw that other doggies were using the thing as a urinal. We met a little girl who had a jack russell and she kept play with Casey, our shih tzu and asked us if she had a crown cause she sure looked like a princess. Super cute! Love this place and will try to bring the pups as much as possible. Tons of fun for the dogs and owners too! read more

The dog park here is my favorite in this area. The small dog park is spacious enough even with 20 pups, it is still roomie enough for them to run. The grounds are grassy and pretty well kept. Dog trash bags are always readily available. It is a hit and a miss when you come, though. Some days there will be tons of dogs and other days/times there won't be anybody. read more

Newhall has a very well maintained dog park. It's the nicest in the area that little Maddie and I have been to. There's a separate area for small dogs, water fountains/bowls, and even poo bags . . . not that all the owners are conscientious enough to use them . . . well that or they are too self-absorbed in conversation with other owners to pay any attention to their dog, but I digress! Anyway, one of the big reasons I love this place is that you don't feel like a park outcast coming here. I love going on walks here almost every afternoon. Just about everyone brings their dogs out to the dogpark, there is a nice, open area for the "big boys" and then a smaller enclosure for your more petite pet. The walk up to Memorial Hill provides a lawn space to hang out (or make out, as I've stumbled upon several teenagers doing) and dig the panoramic views of most of the East Bay. Gorgeous place to sit and watch the sunset. Beware of the hundreds of birds who think they own the place and will eat you alive. The geese are nuts. Lots of cute little creeks to catch crawdads in, and nooks and crannies for private picnics if you want. Always fun to watch kids playing soccer or pickup volleyball games. read more

Newhall is a true community asset. This park has soccer fields, dog areas, ponds, bocce ball courts, and open spaces for Concord residents to enjoy. There are also bike paths through here, walking opportunities, and secluded places to lie in the shade on a breezy afternoon. For those of you into bocce ball, the Concord Bocce Ball Federation plays here every night during the summer (for reasonable team prices). They're friendly people who don't complain when a strange person with a camera walks through and starts taking pictures. I legitimately go here at least once a day, typically twice -- before and after work. This is a good place to relax and de-stress. On Friday nights there's a potluck in the dog park that's absolutely worth taking in if you have a dog or two, or more. The dog park people are a good bunch who generally have good, well behaved dogs. read more

Ducks, ducks, ducks... ducks, ducks! I've grown up coming to this park. Year after year, small tweaks have been made that really progress the improvement of this great park for people and dogs alike. Don't question it, but I've also seen witnessed horse crossings here. So let's start with the Pros: Nice round ovalish trail (about a mile loop) for walking, running or biking. Very tranquil environment and lots of space for dogs to run around at the dog park. They have a play structure and lots of field space. Bocce ball on Tuesdays!! am I right! Let's not forget about the Vietnam Memorial atop the ever so big Memorial hill. Cons: Wish they improved on the lakes. Lots of duck poo in the grass area but what can you do when it's their territory, I don't mind. This will always be one of my favorite parks to visit. Ya'know this could be a cat park if there were more cats, just something to think about. lol XD read more

I've lived in the area for about 8 years. I've always enjoyed Newhall for it's "Paw Patch" or dog park but that's not all that it has to offer. B R I E F S U M M A R Y -- Usually plenty of parking -- "Paw Patch" is a dog park where dogs can run unleashed -- There's an area for big dogs and small dogs (separated) -- Plenty of area to walk, jog or run with or without your animals/children -- Top of Newhall's hill has a Vietnam War Memorial & nice view -- Several hills to walk/climb/hike to get to Memorial -- Large picnic area (available for rent) -- Bocce Courts (league info is posted on banners) -- Turfed athletic fields (usually used for soccer, etc) You can access Newhall from Newhall parkway (near Clayton) or from Turtle Creek Road (runs between Ayers and Treat). There's usually plenty of parking even when there's a lot of stuff going on. I came here this past weekend to trek up the big hill. I've been trying to keep my exercise routine varying so Newhall definitely delivered with some huge hills. They were a lot bigger than Lime Ridge's hills. After you get to the top you can enjoy the nice view, a bit of a breeze and show your respects at the Vietnam Memorial. read more

Not a bad Park. Always curious to check out new local trails or parks providing trails, I decided to give this place a stroll after discovering it last month. Lots of areas for playing ball and having picnics, including a nice playground for the kiddos. There is a nice lake surrounded by the park and homes, all equipped with the usually entertaining flocks of goose and ducks. Nice little creak that runs into the lake. I really enjoyed walking up the main hill and discovering not only the great views of Concord, but the Vietnam War Memorial Stone ingrained with a few of those who fought for us. It was a great remembrance of this memorial weekend. Overall, its not one of my favorite parks, though its certainly enjoyable and provided me with a nice little semi, scenic walk. read more

Besides, I always tell Bax: "Look, bro, if you're gonna take a dump, you have to keep your head on a swivel!" You never know when that random bully is gonna snuff you out before you can adequately pinch one off. The big dog park is large. It even has an uneven surface so it actually appears even larger to the untrained eye. Sweet spot for big dogs to get their run on and chase stuff. The small dog park is much smaller, yet adequate. Both parks are extremely well maintained. No paths though, so watch where you walk. Don't be left saying "That turd came outta no where!" read more

My dog loves coming to this park. We've been coming here whenever we're in the area, about twice a month for the pass 5 years. We've always had good experiences, as the dogs and their owners are pretty friendly most of time. Today we went in the early afternoon and was there about 15 minutes before my little girl ( a 10 lb.pekingnese) was attacked by a pitbull that crawled under an opening in the fence, that divides the big dogs from the little ones. Thank God I was right there and was able to pull that beast off of my dog. The owner said he had just gotten this dog from a pound. He also jumped the fence to get a hold on his new not-so-friendly Pitbull. Neither dog was hurt, I just want to give everyone a heads up. Always keep an eye on your dog, big or small. Anything can happen in a split second. Now that we are home I'm realizing that it could have been tragic and I'm not sure my dog will ever want to go back. I'm just thankful she wasn't injured or eatin alive. Before this incident, I would have gave the dog park area a 5 star. But after today and watching that vicious dog attack my baby I am giving it a 1 star until those fences are secured. Please help us keep our pets safe. read more

Seperate play areas for big dogs and small dogs. Drinking stations. Poopy bag ammenities. And plenty of friendly dogs w/ smelly butts for you pal to sniff until their heart's content. This park has got everything you need for a healthy and fun day at the dog park!! Friday Nights - I've heard that some dog owners get together w/ lawn chairs and their favorite bottle of wine for some sort of a Boozer/Dog Lover party. I'm a fan of this park because it's very well maintained and also the breed of dog I have is welcomed there! The only minor complaints I do have has nothing to do with the park itself but rather then ppl who go there. 1. Don't bring your small dog onto the large dog side...your asking for it 2. Follow your dog and clean up his/her poo... I know I don't want to step in it 3. If your dog is socially challenged...DON'T BRING HIM TO THE PARK!!!! I've been bitten 3 times since being in that park!!! Not because the dog is aggressive towards me but because they are dog aggressive and I happen to have a dog who doesn't really respect space... So she tends to try and play with everyone, even if they aren't interested....so I wind up getting the brunt of it when I try to bring her attention elsewhere.. Oh Joy!!!! This is a good place for dogs to be off leash. It is not the park that's the issue, it is the management of the place. I get the fact that they close it when it rains. But to leave it closed for s week after it last rained? That's just lazy. During the summer they overwater it so much that it has huge puddles but they keep it open. I have been to this park several times with my dogs and always enjoy it. It is a beautiful park and the dog part of it is very nice. The part for the large dogs is wonderful for them to run around in and have fun. There are benches for the two-legged types to sit and rest while four-legged types run off some of their energy. I love Newhall Park. I think there is something for everyone. Bird lovers get to watch the geese, ducks, egrets, in the ponds. There are benches and barbeques. There is Memorial Hill where the view from the top is fantastic. There are fields used for soccer and baseball and there are bocce ball courts. Trails run through for running and biking. There is Paw Patch that has an area for little dogs and another for big dogs. There is a water fountain for people and water for dogs too. Dispensers for poop bags are all around so there is no excuse for dog owners not to pick up after their dog . There are lights that go on automatically when it gets dark; so, on those days when it's dark by 5, dog owners can still get their dog out to the park after work. Mid May to October, Paw Patch has a potluck on Friday evenings. The little dog area calls this event Bark and Whine and the big dog area calls it Bark-a-que. The food is set up on the little dog side with custom made tables that attach to the fence. The only downside is that dogs tend to beg for food rather than exercise and play. Ever since I was a little girl, I've always gone to this park whether for a nice run, to take my dog to their dog park or to just spend some time with the family. Their trails are very nice, one that goes all around the park and then one goes up to a memorial with some great sights. It's definitely a great place to exercise. You use to be able to feed the ducks here but I guess now you can't sense it messes up the ducks eating cycle and brings pests in. Their dog park is great as well. They have a separate place for the big dogs and one for small dogs. They usually keep it very clean. I highly recommend this place for a great laid back day, bbqs, soccer matches or anything else you'd want to do at a park! :) read more

I've been here twice with my dog, Lucy, and she loves it! We usually take a nice stroll the long way around the park to get to the fenced in area (paw patch). My dog loves taking in the scenery and seeing all the birds, squirrels and gophers around. In the paw patch area, there is a fenced in area for large dogs and a separate area for small dogs. Everyone is really friendly and the park is nice and clean. Lots of buckets around for thirsty doggies with both sunny and shady spots. Plenty of parking and trash cans for doggy waste around. Lucy can't wait to go back again and play! read more
