I went to Newport Academy (CT) in May 2022 to August of 2022 - 81 days. I LOVED it there. Although there were some crazy times and people who were struggling - it is easily one of my favorite psych stays I've had (and I've been to a LOT of programs!) I genuinely could not thank Newport enough. No matter how much I could give back, it would never be enough - because it's true when I say Newport Academy saved my life. I even had my 17th birthday in there, and although it sucked of course, Newport made me feel as welcome and comfortable as I could. I loved Newport so much I'm now an alumni advocate for them and I help out kids and their families get information about Newport for their decision to go or not! Newport has genuinely made such a huge and lifelong impact on me. If you're reading this and are thinking about going - I highly suggest thinking about it and taking it into consideration. I felt like I was in psych ward after psych ward with no real ending. I thought that all my life was going to be was in and out of hospitals. After Newport gave me stability, real hard work, and somewhere to feel uplifted and safe, they have made me realize that life is more than just hospitals. I'd like to thank all of the staff I've ever come into contact with - you all have shaped my stay for the better. But I will also like to give special thanks to Vadim and Haley. And my family therapist as well - I think her name was Jessica (If you're reading this I am SO SORRY I am so bad with names I had to dig everywhere to find your name and I can't find it LOL) You guys have truly changed my life in such a special way and even if I forget your name (so sorry..) It makes sense that people in California would see Newport Academy as a great thing because it fits. I think it's self help bordering on a cult in my opinion. It's not a shame to need help. It's a shame to exploit the people and families in that situation for financial gain. My Google review was similar and responded to in such a sterile way, it proves my point. I'm sure the reviews on Scientology are all 5 stars. Get your son or daughter in the military for a lifetime experience and GI Bill. If you want new age, group hugs- jump in the BMW, drive to Newport and don't forget your checkbook. read more

Having been to several locations to try to shake some of my more troubling tendencies and feelings, Newport was definitely my most positive experience. I stayed at the male house in California called the Paloma house, the staff were super chill and I felt I was able to open up to them with ease(which in my case was rare), and the living environment with my peers despite the Covid restrictions, was honestly an easy transition. The food provided was healthy and tasted good, and when we could eat was very reasonably spaced out and didn't leave me very hungry at all. Also, during my stay there were 4 stray cats( Tiny, Rona, Scruff, and Bongo) who happened to show up at the house uninvited! Staff handled the cats scenario well and provided me with some great memories. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to stay at Newport and I greatly appreciate all the staff. I Don't recommend this business because it seems like they care for only 1 thing!...MONEY!!! They will tell the Insurance and parents anything that they have to in order to keep the kids there as long as possible! They don't care about the kids at all! My family had the best experience at Newport. Starting with enrolling her into Newport, they were so helpful. My daughter was not safe to herself before Newport. Now she is safe. When she was in the program, the communication was great. Even after she left the program, Newport still supports our family through thier app, phone calls and alumni get togethers for my daughter. My 16 yr old daughter went there for 3 months. She got amazing help and guidance from all of the therapists and counselors there. She learned a lot of DBT skills there and is now home and thriving . The after care support from the team and groups for parental support is pretty awesome. read more

Newport Academy is truly life changing! I went to the adolescent program in CA for the full 3 months, and I only really have positive feedback. My assigned therapist was amazing (took some getting used to, though.), and towards the end of my stay, I had a kind and gentle counselor. The CCs were attentive and validating. They helped me when I was struggling and I can't wait to be able to talk to them again. The school program is difficult for me to comment on, as I didn't participate much in it, but I heard from others that it was great, too! The food was healthy and filling, just a little bland. However, the CCs offered seasoning, so that's an easy fix! Newport Academy is very structured. They had fun and engaging activities every day such as equine, art, yoga, music, dance, adventure therapy, crossfit, etc., and a structured therapist-led group almost every weekday. At the house I was at, we were given free time at snack time, and free time at night. After your 72hr time is up, you are allowed to call anyone on your calling list at scheduled times and for a certain amount of time that varies from house to house. There is a reward system for good behavior and coping skills. You can stage up. There are 5 stages- Orientation (72hr when you're first admitted), stage 1, stage 2, stage 3, and community leader. You get more privileges and freedom the more you stage up. (I think rewards vary from house to house, but the idea is there.) I went to Newport Academy due to crippling depression, anxiety, trauma, and SI. I would numbly watch tv every day because the thought of doing just about anything gave me unbearable and inexplainable anxiety that would send me into a downward spiral. It was only then that my parents and therapist decided I needed more help. I've been home from Newport for about a year, and they truly saved me. I went home with a kinder, more understanding home due to the weekly family therapy. I went home with coping skills that were healthy and reasonable. I would 100% recommend to anyone considering this for themself or their child. Thank you Newport Academy! :) read more

I was at Newport for three months! I had a blast! I could never appreciate the amount of therapy and the service that I got there! Of course, they were hard times. Nothing is perfect. But I couldn't appreciate Laurel, Nancy, Brandon, Alexa, Marcel, Sam, julia, Janelle!!! these people made my life and time there so much better! I have never felt more comfortable in a home besides my own. At the time I wasn't even on comfortable in my own home and they made the house feel like a Home. I still consider it a home to this day! This place made me feel so comfortable to be able to share who I am and what I can do and just be the best person that I can be! I love the staff and all the activitie! there's nothing I would change!! read more

Do not send your child to Newport Academy unless you just need a multi-week holiday from your kid for yourself from what is going on. Our child was overmedicated with gross negligence (she was given 5x the normal dose of a drug and was falling asleep throughout the day due to this), received poor treatment personally and professionally, and we basically got a net zero for her stay in treatment. All I can say is it is industrialized care to an extreme. Newport capitalizes on the insurance system while you get nothing except a big bill. As a newbie to treatment centers, I thought Newport might be a saving grace to what my family was experiencing - it was glorified babysitting. In the 4 weeks that my daughter was there, we never once had family therapy, which was promoted to us. I have been through various treatment programs since Newport-it was one of our first and by far our worst. I am not a complainer by nature but this program is basically a crime. My friend, who is an addiction teen therapist, warned me - she was right. The residential was bad, the outpatient - a complete joke. Newport is glorified babysitting. DO NOT SEND YOUR KID HERE. read more

Almost a year ago I went to Newport and it really changed me for the better. The staff and counselors were incredibly knowledgeable and compassionate, creating a safe and supportive environment for us to heal and grow. I met my best friend there and also discovered so much more about myself. The therapy sessions were personalized and effective and really helped me understand myself and develop healthy coping strategies. I would not be the person I am today without Newport. I would, however, like to add that I went on my own will so I was more open the activities and therapy. Some of the girls who had not gone on their own will took some extra time to adjust to the change. All that being said, I loved Newport and am currently an advocate for the alumni program and strongly recommend Newport to anyone who needs this level of care. read more

Very surprised by the other reviews. Our experience could not have been further from those reviews. Our son was at the Happy Valley house in Pleasanton for almost 30 days. Unfortunately, our insurance didn't cover more time, but that wasn't without the UR department at Newport fighting for it. That's just our beautiful health insurance system in the United States. The time our son spent there helped him immensely. We adopted our son at age 8 through the foster care system and he was dealing with a ton of emotional issues ranging from lack of self worth, body image dysmorphia, co dependency, and just overall chronic depression, which was magnified with substance abuse. He came out of Newport Academy like a different kid, with more confidence, less anxiety (he got off of his psyche meds even), and tools to face challenges he otherwise was unable to face. He put in a lot of work during his time there, really wanting to find a way to make this place work for him, and he had some major breakthroughs. His team of clinicians worked hard to help him identify triggers, to help articulate feelings, and to work through them in a healthy way. In addition to our son getting help, every other weekend there was a family component to the program that is fantastic. As a parent of a kid who suffers emotional issues, it's hard to keep it together. The program for the family was extremely helpful in providing us (the parents) the support we needed and helped provide us with tools as well. The Saturday family days were one of my favorite parts about the program. We realized, along with other families that participated, that our son was not the only one who lacked certain tools to help him through his trauma, that we too lacked certain tools to help him get through those times and ways to set healthy and clear boundaries. I am so thankful to all of the staff at Newport Academy. They were all amazing in their approach with our son and I am forever grateful he got to participate in this experience. My daughter was discharged because another girl said she put hands on her, supposedly. Well there was no proof, no marks, no witnesses, and it wasn't even reported for hours. Actually, my daughter was being bullied for days prior and nothing was being done about it. I tried to contact her therapist that day to see what happened and to see if she had talked to my daughter, but she would not respond to me. She was discharged/kicked out on a Sunday and I had no contact for four days till I finally called them. They gave me no discharge paper work, or any advice. They didn't bring in any therapist to talk to my daughter or the other girl to find out if it actually happened or to see if they were ok. I feel like they failed my daughter in so many ways. They should have brought in a therapist to see what actually happened and to see if she was ok. She was still a patient, and she was accused of something like a criminal. My daughter is not perfect, but she is not violent either. Since then I have finally got a hold of medical records, but they still won't send over information to any other places because a person is out of the office. That was six days ago. I was told it could be done in 1 day. So, my daughter still is being hindered my Newport Academy by the medical records department. The customer service is horrible. I cannot believe after she was discharged 4 days later I had to call someone to get discharge paperwork and just to talk to someone. It was only 4 lines long and pitiful at that, and they wanted me to sign it. Another thing that bother me about the program that my daughter told me is that they would hardly ever let them go outside. They had a beautiful acre fenced in lot. The staff were on their phones a lot, so the girls watched TV a lot, she said, especially on the weekends or played Nintendo Switch. I am kind of worried why this happened so much. I would highly recommend looking at other places other than Newport Academy for your family members and friends. This was a huge mistake for us and I hope other people dont make the same mistake we made. User's recommendation: I would never recommend anyone to go there. read more

After 30 days of treatment at Newport Academy Castro Valley (CA), our son (16) ran away with 2 other teens to find alcohol ! The staff found them in a grocery store and drove them back. By coincidence later in the day the period review occurred with our insurance (Anthem) and they denied more treatment ! I called Anthem and they told me that the primary diagnosis given by Newport was "psychiatric health mental issue" but if it was "substance abuse" they would accept more days ! We are very disappointed with Newport Academy and feel that they just made a diagnosis to "get rid" of our son... unless we pay a deposit of $7,200 for him to stay ! We should have chosen The Camp Recovery in Santa Cruz one month ago, what a waste of time and money ! So sad ... hope that we are the only ones "screwed up", be sure to ask for the primary diagnosis of your teen before the period review with your insurance: you can be up for the same unexpected sad surprise !! Please do not judge this institution based on disgruntled teenage reviews. As a parent of one the reviewers, I have to say our experience was not at all the picture that has been falsely told. From our very first call with Newport, they were kind, caring, and professional. This was an extremely difficult decision for our family but we love our son and they provided an abundance of options and resources to help facilitate healing in our family. The therapy list is extensive ranging from equine to yoga and more. Our son even gave us reports of learning to cook alongside a chef, working in the garden, and other activities. We were provided weekly sometimes daily insights into our son's stay. We were given multiple opportunities to visit. We got to work with a great clinical team of medical professionals that focused on not just addressing the concerns we had with our teenager but with us as a family. This staff was also very responsive to calls/emails whenever we had questions or concerns. After our son's discharge and the review he posted on 7/19/19, the Newport clinical team got together on a call to check in and understand his perspective but he refused to talk to them. Our child was safe and well cared for during his time at Newport and I would not hesitate to recommend them. read more

Our experience with with the staff and the program was amazing. The Program Director, Konika is very kind, understanding, patient and she is always willing to help you in any way possible. Quinn is the first person I interacted with, and she made me feel welcome and understood. She made sure that the financial process was arranged in the best way possible. She was understanding and worked with us in the best way possible. The counselors are knowledgeable and kind. Everyone there goes out of the way to help you and find the best way to assist with your specific situation. They are experienced and great at what they do. I would recommend this program to anyone who is dealing with teens who have mental or/and addiction challenges. There is always hope and this agency makes sure to support you all the way. I was admitted into Newport (maoli house in San Rafael) on April 9th and was discharged June 8th. All I have to say is don't go here. I here the houses in Southern California are great but at least the girls houses in Northern California are HORRIBLE! They are extremely unorganized, don't know how to do anything, and treat us like babies. When a girl would scream all the time, we were locked in the family therapy room and couldn't be in our rooms. This happened more than once. One night we didn't get our meds until MIDNIGHT! We are supposed to get them at 8pm. They don't know how to cut pills, lost all of our mail, would constantly lie to us and our parents. One of the employees even took me and one other girl in the car for 10 minutes so we could scream out the window because of how insane the house would be. One of he higher ups constantly lied to our parents and said anything to them just so they wouldn't pull us out. She called one of the girls entitled and told her mom she's a danger to us and said she threatens the girls which is NOT TRUE! This girl is really nice. Of course, the mom believed the higher up and kept her daughter in Newport. If you say anything on your phone call that's negative about Newport or anything about discharge or about what's going on in the house, they will hang up the phone call. We would lie to our parents. We told them it's going good so they wouldn't hang our call up. What they are doing now is all of the trained care coordinators are going to the redwood house and maoli gets new people every week who are being trained. Even the trained CCs don't know how to do their job, the trainees are awful! Absolutely no consistency. We are severely depressed , anxiety riddled , trying to get sober , etc. we NEED consistency !!!!!! On paper, this place seems amazing. If you're looking into going here , try Southern California. I don't know if it is actually good or not but i here it's a lot better than what I experienced. DONT GO TO NORTHERN CALIFORNIA GIRLS. I've heard bad things about the boys houses too , but I have no experience there. I met my best friends there, but the staff are horrible. There are three CCs that were amazing though but the majority is not. read more

I was really surprised to see bad reviews of Newport Castro Valley (CA) because our experience with them could not have been better. At every step of our journey, the staff was incredible. Before we made our decision to send our son there, I needed to hear more about their program so I called the clinical director. She spent over an hour with me explaining their program in detail - this was all without even knowing if we would even come. The therapists there were amazing - between the 30+ hours of therapy he received each week this summer through individual, group, family and other therapies (art, equine, adventure, yoga, mindfulness) it gave our son an opportunity to get more therapy in 3 weeks than he would have gotten in a full year of weekly therapy. They didn't just "treat the symptoms", they dug deep to get to the root cause of his depression and resulting substance abuse he was using to "not feel the pain". They gave him the tools to move forward to reframe the way he felt about himself and for us, a better way to interact with him through family therapy. He really became close to a few of his care counselors who were incredibly caring and gave him the daily encouragement he needed. His individual therapist and family therapist really "got him" and wouldn't let him hide behind his typical teenage bravado. The family weekends were like nothing I have ever experienced. Not only did the parent therapy provide the "guilt-free" time for parents to really talk openly about the challenges we have faced with our boys, but they also provided us with insight and education on how to better relate to them once they came home. Some of the greatest insights came from being able to participate in group therapy with all of the boys and their parents. To listen to the boys' perspectives of how they ended up where they were prior to treatment was one of the most honest and heartwrenching things I have ever heard. Their deep insight into their problems was profound, and I truly feel was a direct result of their therapy. Our son was actually torn about leaving when he did - he was ready to come home and move forward with his "new self", but he also had found incredible camaraderie with the other boys and had gained the self-confidence and self-esteem that had been missing from his life for so long. All group sessions at Newport start with going around the circle and answering "What are you feeling?" I am feeling very grateful for Newport Academy. read more

I noticed most of the reviews on here are from when the houses first opened. I was a client and the Maoli girls house right when it opened and it started off pretty chaotic and unorganized. Fortunately though, once the staff got settled in and the house got a routine it became such a healing environment. I was there for about 6 months (this is not average for the record I think Im one of the longest they have ever had) but I got to see the house really get established and I feel so lucky to have been a client there. It really did change my life for the better. I went from someone who could not function at all at home to someone who is able to work and go to school and volunteer and experience happiness. The staff at the Maoli house was absolutely incredible, I miss them more than anything, they became a second family for me. The biggest thing I can say is you have to want recovery, if you want to get better, Newport will do everything they can to support you through it, even after discharge. read more
