I do pro bono career counseling. My observations are based on multiple full days spent on site…read moremeeting with clients and staff. This review reflects what I personally observed and experienced during that time. Clients arrive and spend one to several days in Detox. Up to six people share one bathroom, and each client has a roommate. Nursing staff brings in food and checks on Detox clients around the clock. Then, clients move to cabins or two shared houses, and have to be driven to and from the main site at the start and end of the day with backpacks and no access to their rooms for about 15 hours per day. Clients spend from 9 am until about 9:30 pm in sessions, which consist of various types of therapy and AA-based meetings. There are occasional off-site activities including horse therapy and hikes. LISTENING TO SHARES is common. I witnessed various levels of staff preparedness. Taking attendance and dealing with paper appointment reminders can take significant time. There are three meals per day, and clients are served in two shifts. I heard clients share that the food is good if high in calories. Breakfast includes a daily scramble with various ingredients and there are sometimes short-order items; clients can also have instant oatmeal, smoothies, yogurt, fresh fruit, toast, coffee, fountain drinks, tea. Lunch and dinner are served hot and usually contain meat; salad is always present. Fare is generally American-grilled salmon, sandwiches, ribs, grilled vegetables, nachos, chicken breasts, pork cuts, etc. Special diets are accommodated, often with tofu. I witnessed many closures and significant waits with the office and nursing. Clients are required to do chores daily, such as working as dishwashers in the kitchen with professional equipment for 45-90 minutes. Clients get one nicotine run per week, rare haircuts, access to laundry every 10-14 days, and unannounced urine tests and K-9 visits. In my time there, I perceived the client base to be predominantly white. I heard multiple mentions of Burning Man, "spirituality," Jerry Garcia (whose death in or around here spawns many rumors), Buddhist centers in Berkeley, temples in the woods, henna, travels to Asia, dharma recovery as Buddhist rather than Hindu. I witnessed many racially-implicated incidents, as well as white-male shares numerically dominating many sessions. Sometimes there are readings from the LGBT AA book; flags went up for Pride Month. I witnessed some clients being allowed to curse at others publicly. There are views of a valley, and deer walk through daily. There are significant hills and stairs. Many of the 12 acres are off-limits. There is a small gym. In summer, you can use the pool, but it can be closed by staff due to client behaviors. At times, there are not enough seats for clients. After five days with no device access, clients can use their phones and/or laptops from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm during free time. There are rules around vaping, smoking, device use, sleeping during sessions, but I witnessed a wide range of compliance, staff response, and staff breaking rules. Families can bring clients ONE bag ONE time per 30 days with various supplies, which are checked. Clients can order FIVE Amazon items per 30 days. Family or friends can visit every Saturday, and are expected to participate in some programming. I often felt very upset in this space.

On several occasions, people with ZERO backgrounds in medicine were grilling me about the severity of my back pain and how I could maybe tough it out because that day each of these 5 virtually identical meetings were just too important to miss. I was very clear checking into this place I had herniated disk. Last but not least This place charged me and my insurance a fortune but couldn't pass on the chance to make more money forcing patients to do all the cleaning of the facility on a daily basis. Look. I'm not saying they don't have their points and aren't benefiting for some, but for me personally, these guys need to staff better and prioritize recovery instead of rigid structure and authoritarian dogma. It's funny because I went to a meeting with my brother when he got his one year chip and it's like this program has their own community/ fellowship. And the best drug counselor I've ever had. I've been looking for therapy like this, and the answers I got at Olympia House, for 20 years. They are the most skilled, caring, and professional team of people I've ever worked with in mental health. I'm dual diagnosis, so I've been seeing professionals for my mental health for 25 years. Some of their curriculum is custom, developed in house by the psychologists there--you won't find tools like these anywhere else. I have a custom designed "addictive system" I use every day to track where I am in my recovery and mental health. I use this not only to prevent relapses, but correct myself if I run off course, and this works not just for substance relapses but also things like depression, anxiety, and anger. Their website doesn't reflect this, but they take Kaiser Permanente insurance now. That's the only reason I was able to come here. I know reviews are inflated on the Internet, but please trust me, I swear with every fiber of my being and every ounce of integrity I have, this is likely the best rehab in California. If you have trauma, and most people do, or some form of PTSD, this is the place you should go. They also focus on finding meaning and purpose in life--and they will definitely help you with that. They also allow you to come back to the rehab twice a year for 2-3 days for free! They call it a "tune up". No one else I know of does this. There's also free group therapy for alumni (a process group led by one of the therapists there) once a week via Zoom. I would wake up many times in OH in disbelief that this place exists at all, and that I got to be a resident here. They've made an enormous difference in the outcome of my life.

In my opinion, informed by my own experiences and by witnessing the maltreatment of others,…read moreNorthgate's top priority is increasing profit regardless of how much their cost-cutting modus operandi and associated perpetual negligence puts resident/patients at-risk resulting in easily avoidable suffering, illness, isolation, malnutrition and even patient mortality all due to their far-too-frequent negligence and immoral, unprofessional lack of concern for client safety and overall health. To state it euphemistically, while there are Northgate staff who display a high level of caring, responsibility and professionalism, there is a statistically significant population of NG staff including medical doctors, upper management et al, whose lack of concern, engagement and failure to meet the basic CA expected standard of care is so poor that their disregard for resident/patients' well-being results in frequent severely undesirable outcomes. Failure to diagnose, failure to prescribe and failure to treat even the most obviously severely ill resident/patients who ultimately end up enduring a miserable day-to-day existence too-often en route to knocking on Heaven's door. One out of hundreds of examples: the single medical Dr. on-call here along with the D.O.N. et al decided that ignoring increasingly severe respiratory distress symptoms (i.e. the terrifyingly long death-rattle wheeze of a resident-patient discharged from a hospital to N-Gate to recover from a preexisting serious respiratory distress diagnosis) was perfectly fine even with multiple resident/patients testing positive for COVID-19 and then quarantined at the exact time this resident's breathing went from an alarming cause for concern to horrifying as anyone hearing his liquid-y death-rattle knew instantly that he was going to die very soon unless placed in the care of a specialist in a hospital setting and sure enough: Three days after he began presenting symptoms of the severe chest infection (COVID-19) going around - which I had suffered through for a full month yet unlike other residents I was not tested for COVID-19 until AFTER my symptoms were fully extinct - the poor gentleman expired. And on top of his preventable death, the actions of staff re: resuscitation were both inappropriate and far too late as they did not begin compressions until 30 minutes after discovering him unresponsive and quite dead but still warm; timing it so that they began resuscitation just as the paramedic arrived and sharply informed NG staff that they had failed to notice the patient's DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) bracelet and as this was not the first time such an incident had occurred the paramedic chastised the NG staff quite severely for once again failing to pay attention to important patient information details such as the fact that he did not desire resuscitation in the event of physical death and so on. The paramedic quickly reviewed an extensive list of past NG staff mistakes and warned them that moving forward they'd best keep their eyes on the ball so to speak or he'd be professionally, legally and morally obligated to file a report on behalf of patients made to suffer needlessly even unto death thanks to NG staff carelessness. The above is just one example of negllasuffering and/or death-via-negligence from a total population of disturbing instances of medical staff ignoring severe symptoms and pretending-at-responsible-behavior when in reality their actions reflected the unprofessional profit uber alles Northgate status quo. In short, Northgate Post Acute is the antithesis of a quality, responsible, caring and productive skilled nursing facility. Northgate Post Acute is an endless nightmare of criminal neglect resulting in needless suffering, illness, injury misery and even death. As others have noted, Northgate is not a place to send family and loved ones for any form of medical care as the LLC that operates Northgate and other Nor Cal SNF facilities cares nothing for the well-being of clients and instead prioritizes securing as much wealth as possible by billing Medi-Cal over $10k a month but providing super low-quality room, board and the absolute most inadequate forms of nutrition (food so bad you can't believ), diagnosis, PT, medical treatment and every other integral component of a skilled nursing or other medical facility. Bottom line: Northgate Post Acute is the antithesis of quality health care. And like a vast majority of U.S. skilled nursing, physical rehabilitation and nursing home facilities, cares nothing about providing healthcare (they will ignore their own Dr's diagnosis and specialist consultation orders for months and years, intentionally delaying every form of needed medical including imply "dropping" patients outright). Northgate is, in short, a prime example of the horror of the USA's for-profit health care system, the ONLY for-profit health system in the free world and the reason why our #1 cause of bankruptcy is healthcare costs.

This facility has every sign of a negligent care facility which is criteria for a lawsuit: my brother was depressed, he lost 20 pounds because the food is inedible, he had bed sores, he had a bandage that was not changed for six weeks, he was hallucinating for lack of sleep because of others screaming all night, he was laying in a bed for 23 out of 24 hours, except for mandatory physical therapy, which was only done because it was mandatory. He was sitting in a dirty adult diaper for up to three hours before being changed. When the administration was confronted about all of this misery, "Alberta" said she was unaware. Go figure . . .
