I was in town for the Labor Day weekend and met a friend here for a couple of glasses of wine. It has a very local and friendly atmosphere with a large back lawn with picnic tables to sit outside and relax. The staff were very attentive and knowledgeable. I had 2 red wines that were both delicate and smooth. They also have a few trinkets for purchase. I found the perfect 50th birthday gift for a close friend. We had a great time visiting and look forward to stopping off again when we're back in town. read more

Newsom has a really nice venue with outdoor picnic tables, corn hole boards, and a stage for live music. The area is shaded by beautiful oak trees. They provide ice and buckets to keep a nice bottle of white chilled. We tried their Pinot Grigio along with a bottle of the 2017 Texas High Plains Cab Franc. The cab was very nice. I am not a fan of the Pinot which is a Driftwood winery wine. I don't know the relationship between Newsom and Driftwood. We had 6 in our party and a good time was had by all. This is a lazy day winery. It's not a hustle bustle over commercialized winery. They do a great job providing a relaxing and enjoyable environment on a Saturday afternoon. Live music and a food truck serving up bbq is right there on the grounds. Family friendly. You can bring your own snacks. Tastings are $15 pp and I believe it includes a souvenir wine glass. read more

First of all. If you like red wine: GO HERE. They only make a few whites and a few dessert wines which is perfect for us. My husband and I went in and told Chris that we liked red dry wine and he knew exactly what to give us. We did a tasting and he was very knowledgeable, listened to what we liked and gave us wine we liked. Everyone that was there was so friendly, there is an inside tasting room and a great outside courtyard to sit and hang out and drink. We liked it so much that after doing some wine tasting in another place in Fredericksburg we came back here to redeem the experience. This time we had Christy and she gave us what we didn't try so we knew what we liked. We ended up buying a few bottles and definitely want to become a wine member! The wine is fruit forward so you can actually taste the wine. It was fantastic. read more

BEWARE if you think your experience at Newsom Vineyards will be enjoyable or even familiar as compared to any other "tasting room" you've been to. I stopped by for a glass of wine, and the guy behind the counter asked me what kind of wine I usually enjoy. I told him I like Cabernet, and he said, "We have many varieties, but our own Cab is exceptional!" He proceeded to pour a small "tasting amount" into a glass....maybe one sip more than I was expecting... and then pushed it towards me. I tasted it, and found it to be good, and I said, "It's good... I'd like a glass of this." He said: "You just bought a glass of this!" And, at quite a high price, I might add ! In *any* other vineyard, they are happy to have you sample their own wines, of which they are proud, instead of pouring a tasting amount into a glass and charging you for it. This is the newest tasting room in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Located in a refurbished 1910 historic home, it's on the main drag driving through tiny Comfort, Texas. The Newsome family planted the first wine grapes in Texas, over in the High Plains area. They have sold their grapes to numerous wineries over the years, most notably to friends at Bending Branch. Congrats to Nolan for venturing out. The tasting room is warm and inviting, rich in rustic wood. Tasting fee of $5 is refunded with purchase of wine. There are currently four wines to taste, of which his Orange Muscat is the most unique and certainly the best. At $20 for a half-bottle, it's priced on par with similar whites from other Hill Country vintners. It has a delicious nose and taste of tangerines balanced with wonderful crispness and a delightedly light feel. Nice lingering finish. NOTE: This is a dry muscat, not a nasty sweet "moscato". The remaining three wines are a Pinot Grigio, Merlot, and Tempranillo-Cabernet Sauvignon blend. The latter stands out as smooth and elegant. Love this place. Learned a lot about Texas wine and wine production here. We are usually red wine drinkers, and there are plenty to choose from, and quality is exceptional. We're not big on white wine but we were convinced to try the orange muscat--- and boy was that good. I would definitely try it if you're out there...the patio had some seating but the area in the middle of the square provided the perfect shady place to enjoy your wine. We were excited to try Newsome since so many of the local wineries use their grapes. Unfortunately, the day we came in it was crowded with no opportunity for distancing. Seemed as if more people were drinking beer than wine...maybe some kind of event that day? Beer is great, but it is not what we were there for. .. Maybe it was just people from the BBQ place. Unfortunately, for us....its equally about the experience and the wine. I think we just prefer open scenic wineries to the crowded back yard. read more

We discovered Newsom Vineyards Tasting room and Comfort Backyard this summer as a place to get away from the big city and its silly rules during the Pandemic. Have returned many times and have also joined their wine club. We really enjoy Visiting with Nolan Newsom and appreciate that he takes time to socialize with those who stop in. His prices are very reasonable and it is always nice to grab a bottle and sit out back on the weekend afternoons and listen to live music in the backyard. Their is usually a food truck there on the weekend with BBQ (K-Bubz) and in the past Gyros (Firehouse Fare) which we hope returns in the near future. After your done in the backyard, stroll the main drag on High Street located a block to the south. Beautiful historic buildings in the area. read more

Just about every serious Texas wine drinker is probably familiar with Newsom Vineyards. Established in 1986, the vineyard has over 100 acres of vines in the Texas High Plains, one of the premier grape growing regions. There are many wineries that source their grapes there and every time you see "Newsom Vineyards" on a label as the source of the grapes, the expectations will typically rise. Neal and Janice Newsom's son, Nolan, has taken on the venture of opening a tasting room in Comfort along with the help of his wife, Mei. They just opened this November. The house they have renovated for the tasting room used to be the tasting room of the former Comfort Cellars, however they have preserved this piece of history by retaining that old wineries sign inside the tasting room just above the entrance. Much of the renovation inside the tasting room involved repurposing the walls and floors back to their original wood which really looks terrific for a home originally built over 100 years ago. At the tasting bar, there are currently four wines available. Since the Newsoms have a long established working relationship with many different wineries, they have worked with different winemakers to help make their initial wine releases. This helps exemplify their fruit and the character of each winemaker's techniques. Driftwood, Bending Branch, Calais Winery, Lewis Wines, Llano Estacado, Pedernales Cellars, and Flat Creek Estate are all lending their wine making skills for the initial wine releases. The first wine to taste is a dry Orange Muscat (2015). The citrus and honeysuckle notes might throw you off at first and make you expect a sweet wine, but it actually comes across has quite smooth and refreshing as it is dry. The 2015 Pinot Grigio is herbal with a tad bit of acidity. For the reds, the 2014 LaVerne's Merlot, has fruit sourced from some of the oldest Merlot vines on the vineyard lot (1993). The garnet colored wine has notes of plums, berries, and pepper. Letting this bottle sit for another year or two will only improve its character. The other red is Inception and is a Tempranillo (58%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (42%) blend and is a good example of well-balanced high plains wine. These are all some great wines to help get this new winery off to a wonderful launch. There are at least five more wines coming out early next year and yet more on the horizon. For the near future, you can expect a 2015 Albarino, 2015 Sangiovese, 2015 Syrah, 2015 Malbec, and 2015 Cabernet Sauvginon. This is a great addition to Comfort and a good boost to the downtown shops and restaurants. You'll have a good time tasting and chatting with Nolan and Mei who are very eager to showcase and share their latest wines and talk about their history and vision for their new winery. There is also a back porch where you can sit, relax, and sip down a bottle of Orange Muscat on those warm winter days in Texas. Come visit them and see why Comfort is worth the trip. Cheers! read more
