Thumbs down for Newsom Vineyards in Comfort, TX

BEWARE if you think your experience at Newsom Vineyards will be enjoyable or even familiar as compared to any other "tasting room" you've been to. I stopped by for a glass of wine, and the guy behind the counter asked me what kind of wine I usually enjoy. I told him I like Cabernet, and he said, "We have many varieties, but our own Cab is exceptional!" He proceeded to pour a small "tasting amount" into a glass....maybe one sip more than I was expecting... and then pushed it towards me. I tasted it, and found it to be good, and I said, "It's good... I'd like a glass of this." He said: "You just bought a glass of this!" And, at quite a high price, I might add ! In *any* other vineyard, they are happy to have you sample their own wines, of which they are proud, instead of pouring a tasting amount into a glass and charging you for it. I was shocked and extremely disappointed in the treatment I received at Newsom Vineyards in Comfort, TX.

This is the newest tasting room in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Located in a refurbished 1910 historic home, it's on the main drag driving through tiny Comfort, Texas. The Newsome family planted the first wine grapes in Texas, over in the High Plains area. They have sold their grapes to numerous wineries over the years, most notably to friends at Bending Branch. Congrats to Nolan for venturing out. The tasting room is warm and inviting, rich in rustic wood. Tasting fee of $5 is refunded with purchase of wine. There are currently four wines to taste, of which his Orange Muscat is the most unique and certainly the best. At $20 for a half-bottle, it's priced on par with similar whites from other Hill Country vintners. It has a delicious nose and taste of tangerines balanced with wonderful crispness and a delightedly light feel. Nice lingering finish. NOTE: This is a dry muscat, not a nasty sweet "moscato". The remaining three wines are a Pinot Grigio, Merlot, and Tempranillo-Cabernet Sauvignon blend. The latter stands out as smooth and elegant. We enjoyed our visit and will certainly return for more!

Bending Branch produces some top-notch wines and Bourbon! The winery is beautiful with multiple rooms, from high tops to comfy chairs. There is also a large patio that has some shade. They have a great family story (check out their website) and a unique way to produce bold wines. Being Kentucky natives, their bourbons are full-bodied and range from great for an old-fashioned to smooth as silk, straight up delicious. We enjoyed our red flight tasting, and yes, their Tannat is superb. Both their 2022 and 2021 Estate were complex, not overly fruity and rich. Their Tempranillo is beautifully balanced with some cherry notes and a fine leathery finish. I did sample their high-rye bourbon and was impressed with its smoothness. So impressed that a bottle now sits in my bourbon cabinet at home. This bourbon is easily sipped straight up or with a single ice cube. Bonus: If you do visit Bending Branch, take a short drive to downtown Comfort. There are some cool stores, and you have to check out the historic Giles Hotel. You can access their beautiful courtyard, and we were told by multiple folks that their breakfast is awesome. We are planning a return trip to check out the other wineries in the area and stay here.

Texas Hill Country Wine Passport: #4 Tasting: Complimentary…read morefor the entire line, about 6 wines. Saltine crackers provided, dump (you might need it), no indoor plumbing=no water. Tasting Staff: friendly and informal, but a bit rushed, even though we were the only ones there. Definitely had a memorized schpiel for each wine. Facilities: Nice bar, located in town off the main drag. Wine Dogs: none We interrupted the tasting woman's morning plant watering and I think she was a little miffed about it. But, after a short wait we began our tasting. The wines were not great, but some were OK and the prices were low. We tasted about 6 wines and purchased the Orange Chardonnay. The cork was a little smashed but when we asked for another bottle the woman was very adamant about there being nothing wrong with it. The raisin wine was interesting, but the jalapeno wine takes the cake for the most interesting wine I've ever tried. Its not something for sipping, because its super-hot, but I suppose you could cook with it. Sip lightly! They were very proud of it, but I don't know if they should be.

And there was a whole bunch of jalapeno plants growing lined up on the walkway, more about them later. There was no one behind the tasting counter when we walked in, but she came up from a back room quickly after we shut the door. She wasn't the most friendly, especially considering the two wineries we visited earlier. We tasted all that they had, they were sold out of the orange chard. They had a crisp white that was good, but most of the rest were too sweet for me. I dumped quite a few out. Now for the jalapenos, the jalapeno wine was crazy! So very hot, one little sip and your mouth is burning. She added a little clamato and voila! A perfect spicy bloody mary! It was excellent! I liked it so much we bought three bottles. Great Vineyard, Frustrating Food Experience…read more This was our first visit to Singing Waters Vineyard, and the property itself is absolutely darling. The setting is beautiful, the staff at the vineyard were friendly and welcoming, and the wine was tasty. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and time with friends. However, the food truck experience was a big letdown and honestly the main reason we're hesitant to return. I paid $12 for a hot dog combo (pictured)--just a single hot dog and a small bag of chips. That price felt excessive for what we received. The kids' burger was $8 and was tiny...about the size of a quarter dollar with melted cheese and chips. The value just wasn't there. What made things worse was the service. Our friends ordered the exact same food right before us and received theirs much earlier. We waited about 40 minutes longer for the same order. It was frustrating, and it did make us wonder if my earlier comment about the hot dog price being extreme played a role. The kids were all still hungry. The vineyard itself is lovely and worth visiting, but I strongly recommend reconsidering the food truck setup...either pricing, portions, or vendor choice. The food experience didn't match the quality of the venue, and it definitely affected our overall impression.
