I can't believe I have lived in this area for so many years and never went to the Newtown Theater. It's a pretty cool space with some unique events tucked away on State Street. They do have a bar area and a popcorn stand. I went for their 90 minute cat video event. During the preshow I learned that this is the oldest theater is America! How crazy is that! They have some fantastic shows coming up including many tribute bands as well as movie showings. I'm really hoping to get tickets see Joan Osborne singing the songs of Bob Dylan. We came all the way from New Jersey, and visiting Newtown Theatre was truly a pleasure from start to finish. Not only did we get to enjoy a night out in this charming town, but we also had the chance to be part of a place filled with history and character. Walking into the theatre felt like stepping back in time in the best way--warm, classic, and full of heart. The ambience was absolutely perfect. The cozy, intimate setting made the entire experience feel personal and inviting. From the moment we walked in, the energy was welcoming. The fresh-popped popcorn added that nostalgic movie-night touch, and the bartenders and staff members were incredibly friendly, helpful, and genuinely happy to be there. Their hospitality made the night even better. We came to see The Ultimate Doors, and what a show! The sound, the vibe, and the atmosphere all came together to create a memorable night. It's rare to find a venue that feels both historic and alive, but Newtown Theatre gets it right. We would absolutely love to visit again. If you're thinking about catching a show here--do it. To think the oldest standing and still running movie theater in the USA was just a few blocks from my old High School the whole time I attended there over twenty years ago. I came to the Newtown Theater on Friday night for a comedian, Tom Green, and the show was magnificent including the opening acts. Price of the show came with a free drink coupon you can use on wine, beer, or a soft drink as a bonus. As far as food goes you can have freshly popped popcorn (extremely fresh and not salty at all), or candy for sale. The theater is very small and has mezzanine seating available. There is a decent amount of street parking so you do not have to pay for lot parking if you snag a spot near the theater. Newtown is a fairly rich and pleasant area to shop and dine. If you take notice of any acts or plays you want to see at the Newtown Theater I highly suggest you check it out. Generally love the performances at the Newtown Theatre but can't say the same for tonight's offering. The concert was the first in the jazz series and as far as good jazz this did not hit the mark. 70's music that supposedly was jazzed up, yet it didn't meet the mark. Wish I could say something positive about tonight's performance but I can't. Hence I'm not going to give the bands name as perhaps when they play real jazz there is a chance that they "perform really well" On the other hand, the Newtown Theatre once again confirms that we ate very fortunate to have such a wonderful venue in our local area. Invited to a musical performance as a thank you for our support of various charitable endeavors. Jim Worthington was our host. Performer was Adam Fisher an opera singer who also performed other tunes. I loved the rendition of various Les Miserables songs and a few Christmas favorites. He was accompanied by a very young up-and comer female who demonstrated tremendous range. The theatre is a wonderful space for an intimate event. There were servers walking around with small bites and a full bar at the back of the theatre. The seating was comfortable more roomy than at high end places in PHL or NY. The sound was excellent. I have tried repeatedly to buy tickets online but the website process just keeps asking me for "members" information and I am not a member, so can't get past this. Called the office and message says it could be 2-3 days before a call is returned, so I tried the email and, again, 2-3 days for an answer. How do I give no stars We prepurchased tickets to an evening, adults showing of ELF It was a cold, raining, nasty Friday 12/13 evening. We, as well as others, thought the movie started at 8:00pm Imagine our surprise to arrive at 7:30, to learn the doors would open at 8:00pm and someone from the theater had come to door, told those already waiting that they needed to stand outside, in the horrible weather, until 8:00!!! How RUDE! With no consideration for their customers We left. There is no way we are standing outside until 8:00 We can easily find a theater who gives consideration to their patrons. It has been years since we last stepped into this quaint, charming local theater. And we didn't realize it is the oldest running theater in the Country and how lucky we have it right here in Newtown! We were a party of 10 for the Comedy night. It was a full theater of mostly locals and seemed to be an older crowd. It was a pleasure to have this type of entertainment so close to home. 4 Comedians...the 4th was the headliner. Each Comedian had quite a few hearty laughs with a captive audience. Not sure there is a bad seat, it was easy to see and hear. It was a perfect local night and our group loved it. Wine, beer soda and pop corn sold in the beginning. I like that the theater offers a variety of shows, movies and entertainment...we will be regulars. In fact, we can't wait to go back! read more

Nice local theater. Easy street parking. Unfortunately the comedy show started out very good with the opening comedian but when the headliner Dave Laundau came out and started turning on his political views, it started going off the relaxing entertainment we came out to enjoy. He tried to tell everybody to lighten up. He was off on how to provide that. We watched a utube video that was linked from the theater website, which didn't indicate the way his show had turned. The oldest movie theater in the USA, and a registered historic landmark and non-profit, the Newtown Theatre is a community treasure, playing current movies in an environment that brings you to the 1950's. The physical layout is as old as this suggests, with a tiny ticket booth and refreshment area that would fit in your closet. Climb the narrow stairs to the balcony, and feel what it was like when your grandparents and great grandparents went on dates, and could only be alone in the dark with a chaperone between them. I went back here recently after many years. This was an occasional movie spot for my friends and I growing up if we didn't feel like driving out to Neshaminy. My sister and I wanted to catch a movie and Newtown Theater's time worked for us. My mom reminded us that it had been renovated semi-recently so we decided to give it a shot. From the looks of it, I guess the renovation was just of the screen. The seats and the rest of the theater are run-down. I totally understand that this is a historic landmark, but why is the movie ticket and popcorn, etc. the same price as it is at a major movie theater chain? That's the only thing that really annoyed me because if it's going to be this charming local theater without all the amenities the price should reflect that. read more

Been taking my kids here during the summer for their free kids movie days. This was such a treat for everyone, a terrific idea. Unfortunately these free kid movie days are being increasingly hijacked by multiple schools/day camps with special needs kids. The schools take up several rows of seats each and there's a lot of distraction with frequent outbursts etc...it's fine for the adults in attendance but children end up watching the other kids act out instead of the movie. Maybe the theatre could designate a specific day for schools? Just something some may want to consider before making the journey here. Also, the audio has been lacking. read more

A very cool and historic theater. Charming and feels like you have been transported back in time. If you are looking for reclining seats with someone massaging your feet, this is not a place for you. It is a very old theater and it is great that it is being kept as original as possible. The snack bar is small, OMG!, so there's not a thousand varieties of garbage to choose from. This theater is very well kept and well run. Also, you will pay full price for tickets because the movie studios charge the same to run their movies whether its being shown at the 50-plex or a local theater. I came here today for the first time since 1999 and sincerely appreciated the free movie Wednesday event! That is such a kind thing to provide. Everything about this theatre is awesome except the bathroom. It is so small I could barely help my young daughter clean herself up. Also the toilet kept clogging and the walls had lots of damage... the bathroom was just generally downtrodden. There were no paper towels. I suggest a basic renovation to current standards of the restrooms. The rest was nothing but a great experience. Thank you!! read more

Took my 3 year old to watch a 2 man play, the Snow Queen. She loved it. The theater is old, but charming. I love the history and the variety of programs they offer. Perfect Saturday afternoon local activity for our little one. read more
