I cannot even begin to tell you how great Newt's Tailoring and Alterations is! I come from a family of seamstresses and can do some minor sowing, however for intricate alterations, really needed someone in town. Does this make my butt look big? I'm Asian. So when it comes to clothes, that pretty much means nothing fits right. Pants are always too long. Shirts are too baggy. Thus, I have three options: (1) look like I don't know how to dress myself; (2) get everything custom made or; (3) get off the rack items tailored. Having done all three, I far prefer option #1. It's cheap, easy, doesn't require some random person getting intimate with me and I can wear anything I want. But, apparently, society frowns upon me strutting about in undergarments. Not that I would know... Anyway, I had the misfortune of being friends with a clothier who fit me with great custom shirts and suits. Unfortunately, this route was costly and my budget became allergic to my tastes, which brought me to Newt. Now, whenever I buy any new clothes, I visit Newt for an adjustment. It costs $32 per dress shirt to shorten the sleeves and taper the sides. Sounds pricey, but there is actually a lot of material that gets cut and she sews it back up using the same stitching...other places don't or charge a lot more for that. For pants, I pay $10 to hem the inseam, but I don't remember how much to take in the waist. The costs really add up, but its still far cheaper than having custom clothes made and infinitely better than looking like the slob I normally am. First I brought in a couple of dresses that needed to be taken in a little. Newt and company are friendly and polite and very professional. I appreciate having a nice private dressing room to change as well. Some places you get a closet in the lobby! They had everything done in two weeks and my dresses fit perfectly! They passed the test. Next, I brought in my vintage wedding gown that also needed the shoulders taken in, bra strap holders added and a few minor repairs. Again, wonderful service and my dress looked smashing at the wedding. The DH says he wants to bring in some suits for tailoring so we will see how they do with men's clothing, but based on previous experience and reviews I feel confident he will look great! read more

I ordered a bridesmaid dress online and it didn't fit. I took it to Newts and they said that I would have to buy my own fabric to have a corset back added. That option didn't work for me, so they took my measurements for free so I could order a different dress. So nice! I used their measurements to order a custom sized dress but it didn't fit quite right... I'm not sure if it was their measurements or the dress company. Regardless, I took my new dress to them and they were able to do alterations in less than 24 hours so I could have the dress in time! The dress ended up perfect and I got tons of compliments. Their price was also incredibly reasonable, especially for a rush order like that. read more

This place is awesome. I recently took in seven pairs of dress pants and a pair of jeans that needed to retain the original hem. The gentleman who helped measure me was very professional and friendly. Their prices are very fair, and you get the sense that they really appreciate your business. I actually enjoyed talking with Newt (who is a woman... didn't expect that, based on the name!) and the man who helped me. My fiancé is in medical school and will need lots of tailoring done soon to all his dress shirts (his neck is like a damn tree trunk). We will DEFINITELY be taking them to Newt's!! read more

Hi All, I started going to Newt's tailoring about 6 months ago. I like to have my clothes fit me perfectly and so almost everything I buy is tailored for me (from coats to pants to dresses). Newt (who does the tailoring) is an incredible tailor. I've taken in about 15 things now and have been delighted with each item... Newt has a great eye for detail and magical tailoring skills ;))) Also, in addition to the expert tailoring that is done here, everything is ready on time. Prices are reasonable as well. I highly recommend this tailor. They also carry men's suits. So if your guy needs a little sprucing up I'd definitely check out their large selection of beautiful suites!!! read more

Well I would like to start out but saying that I found this place on yelp and gave them a call and came in a few days later! When I arrived I was greeted by Charlie and he's a great guy and knows his business! His wife newt was there to back him up if he needed lol! They fitted me for my suit and paid cash and left! They called me a couple weeks later to see how my suit fit after the alterations so I went in and my suit fit great! But here's the kicker!!!!! When I arrived to pick up the suit I noticed a ziplock bag attached to the suit bag with a $20 bill in it and I asked what it was for and Charlie informed me that I had over paid him by $20 when I came in originally! Now for me honesty is everything! I am a businessman and have been in business for quite some time and those are the type of people who will do well in business! Came to pick my items up on the day they were supposed to be done and they weren't. Turns out they forgot about them....for 11 days. They then offered to hurriedly do them all in 1 hour. These people screwed up our order so badly. We needed some slacks hemmed and we went the extra step and brought in a picture of exactly how the hem was to look and a measurement to use. No brainier right? WRONG! They reversed the order and basically ruined these $160 slacks. How does this happen? Is there such a thing as too much information or too much attention to detail? What language do I need to speak if pictures cannot explain? read more

One of my favorite hoodies had a pocket that needed to be sewed up, so I took it to them. They did a great job fixing it. The downside is, that it took them a week. It looks like they stay busy. But, I didn't need it back right away. I would definitely use them again, if I needed something altered. read more

I had two pairs of pants that needed hemming and I needed to catch a flight at 3. It was really short notice when my bf dropped them off first thing in the morning, but the owner (i think) was really nice to take on the job at no additional cost! (Thank you!) I've been losing weight for the past two years, so I've been in need of exceptional tailoring so I can avoid buying new clothes. I've taken in over 10 pairs of pants and at least three suits to Newt's. Everything has been done professionally and well. Charlie is the always well-dressed gentleman at the front and he's alway polite and helpful. Newt is the master tailor who does the work in the back. Even when I ask for something to be done, Charlie and Newt sometimes recommend lesser cost options that are just as good (such as moving a button which they did for no extra charge, versus letting out a suit jacket which is $25) and I really appreciate that. Now when I but a new suit some where, I don't even bother with the "in-house" alterations, I just take it to Newt's and they do everything up right. Highly, highly recommended. read more

I've used Newt's services a total of 3 times. The quality is great, however, the customer service is extremely poor. Each time I took my daughter's Girl Scout vest in to have numerous patches sewn on. Two out of the three times Newt's lost patches. Both times I had to replace the missing patches. The first time it happened Newt's apologized and the manager swore that it wouldn't happen again. Giving them a second chance, I went back and it happened again! All three times I took photos so that I could keep track of what patches were to be sewn on her vest. The second time they lost a patch not only did they lie to me, a returning customer, but the manager called me a liar! I had photo proof of the patches and he still denied the fact that they lost my daughter's patch. So, if you want a quality sewing job, Newt's does nice work but you won't be guaranteed to get it back and then when you complain about the poor service, the manager and head seamstress will call you names. I would be very careful about using Newt's alterations services. Needless to say, I won't be returning! read more

Sadly I have to write this review .. After 4 trips and $48 later for one skirt I left with it still not correct ... I was told when I dropped my garment off that all issues could be taken care of .. To my surprise I revived a skirt back with a that hem that did not last all but two hours! The employees at this establishment are super friendly they understand what needs to be done to fix a garment yet the work is not adequate. Omg this place is amazing I went in the other morning to see if they could sew on my sons little league patch. I was pretty pressed for time being that he had opening day at 12 and it was 10 in the morning, I had went to another place before here and it was close but to the st patty day parade on water street. So anyways they were really busy and I could tell so the nice guy in there asked me when I needed it by I'm like I need it today by 12(knowing I was asking for a lot) so he asked the seamstress if she could fit me in any kind of way. Well guess what they did she did it right then and there for me I was so happy and I really appreciate them for that they were so nice about it and I had no problems if I was a man I woulda bought a suit just that! Best alterations shop - I've ever done business with. Charlie and wife, Newt, are top notch. Very customer oriented; alterations done perfectly each time; very fair pricing policy; Good people. Store a little difficult to first locate - on east side of the 215 on Gibson, but excellent parking out front, and very little traffic in the area. Great pizza place about 3 doors down. Very pleased I found Newt's shop and I go there often to bring clothes for alterations. read more

I've never had to get alternations for a dress before so I'm not sure price wise where this place falls. I needed to remove at least 4 inches off my one strap layered bridesmaids dress. I've heard disaster stories before so I was really concerned and on top of needing to remove so much I was concerned of how it would turned out. Preparing that it may take a while I went to them about 3 1/2 weeks before I had to fly out for the wedding. I asked if 2 weeks would be enough time and when I come back if any additional alternations needed would a week be enough time? The gentleman said yes that will work. I tried on the dress one of the gals pinned me up and then I took it off. The gentleman told me it would be $50 bucks. I said no problem. I came back 2 weeks later the dress was ready, I tried it on and it was still a little loose at the chest area so they asked if I can come back tomorrow to pick it up but I was out of town and said can I stop in on Monday? No problem. I came back on Monday the issue was fixed! I paid the $50 and left a happy customer and knowing I didn't need to worry about my dress. thank you thank you! I came in with my suit I haven't worn since my senior year in high school which was very baggy on me in all ways possible. The salesman and tailor were very nice and kind people.
