The Bespoke Clothier

The Bespoke Clothier completely changed how I think about fit. If you have a hard-to-fit body type,…read moreyou know how disappointing even "altered" clothes can be. I brought Gabriel a designer suit that still didn't feel right after store alterations. He was pretty honest--said the best it could become was a 7/10--and then went to work. He adjusted the shoulders, chest, sleeves, lapels, which required him to move every single button. It was literally a completely different suit. And for the first time, it actually fit the way it should. Since then, I've gone back for five custom suits, multiple shirts, and my favorite, an overcoat (which I'd avoided for years because of off-the-rack fit issues). Every item has come out perfectly tailored. If fit has always been a compromise for you, it's worth seeing what Gabriel can do. Adding some photos, but I'm not a fashion/textiles photographer. It's harder than it looks.

I've been looking for a place to get a proper suit made for a while. I consider myself a difficult…read morefit -- my chest measurement is at least 10 inches more than my waist. My posture is very upright and that just makes the chest issue even more difficult. There aren't many places in the US outside of New York that do real bespoke -- patterns cut from scratch. I'm glad I found Gabriel. He has a great understanding of classic men's style and proportions. The suit he made for me is very comfortable and continues to get better as the canvas takes the shape of my body. I keep looking for areas to make micro improvements for my next project with him. But to be honest, the fit is so good I'm not sure there's much to change other than experimenting with other styles, like a double breasted. I plan on commissioning something from him every year as long as I stay in Washington. The super tight, short jacket with the bum exposed, with skinny lapels was trending for a while on off the rack clothing. Even some made to measure places make suits like this. If you are looking for a suit to wear for the next 10 years, I encourage you to give Gabriel a try and have him make something timeless for you.

I have been contemplating buying a sewing machine, as my husband said, for 20 years. I purchased a…read moreBernina when I was 16 and have had it about 30+ years. Mine is still working, but has zero bells and whistles. Something clicked in my brain on Friday and I walked into Joann's ready, seeking a sewing machine. I sat down with Diane and she walked me through 3 sewing machines. I was blown away by a) how far sewing machines have come since I purchased my last one 30 years ago. We played with lots of fabric scraps and trying different stitches. We were uninterrupted, but when people did come up, she took a few moments to either point them in the right direction, or ask them to come back in a bit. I was ready for a giant leap forward and I'm super excited by what my new machine can do. I appreciated all of Diane's help.

I live 45 minutes from the nearest sewing store, so I tried to make sure it would be worth my while…read morebefore going. An email was provided, so I sent in my question early. I didn't get a response, so I decided to head up anyway to see if I could get some help. I needed to try a cable from the store to see if my Viking serger works, before I spend the money on a new cable. I hoped it would work, then I planned to buy a cable and go home. It's a Viking serger, so I went to the Viking dealer. The sewing section is in the back of Jo-Ann fabric and crafts. The employee there spoke to me as though I was ruining her day by being there. I WOULDN'T have been there if she had bothered to send an email reply! She told me she was busy, selling to a customer it appears, and had no intention of addressing my problem for a very, very long time. She emphasized that it would be a VERY long wait, as though she was telling me to leave. Then turned her back on me and did not deal with me again except for one isolated dirty look. I realize that a cable is under a $100, and a sewing machine will get her much more commission. I realize she was already willing to sell machines for as many hours as it takes, when someone asked her for 10 minutes of her time. I didn't even expect her to help me herself. But I DO expect her to get someone else who can simply look up a part in a catalog, and to not be such an agitated, confrontational jerk. She was unreasonably hostile and rude. I left after 20 minutes of waiting. I went to two other sewing machine stores, neither whom specialize in Vikings. Neither had my cable because they sell mostly other machines, both suggested I try the crappy Viking store, but BOTH took the time to root through their entire inventory and offer to order the part for me. They were busy and I waited for them too, but they were kind and helpful instead of abrasive and snappy. Viking AND Jo-Ann are now not at all my favorite place to go for all things sewing. I have a bad taste in my mouth.

Mandy literally worked miracles for me the week before my wedding and I cannot recommend her enough…read moreI ordered a dress from an Etsy shop online (not Mandy) because I wanted something colorful and non traditional. I knew it was risky and the timeframe was really short and long story short it ended up being a bad choice - the dress I ordered was awful! With only one week before my wedding I rushed to Davids Bridal to try to find a dress off the rack. Obviously though, going to a bridal shop, non-traditional dresses are hard to come by and the best I could find was a cute ivory tea length, A-line dress. I really wanted something colorful and floral still so I found some floral tulle at JoAnne's and then searched for a local seamstress to see if anyone local could figure out something to do with my boring ivory dress, and in just a matter of days! Oh and the shoulders needed to be taken in as well!! Mandy was quick to respond, invited me to her home-based shop and said she could do it and would have it done by the next day!! It was even better than I expected! Like a whole new dress and fit like a glove!! I felt absolutely beautiful and received countless compliments! I highly recommend Mandy! Not only an excellent designer and seamstress, but also extremely kind and great to work with! Thank you Mandy for saving the day and making me feel so beautiful on my special day!!!!
