A great little used bookstore! And by far the closest one! I thought I died and went to book heaven... I know this place isn't as large as the Iliad in NoHo which my sister and her boyfriend used to rave about... but this place is so much closer and still has a great selection of books. When I go into a used bookstore... something comes over me... I can't explain it! I had a teacher who would buy bag of books, set them up in their classroom, and then let me go "shopping"... I would come home with bags of books. I also remember as a kid going with my mom to the used book sales at the library and walking home with bags and bags and bags of books. I don't know. Maybe it's a nostalgic thing... but I love them. There's nothing like used books. New books are so... boring... one dimensional... I don't know... so new?! On the other hand, used books, well they just have a sort of history. They're broken in. Plus I relish the scent of them too. I much prefer them to new books. Plus, they're much more affordable... which is a nice side bonus. Plus, I just can't read on a Kindle or a computer. I just can't. I need to feel the pages of the book between my fingers as I flip the page. There is just some sort of almost obscene gratification from that. Who knows. I just can't understand reading a novel on a device. Nope. Never gonna happen. Anyway, the owner is very friendly and helpful. I didn't feel pressured or rushed... while I perused the book aisles... and there were tons everywhere. All the books are neatly arranged by genre in these wooden library looking bookcases... alphabetically by authors last name. Sadly, I couldn't find the Kafka book I was looking for... but I'll have to check back another time. Sure, you can go to Amazon and buy the exact book you are looking for... but there's something magical about actually looking through the little paperbacks on the shelves. I always end up picking up and finding more things that I never would online or finding hidden gems. Yay! I'll definitely be back... when I'm done with my two new books! :) read more

The book store owner Boyd is extremely helpful. Parking is in the back of the store off of Sherman Way, so do not park on the street for metered parking. A wide selection of books ranging from art, religion, and classic literature is available. There is one thing you need to know about books and a good book store owner: books are priced according to their rarity. For example, you may find a copy of Pride and Prejudice that is twenty dollars because it is not a mass-produced copy, while finding the mass production copy for five dollars. You must at least stop by this store if you love books. Even Amazon.com cannot match the prices from private sellers with their shipping rates. Plus, if you are kind and courteous, I am sure Boyd would work with you on some book deals. While you are in the area, make sure to stop by the thrift shop The Rummage Rat just down the street for some antique finds like German beer mugs, tea sets, clothing, lamps, and decor. Jumbled little used bookshop that doesn't have everything you are looking for, but some goodies if you feel like digging. This is a fairly new storefront-there are still books in boxes lining every space that doesn't have a bookshelf already occupying it, most books still lack price stickers, and it takes some effort just to find the category you might want to browse in the cramped space. Thankfully though, the owner here is pretty friendly and helpful about navigating the space and looking up prices. Their art and social science sections, normally my favorite to browse in used book stores, are pretty lacking but if you like fiction or history you could do worse. They had a few copies of David Mamet's play "Glengarry Glenn Ross," one of which I would have scooped up at bargain price if I hadn't placed myself on a painful book buying ban until I read the 20 or so ones in my room with as-yet unbroken spines... With parking in the back and limited other nearby options, Next Chapter is worth a look if you're looking for some cheap reading material outside the norm. read more

It's super hard to find used bookstores nowadays, and I think Next Chapter really takes the cake, as far as the West Valley goes! I came in here to look for a few books off of a required reading list for school, and surprisingly, the owner actually knew what he had. Popped in for the first time the other day and they had just what I was looking for - a book on the history of/how to make bread. Boyd the owner was quite nice and helpful; he's fighting the good fight for those of us who'd rather feel the page at our fingertips as opposed to a screen. Next Chapter Books is a decent sized used book store with a nice selection of used book. The store is well organized. The prices are very fair. The owner is very helpful and friendly. I definitely plan to go back as they get new books in on a weekly basis. We need to support our local independent book sellers. This is definitely one of the better ones in the valley! A small used book store with an excellent selection. Very well organized and clean (no cats) with a friendly helpful owner. I go here first for the books my kids need for middle and high school. I have also found books I like in science fiction, fantasy, history, science and math. The history section is particularly good. Between Next Chapter and the IIiad in NoHo (my favorite, but far away), I think I will never set foot in a new book store again. It is not just the pricing, but I find that used book stores have a better selection of quality books. I've been coming here for years and although my literary taste is eclectic, I can almost always find what I'm looking for (or at least other works from the authors I like). The owner Boyd is always down for good conversation, and also will offer to add library-style dust jackets to hardcover books which is definitely a plus. I live about 20 mins away from this bookstore. I thought it looked nice so I went to check it out. At first it didn't seem like much but as I walked in I was kindly greeted. The store is amazing! Well stocked, well organized, well lighted. The owner is very helpful and knowledgeable. I was able to find several of the books I was looking for and got them all at very fair and reasonable prices. If i had bought them from borders or another book store I would of paid so much more. I just told the owner what type of books i was interested in and he showed me to the section and also pointed out books that I might like there were in other areas of the store. I went to Brand, Iliad, and all my other favorite bookstores in search of one specific book, none had it so I figured I'd try something new. Lo and behold, Next Chapter had it and so much more. This is easily your best book-buying option on this side of the valley, just the perfect used bookstore. Very intuitively organized without seeming sterile, and the owner is nice and helpful without being awkward or desperate. I absolutely love this place. Boyd, the owner, has a great selection and what always impresses me is what a great handle he has on what is in stock. When I was there doing Christmas shopping this last season I threw some suuuuper random subjects at him and he's always quick to either say "Yeah, I've got a couple of good ones in that genre" or "I don't think so but if I did they'd be right over here". I'm the type of person that goes out of my way to try and support local businesses no matter what but what's really awesome about next chapter is that I don't feel like I'm going out of my way to support them, I feel like I'm lucky that I get to support them.
