This bookstore is absolutely adorable! It has a great selection of books across a wide variety of genres and series. They also have a small section with DVDs and CDs, which was such a fun dose of late-'90s and early-2000s nostalgia. I loved it. One of my favorite features was their "Surprise Reads" section. The books are wrapped so you can't see the cover, and each one has a short description of the story or theme instead. It encourages you to choose a book based on the synopsis rather than the cover, which I think is such a fun idea. I've discovered some fantastic books through "Surprise Reads," so I was excited to see they had a section dedicated to them. The staff were super friendly and helpful. They helped me look for a series (The Telesa or Covenant series) that I am trying to get. Unfortunately they didn't have the series but hopefully in the future. The location is great as it is at a mall close to coffee shops to grab you a book and head on for coffee or tea to read and enjoy. read more

Great atmosphere, cool staff, and really good book selection! Love their social media book recommendations as well - that's how they lure me into the store. I love their tote bag discount and stamp cards, and if you love books, you'll end up racking up a lot of stamp cards before being able to use them all They also host a lot of fun events like author signings, book bedazzling, and trivia nights. The store is located in the heart of The Village in Topanga and there's ample parking. If you want to read your haul immediately, you'll find a lot of seats just outside the store. I've always been saying what the village lacks are fun places to shop so that people have a reason to go there beyond just Costco and the various food locations. This store is exactly what I mean. I loved the open book in Northridge when it was on Tampa and still when it moved inside the mall. Was excited when this location opened. I am a sucker for old books and this place has ample with a really cool ambiance to it. Kinda like a nerdy library. I say that because they also have comics, collectibles and even have a section for banned books. As if you're buying something taboo. Staff is always friendly, place is organized so you know where to look, they always have some type of deal going on. So great value no matter what you buy. This is a very interesting bookstore. What I found were vintage books, memorabilia including vinyl records and cassette tapes, board games, collectibles, etc. I could have spent hours browsing in here. Items were reasonably priced. I found a book on yoga and my daughter found some manga books. Service could have been better. The sales staff were more engrossed chatting among themselves... I will Be back though. The price point of everything is so good, I'm able to let my daughter pick out more books than normal. They recently moved from upstairs at the village to the first level. I didn't realize it was at the topanga village until I passed by it after grabbing a bite to eat at a restaurant near by. I walked in and was greeted right away. It does feel a bit smaller compared to other locations but I did like how they had a wall full of new arrivals and the employees favorites to pick from. Every section is labeled, they even have records in the back room to the right over near the kids section. read more

If you're looking for something beyond Thrifting and just books. My daughter and I found "the open book" on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, to be more than just a bookstore. The buyer for this venue, has a keen eye for the obscure. The prices are surprisingly welcoming! The reason for my taking the time for this review, is the unique energy of passion from MaKayla. The entrepreneur of this amazing bookstore, did well, by bringing this delightful representative on board! Store was much larger than anticipated; amazing selection of classic literature, world history, ancient philosophy, literary analysis, and contemporary fiction. All books, to my knowledge and memory, were sorted alphabetically by author last name. Prices were shockingly reasonable! It became too easy to rack up the total price; six books for fifty dollars! Perhaps it is an issue alone to compare, but one would not be able to get as many books of this quality at similar prices in bookstores like Barnes & Noble. I am unsure if the total price was altered by the "buy one, get one half off" sale that was active the day I purchased from The Open Book. I approached two staff members to see if they had a specific book available; the book was not in stock, but both staff members were very easy to approach, friendly, and genuinely helpful! Very cool book store. It's hard coming across books nowadays since everything is available online and digital. I don't read much anymore but it's still really cool to check out. We were in the area and decided to drop by before heading out. This is right on the second floor in the middle of the village near the escalator and parking structure. A lot of the books are pretty torn up but still in good enough condition. They have a seating area if you want to just pick up a book and read. They have a rather large selection of comics if you're looking for that but the manga section is very tiny. I didn't pay attention to the prices since we were just there briefly. Store workers are friendly and very welcoming but other than that, they kind of just chatted and did their own thing which is fine. First time at this book store and it won't be the last as long as they stay in business. So many great books for such reasonable prices. They had new, used and vintage books as well as some special edition titles. In the back wall they have a whole wall of books for either $3 or $5 ... I sure grabbed a few to add to my collection. I was very fascinated with the special edition titles and collectors items. Would love to get one in the future if I see something that interests me. They also have a huge selection children's books. This bookstore is my new happy place! It is beautiful inside, has an incredible selection of books, and ... they are all cheap! Mostly below $10. Because they are second hand, but don't let that fool you. The books are in great condition. In the middle of this spacious good-feeling store is a selection of very comfy chairs and couches. Do homework, read, chat quietly, nap. The book sales people leave you alone to do your thing. Because the energy in here is so delightful and uplifting, I buy bags of books every time. It's like they put a spell on you ;) They also host book readings for authors like me, I am so excited! read more

I always adored Open Book. It was my happy place. I have spent thousands of dollars across multiple locations. But unfortunately, it has become all about the money. They have priced out regulars. The new location is harder to get to and not wheelchair accessible at all. I love records and cannot look at half of them, because it is too close to the wall for my chair to fit. I actually can't see many of the sections in the store because there is no space for my wheelchair. My partner is also disabled and cannot sit down in the store, because the only seating is reserved for children. And they told her she couldn't sit down. I wish the high price (even when the books can often be beat up but they're charging new prices and excluding it from sales) reflected on how they paid the staff, but their now hiring posts are always minimum wage. It only works because their staff is so friendly. The owner is raking in the cash, underpaying them, and making sure their regulars aren't welcome. They're using the look of an independent bookstore, while really being a chain that takes advantage of employees. It's a heartbreaking realization. I wish they could fix it back to what it was. read more

Like the Northridge location, this truly has become a wonderful community space. I've attended a couple of their monthly book clubs and I had such a great time! The Store Manager typically hosts book club and she has been so hospitable. Typically, she'll bring snacks and nonalcoholic drinks for us to enjoy during our meetings. I highly recommend following them on IG and or signing up for their monthly newsletter to stay in the loop about all the events they have going on. I've gotten many gifts for friends here because there are some items that are still in their original, unopened packaging. There are bargain books that starts from $3.00 and journals, notecards & notebooks for $5.00. The books are in good condition. They even have a Vintage section and some books were wrapped in plastic. A thrift bookstore near me?! Are you kidding me?! I visited The Village for dinner to be pleasantly surprised to find this cute bookshop!!! I am so excited about this. Their prices are incredible. On the day that I went in, it was 50% off everything. Being the bookworm that I am, I was mesmerized. However, I was also with my boyfriend. As much as he loves me and will never admit that he's losing patience, I knew I needed to be quick. Therefore, I will certainly make a trip soon on my own time. They have everything from new to slightly used to vintage books. There was so much to look at, just an incredible collection. Thank you book lords for opening up this shop next to me. So happy to see a book store in The Village!!! It's on the 2nd floor, across from Burke-Williams, so you might not even know it is there. Go visit, right away! They've very recently opened, so you can tell they're still working on the space. But, when we stopped in, there were plenty of shelves of various books, many heavily discounted. Tons of new bestsellers and award-winners, as well as all the other types of books one might find in a book store. They also have various aisles of gifts, books and otherwise, and toys. I was quite surprised by some of the 'older' items they also sell, like vintage books, a table with some vintage/antique (I didn't check that closely) plates, cups, etc., and some vintage posters. Definitely a unique collection of items. But, again, it's a bookstore! We need to foster more reading of text in our society, so go there, take your friends there, and support this bookstore!! read more

Went for the first time today. They had a great selection, nice staff, and most of the books were fairly priced.

I got SO excited when I saw this at the Village! I've been going to the Northridge location but I live about 10 min away from the Village so this will definitely become my primary location. Just as well organized as the Northridge location and a great selection. Maybe because it's newer but I found SO many great copies here for the same great prices. I couldn't stop filling my basket! My favorite genres are fiction, classics, thrillers, and horror and I will say I feel the Northridge location has a better classics section but this one had a better horror section. Staff was pretty friendly at this one but the Northridge location definitely feels more homey and warm. Perhaps this location needs to settle in more, or it's just a matter of it being more spacious and spread out, but just something small I noticed. ALSO a tip for newcomers--they offer a student discount and have stamp cards! Can't wait to come back!! read more

OMG-what a find! I went there for the first time yesterday after searching online for ANY used bookstore still existing. A wide selection of new & used books, jewelry, crystals, memorabilia, posters and a wonderful looking children's separate section that has a huge dragon named Goldie! The staff were super nice & helped me find exactly what I was looking for! I bought one of their brand canvas bags to hold my treasures (& support the store). To find it: Victory & Topanga, right before big Costco sign towards Total Wines store. Take escalator up to 2nd level, Open Book is a huge store near a spa on that level. I highly recommend you stop by at least once to see everything they have there- kinda reminded of The Strand in the Village in the old days-fun! read more

A spacious interior, with a multitude of sections and a rich selection of titles for all tastes. Don't miss its non-book sections of posters, collectible toys (including a lovely miniature '62 Jag XKE!), buttons of all sorts, old magazines, and too much else to mention. Topanga Village's extremely restrictive signage policies can make the search for The Open Book akin to the travails of the Louis & Clark expedition. Definitely one of the best go to bookstore chains not only in the valley but all of california! You will find sections and titles that have been banned elsewhere.
