A pinched nerve in the lower back (L4/5) would unpredictably stop me in my tracks with pain that went from 0-10 caused by any weight on my left leg. The most embarrassing episode was at Costco where an employee took me to the car in one of their scooters as I was otherwise frozen in place outside checkout. Then I was referred to Next Step, where John Stepien's combination of deep tissue massage and lomi lomi apparently managed to release the impingement, because the spasms suddenly disappeared after 2 weeks/4 sessions. The treatment is personalized and very effective. They do manual stretching, heat pack and muscle stem each time and some exercises they make sure you know how to do correctly after you leave. I appreciate the same staff every visit. I recovered quickly post rotator cuff surgery and spoke with others who started at Jaco and were relieved to have found the team at Next Step in the same building. I highly recommend this Physical Therapy clinic. John assessed problems in my left shoulder and made my stretch and strength training program. John and his fellow therapists were very knowledgeable and gave me an answer every time I asked about my shoulder. I did PT for my knee and neck at different clinics, but I didn't get good results from them. But I got back my flexibility and gained strength in my shoulder from Next Step Therapy! John gave every patient stretch session after the strength training. It was absolutely amazing! I was able to move my shoulder more and more after each session! This place is amazing. I was instantly set as ease when I met John. He listened closely to my story so he could recommend the proper exercises I needed to perform in order to get better. Showed up to my FIRST PT appointment 1 week after surgery and was told that I am clear to walk without crutches. The PT did not even examine how I was walking with crutches and did not recommend any transitional steps towards being able to walk without my crutches. Meantime he also commented on how I have too much swelling and should rest and the longer I stand the worse the swelling will get. I felt confused by that... do I put my crutches away and start walking on my newly operated knee or do I rest until the swelling goes down? He had also done zero communication with my surgeon regarding my protocol and was asking if I knew how long I should be wearing my brace, how far out post op I am, how long I should wear my brace...? Overall I felt like the PT did not even know what he was treating, and everything he said felt like a recording of something he probably says to everyone. I canceled my future appointments and scheduled with a different clinic. I would not recommend going here. read more

Located in the orthopedic bldg on Beretania, they are easy to get to. Unpretentious, all their equipment is layed out in one big room. There are a couple of rooms which are also open to others to see you for the massage and traction therapy. You will see other clients being worked on at the same time. Check-in is easy at the desk. They book fast so don't expect last minute appointments. They are quite busy but I have never had to wait. They are punctual and see clients on the hour. The following week, Daniel got to play in a tournament in San Diego. He played flawlessly. They won the whole thing!! Thank you Next Step Crew... Five years later, a second season-ending injury (this time requiring surgery) put her back in Coach Step's care. He not only remembered specific details of her original injury he remembered which exercises helped the most. Her recovery was fast and complete. Fast-forward two more years. This time it's a knee injury and more surgery. Her poor mind was as damaged as her cartilage. Once again, Coach Step to the rescue. While this recovery has been the most difficult, Coach Step has managed to make it a positive and focused process. My daughter has begun to believe she actually will play her sport again, without pain. She is growing confident as she sees her muscles growing. After playing soccer for nearly my entire life, it was just a matter of time before my knees or legs or hips would give out. That time came sooner than expected and I wasn't able to run for about three weeks due to pain along my sciatic nerve. I went in to Next Step Therapy, who accommodated me on a very late notice (thank you friendly front staff girls!). I was able to see John and he totally alleviated my anxiety! He answered all of my questions and explained to me exactly what was going on, the causes of the pain, and showed me stretches and exercises that I could to do to alleviate the pain. I try to routinely do the stretches and exercises, and haven't had any problems since. John also recommended how I could change up my workouts to prevent future problems with my knees, hips, and shoulders. This was an added bonus! He not only wanted to treat my current problem, but wanted to preempt any future problems. I felt that John went above and beyond for just some, what I thought, minor pain. He could really relate to what I was going through, because he himself played sports, and still today tries to live an active lifestyle. So John doesn't just know the "academia" side of things, but also the practical side of things too. I also really appreciated that John could explain technical science terms and concepts to me in a digestible manner. Not many people are able to do that nowadays. I now recommend anyone I know in need of some physical therapy to Next Step. I know that John and his staff will get the job done. It's not like other physical therapy places where you will just be left to do exercises in the corner of a crowded room. John and his staff give patients the 1-on-1 attention they need to recover and/or get stronger in the most efficient and effective way possible. They'll take the time to really work with you, and be there to chat and answer any of your questions. As far as logistics, the office is located in a convenient location, right at the corner of Keeaumoku and Beretania (you can enter from Beretania or off of Young Street).
