Here is how my Monday went: First big November storm we've had in a while, and suddenly there is water dripping from my roof, into my closet. Awesome. If you are a homeowner in Seattle, you probably know what comes next: call every roofing company in town and stop just short of letting them re-roof your entire house to take care of one tiny leak, because apparently that is the only way anyone will even talk to you in this town right now. But, Nick was different. He has this same conversation all day long. He did tell me there was a service fee. But, I've come to expect that for small jobs, and I'm ok with it. Honestly, I am not going to get 3 bids on a $250 job anyway. Call me crazy. Nick called when he said he'd call, showed up when he said he'd show up, showed me photos of what was wrong, and photos of what he did to fix it. He charged what seemed like a fair price for the work, and that was that. I'd call him again or recommend his work, without hesitation. We were really grateful for his help on such short notice. He went above and beyond in his work, not just fixing the problem at hand but also doing a full roof inspection, identifying other soon-to-be leaks and other issues and ultimately fixed more things than we ever expected him to fix. Turns out we need a roof replacement. He came up with an estimate and also talked us through some less expensive alternatives in case we couldn't afford replacement but wanted to fix pressing issues. I cannot believe how good of a job Nick and his crew did on my roof. Our project was extraordinarily complicated - we had several layers of old roof to remove, tons of wood damage to repair, and bad weather to navigate. After that last wind storm (Dec. 2018) we had lots of shingles in the yard, I called Nick on Saturday afternoon, he was up on my roof, in the dark, sending me pictures of what the issues where, that night. HIGHLY RECOMMEND NGB ROOFING! Due to a death in the family, I recently found myself in the unfortunate position of being in charge of handling repairs for a family home that has been neglected in recent years. I live out of state making the whole situation even more difficult. During a home inspection for a potential sale of the property, extensive mold was found in the attic. The mold remediation company required the roof be checked and repairs made prior to remediation work taking place. I called a few roofing companies in the local area and none could or would do the job... either I couldn't get a call back or the companies wouldn't do roof inspections and/or minor repairs (only full roof replacements). In a bit of desperation, I called NGB Roofing on recommendation of the mold remediation company. I didn't have much hope because NGB Roofing is not in the local area of our family home, but I thought I'd at least ask. Even though Nick is located more than an hour south than our family home, he was willing to come out and take a look within one day! He made an honest assessment of recommended work with a total cost that was very reasonable. He even called the mold remediation company to double-check repair items, ensuring between the two of them, all items would be completed properly. Nick made the long trip north again, this time with a work partner, and the two of them completed the work prior to the mold remediation company... just as needed and promised. His work was very good and he sent me many photos (before and after). Nick explains everything in detail and is happy to entertain questions. I can't say enough good things about Nick! We have some windows we need replacing that required a roofer and within 5 minutes of a phone call, he had me send him photos so he could decide if he could do it. He was over within a few days and also hopped on our roof to look it over in case anything needed repairing. He pointed out the cause of the leak, and noted other defects on the roof from the crappy construction job the builder had done only a few years ago. When the rain stopped, Nick and his crew came out and did the work as promised. They also caulked the additional joints as promised. NGB Roofing did a great job with some leaks and fan vent hookup work we had. The previous homeowner seemed to have done some DIY flashing (why?!?) that meant just about every hole in our roof (e.g. vents/skylights) were either failing or about to. I sought ought help when we heard the dreaded drip-drip on our bathroom counter in the middle of the night during a heavy rain. Nick came out same day to take a look and gave me a quote then and there. He wasn't sales-ey at all, though. He did it in a way where it felt genuinely helpful to have that information on day one. We hired them a few hours later. Within a few days, we had all 3 skylights and all 6 attic vents replaced. They also removed and patched the hole for a no-longer-used wood stove chimney pipe. Finally, they got fans/vents hooked up and working for our range hood and two bathrooms (more butchered DIY from previous homeowner). Nick and his crew were a pleasure to work with and stayed late to get the job done. Seriously, after working a full day they were in the attic at nearly 9pm wrapping things up (after asking us if working in the house that late was ok, of course). It rained in my kitchen ya'll!! I called NGB roofing on the recommendation of a friend that owns a renovation company and has used them on her own home. Nick, the owner, came out right away. He located the source of the major leak immediately and expertly repaired it. Called NGB after discovering a roof leak. It was something I needed done fairly quickly and Nick was quick to respond. After doing an inspection he explained all options on the table, giving the pros and cons for each. He also explained everything showing me pictures he had taken to help me understand. Nothing short of amazing. In my job, I connect people who want IT services with companies that can provide IT services. So, a large part of my job is evaluating IT vendors to see if what they offer is really a value added service, or just fluff or some cheap marketing gimmick. Think of me as a general contractor for IT services. I was able to use transfer those skills in evaluating different roofers. We moved into this house 2 years ago. It was a cedar shake roof, about 15 years old. The estimated life span for a cedar shake roof is about 20 years, if you don't maintain it--and this roof hadn't been maintained. When we were in the process of buying the house, we hired a home inspector to come out to evaluate the house. The inspector noted on his report that "the roof was showing its age" and it would either need to be cleaned and treated or replaced. Replacing a roof is a big project to take on. The inspector had mentioned other things that we needed to repair in addition to the roof, but the roof was the biggest. And the most important. I grew up in an old 1920s home. My parents never got the roof quite right, and we always had leeks in the house which really cause a lot of damage to the structure of your house. You don't want that, so you really have to get the best person for the job. That person, without a doubt, is Nick. I applied the same process I use for evaluating vendors to evaluating roofers to replace my roof. In total, I had 16 roofers come out to give me quotes over a period of about 3 months. What I can tell you is that Nick is not like any of the other roofers I met. He was the first roofer I called. What surprised me was when I asked him to come out to give me an estimate. He said he didn't want to get into some sort of bidding war with other vendors. He told me to go out and meet other vendors and see what they say. If you like what they offer, then go with them. But if you want me to come out after that, then give me a call. So, he was the first vendor I called, and the last vendor I met with. So, by the time I met with Nick, I had already met with 15 other roofers, and had gotten proposals from them. Meeting with different vendors really was my education--I asked them questions, learned about what to look for in a good roof. More importantly, I could evaluate their proposal both on the basis of cost and on the basis of quality. The reason I chose to go with Nick was the care, attention to detail and knowledge and curiosity he demonstrated when I met with him. To make a long story short, my water heater leaked 2 weeks before meeting Nick, partially flooding my basement. Water had pooled up for a 3 days against a drywall in our basement. My insurance covered it, and we got ServePro to come out and suck up all the water and dry out the carpet. ServePro insisted that everything was fine, but I was worried about that drywall. When Nick came over to look at the roof, he wanted to look at the whole house, not just the roof. Nick had a moisture reading tool that looked like a meat thermometer tool that he poked into my drywall in an inconspicuous place. This gave a reading for moisture deeper into the wall. The ServePro people also had a moisture reading tool, but it was just a surface scanner. It showed that there was residual moisture. He said the only way to know for sure would be to cut a small section of the drywall away and look. I said yes, and he cut a small piece of the drywall with a hacksaw he had in his truck. He cut a small section below the baseboard line, so it would't show after I reinstalled the baseboards. Fortunately, the wall looked okay. In total, Nick spent 2 or 3 hours at my house. That really impressed me because it showed that he was really concerned about doing a good job. By the time he got to looking at my roof, I was sure I wanted to go with him. When I first met him, Nick said that he wasn't the cheapest, and he wasn't the most expensive. He really didn't try to sell me on anything and he knows what he's talking about. Some of the roofers I met I would characterize as sales organizations, trying to push a product or sale, without any real knowledge of the product or service they are handling. Nick is a real gem in that he is the real deal and he doesn't try to sell you anything. Nick just finished our roof in 7 days. His crew worked hard--came in early and stayed late every day, even on the weekend. Nick pays incredible attention to detail. I have a small 3 year old boy. Everyday, at the end of work, his crew cleaned up the site and ran a magnet over the whole ground, to pick up any nails that might have fallen. His crew was well mannered-no swearing, no smoking. The roof looks fantastic! There are several things that Nick does differently than most roofers and those things really help to protect the roof, I can't go into details here as I am out of space.
