We arrived about 30 minutes early for our reservation, and the staff kindly allowed us to wait inside, which we really appreciated since London was experiencing record-high temperatures during our trip. The only small issue was that one of our appetizers was mixed up, but it did not take away much from the overall experience. The meal itself was fantastic. I had the Bò Kho, and it was rich, flavorful, and exactly the kind of comforting Vietnamese dish I was hoping for. Everything we tried was fresh, well-prepared, and full of flavor. Overall, Cay Tre delivered an excellent dinner experience. Aside from the minor appetizer mix-up, the food was amazing, and I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for great Vietnamese food in London.

After 15 minutes of waiting and no service, we just got up and left this useless Pho place. It wasn't worth it. There are plenty of options in Covent Garden. We just walked down the street and found a nice place to eat where the service was far better. If you are a tourist visiting this area, avoid this place. Save your time and your money. I ordered the fresh spring rolls with prawn and the combination pho. The pho came out before the spring rolls. The fresh prawns spring rolls were average with small prawns. You get two with your order. The pho broth was very greasy and not very flavorful. I would have expected to have hints of anise and cinnamon. I need parts for the strangest texture. It was more at like an American or Italian meatball then a proper Vietnamese style meatball. Even the type of steak and brisket that was used was very strange. They offered a sprig of basil and mint with broken remnants of bean sprouts in a teeny square container. My daughter ordered the Banh Xeo but when the waiter corrected her and said "pancake" we really should have sprinted out the door. This item was listed as a meal but was the size of an appetizer, 6 inches in diameter. It was essentially fried vegetables with a hand-sized fried rice cake thrown on top. This place really does an injustice to Vietnamese food. We overheard two staff talking in Chinese who were most likely the owners. Explains how Vietnamese food could have been done so badly. Surprisingly the broth was the best part of the soup. We had a 3 hour break between Harry Potter Part 1 and Part 2, and I had seen many Pho restaurants in the Chinatown area. So found the one with most stars on both Yelp and Maps, and Com Viet came up. It is a short walk, and they promptly opened at 5, and we were the first ones one. We were done with the meal and out of there in 30 minutes, so they were very efficient. The food was OK, and served quickly. The beef pho is normally £13.50, but I asked for extra noodles so got bumped to £17 (which is more than 20 dollars). It didn't come with extra noodles (or they serve very little noodle in the normal). It is the thick rice noodle kind...if someone orders extra, there is no reason why you shouldn't just overfill it...rice noodle is cheap. What I should have done is get a refill after I had left over broth. The broth itself was very good, but there was very little beef (just sliced and no other options) and the bean sprouts, basil, and culantro. It was all pretty limp and sparse. It was strange...they had all the signs of a generic restaurant that serves a lot of dishes, and has pho on the menu..but this usually means the broth is made from powder. I don't think this was...it tasted like genuine cooked broth....but the noodle miss really put a bad taste for this place. Also ordered chicken wings (£9.80) and spring rolls (£8.60). The wings were good...7 pieces cooked over a charcoal fire, but a bit bland and not crispy. The spring rolls were 3 small ones, split in half, served with chili sauce, stuffed with vegetables. The service was OK, doing the minimum. There is a mandatory 12.5% service charge added. Yes, I know that this is a tourist area, but the Chinese and Korean restaurants do a good job of serving a good rendition of their cuisine that could survive in other non-tourist places. Com Viet would not survive outside of this area....the food is too mediocre and expensive, and would be a bad choice for a pho craving.
