I really dislike leaving negative reviews, but my hair was botched so bad I wouldn't want to wish this on my worst enemy-- so PLS READ before visiting. I had 4 short days in NYC and wanted to get my split ends trimmed. I made an appt with Nica & Sam Salon after seeing the glowing reviews. They took me in the same day with an older Russian lady named Nicole. Nicole was stoic, inexpressive, and dismissive, even when I tried to make small talk (but that's ok I thought--not related to quality or haircuts). I requested for toning + cut. Nicole cut my hair rather quickly and then proceeded to do a blowout (+heated curling iron) without asking me. By the time I noticed, I asked her to stop since I didn't request that, and she said that she already did half of my hair so just let her finish. It looked good but I just didn't ask for that... and usually after getting a haircut I'm used to seeing the hair straight to see how it was cut. So she ended up charging me for the blowout that I didn't ask for-- which I ended up being OK with since it looked good, but in retrospect that was sus. But after washing my hair and seeing the cuts without the curls, I immediately regretted visiting her. I immediately visited my hair stylist after returning to California to fix the mess she made. As you can see in the photos, the hair layers are not symmetrical at all and they are so choppy and random. There are gaps in the the cuts -- it's just very poorly done. I can't speak for other stylists since I only had experience with Nicole. But stay away from her for haircuts. read more

I unfortunately had a very negative experience to report. I found this salon online and nabbed an appointment while in town on business. I really needed to get my bangs trimmed. I was open to a trim all over - figured, might as well. When I arrived the shop had a different name on the door. Was I even in the right place? Weird vibe. It started off ok, the person who shampooed my hair was friendly and inspired confidence. She told me my hair was super healthy. Then I was passed off to a stylist, Joe. And he hacked off most of my healthy hair moments later... It started off on the right track with him asking what I wanted and I told him I wanted only a trim, to keep my hair length and that I wanted to keep the bangs below the eyebrow. They were just a little long. I wasn't looking for a brand new hairstyle - just a touch up. He asked how much he could trim from the rest of my hair and I said I was on with 1-2 inches, just to keep it looking healthy. But he got overzealous when he started cutting and went way shorter than we discussed, and he seemed nervous. It was too late to really say anything because he already cut one huge section and I didn't want him to panic and make it worse. But when he got to my bangs I got more vocal and I gently reminded him I wanted them to be on the longer side, past the eyebrow. The bangs turned out so bad, folks. I spoke up and asked for some adjustments but it was unsalvageable and he was so so nervous. He smelled like cigarettes and dropped things the entire time. I didn't want to make him more nervous and make things worse so I tried to just make the best of it, but I'm so disappointed. He gave me a blow out while he dried my hair so the back looks ok now but I'm afraid to see what the cut looks like when I wash and dry it on my own. It was expensive, he went overboard cutting, and he was nervous and seemed to lack skills and basics. Even when he was drying my hair, I asked him to use heat protectant because he hadn't used any and was going in aggressively with the blow dryer on full blast on my hair. I'm sorry to leave a bad review but it was one of the weirdest and worst hair experiences of my life and I wouldn't recommend it. I've been coming here for 10 years and I've never once been disappointed. The stylists here take extreme care in making sure you are satisfied with the service you request. I've gotten blowouts, countless haircuts, balayage, and different dye-jobs and always have loved the outcome. Stylist Etti recently did my balayage, giving my black hair almost ash blonde highlights! I even had black dye in my hair prior to my visit! Giselle and Nica have been cutting my hair ever since I was 14. They take extreme care in cutting not even a millimeter more of hair than I ask for. They make sure I love all angles of my haircut. This place has very attentive staff and quality service. It can be pricey, (understandably so given the location) but it's worth it. Sadly did not have a chance to share in the experience that these other five star reviews are raving about. We had an appointment and arrived on time. Then ended up waiting in the seating area for over 15 min before anyone followed up to receive us. The office administrator was busy on the phone, but there were three other employees who noticed us enter the shop and could have helped check us in. One of them was in a barber chair just staring out the window, maybe on his break. A second, was fiddling with the shampoo and product bottles on the shelves. I think she was one of the owners? And a third employee was with a client but also seemed to just be idle and waiting for his client's bleached hair to settle in. When we were finally approached and asked how we could be helped by the receptionist, 15 minutes after we arrived, we mentioned our appointment, and then she motioned for the employee sitting in the chair to come over and help us. I had this place bookmarked for so long and should've come a loooong time ago. Called and they were able to take me in minutes for a cut and toner. I'd been having issues with other salons/consultations in that they just couldn't advise a good solution based off of what I was asking for. Thank god for this place. They were honest, realistic, and very informative all without being rude (very hard to find in this city). Regarding the cut, I was very specific about what I wanted and had explained that for the past few years, others have just not gotten it right. The cut is very structured to begin with, but I'm really picky about how it blends and transitions. At the end, I even (wrongly) questioned the cut out of my paranoia from past experiences. This is my 4th time going to Nica and Sam, once for a haircut with Eti and 3 times for color with Sasha. I am so pleased with the quality and professionalism of each of the stylists. The prices are fair and they really aim to please, taking time and making the effort to try to achieve what you ask for. The end result has been wonderful and I strut out feeling terrific! I would recommend that the salon offer tea, coffee and maybe some cookies or fruit. That would add more of a feeling of hospitality when one enters. I have to say, it's my first time in the salon and I don't recommend this place at all. As I walked in with my friend, I didn't feel a welcoming environment. It's quite an empty atmosphere. Whenever you refused to do, they will pressure you to do it. Like I don't want to wash my hair, you trying to make me pay extra money. My friend did her hair and tell you what, the lady who did her hair, over cut her hair where it gotten shorter and when she blow drys her hair, her scalps was burnt and her hair became damaged. While for me, she clearly doesn't know what a 90's Cindy Crawford blow out looks like, she can't even give me a blowout and gave me something else that I don't want. Then we got charged $200 plus tip which isn't worth it. My friend's hair got damaged where her hair is falling out and honestly, does the lady know how to do hair? Does she even goes to school for this? Then we got charge for something that isn't worth $200 with all the damage. I'm very certain that, I'm not putting my foot towards the salon. read more

Not the worst haircut I got in Manhattan but definitely far from the best. I asked for a trim. The stylist was extremely impatient and cold, as if she was in a rush to go somewhere else. Definitely not a quality you'd want in a stylist! She held the hairdryer close to my scalp it burned, and repeatedly scuffed her comb over my ears. FYI - This review is just for a simple cut and blow-dry; not coloring. My first time was a couple of weeks ago and it was a big disappointment. This may be because I've been spoiled by excellent customer service at other salons and thought Nica & Same would meet the yelp above standard expectations, however, it fell short. First, the girl who was at the register looked uninterested in being there and only when I introduced myself and said I had an appointment did she send me to a girl who was available to wash my hair. The girl who washed my hair was very pleasant and kind (to be honest, she was probably the best worker there!). She also gave me a cup of water while I waited for my hair dresser. The hair dresser assigned to me (who's name I forgot) looked utterly depressed and did not want to be there at all (was he forced against his will?). He didn't greet me or say hi, just asked how I wanted my hair cut and styled and that was the extent of our conversation. He also didn't care that I had a cup of water in my hand and started cutting...which led to hair falling in my cup before I even had the chance to put it onto the table. I get people have bad days, but being in that chair with someone who didn't want to be there just made me feel depressed as well. Overall, the cut was basic, and NOT worth the amount they charged. He cut maybe 1-2inches off my usual and the cuts looked a tad blunt. Personally, this may have just been a bad experience from my end and I'm happy to hear others have received positive experiences. I may come back again, but probably to another location while being a bit more selective with who cuts my hair. read more

I went on a saturday around 4:30 pm and called before coming in since I didn't have an appt. they said I could walk in so I arrived 5 mins later and was already able to be seen! I had my hair washed, cut, and dried and was out in about an hour! Nicole cut my hair and did such an amazing job. I told her I just wanted a hair cut and some layers and she decided to give me long layers after assessing my hair. it turned out so well and I was very happy with the result! it looks so much healthier and flattering. everyone was very friendly, professional, and efficient. the price was reasonable and they had a 10% off for new customers deal if you check in on yelp! also keep in mind they only accept tip through cash or venmo; you can't add a tip when paying with a card. luckily, I had some cash on hand so this wasn't an issue for me! read more

Eti is an absolute genius when it comes to hair. I have been going to Nica & Sam for 3.5 years and have never loved a salon more than I love it here. I actually just moved down to Charleston but still try to get my hair done with Eti every time I visit because I can't seem to find anywhere else that gets my hair color more perfect than here. She has been able to keep my hair healthy while taking it to lighter shades of blonde and even completely white when I wanted to put pastel colors in it. I'm honestly shocked this place got such a high average rating and was recommended by neighbors. I received the worst cut and styling here that I've ever had. My hair was dry and had tangles of hair in it still when I left and looked unkempt and unhealthier than how it did it in the morning. The layers were cut straight, so they fall in clumps, instead of how I've seen it done at an angle my entire life. And my hair feels so dry that I want to wash it to make it feel bouncy again. I was in town for work and on a whim decided to seek out a haircut. I figured as a walk-in on a Saturday I wouldn't have much luck but Nica and Sam were able to squeeze me in! I opted for a wash, cut and blow dry. The salon itself is understated, nothing too fancy, but appeared clean and welcoming! Every employee I came in contact with was very accommodating. I left with one of the best cuts I've ever had, and a blowout that was a major confidence booster! The only issue is that now I must travel to NYC for future cuts. Fast and easy haircut, which is great for busy moms like myself. My stylist (I forgot to inquire about his name but he's the charming Russian guy with blonde hair) accommodated my request to cut my hair in 2 ponytails (I was donating it) and then styled it so it would work for my busy life. He also guided me towards a hairstyle that would flatter my face. The whole process took 35 minutes and was super easy. I have been coming here for years and I've consistently gotten great haircuts at fair prices. Everyone is friendly and the place is nice and clean. It's one of those rare gems in NYC - far more often you'd pay double or triple the price and not get nearly as good of a cut. I have gone to a number of stylists there over the years and all have been terrific, but I almost always go to Haydee (I've only had the other stylists when I needed to get a cut at a time she's unavailable). She's the absolute best...consistently does a fabulous job and is an absolute sweetheart. I adore her and in over 20 years of living in the city, she's been my hands down favorite. I moved to Chelsea a few months ago from Hells Kitchen where I lived for years and tried a few places in the area just because they were closer to me. One was a mess (read my other reviews), others were fine or even good, but none were as good as Nica & Sam/Haydee. Now I just come here again...no reason to go anywhere else. read more

Highly recommend this salon because I have found my new spot to go to!! Vandio was meticulous about my highlights and handling my hair with care and patience for 5 hours. I usually observe the process and noticed how Vandio took his time to pick strands and brush bleach as close as possible to my scalp. Sam (owner) was very attentive to my hair and making sure that my hair would undergo a bleaching process with minimal breakage. He explained exactly what was being done and very honest about the process since my hair was a hot mess with black hair and old highlights. He also assisted in blow drying my hair and explained how to take care of my hair til my next visit. Their prices are great for a whole head of highlights. I previously had a hairdresser for about 8 years; however, will come back to Nica & Sam because their hair expertise and prices are ideal in my neighborhood and for my price range as my hair is long (down to my waist). Their was an incidence with a rude customer that I had encountered during my time there. The staff (particularly Hope at the front desk) was extremely kind, professional, and accommodating to her needs despite the lady snapping at her. Even William who washed my hair was extremely polite and took gentle care washing my hair and asking if I needed a fresh towel since the previous one was a bit wet. The spectacular job of highlights and blow dry that was done was also confirmed by the amount of attention I had gotten on the street while walking home. This will be my go to salon and will be recommending to friends in the neighborhood. The salon is clean with great products (Biolage, Keratase) as well to maintain your hair care. They even gave me a beautiful bag with free products with instructions on how to use the various samples. What a great 5 hour experience!! read more
