I stopped by to ask about booking a last-minute appointment, knowing it might be a long shot. Still one of the stylists took the time to speak with me, assess my hair, and offer really helpful, honest advice. They couldn't fit me in to do any processing on my hair but tried their hardest knowing that i'm from out of state. The stylist i was lucky to meet was incredibly personable and genuinely tried to fit me in, which I really appreciated. It's clear they care about their clients and take pride in what they do. WOW!!! I'm from Florida and I would book a flight to NYC just to come here to get my hair done again. This salon absolutely rescued me from a terrible hair emergency! No joke, we had just got off of the airplane to start my bachelorette party and when we came out of the Disney store, a bird POOPED IN MY HAIR! This was around 6pm and several salons I called were either closing too soon or too busy to help me. When I explained the situation to David Ryan Salon, they let me know that they were also incredibly busy, but that they could help me. Their hospitality meant the world to me! We sprinted to the salon and Robert washed my hair and gave me the best blow out I've ever had. At the end of the blow out, my hair looked and felt so phenomenal that I was happy a bird pooped in my hair. It was the perfect confidence booster to launch a bachelorette party and I'm still on cloud nine. Thank you Robert, for making me thankful for such an odd situation instead of upset. I called for a last minute blow out a day before the holiday. I got an appointment for a half hour later, which was great. The salon itself is very nicely put together, although if you have trouble with steps, be aware there's a steep steep at the entrance. I'm so sorry I can't remember the name of the stylist who worked with me - he was terrific. I asked for a blow out with bounce, and he delivered! My hair looked terrific. It has stayed looking terrific through the second day, despite the humidity. I'm sure it will last for quite a while . I asked for extra hair spray, and he used something that brushes through beautifully. The lady who washed my hair, whose name I didn't get, gave a lovely head massage with the wash. Price was within NYC norms, about $50 plus tips which took it to about $70. This salon was recommended by the concierge at Citizen M, and he was spot on. read more

I walked in randomly one afternoon to get a color consult and was able to come in for the full appointment a few days later. Here's the thing. We live in Vermont and, may I just say, it can be CHALLENGING, to get a good haircut in The Green Mountain State. So there's that. But also, Miranda has been keeping her hair waist long forEVER and was just not able to wrap her mind around actually cutting it. As in getting a style and framing her face and just losing some of all that. And, again, the stylists in Vermont were not "helpful" in making any kind of change. So we were FINALLY going to be able to get back to NYC and I decided I would take the opportunity to take Miranda to an actual, legit salon where a stylist with knowledge, experience and skill would be able to do some "makeover" magic. But! I also needed that stylist to bring the Good Vibes and the Positive Energy to make this a GOOD experiences for Miranda. You know? Back in the 80s, when I was coming up and would sometimes get my hair done in NYC the "salon vibe" was, frankly, STRAIGHT MEAN. Like everyone was snotty and rude and mean. Probably because they were all also starving themselves in a doomed attempt to get that starved look that was ALL the craze back then. Also, of course, I have curly hair and that was just not a thing. It was never a good, fun, positive experience for me. But I'm GROWN these days and figured I could direct the whole situation as required to steer it in the right direction. I didn't have to. Every aspect of our visit to David Ryan Salon was pretty much perfect. I chose David Ryan because we were staying in The Garment District and I knew I could find a place, walking distance, in Hell's Kitchen. So I went online and read through descriptions and services offered and online reviews. David Ryan Salon, in the heart of Hell's Kitchen, is a GORGEOUS spot. The interior is really just perfect. It was quiet while we were there, but also we'd brought 2 small toddlers with us. So that was just as well. When I booked Miranda's appointment I chose to request a Master Stylist. Because, WHY NOT? Two things: if you're paying a professional to do something, get the good one! Also, there is no such thing as a good, cheap haircut. That being said, Miranda's cut and style was $130. Which, IMO, is NOT expensive for an excellent haircut from a skilled stylist. Miranda's stylist was Madion Russo. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Madion. Not only is he EXTREMELY good at what he does. He is kind. Kindness goes A LONG way my friends. Especially when you are talking to someone about their personal appearance and, helping them to change it. Not only did he give Miranda a BEAUTIFUL haircut, he talked to her about coloring and conditioning and styling and ALL THE THINGS in such an easy, approachable way. I haven't written a yelp review in years but I felt compelled to look out for my fellow man. This place is a crapshoot. I had a great haircut with Denis a few months ago. I liked that the salon had a gay vibe and felt comfortable there. I booked a 2nd appt with Denis, but he wasn't there and I was reassigned to another stylist that seem less skilled than Denis. I asked for "a little off the top," to "clip the ends on top" but the stylist cut several inches while recounting a story of betrayal; it was like he was taking his anger out on my hair. I told myself It was my fault for letting someone else cut my hair and looked forward to the next cut with Denis to fix it. I booked a 3rd appt with Denis. I ran a mile across midtown to get there on time and Denis was "at a doctor's apppointment" when I showed up. I went elsewhere. I booked a 4th with Denis (I know. Shame on me but a great stylist is hard to find) and received a call from the stylist that messed up my hair saying "Denis isn't comfortable cutting your hair" and asked if I wanted someone else. Run away from this place! Total scammers. Makes you feel uncomfortable, lies, leurs you into into getting more things done that they can not do. My hair is ruined -burnt!-and the colour was terrible -had a balayage before and it became a joke, worst than if a 5 years old is would have done it- for 1000$! You get treated and talk to in the worst way imaginable. Picture shows my roots growing, red colour isn t supposed to be there since it was suppose to be same as my root colour (excuse was that wrong tube was in wrong box.. okay, mistake are humans, but how about fixing it?) In blond length there is no balayage since bleach has been splattered all over my hair. (I had beautiful balayage before and didn t need another. But now i don t have it anymore) My hair was beautiful one of my best feature. But after being left with bleach on over 3 hours -"colourist" was coming every 20' to tell me he wouldn t leave it on any longer to not damage hair and again went off to another client! 3 times in a row!- it s totally damage with breakage everywhere, too dry and bristle to be saved. I lost 1/3 of the volume cause so much breakeage, and it feels like dry straw. Rude, snappy, wash hair roughly (not well rinced, shower your while face and body with karcher like pressure). Worst hairdresser experience ever. In tears and heartbroken. If i can had other pics i ll put before balayage and after, and 3 days later to "fix" the colour- cause yes, it was even worst on the first visit after waiting and looking forward my appointment for more than 3 weeks.. owners might reply they value their customers and they care that their leave happy, they don t. read more

I came in for a haircut over the weekend. I asked to take off as little as possible and even showed the stylist with my finger. He was nice and personable, however he ended up cutting my long hair (that took me almost a year to grow) extremely short and also cut my bangs. I have not had a haircut this short since I was in the 3rd grade. I now have to get extensions or wear a wig until it grows out, since I have curly hair and it looks really bad. The worst customer experience I've ever had. If I could rate this a -5, I would. tldr: hidden, exorbitant fees, terrible customer communication, and they talk shit about you when you leave details: Pricing deception/terrible communication: I was a new customer and was interested in getting my hair colored. I had inquired about the price ahead of time and was given an estimate of "around $300" - see attached text file. I had Madion as my stylist. At checkout after getting my hair colored, I clearly saw a $250 fee. Madion generously subtracted $50 from the $300 cost, which I thought was a kind gesture, so I tipped him 20% of the cost - see venmo transaction. When I went to check my statement later in the week, I saw that I was charged $395. I called to inquire about the charge, to which Madion explained that the double bleaching cost $250 (after discounting $50), PLUS an additional $130 for the coloring (plus fees, etc). I called disputing that charge, as that additional $130 was not communicated by the salon either in the earlier communication OR during the checkout process (the billing machine clearly said $250). Madion refused to reverse the $130 charge (which again was not made evident to me before the service OR during checkout), and felt very deceptive. They were also very rude on the call, and tried to place the blame on me. Rude to customers: As a new customer, I was surprised at how they spoke about customers when they leave the salon. Example: There was one women who was getting styled during my appointment. She had made some very peculiar comments about the topics being discussed around gay culture. As a gay man, I agree that her remarks were very ignorant and homophobic. I did not, however, appreciate how the stylists made rude remarks about this women when she left the salon, citing that she probably was mentally ill. There was another woman who mentioned working for a big tech company. When she checked out, she mentioned how she would love to come back before six months. After she left, Madion made a pejorative remark doubting that that was likely to happen. The way they were talking about both women felt very unprofessional, and made me wonder what they were also going to be discussing about me after I left. read more

It was the Monday before Thanksgiving. I was in NYC for work and I had a big holiday party coming up. I travel for work and it is hard for me to find time to get my hair done. It has been 8 months since I had last had my hair balayaged and I wanted it to be touched up/ brightened up around my face before my party. I yelped a "Blond Specialist" and found this salon. After an in depth conversation with the manager about what my hair was like and what I needed he scheduled me with Markell. I was concerned about another review here that was not favorable for Markell, but Markell himself assured me that was for a haircut not color. I have been having my hair in all sorts of highlights and color by lots of different stylists for 30 years, so I was fairly confident that I was in good hands and I never could have imagined that it could turn out like it did. Before leaving the salon, I was initially shocked that it was so much darker than I had ever seen it before. It was definitely not brighter around my face like if asked. Markell explained that he did it darker because the toner was a semi permanent color and it would wash out and lighten up within a week. I was disappointed, but I have rocked various shades of blond at different times and I gave him the benefit of the doubt that it would lighten up. I even tipped him because I appreciated that he had fit me in and he had run late doing my hair. But, after I left the bright lights of the salon and saw what had been done to my hair I was devastated. After a week it not only hasn't lightened up, it has turned to complete brass despite desperate handfuls of purple shampoo and conditioner. In 30 years of having my hair highlighted I have never seen it like this. I don't live in NYC. I don't have another $350 to spend and I don't even know how someone can fix my hair now that my natural base color (which always grew out beautifully for 6-8 months between highlights) has been damaged and turned to brass. I contacted the salon twice and left my name and number for the manager to call before he leaves to Australia for 6 months and no one has contacted me back. I have been wearing a hat for a week and have to attend a black tie event next week with this hair... Completely devastated... I post here because at this point, all I can do it hope this doesn't happen to someone else. read more

The stylist (James Anderson) was not welcoming and kept cribbing throughout, for me having long and dense hair since it will demand more time in blow drying my hair. He had prior plans for the evening and kept complaining of leaving early. If that was the case they should not have confirmed/accepted the booking over the call. He was rude and did not let me speak throughout the session and was not at all gentle with my hair while blow drying. I kept asking for reducing the temperature but he did not adjust the temperature. I arrived on time with my husband and waited clueless for extra 20 mins with no greeting no apologizing and then we got stylist swapped, while other customer was greeted and offered wine. The salon made us feel we were not welcomed, or because we are here the first time and have not built relationship, so nobody treated us seriously. Maybe I'm making a big deal out of this but we all know being treated very differently does not feel good or right. The unimaginable happened today. For the first time in my life, I actually walked out of a salon with a head of wet hair in considerably worse shape than when I came in! I came with my normally dark hair lightened to blonde and wanted to lighten it a bit more and remove the brassy undertone. We agreed with the stylist Ruthie that she would add highlights and make it more ashy. What I got instead was first bright orange hair, then she toned it to some drab brownish gray, then when I complained, she argued the problem was my hair, and returned it back to orange. The owner, Maria, tried to salvage the situation but basically neither had any idea how to fix the problem other than to try to convince me that my orange hair was in fact the ashy blonde that I had asked for. Ruthie was abrupt, uncommunicative, and aggressive. An overall unpleasant experience that I hope no one else has to go through. read more

I am SO GLAD I chose this salon. From the moment I walked in to speak with someone about a haircut I felt welcomed. I talked about what I was looking for and was introduced to Robert. He sat me down for a consult and I told him what I wanted along with my fears from bad experiences. Robert heard me completely and made me laugh and feel comfortable. So of course I made an appointment. Robert took time to work with my hair during the appointment. Really paying attention to what my temperamental hair needed and I have a fantastic cut. Completely unprofessional, rude staff. Messed up my color, didn't even listen to what I wanted, didn't talk with me at all. Only to tell me how passionate she was about coloring. Passion (which was not visible at all) is not enough. You also need to know how to do your job properly. Besides that, she was continuously talking in Spanish with the other staff, equally not interested in anything else than eating, drinking, and laughing among themselves. Moreover, while my hair was washed, I felt something wet on my eye brows. It was the same hairdresser from hell, applying the rest of the color on my eye brows!! As that was not enough, here's the cherry on top: more than 300 USD for a plain, one single color. No highlights, nothing, only applying some damn color from a tube. Which looks HORRIBLE. In addition, I had to pay tip. I wasn't going to, but I was pushed by a gentleman (senior?) - who told me clearly that I have to leave at least 20%. She made some suggestions, and I loved her ideas and got really excited. She did an amazing job and I felt a new wave of confidence that I hadn't felt in a long time. After I left and was walking to catch the subway, I caught a lot of heads turning... a handful of cute guys smiled at me ! It felt good. I have been Ruthy's faithful and loving client since I moved to New York two years ago. I have so many wonderful things to say, and have had nothing but awesome experiences with her! When I first moved to New York, Ruthy helped me graduate to the pixie cut of my dreams. We played around with different lengths for a while and she ultimately helped me find my perfect cut. I always wanted to go shorter and shorter, and a lot of stylists discouraged me in the past. Ruthy knew exactly how to cut and shape it and I LOVED it. Then Ruthy helped me find the color of my dreams. I'm very blonde (light but really gold) and I wanted to go lighter and whiter. At first we tried toning it to get rid of the brassiness. Then we tried a few other things after toning didn't give me quite the look I wanted, then she helped me take the plunge and we bleached it. Seriously the haircut and color of my dreams. After a few months of loving that hair I started chemotherapy. She and I had developed an amazing relationship and she was crucial to helping me maintain positive about my hair-loss because of treatment. She was there for me when I needed a loving set of hands to shave off my perfect pixie, and as treatment progressed she helped keep the few stragglers trimmed and even. Now my hair is growing back and we've already started playing with some semi-permanent color (don't want to distress this baby soft hair too much yet, hehe). I can't wait to start playing with edgy short shapes and styles. My experiences with stylists and pixie haircuts have been hit or miss, but Ruthy is truly a professional and she knows what she's doing. So she's lost clients. My teenage son refuses to go back to David Ryan, ever. It's a shame that the stylists are terrific but the manager is an egomaniacal, inappropriate (his sexual commentary with a minor present is horrifying) jerk. If it had been one bad experience, I'd chalk it up to a bad day. It was about a year's worth of appointments- being treated on a spectrum from rude to downright abusive. I am not someone who really ever appreciated a haircut before today. Madion cut and colored my hair with all the care in the world for the person I was, and I truly felt like the best version of myself walking out the door of the salon. Or at least he made me look on the outside how I feel on the inside .. which -when does that ever happen? I think what makes Madion so special is the time he takes to dream up the hair that matches you.. and it's collaborative.
