We went to the day-use area which features one .75 mile trail into the woods, as well as a pathway along one side of Bayou. The trail was nice, flat and full of shade. I learned a lot about the local plants. Bayou/Lake very scenic. the bathroom also was maintained and clean. A great little side trip!

The day area restrooms were closed but there was one for guests to use at the ranger station. They were also renovating the camp sites so all of the trails in the back of the park were closed. The one open trail was only .75 miles so we did a few laps and walked along the bayou for some steps. I would like to return when the trails are open and see the rest of the park.

Now, there is a developed parking area, a mile-long boardwalk with lots of places to rest, walk down to the water, swim, etc. There are signs describing flora and fauna. The park even has a Pavillion large enough for sizable gatherings and events. There is security present and it seems very family friendly. I am impressed. Niceville has grown up. Mum and Dad have been telling me all week about the beach, but I did not really know what to think till today. The sand was white and the water was cold, thanks to dad baptizing me for a surprise dip. After a moment of shock, I did my best Peter impression and walked on water back to the sand. Guessing Dad was unsure if I liked it or not, so he dunked me a couple more times just to be sure. I was a good sport about it, but will have to rethink getting that close to the shore again. I loved running and chasing all the small dogs thru the sand. Wore out a few dogs today, but then again that is what I do. I'm going to ask my parents to bring me back soon, now that I know where the park is. Had a beach of a time and after a long bath , will sleep good tonight.

Falling Waters State Park initially felt a bit small when we arrived, but as we continued to…read moreexplore, we quickly realized it was much larger than we first assumed. Our first stop, of course, was the sinkholes and waterfall. While the waterfall itself felt a little underwhelming considering it's described as the highest waterfall in the state, the experience was still quite serene. Hearing the water drop, feeling the cool breeze from the running water, and simply pausing to take it all in made the stop worthwhile. We were a bit disappointed to find that parts of the trail system were closed off, which limited some of our planned exploration. That said, we kept walking and were able to find other trails to enjoy. We ended up wandering around for about two hours, though we know we didn't get to see everything the park has to offer. One of my favorite unexpected features was the dedicated bat habitat area, which was both interesting and unique. Overall, it's a peaceful park with more to discover than meets the eye, and a nice place to spend a couple of hours exploring nature.

Our favorite was the different merry go rounds, music area, pretend lemonade stand and the building blocks area, and endless areas for kids to run free and get all their energy out. I can't stress enough how valuable it is to purchase an annual SP pass, Florida has so many beautiful parks if you are traveling across the state this annual pass will more than pay for itself. Visiting this park during the off season was especially rewarding, no crowds so we practically had the entire beach to ourselves, the white sugar sand and clear warm water was the perfect place to be on a warm fall day. Although shelling was a disappointment the abundance of wildlife and native plants more than made up for it. This is definitely a state park I'd return too, maybe spend a few days here in the RV when in the area...
