I had a stamp collection which had been stagnant and just sitting in boxes for quite awhile. It was just taking up space and since I had run out of steam on updating it a few years back, it was time to find someone to sell it to. I happened to have Nick's website bookmarked, so I checked it out and gave him a call. He answered right away (which was nice) and we spent around 10-15 minutes talking about my collection. He was really nice on the phone and asked me to send him some photos, which I did. Based on the photos, he expressed interest in purchasing my collection and we made arrangements for him to drive up and check things out. I can't tell you how awesome it was for him to drive 8 hours to look at my collection as sending it all to him would have cost me over $1000. He arrived on time and immediately started looking over my collection. He works fast as he has a really good grasp of stamp values and is able to judge very quickly what the value is. I would say it took him about two hours to go through everything and then he made me an offer which I considered very fair. Payment was instant via Venmo, so no worries about waiting for a check to clear. After that, we packed all the collection in his van, I gave him directions to a nearby spot to grab a bite to eat, and he was on his way. My son and I drove an hour to meet this guy after texting him pictures the day before of a collection that my world traveler great grandfather started back to the late 40s. We had about 8 binders and several boxes of VERY WELL organized stamps, appraisal information from years back as well as several envelopes of holiday stamps dating to the 1800s. When we pulled up, he came out the door of his home (no shop), barely said hello and said "what do you have?" We were expecting to bring in our collection and sit down with him somewhere but when we opened the trunk he immediately reached in , picked up a binder and flipped through it, set it aside, flipped through a second one, glanced around and said "You should use up some of these stamps", and that was it!! No other advice, no "Nice meeting you...NOTHING! The whole experience lasted less than 3 minutes! The guy had no mask on even though we did, so using Covid19 as an excuse is weak. He looked disheveled like he just woke up and was hung over, was horribly rude and frankly seemed to have ZERO interest at all. STAMP EXPERT? I seriously doubt it. It appeared as if he was looking for something in particular for HIMSELF more than "Appraising" our collection! Since then, we have sold less than 20 stamps individually to a Antique Stamp collector in the bay area for over $1,000 and he wants to do an appraisal on the entire collection. After telling him our experience with Nick he said there are a lot of "So called" experts out there just looking to cash in on someone else's naivety. I believe this business is falsely advertised. 1) It lists business hours but no specific location, does not list that it's a home office. It says first step is to call but didn't even answer their phone during their business hours. So I submitted a contact form. 2) First, when I got a call back I got some attitude from him. When I spoke with Nick I did find convenience in being able to text him pics of the collection, but he couldn't possibly get a great idea of what their was without seeing in person. Which he then advised that it wasn't worth it and I should just use the stamps or donate them. Seriously?! That's not why I'm inquiring to your business. It's to sell valuable stamps, which I know for a fact there are several that are worth $100s and $1000s, but he won't even take the time of day. 3) Initially he said he's busy and to come next week, that's not how business hours work. You're either available during them or they're not your business hours. 4) He said "No one buys stamps anymore." So I guess you're out of business then, huh, bud? Good luck making a living with that attitude. At this point even if he did want to do business I'm not interested in giving my business to someone like that. Common courtesy, customer service. I recently inherited a stamp collection from my uncle, loosely packed into 4 large boxes, amassed over about 80 years by three different relatives. I found Nick's stamps through a Google search, contacted him through his web site, and then received a return email within a few hours, and had subsequent contact via phone and text. We arranged a time and then I drove over to Nick's house and dropped off the collection. (Note that this is a home business--it's not a stamp shop, which was fine for me--I wanted to sell the entire collection in one lot, and this appears to be the specialty of this business.) A couple of days later Nick called me up and gave me an assessment of what was in the collection, the condition, and an estimated value. It was less than I had hoped for, since my grandmother had always spoken of "the stamp collection" as if it was something of great value. So for the sake of my grandmother's memory, I decided to take the collection to another stamp shop here in San Diego for a second opinion. When I picked up the boxes from Nick, he had partially organized the collection as part of his assessment. At the second shop (this one was an actual stamp shop), I didn't get much of a reception. The owners are elderly, and were actually kind of overwhelmed. I think they are not able to really assess a large, heterogeneous collection like that. They're more used to someone bringing in a shoe box with a few stamps, probably. In any case, after looking at the stamps a bit and discussing the contents, the dates in question, the way in which the stamps were acquired, I was told they could do a thorough appraisal at $75/hr. We talked some more, I told them Nick's estimated price, and they said I should just take Nick's offer. Same reasoning as Nick-basically, the stamps were mostly common, it would take a lot of time to sort and identify any that were of higher value, they hadn't been stored properly so even a "good" stamp would not command the possible highest price, etc. So I went back to Nick and sold the collection. Regarding the recent review of Meghan F--I wouldn't say it's false advertising. No, it's not a homey old-time stamp shop. It looks as if most of the business is actually done via shipping of collections, not via a "storefront" kind of operation. Maybe he shouldn't post "business hours" because I can see how that would lead to the expectation of a storefront presence. Nick is a straight talker and that may have put off Meghan F, especially since she seemed to be expecting to be able to retire on the proceeds from the sale of her stamp collection. But in my experience, Nick clearly knew his stuff, spent time (efficiently) looking through my collection, communicated in a timely manner, and gave me a realistic appraisal. And no, I don't post a lot of Yelp reviews--in fact, I've only done it for a couple of small one-man operations that had treated me more than fairly and I felt could use the review. John read more

I never leave reviews for companies, but this time I had to. I inherited a big stamp collection from my grandfather who just passed. I am completely clueless about stamps myself. I live in San Diego so I started calling local dealers. I got 3 different appraisals, but they all seemed so low. One of my coworkers referred me to Nick's Stamps. At first I was a bit reluctant because this company is based out of Orlando, FL. To make a long story short, I ended up shipping my stamps across the country to get an appraisal. They offered me 40% more than the 3 local dealers here. The man I dealt with over the phone was just a pleasure to deal with. I didn't feel as though he was trying to rip me off like the others. I inherited a very large stamp collection early this year when my brother passed away and I spent about 6 months going through it and trying to assess what sort of value the collection was worth. I decided to search again for another dealer when I came across Nick. We connected via phone and talked about what I had and I was able to ask some questions and I felt very comfortable that I was speaking with someone who would give me a fair appraisal. Nick came to my home, 1 1/2 hours from where he lives, and spent several hours going through everything. I'm giving a 5 star rating because I don't want to skew the rating scale unfairly, but I do want to note - for others - that Nick's buys and sells large collections of stamps. So if you're looking to buy small lots of stamps for artistic purposes - for decorative use on envelopes, for example - they don't do that here.
