Came home to a gas scent/leak. Called Nicor the lady on the phone was super nice. Very calming (I was kinda freaked out). Service tech was here within an hour. Again another friendly voice , he explained everything. Couldn't fix it because it needed to be dug out near the meter. And the other utilities were not available to mark the yard before digging. 25 years of reliable service--and bureaucratic incompetence Nicor has been supplying natural gas to our family residence for 25 years. Service has been reliable without incident. However, minus two stars in this review because every 5 years or so Nicor sends us a letter reminding us that our gas meter is in our basement (which it always has been), and that it really should be moved outside. Typically these letters admonish us for not having responded to their previous attempts to contact us. This past September we received one of these letters and I did what I always do: I called Nicor, confirmed they have our correct contact information, including email and phone number, and asked what we should do about the meter. Per usual, the representative gave me a phone number to call, and like always I called it. On this latest occasion, Nicor told me to call the Nicor Scheduling Department at 1-800-730-6114 x3. I called and spoke with Leo, who told me yes, they could arrange to have our meter moved outside. Leo told me that he would send an email to their private contractors and we should hear back from one of them in a few days. Surprise! It's been three months and we still haven't heard back. Happens every time. Then, this past October, a Nicor technician came to our house for an "inspection." She saw our gas meter in the basement and told us it should be moved outside. I explained how Nicor has told us this before, but each time we follow up with Nicor, we never hear back. She seemed surprised and told me she would follow up with her supervisor. Okay, fine. Alas, once again, we've heard nothing. I guess we can expect another letter in about 5 years. read more

Nicor has disgusting people in the call center who belittle people and are just NASTY! My husband called to schedule a technician to come turn our gas back on after they turned it off without notice. She told it would be 6 days before they had anything "available " to have someone come out. He told her that was ridiculous as we have children in our house. Her response was "I can make it 7". Totally UNPROFESSIONAL and she should be fired! Nicor could careless if they screw up your bill. They just want money... PERIOD. Also found out Nicor shut off 5 thousand customers right before a freeze at night. They watch to see when it's going to get cold then go out and shut off service so people can freeze, not bathe or make food. Worst company in Illinois!! read more

Nicor is cutting all of the trees down on the easement behind us without any input from customers. There are birds, squirrels and hawks that live in our trees. There is no reason for cutting them all down. Dead ones yes, but the rest could of been trimmed back so their flyovers could see the pipeline. It makes me cry to think of how many animals they killed. We asked them if they could just trim them back and they said no. Not really any reason for this.Nicor sucks! read more

So, four days into my new home and I swear I smell gas. (Or do I? I have NEVER experienced this before, so I'm questioning myself.) I call Nicor, who tells me to evacuate and wait until a technician arrives. I'm freaked out, right? I loaded the kids into the car and parked on the street. Once the technician arrived, though, she wanted me to go through the house with her. So, the kids and I went back into the house. (Eek! I honestly questioned this..) We did a walk through, and she used her instrument and identified a gas leak at the joint of a pipe near my furnace. It was actually tagged by my home inspector, but never mentioned to me neither verbally nor in my home inspection report (!!!)! She told me she'd have to turn off the gas. She also ended up finding a really high (!!!!!!) leak outside at the meter, which she says she remedied. There I am: brand new (to us) house. Two kids under 2. No gas nor hot water. WTF?! And it's now 8:00pm on the weekend. I have no idea what we are going to do, and it sucks. Despite being so frazzled by the situation, she was very calm and informative, telling me who to call and what I needed to do to restore service. Overall, it obviously was a crappy situation, but the Nicor tech did her job and ended up giving me some much-needed reassurance and advice. Thank you! read more

So. Winter and some freezing temperatures arrive and I need to get warm fast. I go to turn on my gas and nothing happens. I figure the pilot light is out, go to light it and nothing. I figure it must be an outage and call Nicor. It turns out they did some work on our townhomes and turned it off last April. I hadn't noticed since we have electric water heaters so the water has been hot. I called them around 8am and they said it was considered an emergency and would send someone right out. So around 8pm after the dog and I had spent the last 12 hours huddled under blankets someone finally came out and got it back on. So what's the big deal? Well, they continued charging me monthly for gas the whole 6 months it was turned off and I'm still battling for a credit. I mean $200+ is not a paltry sum for someone like me. My poor 85 year old disabled veteran has been getting ripped off for years by the so called "Nicor Home Solution"!! The are really good at taking your money, but good luck getting them to answer their phone when you need help!! I was on the line twice for an hour listening to how they will be with you shortly for the same personal service! My poor father was calling at the same time with the same results! Their machine hung up on me one time after listening tho their blah blah blah after thirty minutes! After dozens of calls someone finally answered and came out to check out my fathers central air unit. The tech informed him it would need replacement but the "Home Solutions " doesn't cover replacement, just repairs! Then tried to sell him a new AC unit at twice the price as we had one installed by a local dealer! Nicor gas company says they have nothing to do with the service but they bill him every month and the service is called "Nicor Home Solutions " but n the monthly bill!! It's criminal and shove against the law!! They are fleecing elderly people that just want their paying for! The majority of the individuals who make up a company may be great, but that doesn't make the company itself great. This company cares naught for the customer, and it's clear in every part of their service design. It's November 7th and they told me that I'd have to wait until the 18th to get a technician at my house. We're that a joke, it wouldn't be a funny one. That they were serious is a tragedy. That means no heat or hot water for 11 days, just as winter is setting in! Calling customer service is a headache as you're forced to jump through a bunch of loops to get to where you need to go. You're given a series of very specific choices, with no idea where each will take you--to another series of specific choices or a rep or what. Thus, if you're not entirely sure what your issue is, you have to hope, and trial & failure, until you find the right choice, as there is no "general" operator option available. My issue this: I live in a two unit house and share a bill with my downstairs neighbor, whose name the bill is under. She had just moved in while it was still warm, so hadn't yet put the bill in her name. She'd forgotten to do it, she informed me. However, she had service this entire time so probably assumed it was under my name or the landlords or something. Nevertheless, Nicor comes and shuts service off nov 6th and leaves no information or notification that service is off. I was home, so if they'd knocked, I could have taken care of the issue then and there. My neighbor saw them do it and came to inform me; thanks to him I was able to get a space heater in time to prepare for nightfall temperature drop. These kinds of practices are evidence this company is a heartless machine. The depressed tone in their customer service employee's voices is enough to make you sorry anyone who works for this company--clearly they receive a lot of negative feedback and righteous anger from those with no one else to direct it to but the poor customer service agent. I was angry toward the agent at first, until I remembered they, too, are victims of this company's amoral practices and lack of concern for human well-being, and also it's not their fault. You are NOT allowed to sign up for auto pay if you want to continue to receive a paper copy of your bill. 2. You are NOT allowed to view your prior bills online unless you sign up for auto pay and "paperless billing" (#1 above). I have complained to corporate and receive the usual corporate double-speak. So I will have to continue writing a paper check each month, putting a stamp on the envelope and going to the post office, just so they can incur the additional expense of opening my envelope, processing my paper check and waiting for the funds to clear. This place doesn't even deserve a 1 star. The supervisor there named Scott SHOULD NOT work in any customer service positions let along being a supervisor because he is anything but caring and understanding. He sounds extremely scripted and isn't at all helpful when I tried to explain my situation. He wasn't budging and wasn't helping me out when I asked to have the late fees removed and I'll go ahead and pay the balance. Yet, he said, "No" and went straight to telling me how much I have to pay and the breakdown cost for a payment plan. Really?! How is that customer service? If I didn't have an issue with the bill, why would I go through the trouble of asking to speak to a supervisor just to be told how much I have to pay? Absolutely a ruthless and heartless man. So here's what happened. I just received an automated phone call saying I have a past due balance of over $800 and they haven't received a payment from me for over a year! This was the first they have tried to contact me regarding my account. I have not received any emails nor a letter in the mail notifying me that I had a past due balance. I set up all my bills for auto-pay so all this time, I thought my bills were being taken care of because I didn't receive a past due balance letter/email or phone call. I'm extremely disappointed on how they deal with delinquent balances. I would assume I would receive constant phone calls if they haven't not receive a payment from me after 1-3 months not wait for over a year! I was shocked and beyond frustrated when I got the phone call. Plus I was being charged late fees when I didn't even know I had a balance. Scott kept repeating that the past due balance is sent out on the statement. Well, how am I suppose to get that message if I don't even get a statement?! A simple phone call doesn't hurt anyone because there are many people who for some reason don't receive statements like they are suppose to. Horrible horrible company with under-trained staff. The company need to work on how to communicate with their customers better on their balances and find a replacement supervisor. So, over a year ago, a very reckless backhoe driver, while spinning so fast I thought the cab was going to spin right off, punctured the gas line on the lot next door while under construction. From the moment I went out to speak to the gas company workers, I was assured that all damage would be repaired. Now why there was damage to MY drive in 2 places and the sidewalk and not on the lot where the puncture occurred, I still do not understand. Sooooooooooooo we patiently waited about 6 weeks, and many phone calls later, someone came out with a work order to only repair the sidewalk. Again, I called and was assured the driveway would be repaired. The following week, a gentleman rang my doorbell and showed me he only had a work order to repair part of the drive, the village owned parkway part of the drive. The next morning when the workers came out to pour the cement, they wondered why they were back AGAIN, and I told them they would be back, once again, if the other damaged portion of the drive was not repaired at that time. Phone calls took place and the drive was finally repaired. I was assured the damage to my lawn would also be taken care of. Oh, and they did slice my sprinkler system line while excavating. After a year of waiting, we just sodded it ourselves and hope that NiCor doesn't have to come out again. So, while I love having hot water, a dryer, heat, and other gas appliances, just don't tell customers that any damage caused by your workers "will be taken care of". because a year is just a little too long to wait. I have a business here in Naperville occupying 2 spaces for 11 years not knowing that I have 2 active gas meter and one is not being use but being charge for on the monthly service charge. Since I was not the person paying for the bills, I had no knowledge of this. Being in the service industry, I would think they would credit back the service charges since it was not being used. I spoke with Kelly first (Supervisor), explain the situation to her and got no where. Instead she being sarcastic on the phone as of THEY DON'T CARE! Best experience EVER!! I called nicor because of a gas leak...actually this was my second call. Called a few weeks ago, guy came out, couldn't find anything. Today I called because still smell gas and a technician was sent out. Kelly, a seasoned veteran with Nicor gas for 41 years, found my gas leak immediately. Although having to call for backup, she and Roberto fixed the problem pronto. They acknowledged that my safety was their first priority. I am so grateful to have had them as my techs.... amazing. Its a shame that Nicor is the only option. Terrible, terrible service! Too frustrating to write out. Do not assume starting and stopping service on line is enough - you need to call and verify multiple times. However, this will cost you at least 20 minutes of wait time and another 20 for the account specialist to figure out what you are talking about. You will then need to call back to be sure it was actually done. I'm now waiting to hear from a "manager" to dispute charges for an address I haven't lived at for over a month. This is shameful for such a large established company. It is telling that you can't find any positive reviews. If I had more time to I would report to BBB. read more

Today is Monday, Jan 9. Nicor shut off my gas on Saturday when the temp low was 5 degrees here in Illinois. They have no one available to speak to on Saturday evenings or Sundays. I had to wait until this morning to call only to find out they can not turn it back on until tomorrow. My house has no hot water and temperature reads 48* and falling. ******DOG LOVERS BEWARE!!!!!!****** My family has used this company for years without issue after moving to Hinsdale, IL. However, we recently had an outrageous incident occur. Long story short - my sweet, loving, EXTREMELY docile 9 year old yellow lab (Dog owners will attest to the unbelievably kind nature of Labrador Retrievers) barked repeatedly at a NICOR employee from our front door and approached him. Upon seeing my dog approach in a completely nonthreatening way whatsoever, the employee proceeded to PEPPER SPRAY her directly in the face. After obviously harming my dog in plain view of my shocked mother standing at the front door, the man sulked away, with NO EXPLANATION and NO APOLOGY. After tracking down the employee's partner, we were able to get the number of a supervisor and bring the horrible incident to light. Happily, the supervisor was very sympathetic and cooperative, but it did not erase the damage done by this irresponsible employee. BIG PICTURE - There was no disciplinary action taken against this man (that we know of). Please, from one dog loving customer to the next, ALWAYS keep your dogs safe when an unknown subject is on your property. My family lives in an affluent suburb of Chicago, and we never could have imagined someone would react so viciously in an area in which all dogs tend to be well behaved and well monitored. We are so lucky that our little one is okay, but only time will tell as to how she will react to strangers going forward. I have only had great experiences with Nicor. I utilize paperless and auto billing, which is easy and convenient. I also use their budget plan, so I always know what my bill will be. A couple of times I have ended up with a positive amount in my account. One phone call and they speedily sent a check for the surplus funds. They had to do some pipe work in my yard recently, so an area was torn up. Within a couple of weeks Nicor Landscaping came out, leveled the yard, added high quality sod and replaced the damaged flowers with better ones. The job looked so good my neighbor came over to get the phone number for my landscaper! I have found customer service to always be polite and efficient. Great job. read more

Called to ask why and was told they changed out our meter and the new one reads a lot faster than the old one, so they back dated the past year and charged us for the faster reading. read more

A pox upon you,Nicor Gas!! I received a nasty-gram from you regarding a meter reading(my gas meter is in my home..due to an addition built around it).I am not delinquent on my account by any means. Yet, this letter states that unless my meter can be read ASAP, I risk a service interruption.I scheduled an appointment for a Sunday reading between 8AM and noon. It is now 1PM.I tried to call Customer Service and there are no real bodies manning the phones at this hour. So,I wasted four hours on a Sunday at home! Thanks for nothing!!! I was at home until almost 3 PM,no call or person showed up.Was gone for 2 hours and no evidence of any Nicor employee having been to our home. Cannot wait to call Monday morning to express my displeasure!! Update 3/10/2008 I have been on hold for over 30 minutes...just how I wanted to spend my evening!! I have tried the website before and never gotten a response.I just LOVE awesome Customer Service!!! 45 minutes on hold...gave up and sent an e-mail. I am getting PO'd! Update 3/13/2008 E-mailed Nicor on Monday....still waiting for return call or e-mail.GRRRR! Update 3/15/2008 Recieved an e-mail-finally. I am extremely disappointed with Nicor. There is absolutely no customer service to speak of when customers need assistance and it seems that's how Nicor prefers to do business. That way, when they over bill customers and engage in unethical business practices, Nicor can simply send those customers automated notices expecting them to pay whatever price they arbitrarily deem appropriate, their service and comfort to suffer if it goes unpaid. Until recently, Nicor and its parent company excelon energy were known to cut off gas service to their customers even in the dead of winter. Thankfully, legislation has recently been put in place which prohibits this sort of abhorrent corporate greed, but we as customers still need to insist that Nicor continue to improve its insulting and disrespectful policies. I've tried for months now to get ahold of someone at Nicor to resolve what should've been a very simple issue and have been unable to do so. I assume that Nicor simply has no customer service to speak of and as I mentioned before, that appears to be the way they prefer to do business. I recently received an email notification that my gas bill was delinquent. I hadn't received a bill in months and as I mentioned, I tried to get in touch with a Nicor representative to see what the problem might be for several months--to no avail. Until around December of 2015, I had received a regular bill and paid said bill monthly without any problem whatsoever for quite some time. My bills simply stopped coming around that time with no prompting from me and since there are no representatives to speak of on their end, I was unable to pay my bill. Whenever I have tried to log into their website to pay it, a fee for my bill being delinquent was noted therein. I wasn't comfortable paying a late charge since it wasn't me who in fact dropped the ball regarding billing. That was all Nicor. I found myself unable to garner any sort of customer service or support and simply gave up and paid my bill, inappropriate late fees and all, which seems to be what they wanted all along. That's price gouging and what they've got going is in fact a monopoly. It's clear to me that because they don't have to fight for their customers, they simply don't care what they think, what their complaints are or care about working with them in any way whatsoever when a problem arises. This isn't the first time I've run into a corporation like Nicor and I'm sorry to say that it doesn't look like it'll be the last. I'm very unhappy with Nicor's entire lack of customer service. It looks to me like not having any customer service representatives on hand is simply a deliberate cost cutting measure on their part and that stinks of poor business practices. I am currently look for other companies and other potential solutions to working with an uncaring corporate giant who screws their customer base over in order to cut costs and who deliberately possesses zero customer service whatsoever. Beware of their supervisor Scott with ID# 782. He is not a responsible person. Have an appointment today and they are late. I have to work so I had to leave. I just got back to my work, and their driver called and said they had arrived. I rushed back within 25 mins, and they were gone. I called and supervisor Scott told me to wait 2 more days. I have 2 elderly living in the building and now they are freezing to die.Scott 782 does care. Scott 782 said I was late. And sure I was, because you were late. Scott 782 doesn't care about their late appointment and he doesn't care about his customer. I hope there are different company that provide gas service. Worst company ever! Seriously, due to loss of employment I fell behind on my bill. I paid the account in full and they still refuse to turn the gas back on. They said; there is another bill to be processed in 10 days, once that is paid, there is a 3 day waiting period to clear. After that, there is a 5 to 7 day period for them to return and restore service. So, if there isn't a bill due currently, and the account is at a zero balance, why not turn the gas back on? After arguing all day, I still do not have a clear answer? All I know is, this is what happens when there is a monopoly. We're forced to use this crooked company for a utility and there's nothing that can be done unless you go through some bureaucratic channel to complain. After Paying to have our Gas reconnected the customer service rep said they would reconnect on Saturday , October 28. Someone has to be there ALL day. We were there All day and no one Showed . I called at 3:30 no customer service available. Tried the Emergency line and the reply was , ' We were there at 1:30 and no one was home. At 1:30 there was 3 vehicles at the House with 2 in the Drive . Nobody knocked on the door. The Rep said i would have to call back on Monday , October 30th . Nicor seems to not care and since they have the Monopoly in This region why should they even bother . Well , maybe they Should Care since supplying as a utility . I hope that SOMEONE Does or perhaps gives them competition or No Rate hike the next time they ask for One. If it were Allowed they would Get negative 1 star rating.
