Came home to a gas scent/leak. Called Nicor the lady on the phone was super nice. Very calming (I…read morewas kinda freaked out). Service tech was here within an hour. Again another friendly voice , he explained everything. Couldn't fix it because it needed to be dug out near the meter. And the other utilities were not available to mark the yard before digging. They were all there the following day. Repairs were completed. And each of them were nice.

25 years of reliable service--and bureaucratic incompetence…read more Nicor has been supplying natural gas to our family residence for 25 years. Service has been reliable without incident. However, minus two stars in this review because every 5 years or so Nicor sends us a letter reminding us that our gas meter is in our basement (which it always has been), and that it really should be moved outside. Typically these letters admonish us for not having responded to their previous attempts to contact us. This past September we received one of these letters and I did what I always do: I called Nicor, confirmed they have our correct contact information, including email and phone number, and asked what we should do about the meter. Per usual, the representative gave me a phone number to call, and like always I called it. On this latest occasion, Nicor told me to call the Nicor Scheduling Department at 1-800-730-6114 x3. I called and spoke with Leo, who told me yes, they could arrange to have our meter moved outside. Leo told me that he would send an email to their private contractors and we should hear back from one of them in a few days. Surprise! It's been three months and we still haven't heard back. Happens every time. Then, this past October, a Nicor technician came to our house for an "inspection." She saw our gas meter in the basement and told us it should be moved outside. I explained how Nicor has told us this before, but each time we follow up with Nicor, we never hear back. She seemed surprised and told me she would follow up with her supervisor. Okay, fine. Alas, once again, we've heard nothing. I guess we can expect another letter in about 5 years.

This is actually a 3 part review: Part One - a couple of…read morereviews down mention being told they need a new boiler because of a universal part. I had a very similar experience. I was traveling overseas to see my daughter, got a call saying the heat at home wasn't working. Contractor came out and stated due to my unit being so old the manufacturer no longer made the part that failed and i'd need a new unit. So, i'm overseas and over a barrel. Told them to give me a quote, i have NO heat here. promised a quote 'tomorrow' well tomorrow ended up being 4 days later, the quote was upwards of $5000. By the time I got the quote (tuesday) I got a call from home saying the heat was working again and has since, it has been just about a year now without issue. What i believe happened, the tenant replaced the battery in the thermostat and didn't connect it properly when replacing on the wall. the contractor came and when he removed it to check, put it back on correctly. so, instead of a failed part that didn't fail and paying $5000 it was only a thermostat reset. imagine my anger at finding such a incompetent contractor being used by Pivotal. Part two: Last year i could call Pivotal for an issue and talk to someone pretty much immediately. This year, I've called a couple times for the same issue and have been on hold or a minimum of 30 minutes each time. extremely poor phone answering. If we have a problem we can't sit on our butts or 30 minutes to get to talk to someone. get more people to answer your phones. You can't say "it was a busy time" that doesn't cut it. Be prepared and bring more folks on board to work your calls, customer service and response is extremely important, especially during winter months. Part three: Related to part two - once i finally got through and was able to talk to a contractor it took a bit but they were great, they arranged the schedule and got someone to come out that evening to work on another burner. She said Pivotal uses many local contractors and some of them suck, must be talking about part one! She did say she believes you can request a specific contractor if you've had a good experience with them. I'll do that in the future. Part four - just adding this now. When the 'gas company' held these contracts response was near immediate and always very competent. I never had any issue during those times. They'd come out in the fall, inspect and clean your furnace and set you up for winter, all of that great service and response went out the window when Nstar sold the service business off of to Pivotal.

As a fellow small business owner, I feel obligated to warn others about our experience with this…read moreHVAC/R contractor. Over more than a decade of managing vendors, this has been hands down the most disappointing and unreliable company we've dealt with. We initially entrusted them with all our heating, cooling, and refrigeration needs. Unfortunately, what followed was poor communication, subpar service, and a complete lack of accountability. When issues came up--which happened frequently--they were more interested in deflecting blame than fixing the problems. Over a year, they raised our service rates by 25% without any notice or explanation, and when I reached out to ask about it, they never responded. I also requested several quotes that were never provided. As a busy business owner, I shouldn't have to chase down contractors just to give them our business. Even worse, they billed us for services that were clearly not performed. I verified this myself--twice--and one time had to bring in a third-party HVAC tech to confirm (with photo evidence) that a rooftop unit hadn't been serviced as claimed. Despite being presented with clear proof, they refused to acknowledge or resolve the issue. After nearly two months of delays and rescheduling for a correction that never happened, we finally hired another company to finish the job. Their refrigeration work was even more troubling. They miscalculated and mis-sized a walk-in freezer, resulting in a system we had to completely replace. They relied on bad measurements and passed critical sizing calculations to a supplier instead of doing it themselves. Even when I showed them accurate specs from the equipment manufacturer, they pushed back with excuses instead of taking responsibility. To make matters worse, they submitted a bid to replace our walk-in cooler and freezer with dimensions that were entirely off. Had we accepted the quote, the units would've physically not fit the space--basic measurement errors that would have led to a major installation failure. The most aggravating part of all this has been their tone: dismissive, defensive, and utterly lacking in professionalism. If you're considering this company, I urge you to think twice. When things go wrong--and they very well might--you'll be on your own. You deserve a vendor who respects your time, your business, and takes pride in getting it right.
