Our family ate here last year after the fair and it was really good; food and service. This year we ate there again after the fair and invited some friends to join us since it was their first time. It wasn't busy when we got there and it was a Saturday around 430pm. We waited a few minutes while they set up a table for us since there was 8 of us. We ordered drinks and the only drinks they had were water, tea, and lemonade. I ordered the fried shrimp dinner which comes with 2 sides. It was good and I liked the red rice. I first heard about this place from a contractor who was visiting from out of town. This is his go-to spot for soul food. The Ladson location has more menu options and my group opted for choices we hadn't seen on the other menu. I was in Charleston visiting my cousins from Alaska. I thought it would be a good idea to eat some Southern food. I wish I had made a different suggestion. Misty, our server, immediately greeted us with a smile but quickly told us what they had run out of for the day, which included waffles, black-eyed peas, and sausage, which, in her words, "means you can have gumbo, but not with sausage. The three of us decided to order the Geechi wings and the fried green tomatoes. From the menu, it appeared that the wings came with the fried green tomatoes, but when they arrived at the table, the wings were alone, and the fried green tomatoes were on a bed of grits. The wings were okay but could have been better. The grits were very seasoned for restaurant grits, but I didn't hate them. We all ordered the fried chicken with varying sides. The chicken was seasoned very well and extremely tasty. The mac and cheese was dry and hard and had no flavor. The yams were straight out of a can. The mashed potatoes were boxed and not the good box. The collard greens were dry and lacked flavor. The potato salad was decent. The red rice was red and hard and wasn't flavorful. Reminds me of my childhood. The only thing missing was my Great Aunt Lucille. I grew up in the area and southern food was a staple in our house. My grandmother lived with us and she was old school southern. She grew up in Loris, SC, which is exactly how big you'd imagine. Her sister, my Aunt Lucille, was a maniac in the kitchen. She made the best fried chicken, pork chops, etc., you could imagine. We would eat fried brim, shrimp, chicken and always great okra, red rice, collards, Lima beans on the planet. I continue to cook some of our family meals, like hoppin' john (not black-eyed peas but the real cow peas), greens and all the other great southern food I grew up on, but it just isn't the same. So when I decided to spend 6 weeks with my 81 year old mom to keep her company during COVID, we scoured the area to find good restaurants to try. My sister is a huge fan of Nigel's, so we came for lunch on a Monday. Both my mom and sister ordered the shrimp gumbo and I stole a taste. It was really good. I got the fried chicken with collards, red rice and Lima beans. Wow! What a great meal. The Lima beans were the white limas like I'm used to and the collards and red rice took me back. I honestly could have made a meal out of the sides but I also devoured the chicken. It was so good that I got a side of collards to have for dinner later. The hostess taking our order was super friendly and the food was ready in just 15 minutes. I ordered the fried shrimp platter with hushpuppies, collard greens, and potato salad. I LOVE fried shrimp, but I was extremely disappointed by Nigel's fried shrimp. Each piece was super overcooked and rubbery, and the batter was not crispy at all. It tasted like it had been sitting out all day. The hushpuppies also weren't crispy, tasting like the oil had been sucked into the skin of it. Dry on the inside with an oily, soft batter. The collard greens were very good and the potato salad was super flavorful and full of mayonnaise (which is a good thing). My boyfriend ordered the Bam's Gumbo, which was a huge serving of spicy gumbo over white rice. It had shrimp, okra, sausage, and tons of flavorful veggies. The flavor of the gumbo was great, but the shrimp in this dish was also super overcooked and chewy. Not sure if it was just an off day for Nigel's, but I won't get seafood here again. I still haven't stopped liking my fingers. I had the 2 piece fried chicken and 2 sides; green beans and red beans&rice. Wowwowow, the flavor! Everything had it and it was all unique. The only great thing was the service- Kaitlyn- very soft-spoken, but sweet, efficient and got all 7 orders correct and was apologetic that she could not serve alcohol because she was only 17. There was a bar and we are a group who tries to go to new places every Monday night (a lot of restaurants are closed on Mondays, so we are often limited) There were at least 2 other people in the kitchen who were over 18 but we could not get alcohol! Our server was actually going to call the server who just left to see if she would serve us. We declined her offer- it didn't seem fair. We are all in our 70s and 80s- not like we were trying to use underage ids! The food was actually very good- the yams in particular were to die for! My fried chicken was very good but I can't speak for the others- I think they enjoyed their burgers and fries. But we really wanted a beer- draft, bottle, anything...goes great with the menu items.
