Five Loaves in Summerville is in a historic home and has a lot of character and great atmosphere. I recently went for lunch on a Friday and there was no wait for a table. I've had several of their menu items and they have really all been great, but I really enjoyed my Cobb salad today. I split a chocolate dessert with my mom and it was really delicious! This is the third time I've been here and it's just an okay cafe. Pluses: it's in a cute house, great indoor/outdoor seating, large menu. Negatives: the food is simple and no real flavor. This place is so cute! I came in on a Sunday for brunch with a friend and we were seated right away. It appears to be in an old house that has been renovated. There is a beautiful fireplace when you walk in and smaller rooms with tables, which makes it feel very cozy. I ordered a cold brew coffee, it was okay. I also got a cup of their potato, broccoli & cheddar soup. It was. generous portion for a cup! Absolutely delicious and fresh tasting. For my entree, I ordered the roasted turkey sandwich. Sourdough bread was so soft and airy and turkey was good quality-- not overly processed or salty. It was $15 for just the sandwich (no side included), so on the pricey side. I did notice that they are able to do all their sandwiches gluten free if you need that. Server was nice and attentive, they take Blackbird for payment, which I utilized. Cute inside, good food. We ordered the special which was the biscuits with strawberry hibiscus butter, that's what sold me because in my mind I had a vision of fresh strawberries and hibiscus pieces pressed into butter with warm flaky biscuits. That was far from my reality. We got 2 lukewarm flat biscuits with what tasted like regular butter with pink food coloring in it. 3/10. After the very disappointing special, I tried to play it safe with the Monte Cristo and a side of cheesy grits. My husband got all sides because they don't have a traditional breakfast on their menu, biscuits and sausage gravy, bacon, and a side of cheesy grits. The Monte Cristo was good. It was very filling, I ended up eating half of it. Both mine and my husbands cheesy grits tasted like it had some blueberry flavor in it. The sausage and gravy was bland. The bacon was delicious. We visited Five Loaves Cafe as an impromptu visit. It's a place we'd been looking forward to trying for a while. While the building itself is nice, the atmosphere didn't feel very welcoming during our visit. When we arrived, I went to the restroom and it wasn't clean, which immediately took away from the first impression. After that, we sat at the bar and ate there. Our server was polite, but inattentive, we had to ask for utensils after our food arrived and we weren't checked on for drinks, generally we felt a little overlooked. An employee also sat next to us at the bar to eat from a takeout box during their break, which felt a bit awkward as guests. The food was average, more like a quick home style meal than something you'd expect from a restaurant you'd been looking forward to trying. The tortellini was good but tasted like pre packaged pasta and the chicken was dry. The eggplant pasta had an acidic sauce that lacked flavor the breaded eggplant also had no breading at all. The manager was friendly, but seemed to have her hands full with servers not pulling their weight. Overall, we feel a little disappointed that our experience didn't really match the expectation we had going in. read more

Five Loaves is a bewildering restaurant for me, primarily because the quality of food and service is highly unpredictable, sometimes excellent, other times mediocre at best. Example: Occasionally, the 1/2 argula salad with beets and goat cheese and candied walnuts is relatively large with chunks of cheese and plenty of beets and walnuts; other times, it is smaller with few of the aforementioned. Luckily, the service is usually spot on, but the consistency of the food is unreliable. The house is lovely and I like the wheelchair access ramp for those who need it. As visitors to the area, we loved that we could walk here from our AirBNB. This cute spot is in an old house. You can eat on the front porch, or in one of the rooms on the first floor. We went twice during the 4 days we were in town. The first time we went for drinks for my birthday and sat at the bar. The reason we went was because we saw they had a special drink made with sweet tea, in this town that claims it's the home of sweet tea. The only problem was, the drink I'd read about was for a special town promo that had ended months before I arrived. The sweet bartender said, "No worries! The owner is my best friend," as she called to get the drink recipe. My drink was made with vodka that was infused with sweet tea and was amazing! The second time we went we ate lunch on the porch before we left town to go home. The service this time was a little slower, but still good, given it was the lunch rush. There were plenty of plant-based vegan options for me and my daughter enjoyed her meal too. This is a great little locally-owned spot. Highly recommended! I might have sat in instead of taking out if I'd realized what a splendid-looking house this was in. It was busy, but not packed on a beautiful weekend day. I got a salad to go with some crusted and fried tofu, and it included numerous candied nuts in addition to the various vegetables and was quite a filling salad. It was also certainly on the pricey side, and they packed up my single salad in a giant bag for some reason, which was a tad wasteful. Options for special dietary needs were plentiful. I didn't have quite as good a meal here as at the other location but I think it's worthwhile to have a place in this area thatis both healthy and local. read more

I wasn't quite what I was expecting and when I ordered a replacement (white balsamic) I was informed there was a 50 cent surcharge. For only 50 cents I just paid rather than arguing. The soup was not that tasty kinda bland and not as creamy as I thought it would be. The tortellini again bland. Lastly we got the kids waffle (which is 1/2 of a Belgian waffle. The batter/waffle was good. We got it topped with blueberries (another 50 cent surcharge) and whipped cream (another 50 cent surcharge) when it came they forgot the whipped cream. It's in an old house, giving a relaxing coffee house feel, and I loved the bright artwork on the walls. Before I sat down, I wanted to hang here as a respite from our errand-running.
