On a recent business trip to Austin where my wife accompanied me, we had a free evening to enjoy and explore this eclectic city. After dinner and drinks with a group from my company, we headed back to our hotel in downtown. Though, after some thought, we decided to venture out again for a late night dessert and beverage. We found Nightcap from a quick Yelp search for desserts and saw it was open until 11pm. It was about a 12 minute drive from our hotel, the Van Zandt, in downtown, giving us just enough time to make the trek. Once we arrived, the dark decor welcomed us right in... as did the hostess. We settled into a small table next to the window to enjoy the view. We each ordered beverages as well as desserts. I ordered the 'Old Fashioned Doughnut' and she ordered the 'Chocolate Sponge Cake.' While they each had decidedly opposite tastes - one a bit tart and the other super sweet (respectively), they were each over the top delicious. What a fun place!!! I celebrated my birthday here and reserved the whole patio! We had a few servers that were so fun! I enjoyed the atmosphere! I had a donut cake that was heavenly - the cheese board was on point...& my most favorite item on the menu are the pretzels! They occupied around 60 of us...and did a wonderful job! Do NOT come here with a group. Terrible experience. We rented out the front patio for a group of 60 people, with dinner and cocktails. The cocktails were mediocre at best, served in small plastic cups, and by the end of the night, one of the three cocktail options "ran out". The food quality was decent. However, large group option that would supposedly feed 60 people, ended up feeding only HALF of our group. The food was served "family style" , with three large plates of food that could've maybe fed 2 families. At $60 per person, I expected a full serving of food, with at least one full sized cocktail. Instead, I ate one scoop of mediocre risotto and had terrible "mini" drinks. When the group confronted the event coordinator, she refused to take responsibility for misleading our group regarding the portion sizes. In order to feed the rest of our group, we ended up having to pay more. It was extremely disappointing and frustrating. Everyone felt gypped and left hungry by the end of the night. read more

The burger " special" (?) was $16.00 with any add ons starting at $3.00 per add on. There was not even a description of the kind of meat these $$$ burgers are made of ? And the hostess was less than hospitable, not letting us sit in the bar area saying it was all booked up but actually was not? What happened in the last few months ? This place is incredible! For drinks, dessert, dinner, and now they even have brunch.. you really can't go wrong at Nightcap. You would be pressed to find a boring plate on the menu, every dish is unique with an interesting food-science type twist. Dehydrated crepes sprinkled over the lemon ricotta pancakes.. who thinks of that evil goodness? The steak and eggs are out of this world if you happen to make it in for brunch. If you have allergies, beware of this place. I asked the waitress to confirm there was nothing with peanuts in any of the dishes being served at my company party. She assured me there was nothing. Mere moments later, I bit into brussel sprouts sprinkled with peanuts. First - not two items I would expect to go together, second - it was so dark I couldn't see the peanuts, third - there was no labeling on the buffet table where I picked up the lethal dish. Needless to say, I ended what was supposed to be a very special night, in the ER. We came here during halloween and it was amazing. Donavan and the entire staff took care of us and their recommendations on what to get was delicious. We had the brussel sprouts, quail, the spread, charred chicken, grilled cheese, octopus and cocktails. Each of the items was well put together and the components of the dish wether the corn, olives etc tasted great and complimented each other. I hesitate when the food is offered has multiple components in it but everything here was consistent and well tasted great. Normally, I cant say I remember the entire all the ingredients in a dish when they put serious consideration and love into all the parts in a dish but hey it was amazing. The best compliment is that I will go back , recommend friends and make it a staple in going out. I was expecting a bit more for the price. Brunch portions are small and left me wanting more. They were nice enough to make me one pancake -- which was pretty darn good. They are great at plating their food though and everything came out looking very lovely. Service wasn't super great. I think she may have been hungover or something and was super confused when I asked if the bartender could create me a mocktail. I think this place has a ton of potential and is just in the growing pains phase. We went twice and loved the theme, the remodel, and the cheeky named desserts. The milk and cookies were excellent. Unfortunately, everything else I ordered was either mediocre our downright not tasty. The cocktails were lacking- certainly not the delicate balance of flavors I would expect. The dessert wine selection is poor. And the desserts (other than milk & cookies) were frankly pretty bland. Just didn't justify the price. The adult shakes were strong but extremely small for the price. Almost laughable actually. We were surprised and disappointed there weren't any fancy adult coffee or hot chocolate drinks on the menu (hello baileys mocha?) They offer French press coffee but no decaf? Desserts were fine. You know the weird kind..Powders and black peppered/herby, goat cheese ice creams accents etc. Nothing rich and decadent or crave able. I would LOVE to see something fun and different here to make it a go-to for date night, friend celebrations, birthdays, engagements etc...cotton candy rimmed martini? sparklers on a fancy Godiva mousse cake? Gorgeous to die for shakes the likes of Black Tap Craft in NYC? Any donut tower, flambé banana something?? We have been looking forward to trying this place since their opening and finally decided to give it a try. We got there early, not long after they opened, so we had our choice of seating and chose to sit outside. The music was loud, but we didn't mind. Our waitress came out to greet us and give us some water and after telling her that this was our first time, what did she recommend for drinks, she didn't really seem to want to help too much. She gave some suggestions, but definitely wasn't "passionate" about anything. Got our drinks, I can tell you that I was surprised at the very small size of the Grasshopper drink, but it was very good. My cucumber drink (which the waitress recommended as the best on the menu), was not good. By this time that music had gone off and it was not super quiet. When our waitress came back out and asked how everything was, my boyfriend said that we lost our music and she just said, it will come back on and turned around and walked away. It never did come back on. Thinking that we would enjoy ourselves more if I was enjoying my drink, I ordered a root beer float and some more water (it was hot out there) and the pretzel, as we were getting hungry and our waitress seemed to be a little annoyed that we didn't come there to eat and made us feel as if we couldn't be there to just drink. The pretzels were very good, but we never did get any more water to wash it down. My boyfriend is encouraging me to stay there and eat now, since he is getting hungry, so I give in, since the pretzels were good. We moved inside, our waitress grabbed our stuff and hurried in and we had to follow and "find her" as she was in a great hurry to get in there and not wait for us. We sat down, ordered dinner and when the food came out we both started laughing. I am not kidding the portions are SO SMALL that we thought it was a joke. My boyfriends hanger steak was very good, my chicken was ok, but was so salty, I could barely eat it. After we got the bill, I was no longer laughing, $26 for my teeny tiny piece of chicken and $29 for about 5 pieces of sliced hanger steak. I don't see how they will be able to stay in business with the prices and the portions and they need to find some help that actually wants to help the guests. I could not get over the feeling that we were annoying our waitress by just being there and it didn't make me feel very comfortable at all. We wanted to love it, but unfortunately after our experience, which seems to be on par with the majority of other reviews on here, we will not be back, as this seems to be the norm. Unfortunately, I noticed that the owner of Nightcap responded to one of the reviews that loved the place, but doesn't seem to want to address any of the people the gave their money, but didn't have such a great experience. Tasty, sort of, but tiny portions (I mean TINY!), and absolutely no gluten-free options or accommodations at all. Didn't someone tell them this is AUSTIN, land of Paleo-esque foodies? I'll generally make a brunch exception to my clean eating diet for something really good and special, but this wasn't it. It's like they didn't even try. Food arrived cold. We were one group of 5, and the restaurant was empty except for maybe 3-5 other parties of 4 or less. So basically it was a ghost town, and ZERO excuse for food to arrive cold. Bloody Mary was also an embarrassment. Look, if you're going to put a Bloody-tini on the menu, then call it what it is - don't call it a Bloody Mary if it's not served with AT LEAST some decent olives. Won't be back. AMAZING FOOD, DRINK, STAFF and ENVIRONMENT!!!! I have been a permanent fixture at the bar, the booths, the outdoor furniture (which is very comfortable, btw) because I choose Nightcap to bring friends, clients, the occasional date, etc. I have been dining here since it has opened, and I think I have tried everything on the menu, both sweet and savory. I am never disappointed with the quality and presentation! The staff is very attentive and responsive to your needs/requests. I have also called numerous times to let them know, last minute, that I was planning on bringing a party of 6, and they accommodated with no hesitation. The atmosphere is very classy, yet many diners, including myself, wear the "Standard Austin Outfit" Shorts, T-Shirts and flip flops. However, I have also dined there on a date where I dressed up a bit more. Either way, I've always felt accepted. The music is a plus too. Many times I have found myself and my group boppin' heads and casually singing along to some of the classics played here. Bottom line ... If you are looking for amazing sweet, savory, or sweet and savory dishes, and amazing drinks made by their mixologists, then look no further than Nightcap on the corner of Pressler and West 6th!!! Romantic modern atmosphere with a clever and innovative drink list- tried the salt and pepper (chocolate cake) and although we loved the ice cream and a few other components, the chocolate cake itself wasn't anything to rave about. When I lived in SF there was a place called Candybar (RIP) which served dessert and cocktails. I only managed to go a couple of times but I LOVED that place. Creative desserts & drinks, fun atmosphere, nice decor. So my hopes were high for Nightcap. Stopped by for an after dinner drink a while back, and the dessert and drinks part of the concept (I think that was the original concept) seems lost. The drinks were competent, but in a town with a lot of what I'd call "upscale hipster" cocktail bars & eateries nothing stood out. Can't speak to brunch or dinner. read more

Had a couple friends in town from Houston and were looking for a new place to grab brunch outside of our usual spots. Remember seeing Nightcap on the way home from work and figured we would walk over on a Sunday morning. Weather was unseasonably cool that morning so we snagged a table on their outdoor patio. We started with several breakfast cocktails. My Bloody Mary martini was delightful. The mix was very tasty and had just the right amount of heat as our waitress had advised. My girlfriend had a gin & st. Germaine cocktail that she said was quite delicious (and our guests also confirmed & agreed). For food, we got matching entrees of the steak & eggs as well as the salmon rillette. I ordered the steak medium rare and eggs basted (which most people in Texas have no idea and just give me a blank stare). Both were cooked absolutely flawless. The dish, while not the biggest portion, was well seasoned and overall excellent. The salmon was great presentation and tasted just as good as it looked. After eating, we relaxed on the patio for a little bit and enjoyed a few more cocktails. Unlike a lot of servers that check out after the food plates are locked up, our waitress stayed on point & attentive and ensured our drinks were always full. Overall, I consider Nightcap as one of the best brunch options not just in the area but also in all of Austin. When I first arrived I loved the atmosphere and was excited to try a new place. But DO NOT book a group reservation here! For a large group we paid 120$ with the promise of 2 cocktails, 4 glasses of wine, appetizers, and grilled chicken and risotto. Sounds great right?! Too bad I was only served 2 pieces of bread, 1 gross cocktail, and a scoop of risotto before they declared that was all of the cocktails and food they would make. Although we told them our group size far in advance and had arranged food and drinks accordingly to this number, they failed to deliver. Everyone was disappointed in the fact that they ran out of food before half the party had even eaten and the staff refused to bring out anymore food or drinks even though a majority did not receive what we had paid in advance for. They are completely incompetent in servicing groups and did nothing to accommodate the situation, despite it being their fault for not making fulfilling their end of the deal. Bad customer service. 120$ for 2 pieces of bread and a drink.... I could have gotten a great meal else where for that money. read more

I wanted to like this place, but it didn't do it for me. Went at 7pm on a Wednesday. The place was absolutely dead. I'm talking 4 other people in the entire restaurant. Not a good sign. We asked for a drink menu, and a full 15 minutes later the waitress had still not returned. She finally comes back, and hands my date and I each a complimentary shot of Deep Eddy Vodka - which was nice. I assume it is because she feels bad about the service and is ready to finally take our order, but she gives us the shots and promptly walks off. We finally had to say "Uhhh, can we order our drinks now?" to which she replies "Oh yeah!". Pretty ridiculous. Can't speak much for the food, as we only had a charcuterie board appetizer, but this cute little house of a restaurant feels like a waste, as it had absolutely no vibe, customers, or customer service! Birthday celebration with my family. Super decorations, the house is dark purple, so very cool. They have a small bar but fully stocked, bartenders are very friendly and they seem to like their jobs. We had the chicken and several sides which were all fantastic. The presentation was excellent, waiter did a super job, and we tried 5 desserts that were all yummy. Super area outside for large parties. The owner checked on us several times. They have a party room that would be great for all types of parties. Parking in the back is free Valet.
