When I want something quick and fresh for lunch, I like to stop by Nijiya for their chirashi bowls. May not look like a lot, but it is quite filling. I've tried the various chirashi versions, and they've all been good. Prices range from about $13 - $20 for the different versions. If not the chirashi, they also have other items like sushi, sandwiches, and other rice bowls.

Took me a while to find this gem and even longer to leave them a stellar review! Small little Asian grocery store with some of my fav snacks for the go. Since the past 2 years, it has also been my regular (almost once a week) lunch pick up spot. They have Fresh house made sushi and other cold lunches in the back wall. Lots of variety of sushi, noodles, meats and veggies. I usually get the tuna roll, which is fresh and delish. The service is fast (perfect for a work day lunch pick up). I'll be back!

Great little Japanese market with a solid selection of groceries, snacks, and ready‑to‑eat food. The sushi and chirashi bowls are fresh and tasty, and I always find fun snacks, desserts or specialty ingredients I can't easily get elsewhere. Everything feels good quality and reasonably priced for what you get. Staf,

*sigh* Our go-to rice producer, Koda Farms, which grew Heritage Medium Grain Rice for Kokuho Rose made the decision to retire after 97 years and three generations. While their operations are being blended into that of Western Foods of Woodland, CA, there is no guarantee that the quality will be the same, especially since the Dos Palos location is winding down. This is forcing us to try other brands and types of rice to find one that we like until the next crop of rice comes out. So that brought us to Nijiya. I was hoping for a "rice expert" but the three employees that I spoke to all stated that they made their purchasing decisions based on price. While we were there, we also took a look at the prepared Grab n Go section and bought: California Roll & Inari - 4 - The rice seemed a little firm on the California Roll. The Inari was okay. Kani & Ikura Inari - 4 - To me, the flavor of the Ikura overwhelmed the Snow Crab. I probably would have enjoyed just the Ikura with the Inari. Edamame Croquette - 5 - After a light drizzling of Tonkatsu Sauce, the Croquettes really came to life. Grilled Mackarel - 2 - The fish was dry and bland. Very unusual for an oily fish. The Grab n Go selection appeared to offer different flavors from that of the San Jose store. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Both stores were clean and had a wide variety of items in a relatively small space.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

My previous review I meant shiso plant starters, lol. My kids would come here every Monday after school, and now I come with my youngest on Mondays. (older is fine - away at college!) - my kid likes the california rolls with spicy mayo, and i like the triangles, whatever they are lol. Unfortunatley lately they haven't had the california rolls with spicy mayo, so I asked an employee if they carried that mayo - she found some for me that might be a good replacement on the days they only have plain CA rolls. She was very sweet and helpful. They've been out of Coke zero AND the Japanese version for a few weeks now. Hope they get it soon. Anything you grab in the back sushi area is delicious and fresh. The selection is better the earlier you go. Yum!

3.5 STARS Date: Thursday, December 19th, 2024 Time: around 7:15pm *Shizuoka San Matcha ($9.99) *Organic Matcha Culinary ($6.49) A friend and I were waiting for a table next door. Decided to wander into Nijiya cuz why not?! [[HIGHLIGHT]]This location is on the smaller side compared to others I've gone to.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Didn't see any snacks / candy I wanted to buy, which is rare for me. Ended up getting some matcha since I've been on a matcha kick. Figured it would be cheaper this way. [[HIGHLIGHT]]A fine way to distract myself and browse if waiting for hotpot next door.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] REVIEW #3658

I love this place. I came for one or two things such as shabu shabu and sesame seeds, and left with so much more! I'll be back again. Parking was easy. The checkout cashier was friendly and efficient. The store was well organized and stocked. Excellent experience on a Saturday morning.

Great spot to grab some ready-made Japanese food and sushi and some groceries! [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a small market but has mostly everything you need for a quick stop.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I loved their selection of food but only downside was the hot food was all refrigerated, so you would need a way to heat it up if you wanted to eat it right away. I loved the chirashi bowl though, the fish was so fresh and sushi rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned.

Looks good but ended up getting smaller selection in other case

Nice Japanese market. Hadn't been in a long time. Went mostly for their ready to go foods for dinner. Got lots and hubby and I were happy not have make anything for dinner. Got everything I wanted except fruit selection is kind of small and outside the front doors

Nijiya Market has some rare and fun items you do not see in most Asian stores. We found jujubes, Suntory whiskey, and Ichiran Ramen. Prices are high but worth it for these finds. The ramen section has a guide that is helpful and the selection is big. They also have pasta seasonings like spaghetti cod roe and tuna mayo. There is a fresh vegetable and meat section with good quality choices. Outside they sell nijiya and myoga plants and have fun toy machines too. We love this market and will definitely be back to pick up more ramen.

Unacceptable quality control. Sold moldy fruit meant for my kids…read more We decided to order a case of strawberries from Baby Dragon Seafood specifically because they advertise them as organic. As a parent, I'm always trying to find healthier, chemical-free options for my kids to avoid the health risks associated with conventional store brands like Driscoll's. We thought paying a premium for a case of organic berries here would be the safer, better route for our family. Unfortunately, it was a massive disappointment. As soon as we opened the order, we found that a large portion of the strawberries were already soft, spoiled, and covered in fuzzy grey mold (see attached photos). Instead of a healthy snack for my children, we received contaminated produce that is completely unsafe to eat. Selling moldy fruit to families who are intentionally trying to buy high-quality, organic food is unacceptable. They clearly aren't inspecting their inventory before it goes out the door. Will not be buying produce here again.

They said "22 minutes, flesh side down, no seasoning". I pushed back a bit " olive oil and salt and pepper, right?" The fishmonger looked at me dubiously. The natural oil from the fish is all that is needed. He also recommended to cover the pan and cut the 1.5 pound piece into two prior to cooking and possibly throw some green onion on top. Dinner that.night was amazing. I used a shallow dutch oven, and a touch of pepper and flaky salt, I then threw on top of the fish some green onion and a tangle of fresh green beans untrimmed. Those green beans, I topped with a little seafood seasoning mix I made which is basically Kosher salt, thyme, cumin, garlic salt, smoked paprika - The seasoning only touched the skin side. I also topped with a cut lemon and left it covered on low heat- ( my stove runs hot) . I dod not touch it for 22 minutes. This was definitely the best thing that I have ever made in my kitchen. Prep time 3 minutes- I have also purchased fresh salmon at the farmers market but was wowed by the Char. Perfect instructions were given and I followed them- mostly. No fishy taste, no smell, perfectly easy to clean. The delicate flesh held together snd was moist yet flaky. The prices are decent and certainly worth it for the quality and freshness. High end restaurant quality! Even if you are a gourmet cook, do less. i love produce and fish in it's most natural state . Don't guild the lily with anything you buy from this vendor. Ask for prep instructions from the experts and you will not be disappointed!! Thanks guys!!

This market may not be your #1, but it gets my respect…read more You see. I haven't been to a large supermarket on the Peninsula that's as well stocked as this place. Not even its siblings. All other supermarkets, except for maybe Fresco in South Bay and Berkeley Bowl in East Bay, have a niche, and you're going to be inconvenienced if what you want to make is outside of that focus. This large market had a dedicated aisle to Latino products, one for Japanese, Central/Eastern European, Southeast Asian - mostly for Filipino and Indonesian products, an aisle EACH! Now, as you may know, Hashi has taken over the market following the retirement of the previous boss under Marina. Apparently the kids don't want to take over haiyaaaa. Not much has changed but necessary renovations are planned, though unfortunately, the European section was down to some canned drinks and Slavic sauerkraut during my recent visit. Other reviews have mentioned how cold it gets inside. During my visit, it was all right, about as same temperature as outside. They don't have a heating system, I guess. Now I understand that Hashi has a focus on Japanese products, but given the physical size and history of this market location, I do wish that its Japanese branding doesn't come at the expense of everything else, especially since there are major competition nearby and we don't need a rat race to the bottom.

Not too familiar with the area, we were unaware of the ownership change. Crabs at $7.99/lb. seem like a reasonable price, vegetables looked fresh. Meats and seafood are priced a little lower than other Asian markets. I was excited to find some sesame candy which reminded me of childhood snack, however there is no expiration date on the good looking box ($4.99). The food court area is being remodeled, we walked around it carefully. The crabs we steamed last night for dinner were pretty good. Today I tried the sesame candy and was very disappointed. As soon as I opened the nicely wrapped candy, the aroma of rancid sesame oil hit me and it tasted bitter.....basically the candy is inedible. I understand it may not be the fault of the market because this item was imported. The lack of expiration date should have given me a warning, my fault. Needless to say we will not be rushing back to shop here anytime soon, hopefully they do a better job on quality control going forward.
