TLDR: Worth the wait. The noodles are excellent. This is a different kind of Japanese Noodle Place. Not soup-based, but noodles barely coated in a simple soy infused oil. SPEEDY SERVICE While daunting in appearance, the long line out in front moves surprisingly quickly - only 12 minutes for us to get seated! Friendly enthusiastic attentive staff. Given the queue, they really move you through here in a friendly sort of way, so it's not a place to sit and linger after consuming your meal. There's tons of dessert places just outside.. =) Inside you'll find airy high ceilings and a busy energetic vibe with music that is almost kinda loud! Tables are pretty close together to accommodate everyone. Understandable given the constant lines outside. We came here on a late afternoon midweek. We ordered the: CHASU RICE Appearing almost immediately after ordering, you get a good sized bowl of your basic bits of pork belly-infused Japanese rice - tender and most throughout. It could use a tiny pinch of salt to dial it in, but it worked well with the Aburasoba. Generous serving - enough for both of us. ORIGINAL ABURASOBA オリジナル油そば Aburasoba basically means "oil noodles". Not "oily" in a bad sense, but supple and smooth and superb! With this you get two pieces of 1/8" thick chashu, bamboo shoots, green onions, and nori (seaweed.) The star of the show here are the noodles - supple, al-dente with every bite and such an delightful texture. Served warm. Suggested for first timers, I split this with my light-eating wife. Between us, and the side of rice it was enough for a light lunch after a big breakfast we had earlier. I definitely look forward to coming back here at the first opportunity. Worth the wait.

I've heard amazing things about Kajiken, and it definitely lived up to the hype! I tried the soboro aburasoba, and it was absolutely delicious - so flavorful! The keema curry arubasoba was also tasty if you like more of a curry taste - just a tad spicy, but nothing too bad. Our waitress was very nice - service is great. There was no line when we went on a Wednesday for lunch, but dinner & weekends usually almost always have one. I would return for the soboro arubasoba!

Does not take reservations but is also pretty big for seating. Highly recommend the "top 1" Very nice flavours and the vinegar just makes it taste so much more flavourful. It does feel a bit crowded and parking is rough.

4.5/5! The karaage was nice and tender. The tofu tasted good but wish it was the agedashi type, which I think would elevate the dish! Homura aburasoba was the highlight of the meal. The noodles were nice and bouncy, and the sauce, ground pork, and garnishes were a perfect harmony.

Food good, service was really bad today. Like empty tables buys food came out 30 min after ordering. Dirty cups. Food came out apart and no one checks in on us

Great chewy noodle texture and very flavourful!! Would definitely come again. There was a line but short wait for the outdoor seating. Chill ambience, the space between tables was reasonable but you could clearly hear your neighbor's conversations at very loud volume.. we overheard a very spicy and shocking conversation from the table adjacent to us. At first it seemed like a lot of onions and chives but after mixing it was a good ratio of sauce noodles and toppings. Friend ordered the mozzarella cheese add-on topping and it was literally just a little bowl of the shredded mozzarella cheese you can get at the grocery store... so we joked that next time we can just bring our own cheese (BYOC) I ordered the homura aburasoba (spicy minced pork, green onions, bamboo shoots, seaweed, fish powder, chives with ajitama (soft-boiled eggs marinated in soy sauce, ramen egg)). Highly recommend this place to anyone who likes noodles !!

Located in San Mateo I would rate this place a 3/5 Interior design is nice an beautiful. Service was okay most likely due to the large amount of customers coming in and out. A lot of the workers are busy so you have to flag them down and they rarely come check in on you Homura ABURASOBA 7/10 Chicken Marage 7/10 The food here definitely is packed with flavor but the portion sizing is significantly smaller than Elk Grove location. JD Big Back tip: if you get seated near the door you may be interested in bringing a jacket because it does get very windy and cold. Also if you want a spoon you will have to go to the front to request for one.

Forgot to take a photo before mixing, but it did look very aesthetic. Ordered the wagyu roast beef abura soba with raw egg yolk off delivery. I've seen the line in person and it's normally very long. With the yogurt, and other mix ins, it was very flavorful and creamy. The noodles are great texture and they give a big portion. I recommend this and want to try it in person

We arrived on a Sunday at 6:20pm and waited 10 minutes for a table. Meanwhile our order was taken so after sitting down our bowls were served within 5 minutes. Besides inside seating they also have counter seating and outdoor seating. They offer 9 different dry ramen variations plus a monthly special. You can add additional toppings for an extra charge. They also serve appetizers and rice bowls. It's a very casual dining experience with Japanese pop music playing in the background. The dry ramen is a very hearty meal with various condiments on the table including garlic, sesame seeds, chili, sesame oil and vinegar to adjust to your taste. The noodles were cooked al dente. I tried both the original and the Homura aburasoba and liked them both. The spicy pork wasn't spicy at all and the char siu was very tender. Had a bit of leftover and took it home.

One of my favorite restaurants in DTSM! Kaijken specializes in aburasoba, which I had no idea about before I found this place. Aburasoba is brothless ramen that instead uses a mix of oils and sauces to create a savory sauce. I've tried almost everything on the menu and my favorite is the Homura Aburasoba (their #1 seller), which comes with minced pork and a raw egg yolk. The pork and egg yolk create a rich, creamy sauce that pairs with the chewy ramen noodles. If I'm feeling something lighter/less saucy, I get the original aburasoba, which comes with chashu instead of the minced pork. I've also tried all the various karaage, takoyaki, and gyoza. Nothing insanely special, but great to pair with the ramen. It's a small spot and there's usually a wait, but they do also have an outdoor seating area that's open when the weather allows. Plan to wait in line if you're going on a weekend! The servers are very friendly and attentive, I always appreciate never having to ask for a water refill here.

Came for dinner with my girlfriends on a Thursday at 7pm-- there will be a line outside but it moves fairly quickly. They ask for your order while you're waiting in line so that when you are seated, the food comes out very quick. The inside of the restaurant was packed but it didn't seem too loud! I got the waygu roast beef aburasoba! This is the first time I tried the brothless ramen & it definitely was super delicious! The egg mixed in makes it super creamy. My bowl was seasoned great! I would definitely come back again to try some appetizers. My friend who ordered the unagi loved her bowl except there were large bones that were hard to pick out.

Fast, delicious and filling!! Their original was super umami, and the portion sizes are pretty big. I loved their marinated egg as a replacement for the raw egg yolk. The service is super fast, we got seated right away and our order came out in minutes. They have a lot of seating too. Great place to go to in San Mateo!

One of my favorite noods places in the bay area! I've never tried dry ramen before Kajiken, but now it's one of my go-tos when I'm craving something saucy and carb-y and delicious! Sometimes the line can get long, especially during weekend rush hour, so I recommend going a little before they open and snagging a table early. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, casual nice. Ive tried their top 3 most popular ones, and they're all delicious! Highly recommend dining in as they have vinegar and spicy sauces and garlic chips you can add to your bowl. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you stop by on a day there's no wait!

    Ask the Community - Kajiken

Is this restaurant dog friendly if outdoor seating is available?

We have a dog-friendly patio at our Kajiken Elk Grove location. Feel free to bring your pup!

    Wait time on sunday?

Depends on how many in your part, approx. 15-20 mins for 2-3 ppl. longer wait for bigger party.

We are planning to arrive Friday 1:30pm. Will that be ok? Do they stop taking order at certain time? (it shows lunch time until 2pm. )

That should be fine as the line moves quite fast as they hand over the tap to the customers once they finished for the next table. They probably stop the line once the clock strikes.

Can we get the yolk on the ramen again or are they still just putting boiled egg?

You can get raw! I went last week, my husband had his w/ raw egg yolk and I had mine w/ poached egg.

Do they take reservations? If not, what has the wait time been for Friday (non-holiday) early lunchtime (11am)?

No reservations. Turnovers are fast. If you come early as they are just opened, it's usually not bad.

    Is there outdoor seating now?

Unfortunately not the last few times I was there

Will it be possible to visit with 6 people if we wait in line?

Yes. We had a party of 8 are we were able to get a table. Let the host know you have 6 and he will arrange your table.

Are you open on Labor Day?

    Yes we are!

Is this place okay with serving large parties (10-12)?

    It's gonna be tight.

    Do they take apple pay?

    Yup!

    Do they do take out?

They HIGHLY don't recommend it, but will if you insist.

    Do the noodles have buckwheat?

While Soba does refer to buckwheat noodles, most Aburasoba uses ramen noodles actually. Chuuka Soba (Chinese Soba) was the old name for Ramen in Japan which is where the name comes from.…

Can the mushroom aburasoba be made without garlic and onions?

Hi Liza, thank you for your question. Unfortunately, it can not be made without garlic. Onions can be removed.

Does Kajiken offer take out options?

No they don't. We asked the server and she said the only way would be to order an extra bowl with your dine in order. Then, you could get a takeout container to take it to go.

    Do you have food delivery?

Is it open today during President's day holiday?

Yes! We are open on President's Day from 11-2pm then 5-9pm!

Does this place offer takeout? I see it as a feature on Google/Yelp but there's no phone number.

    No takeout yet.

When is the best day/time to go to avoid line as much as possible?

    Weekday lunch.

    Any vegan items?

    Mushroom aburasoba $14.50

Is there a digital waitlist or do you just have to wait in line?

It seems like you just have to wait in line.

The menu carries such a large diversity of items to cater different soup/rice plate tastes. The sukiyaki was a little more on the sweeter side and wish there was a little more umami balance, but the regular bowl was very filling. The table got the shrimp tempura set, the tonkatsu broth, and the curry katsu soup, and every item was tasty and the plating very thoughtful. I'm especially impressed by how child friendly this place was. I got the same vibes as marufuku, with the gashapon machine for the kids meal, the high quality bibs available for kids and adults, the child bowls and utensils, and the water cubs with lids and bendy straws. Both locations are great, but the menu at udon mugizo gives it a sizable edge. Great spot, and absolutely cannot wait to come back.

There was an employee making the udon fresh in-house with a machine in a large-windowed room along the hallway to the bathroom. Service was great. Our waiter was friendly and went through the menu thoroughly along with what's popular here and what he personally recommended. He also refilled our waters without prompting. Our food arrived quickly after we ordered. Karaage - 6 large pieces of moist, juicy, well-seasoned chicken. The batter was crispy and not oily. I would've liked there to be a little more dipping sauce. I would get this again. Tonkotsu udon deluxe - chashu was tender, broth was perfectly pork-bone-milky, udon had a nice chewy al dente texture, egg was perfectly cooked with that gelatinous yolk and well-marinated. The texture of the kakuni (pork belly) was a bit too dry/well-done for my taste, so I think I'll just get the regular tonkotsu next time. Niku udon - larger bowl/portion than the tonkotsu, even though both were regular size. The fish broth was nicely blight, udon was the same great al dente texture as the one in tonkotsu dish, beef was not chewy. Mentai cream sauce udon - akin to a Japanese carbonara pasta, the sauce was very garlicky and had a kick of spice from the spicy cod roe. All of the elements came together well, from the crispy tempura bits, to the richness of the sauce, to the crunch from the green onions. In terms of flavor this was my favorite dish out of the 3. This dish can get a bit heavy as you keep eating, so I would recommend you take some home for another meal or split with someone else. All 3 noodle dishes were solidly good, so I don't think you can go wrong! My father couldn't name a favorite dish; he just says it depends on what you're in the mood for. My mother thinks everything was a bit too salty for her taste, though; she would personally rank the niku udon the best for the value and salt content and non-heaviness, followed by the mentai cream udon, and then tonkotsu last. She said she would rate this place 4.5/5. Overall, I would definitely return again to try other dishes, like the curry udon that my waiter highly endorsed, or one of the set meals (like the unagi rice bowl with tempura and steamed veggies and mini udon).

Cloud 9 was especially memorable and is my favorite, served with a little bubble on top that looked like a cloud. Both cocktails tasted as good as how they looked. Tokie's Special Roll: a tempura shrimp roll topped with tuna and tobiko, which had a nice combination of texture. Their house sauce was a surprise Bill's Special: made with fresh salmon, cucumber, avocado, and tobiko. Very light and fresh. Hand rolls: very well made, we ordered soft shell crab and spicy hamachi. I honestly prefer soft shell crab more, as it's very creamy and crunchy - also one of their popular dishes. Glazed chicken wings: another popular, very flavorful and worth the hype The restaurant wasn't crowded when we came, service was quick, I will recommend it to my friends

No matter what you order, you really can't go wrong--everything on the menu is consistently amazing. The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming, which makes every visit feel like you're coming back home. Diane and Victor are incredible hosts and truly make the experience special. I've known them for a long time, and Victor never fails to greet me with a shot of sake--something I always look forward to every time I walk in. Their rolls are absolutely to die for, but as someone who appreciates traditional Japanese flavors, I always find myself going back to the sashimi. It's fresh, clean, and really lets the natural flavors shine. If you're looking for great food, great vibes, and even better people, this place is it.

The sushi chefs really know what they're doing and are incredibly kind and welcoming. I also really appreciate how attentive they are without being intrusive. They seem to know when to give you privacy and space and when to interact and engage with you. They're always friendly and working with a smile, which makes the experience even more enjoyable. This is definitely a place I'll be coming back to, and I'll happily use any special occasion as an excuse to return. I've already recommended Sushi Maruyama to several coworkers and friends, and I can easily see it becoming a go-to spot for me.

Seeing an all-Japanese kitchen staff and sushi chefs immediately gave us good expectations--unlike a lot of Instagram-viral sushi spots run by non-Japanese owners where we've been disappointed before. It's not a flashy, high-end fine dining restaurant, but rather a clean, welcoming neighborhood sushi joint. The overall quality is very solid: sticking to the basics, well-executed, and super fresh with zero fishiness. We ordered the 8-piece Chef's Omakase (which came with a complimentary Tamago for $63--prices seem to vary depending on the daily fresh catches listed on their daily specials board). Most people seem to order the omakase and then add extra dishes. We also ordered: * Hamachi Kama * Deep-Fried Baby Octopus (wonderfully tender and delicious!) * Salmon Tacos * Miso Soup We paired everything with a dry, clean sake that complemented the sushi perfectly. The service was exceptionally friendly throughout our meal. While it's not a "mind-blowing" fine-dining experience, finding a reliable, fresh, and well-priced sushi spot like this in the area is a huge win. We'll definitely be coming back whenever we're nearby!
