Not really my first choice when it comes to AYCE Sushi, but it is definitely the most convenient to get to whenever I get that craving. 5/5 option for AYCE sushi! I absolutely love sushi, and Nijiya absolutely delivers for an AYCE option. It's not as high quality as a nicer a la carte place, but it's really great for unlimited. One of the pros that puts this above some of the other places is that they include yellowtail in their sashimi options for dinner - this is the first AYCE where I've seen that. They also include spider rolls in their dinner menu, which is soft shell crab and also an item I don't see at a lot of other AYCE places. The fish is fresh enough to be delicious, and the orders come out pretty quickly. One thing I wasn't a huge fan of was that the nigiri and sashimi seem to be limited to 25 pieces per order according to the menu. I'm not sure how strictly that is enforced, but we kept our orders small because of that and ended up hitting our time limit before we were fully stuffed (which could be a good or a bad thing!) The actual food was delicious - the salmon tasted fresh and fatty, the tuna didn't have a metallic taste like some places, and the squid was the perfect texture for raw squid. I also LOVE yellowtail so was very happy to see it as an option, and the green tea and red bean ice creams were a perfect way to end the meal! Was recommended Nijiya Sushi for all you can eat sushi and it was quite good. We only had the sushi menu and didn't order from the main dinner menu. You're definitely getting quantity over quality for some of the rolls that they offer. However, for an all you can eat restaurant, the quality was still pretty good. The service was very fast but staff did not come around too often to refill water or take a second order. The restaurant was pretty busy so it's probably best to go slightly before typical dinner times to get a spot without having to wait too long. read more

How can I review Nijiya? A regular there or for order in. Is this the best highest omakase quality sushi? NO. Is this great? Always yes. Dunno which one not to order and the AYCE option has never gone wrong. This is a spot I would recommend to any friend visiting Boston because I think it's genuinely worth it and has a fantastic user experience. Bonus points if you know Chinese as you get to hear gossip. Easily the best sushi buffet in the metro Boston area I've come across. Service was quick, friendly and efficient. Ambience was pleasant. Price was fair, about $31 for dinner/weekend buffet---there are limits on overall time and maximum number of pieces so you can't be a TOTAL effing shameless glutton, but unless you aspire to gobble 1/10th of your body weight in food at a time, you will not have any trouble feeling stuffed afterwards. We were mainly interested in the sashimi and nigiri, and they were of very decent quality---no, you won't get a la carte sushi restaurant quality, but I'd say at least equal to fresh-made Whole Foods sushi quality, and decent quality sticky/chewy quasi-sushi-rice not the cheap mushy white rice that the Chinese mega buffets use in their barely-edible "sushi" bars. Appetizers were their weak spot: miso soup had damn near zero miso in it that we could taste, calamari was frozen not fresh and over-breaded like the "tempura" shrimp; seaweed salad was very good, though. For dessert, the ice cream (vanilla, green tea, and red bean were the 3 flavors available) was generously portioned but somewhat bland in actual flavor, like their miso soup. All in all, not a bad deal---I had what would have cost me at least $60 in a normal a la carte sushi place, for half that amount and without any real regrets or complaints. read more

AYCE sushi seems to come and go but Nijiya has been a staple now in Medford Square for a decade and doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. The past few weekends that we have gone, every table has been full and if you're not there by like 6:30 there will be a wait. There is lots of booth space and tables that go together, we have had groups of 12 eat here with no problems in the past. The bar looks full when you walk in but I don't really do mixed drinks so I'm not sure what they offer but it looks like whatever you'd want whipped up. The restaurant itself has a good 20-25 tables overall. Some people would be taken aback by not just jumping right to the raw fish options but I do love their appetizer selection, especially at dinner. The steak is one of my favorites, even if it's not the best I've ever had being a bit tough, the flavor profile does make up for it. Calamari, dumplings, edamame.....all great and of course unlimited. Now on to the really good stuff. Get actual sushi and as much of it as you can handle. I know there is a limit on the menu but I can't remember what it is. I feel its still a very high amount, maybe 20 pieces? I've never come close to hitting it because I also want to dive into a few special rolls. A big goop-heavy on some of them with the mayo, but all have been at least decent quality for AYCE offerings. I've never felt badly or anything after, most are in the 6 to 7/10 range in terms of overall taste. You can't go wrong with any of them if you enjoy the ingredients used, even if you may have to ask what is in each. Service is very helpful, although it does feel rushed at times and the staff doesn't always seem happy to be helping out. They quickly fill drinks, clean off empty plates which can pile up quickly, and are attentive if there is an issue. No complaints, really. Finally, I do need to admit to something here on Yelp I haven't told many people or done since I was like 8 years old eating something of my mom's I didn't like. They have a rule of possibly charging you extra if you don't finish something. While they never have for us, there were a handful of times I spit a bit out into a napkin so we wouldn't be. I wanted to find a good AYCE sushi spot around boston. First experience was good, but the second time I went here, I paid more attention to everything. I made the mistake of looking in the top part of the soy sauce "jugs" before my meal. (White caps, looks like it should be used for maple syrup in a waffle place)... we took soy sauce from three other tables before we found one with virtually no mold in it. The shrimp shumai was basically all dough, barely a shrimp to be found. I've noticed a lot of their rolls are like this- generally speaking loaded up on the "cheaper" ingredients and less of anything that might cost more. I suppose you could get your money's worth of AYCE by having sashimi, but I don't know that I'd want to get raw fish here anymore knowing the state of their moldy soy sauce jugs. read more

We tried tipping her (and only her) by cash and once one of her coworkers saw that, they took her tip that SHE earned! No one else really earned it, like it's one thing to work and one thing to actually do your best to try and feel the customers welcomed. It was our first time there and will probably won't come back. I visited Nijiya Sushi about two weeks ago. I like all-you-can-eat sushi places where you order from a menu as opposed to sushi sitting out on plates, and you pick from it. So this place, in principle, was up my alley. The staff and management I interacted with were friendly, and service was generally quick. The sushi tasted fresh, and we generally enjoyed the food. The interior decor is plain, and the pictures already on Yelp show a pretty accurate view of what you get. From a food perspective, there was nothing we didn't like. We tried simple sushi pieces, sashimi, handrolls, and some specialty rolls. Their hot appetizers were enjoyable as well. In terms of ranking of other ayce sushi places, I'd say this is not as good as Maki Maki, but about the same as Yamato I/Yamato II. $28 for lunch that doesn't include special rolls or sashimi. Service wasn't the greatest. They didn't give us the right amount of nigiri we ordered and there were long delays in our plates coming out. Food was not super freshly made either - some of the tempura was soggy in the rolls. However, I will say that the white tuna sushi was good. Would recommend. Ambiance isn't great but expected from an AYCE place. Service was awful with rude servers. She lifted all our plates to make sure that we were finishing our food. I've personally introduced at least 6 different family/friend groups to Nijiya and talked about it with far more. The place can get packed, so be aware if you go during usual high-traffic times, such as weekends, nights, and holidays. The restaurant doesn't have its own designated parking lot, so you may have to park and walk a bit, especially if you don't want to pay for parking, but you can usually find a spot without much hassle. Everything is made-to-order, so if it's busier, you may have to wait a little bit. However, the wait is beyond worth it. If you pay in cash, then you get a $2 price discount per person. I don't have a favorite roll, but I do love the Back Draft, Niji Ya, Red Sox, Torched Salmon, Spicy Salmon Hand Roll, and the sashimi.
