I got the pork bun to start and I swear it must have came from an ancient boar, the portion was dinosaur sized. The staff was very apologetic about how I was the only one of 6 to have my order take a little while longer and I don't think they realized I didn't care too much. This was a good place to go to. This was sort of last minute on a Sunday during lunch hours and everywhere else in downtown Boston was packed and I had given up. But I remembered there were great options in Somerville the last time I visited and I figured I could look for a sushi place in the area, and I found one right away. Good reviews, the food looked great and the prices were decent. The parking might be hard if it's a busy day, but I was able to find a place to park, you just can't park in Dunkin's parking lot which looks like they share. But the lot I stayed in is just right across the street. The venue itself isn't super large, but a good amount of seating and a long bar area where I was quickly seated and served, I was getting a little bit darker vibes, like at night it might be a little more romantic than it was in the daylight. I got nigiri and sashimi and it was fantastic and the presentation was lovely. I wish I could have tried more, but from what I did order, it was more than enough and I was certainly full. My birthday was on a Saturday this year and so my husband and I came here a little before the peak dinner rush. We wrote our names down and were told it would be a 30min wait, so I set a 20min timer and crossed the street to get a drink at the Independent in the meantime. Kid you not, as we got our drink at the bar we got the call that the table was ready. This was all within 10mins of setting my timer. It took a while for someone to attend to us while we were seated but as soon as I started looking around for a server quickly took notice and came right over came to take our order. She was nice. First time here, noticed they are moving to new location soon. Parking was a bit tough when we went but we parked on the side that was city parking during certain times in that particular lot and walked around the corner. We had a short wait and was seated and greeted quickly. Everything we ordered was tasty. So we chose a sushi combo, which means you get X number of pieces for your choice. For example, if you get a 12 pc combo, you'd choose 6 pieces of nigiri let's say, and 1 sushi roll (6-8pc dependent on the roll). The server had to explain it to us haha because we initially just chose all nigiri. We also grabbed the agedashi tofu (so umami and yummy!) big pieces of tofu too! Always have to get the fried chicken (their karage) it was good overall but a bit thin so it was on the dryer side for us, but tasty and a nice chew. The hokkaiyaki was superb! Scallop shell appetizer, nice flavor profile, lots of scallop bits in there with imitation crab meat and spicy mayo. etc. Miso soup had plenty of flavor, tofu, and seaweed! My kids are so picky when it comes to sushi and coming here, I know they will always leave full! I used to work in the area and would come here for lunch sometimes. Once I also came for dinner. I also tried ordering takeout from them before. They are small. They do get busy. Because they get busy, they also deem it ok to refuse omakase nigiri orders. It's weird. Honestly, they should list their policy on their menu--not during lunch, and only early during dinner--a limited time slot. Or take it off the menu. Because if you order too late, it'll get too busy for them, and it'll interrupt their flow. For some reason. The only reason I come here is for some nigiri. I order only their 10 piece omakase. And maybe an appetizer. The only one I've had was their ankimono (monkfish liver). However, it seems whenever they are jam packed, they refuse to serve omakase, since in their own words, it "takes them too much time to prepare" when they are slammed. It's a shame. This means if you want their 10 piece variety pack, you have to come during lunch (as it's generally less busy than dinner), and come super early during dinner. Maybe. I did get lucky before though. I did order the 10 piece omakase during lunch, perhaps before they caught on. And I did order their 10 piece omakase during an early dinner hour. But for takeout? Around 6 pm? Nah, they definitely won't do that for you, whether you dine in or take out. Food wise, I have no complaints, except when they copped out on the omakase lunch request, and then later on when they started to deny omakase orders. From the very beginning once we walked in, the service was top notch and super friendly. We ordered 4 rolls: miso salmon, volcano, blizzard, and sweet tempura and were wow'd by nearly all of them! Ebi Sushi Bar is worth the visit if you enjoy good quality sushi w/o paying extra premium prices! They're located in Somerville, which I used to frequent often but with this being said, I just knew parking would be a little annoying since it's a pretty congested area w/ not many parking options. We did end up parking in a small lot & paid via QR code next door, $10 for 2 hrs. They don't take reservations here at Ebi, so it's first come first serve & when we finally arrived, it's was about a 5 min wait for 2 people. I really like the concept of the sushi combos, though I didn't understand it at first haha. So, they give you a sheet of paper you can mark w a pencil & can choose a couple nigiris + sushi rolls for a set price. For example, we ended up going w/ the 12 piece combo for $32, with 6 nigiris of our choice (salmon, striped bass, + yellowtail) & a roll of our choice which was the torched miso salmon maki, which came with a miso soup! There were also a couple nigiris we wanted to try that were not included in this combo set, so we ordered 3 different nigiris x2, torched salmon belly, kampachi, & yellowtail belly. For apps, we ordered the agedashi tofu, hotate hokkaiyaki, & the Japanese fried chicken. All the nigiris were so good! My favorite was the yellowtail belly, though I thought my favorite was gonna be the torched miso salmon nigiri BUT we found it to be a little more torched than we'd like & think that it would be better if it was torched for less time to be more buttery! The hotate hokkaiyaki was quite enjoyable. It was slightly different than from other restaurants we've tried this dish from & something that stood out was the use of onions. Great flavor & scallops were tasty + cooked perfectly. Agedashi tofu also was very delicious + tofu pieces were HUGE! Came piping hot, and for me, that's always a good sign lol. I think that the combo sets are a great deal; the maki roll & the nigiris were ginormous & great portions. Apps are worth getting too! Only thing is, we found the Japanese fried chicken to be a little dry & at first I thought maybe they used chicken breast but realized usually it's chicken thigh and it was indeed chicken thigh. Shrimp tempura was slightly undercooked (I didn't end up finishing it because it was still a little bit on the translucent side and I wasn't sure if it was sushi grade). That honestly could happen anywhere and the fact that it was undercooked likely meant that they used fresh shrimp!! So no complaints! Approximately 24 hours later, both my boyfriend and I developed significant gastrointestinal symptoms, including severe cramping, persistent diarrhea, and vomiting. My symptoms became severe enough that I required urgent medical evaluation for dehydration, and the illness lasted several days. Because we shared the same meal and became sick within the same timeframe, I felt it was important to share this in case others have had a similar experience. Was craving sushi and my friend suggested Ebi and I am very glad she did. I don't have many "wow"/ "yummm" food moments in Boston so this was a really nice surprise. The restaurant is on the smaller side, so you may end up waiting a bit for a table on a busy night, but they do have a very long sushi bar in you have a smaller party. Ebi offers traditional rolls like spicy tuna or California but they don't list them on the website. What we ate: - Ebi Shumai (steamed). These dumplings came with a spicy wasabi that was so good I put it on my sushi instead of the regular wasabi! - Crazy Maki: If you like spicy tuna rolls, this is a must get! - Crispy Tuna Maki: Just a spicy tuna roll - Somerville Maki: This was repetitive to the Crazy Maki, so I wouldn't get them both.
