I was kind of surprised when I got my Pad Thai. (See the photo) It didn't have any color. Now, I did ask for them to not put any bean sprouts on the dish, but even then pad Thai's usually have some red to them. I was concerned there would be a lack of flavor to the dish. There did end up being some flavor, but it wasn't very strong. I did think the chicken gyoza was pretty savory. I think all in all, this spot was pretty on-par flavor and presentation-wise, but it is pretty conveniently located by Harvard Square. If you're a Harvard student, this spot is one of the closest spots to get your Thai food. read more

I got food poisoning from this restaurant. The Tom yum was a bit fishy, but I figured it was because it had shrimp, but it might have been spoiled. I also tried shrimp pad Thai, and it was ok. The pad Thai was bland, and I rarely finished it. The spring rolls sucked, the cabbage tasted spoiled, and it smelled suspicious. This is a very average thai restaurant that is located in the heart of Harvard Square. In order to enter the restaurant, you have to take a steep set of stairs down to the basement level. There no real waiting area or host/hostess area. When we arrived, the gentleman at the bar pointed us to an open table. We were a party of three and I ordered the vegetarian Pad Thai and the other two orders curries. I thought the Pad Thai was pretty mediocre as it was fairly sweet. I did appreciate how large the portion size was as I had a decent amount of leftovers that I took home. The other members of my party were able to finish their entire entrees. Both do their curries came with a healthy serving of rice. Overall this place is pretty average and I wouldn't recommend or discourage anyone from coming here. An added appreciation to this place was that I left my credit card at the restaurant and when I came back to retrieve it, they did double check that my credit card matched my ID! read more

I've never dealt with such a rude restaurant that gets angry with their customers based on special preferences in their orders. Quite frankly, it's rude and ridiculous. I usually order the Spicy Basil Fried Rice and I have allergies to certain ingredients and I am not able to edit special instructions at all with this restaurant on the DoorDash app. It says, "The store has chosen not to accept special requests. Contact them directly with questions about their menus." I usually have to call to tell them my preference and the person I spoke with tonight was extremely rude. They were saying that they knew my order already and I should edit the instructions on the DoorDash app. I've told them multiple times over the phone that THEY need to edit this since as a customer, I do not have access to their DoorDash platform to do this! I don't understand why they're getting angry with me when they can't clearly solve their issue right. I don't like having to call places to begin with in regards to my preferences and I shouldn't be made to feel terrible because I'm preventing an allergy attack for myself. Fix your DoorDash special requests option and I won't have to call anymore! - Update: The restaurant purposely messed up my food because of the fact that I called in regards to my special instructions. They put carrots and all sorts of things in my food on purpose. I got extremely upset over the phone and asked to speak to a manager and the same woman told me that there's no manager and only staff on board tonight. I can't believe the complete disrespect. I've escalated this with DoorDash and plan to go forward. This restaurant now has temporarily closed on DoorDash because of their stupid mistake. I ordered delivery from this Harvard Square Thai restaurant. I had the Paradise Pork which is a sweet deep fried pork dish. The meat was very soft and flavorful despite being fried. The serving is not huge but enough for a meal if you order rice or an appetizer. Good option for Thai food in the area. read more

I had lunch at Nine Tastes and I'd say it was a very pleasant surprise. The service, décor and atmosphere are about what you'd expect from your standard Thai restaurant. But the food was what I'd consider a cut above average. At least the crispy chicken was. I ordered one of their lunch specials and it was filling hodgepodge of delicious food. I had the yellow curry, crispy chicken and shrimp dumplings. All were tasty but the crispy chicken really stood out compared to other, similar Thai restaurants. They pour a delicious sauce over theirs which really helps make the dish. If you're in the Harvard Square area and in the mood for Thai I'd recommend Nine Tastes. I'll be back for sure. read more

Came with yummy, sweet peanut sauce. Presentation = awesome. 1) me (yes, I'm number ONE)- crispy basil chicken. VERY VERY good. Not super spicy (as indicated by the ONE chili pepper). Comes with a decent amount of chicken and rice (and onions). Loved it. My only critique is that the chili pepper sauce becomes a bit too much at times. Presentation on plate was great. 2) Friend/former student visiting from France- he had the crispy chicken dish- came with a decent pile of chicken. Also came with a decent amount of rice and a bowl of sweet and sour sauce. The sweet and sour sauce was yummy but the chicken is also good by itself. Presentation- great. 3) Friend/former coworker #1- she had the Bangkok Jungle. She enjoyed her dish immensely. Mind you, she's been to Thailand. Not a very spicy dish, despite the 2 chili peppers. Ginger permeated the meat, which is not a bad thing. Was quite yummy. It would be been AMAZING had it not come with cilantro leaves. Even though my piece of tofu had no cilantro on it, I could still taste it. Cilantro is the BANE of my EXISTENCE. There are few things I hate in this world (like Pepsi, seafood, any type of lemon/lime drink, the smell of cigarette smoke, Popeye's), and cilantro is one of them. The only time I can TOLERATE it is in some salsas. (and I guess I can TOLERATE Pepsi as a fountain drink, just thought I'd share). But it was otherwise good. And I'd order it and beg for no cilantro. And without cilantro it would be one of the yummiest fried tofu dishes EVER. What I love about Thai food as opposed to Chinese are the flavors. American Chinese food is SO SO bland. American Thai food is actually (in my opinion) closer to real Chinese food (and I know cuz I've been there and I have eaten like a dozen types of cuisines in my 11 months of living there SO I KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT IT OK!?). I don't know how it compares to real Thai food. I will try it one day. I wish they had young coconut juice like most other Thai places around here. :( oh well! The food is yumtastic. Decent food - I ordered the khao soi which is rare to find in a Thai restaurant as a dish of Burmese origin, I believe. The dish was quite good - my only complaint would be the shortcut they used for the fried noodles that typically go in the dish. They used some sort of prefried snack material you get in most Asian stores and I was really hoping for real fried noodles. Oh well. (Pro tip if anyone else is a huge fan of khao soi - I really like Similan's.) The service was really fast in getting our food to the table but it also kind of stunk that they were so busy that they asked us to leave a few min after we paid. I understand that though, but fair warning it's not a place to have a long, casual evening meal on the weekends if you're looking for that. read more

I hadn't been here in several years and decided to get the seafood lemongrass soup noodle ($13.95). The taste of the soup and noodles were good, but the quantity of noodles was a bit skimpy. It was less than a small bowl of pho at Le's. There were two shrimps, two scallops, and two pieces of squid. The interiors are a bit crowded, and the service is subpar. It's exactly 44 minutes before my three hour science exam, and here I am Yelping instead of cramming. Yepp. This just goes to show the extent of my dedication for Yelp. 9 Tastes is actually one of the places that is helping to get me through reading and exam period. And throughout college, it's been one of my go-to places: get togethers, birthday celebrations, study breaks, or anytime I need an excuse to binge eat. So yesterday, stressed to exhaustion, I asked my resident tutors for a study break: being stressed is a perfect reason to binge eat. So they bought two large catering boxes of pad thai--delivered. Greasy, sweet, salty, lemony, with a generous helping of eggs, veggies, and chicken, it is definitely one of the better pad thai I ever had. When we had leftovers at the end of the study break, I took the rest to go. I brunched away by stress this morning with two big plates of deliciousness. By the way, the lunch boxes are amazing. You get two entrees, rice, salad, appetizer, and soup for $10. The mango curry and sauteed garlic vegetables with tofu are especially delicious, as well as any of their soup noodles. And their sauce for their dumplings and shumai is actually some of the best soy sauce I've ever had. It's flavored with a bit of fermentation, sugar, and other subtle tastes I still cannot detect. And my exam in exactly 32 mins, now that I have finished this review? It's called Science of Cooking. Famous chefs from around the world come lecture to us about the science of food, and we do somewhat sciency equations to solve for gellation, viscosity, specification, and flavor release. After trying to go to a few other restaurants in the Square this past Saturday night, my friend and I went to 9 Tastes mainly to avoid the 30 minute wait. We got here around 6:15 PM and there was no wait, sweet! We were quickly seated and brought menus. I had the Pad See Lew with vegetables, which was good and full of vegetables. I still don't think anything can compare to all of the amazing Thai food in New Haven, but I would eat here again. The portion sizes are massive and I ended up boxing half of my noodles to take home (who doesn't love leftover Thai food?). My only complaint is that sometime while we started eating, the restaurant filled up so they started rushing us even though we were only there for an hour max. They brought over the bill before we finished eating and as soon as we paid it, one of the waitresses came over and asked, "Excuse me but are you leaving now?" We said that we could and she was like, "Oh great, thank you so much," and then hovered near our table. I get wanting to minimize wait time and we weren't planning on lingering, but this seemed a bit extreme. read more

Solid Thai noodles. I have been here a few times and I am always satisfied with my dish. I tend to gravitate towards their drunken noodles. They are spicy stir fried noodles and you can get them with a choice of beef, chicken, tofu, shrimp, or pork. If you like spicy food, they are always a solid choice. The portions at the restaurant are decent. The service is OK for this somewhat casual, yet cozy restaurant. They were able to accommodate a large party of 20 for a birthday, which was impressive. Overall, a solid place to try out. I have no real complaints. It is definitely more of a sit-down place than a take-out place. Definitely check it out if you like Thai food and want to explore the many Thai restaurants in the Boston and Cambridge area. read more
