Poke bowl: salmon, shrimp, corn, lettuce, cucumber, tempura flakes, and pink ginger

NOTE: Ninja Cafe and Kung Fu Tea are co-located. This review covers the former, a Japanese fast-casual establishment. Though it offers a small selection of appetizers (gyoza, tataki, takoyaki), sushi rolls, and even sushi burritos, Nina Cafe's biggest draw, as with the tea side of the house, is its customizability. For $8 or $11 respectively, you can build your own cooked or poke bowl including your choice of rice (sushi or brown), proteins, veggies, toppings (for the poke bowl), and sauces. The portions are filling (a bowl can feed two), and miso is included. While everything tasted fresh, this isn't the best poke I've had (Greensboro's Poke Bowl offers better execution of a similar concept) though it is fairly satisfying. Staff are polite, but the custom bowls do take a bit of time to prepare. If your basis of comparison is your favorite traditional Japanese restaurant, Ninja Cafe will fail to impress. But as a quicker, cheaper, more casual alternative, it acquits itself well.

Finally we found a Poke Bowl place! Had Spicy Tuna & Salmon Poke Bowls The veggies where fresh and overall really good. The Tuna and Salmon was plentiful, not huge amounts of fish but enough to be satisfied. My only criticism is that they are a little skimpy on the Poke sauce. We even asked for extra and didn't get it. Sorry we like our sauce but it seemed like they just sprinkled a few drops. Good news, I had enough Jalapeños to numb my mouth where I didn't miss the sauce too much.

    Eel & Shrimp Sushi Burrito

Tried this place for the first time today and overall, it was pretty good! My only complaint would be that there was barely any eel in the Eel and Shrimp Sushi Burrito. There was maybe one thin slice of it in each half of the burrito. It is a decently sized burrito but taken into consideration the price ($10), there should be fewer veggies and less rice and more of the protein.

After summer vacation I came back and everyone told me how kung fu tea came to Blacksburg. I was shocked and excited to try it out. They also mentioned how kung fu tea had sushi now and I was amazed since I didn't know a kung fu tea franchise was allowed to do that. Then I realized the place was called ninja cafe, that had sushi but also sold kung fu tea. The service was very nice and friendly. I always get oolong milk tea from kung fu tea. The best part about kung fu tea, is that no matter which kung fu tea I go to the tea is always the same. I also got a fully loaded sushi burrito. I was not a big fan of it, so I probably won't get sushi from here again. The burrito felt very mushy, even though it had shrimp tempura, I didn't really get a crunch from it. The flavors were nice, but I couldn't really taste anything beside cream cheese and spicy tuna. Overall, I would definitely come back for the kung fu tea and to try their teriyaki. However, I probably won't get their sushi again.

Amazing food! I had been several times for the mango green tea (comes with mango jelly at no charge). Tried poke bowl for the first time today and it's delicious! Drive through only due to quarantine but they make the food very quickly as well. Great customer service and staff. Use the KFT app for rewards if you're into that kind of thing too.

Ordering area with nicely displayed digital menus. Little eating area with booths and table/chairs off to the side.

This is by far one of the best things to come to Blacksburg. Their variety of sushi, sushi burritos, and poke bowls are amazing! And the tea is always delicious too! My favorite is the spicy tuna sushi burrito and a passion fruit green tea -- sooo good! I've also had a poke bowl and they're yummy too! Gotta get the yum yum sauce for sure with them!

This place is awesome. Best poke bowl I've had and one of the only places in Blacksburg to get a decent helping of fresh sushi for a decent price. Poke bowls can be completely customized and two can eat for a little over 20 bucks. Not bad for takeout or a lunch date.

From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is warm and inviting -- not too flashy, just thoughtfully designed with a clean, modern aesthetic. It's the kind of place where you can just as easily bring your family for a quiet dinner or meet up with friends for a casual night out. The sushi here is consistently fresh and beautifully presented. I'm not someone who's easily impressed by rolls -- but Ocean Samurai's signature rolls are something else. You can tell they put real care into each dish, both in flavor and presentation. Even the rice is seasoned just right, which says a lot. I also appreciate the range of options for folks who don't eat raw fish -- their bento boxes, hibachi, and cooked items are just as good. One of the things I really love is how they've made an effort to connect with the community. It's clear they care about the people who live here, not just the students. The staffs are friendly and down-to-earth, and they always greet returning guests like family. I've had several conversations with the owners and it's obvious they're passionate about what they do. I hope it stays for a long time.

We were seated immediately and helped to some menus (love the menu sooooo much)! The TV was playing White Chicks and later played Madea's Big Happy Family. Very nice selection. We got our orders taken quickly and it didn't take long for the food to come out! I got the Fish and Chips with Garlic Parmesan Fries! Both items were so nice and crispy! But be aware that the garlic Parmesan is actually a sauce and not like Garlic powder and Parmesan cheese- so it's more of a wet (but still crispy) fry. The Ginger & Mint Tea was also very yummy and refreshing- barely tasted the tea and almost tasted fizzy but nevertheless very refreshing to wash everything down. Just overall such good food and good vibes! Will be coming again and again!

***3 1/2 stars***…read more This was kind of all over the place, and a prescient reminder that sometimes you get what you pay for. My top-tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality (down the street!) and I stopped here for a much-needed recharge after she led a comprehensive campus tour in 90-degree heat. There weren't a ton of eating options - graduation was apparently last week, and the offseason for the campus town has officially commenced - but this one looked fairly decent for what it was. The menu was also intriguing, with both sushi and Mediterranean-style cuisine. In my experience, jamming a bunch of random types of food onto a menu can be very hit or miss, but I wouldn't say that was really an issue here. We both had sticker shock or lack thereof when we looked at the cocktail menu. Margaritas are about $6, and "top shelf" ones are $8? Incredible stuff. I went with the top shelf frozen berries margaritas, and specifically requested Don Julio. That said - and maybe this is a reflection of my having a more adult palate than the college student target demo, or maybe I'm just officially a degenerate at this point - it wasn't a strong marg at all, and both of us ended up getting extra shots of Don Julio to make it taste better. So the additional tequila brought the total marg prices to $10, which is still incredible in my opinion, given what we're dealing with in the NYC metro area. Since we were on a pretty naughty vacation, I tried to tread water a bit and went with the salmon teriyaki bowl (about $20 I think). Honestly really hit the spot. The salmon was fresh/flavorful, and as you can see from the attached, a ridiculously generous portion. I wasn't in the mood for the accompanying side salad (again, I was on vacation), but the rice and salmon were a distant memory quickly enough. I was also kind of obsessed with the plate that it came on - I'm not really sure how to describe it other than that it looked like dishware you'd find in the Flintstones' house. It sort of looked like a sculpture of a piece of bent tree bark? I know, I'm not giving this justice. We also split the bang bang shrimp app, which was very good as well - maybe a TOUCH over-fried, but I think that's part of the package with the naughty appetizer section of a menu. Would get both of those items again in a heartbeat. The service was honestly pretty mediocre, and a big reason this ultimately was just an okay experience. A shame, given that we both legitimately liked the food. Our waiter was definitely confused by my chum's drink order (which, to be fair, WAS a little off the beaten path - she requested one of their non-alcoholic mango lychee lemonade, plus a separate shot of Don Julio), and our drinks ultimately showed up at the same time as our food. He also came back to our table after about 15 minutes to reconfirm her drink order. Not great, and a reminder that there's no harm in bringing a pen and a pad with you to the table. This wasn't terrible by any means, but was an uneven experience. Frankly, I think expectations should be a little tempered in a college town, where the average diner is probably in their early 20s and pretty low maintenance when it comes to their food and drink preferences. But if they figured out the service here, they'd really have something.

And Kabuki Japanese Steak House & Sushi located in Christianberg, Virginia is the perfect example. My friend and I arrived at the restaurant on a beautiful Tuesday early evening at around 5:30pm. The architectural design of the building itself was very impressive. The light blue tiles of the roof stand out as we're not used to seeing blue tiles on a building but mostly red. The majestic entrance to the building anticipated something special inside. After passing by several display cases with Japanese items inside we reached the Host's station where a young lady host warmly greeted us and guided us to the dining area. There we found several teppanyaki tables. These tables are designed with a built-in flat iron griddle where food is cooked in front of the diners. The term "teppanyaki" itself comes from the Japanese words "teppan" (iron plate) and "yaki" (grilled).  The first table was already complete, so we were the first party to be seated at the second table. I sat at the corner so had a perfect view of the chefs of both tables. First our server, another young lady came and took the order of everyone on the table. She then brought us our soup and salad which was a good size and very tasteful. Then the Chef came out and repeated the order in front.of us to make sure who wanted what and how did they wanted cooked. Both my friend and I ordered the Filet Mignon & Scallops. He ordered the steak medium and I medium rare. Then the Chef started doing a show with his cooking instruments and with fire. I invite you to view my photographs and video clips accompanying this review for a better idea of the set-up and food. Even though the food was a bit expensive, I appreciated the fact that it was plentiful. They serve us a good size Filet Mignon and three large size quality Scallops. I've been at cheaper restaurants of this type that the amount of food left us with much to be desired and a bit hungry at the end. But not here. We felt totally satisfied at the end. Our Chef had a warm and welcoming personality and made the dining experience a total pleasure. As the evening went on several other tables were filled, and this was good for it being a Tuesday. In conclusion, I highly recommend this restaurant for its cleanliness and the beauty of its exterior and interior design, creating a suitable environment appropriate to enjoying a wonderful presentation and Japanese meal, provided by a very friendly and talented staff.
