The food is sooo delicious and exactly what you'd expect for a Mexican meal but all plant based so you can feel good knowing no animals were harmed in the process. :) I highly recommend both dishes-the birria plate and the taco plate with carne asada. I first discovered this little piece of vegan heaven 2 years ago when I stumbled across their food truck on 11th street. Yesterday was my first time going to their brick and mortar since the food truck location is temporarily closed. I placed my order online and it was sitting there waiting for me when I arrived 5 minutes after the pickup time. My beans and rice were lukewarm but that is my fault for arriving late. The tacos did not disappoint. I have never had real pastor so I am not sure what it is supposed to taste like but the pastor and carne asada tacos were so good. I ordered the taco plate that came with 4 tacos, beans and rice. I managed to eat them so fast that I had to look at my picture to make sure there were four tacos in there. Their food is just that good. I have had their nachos, birria tacos and burritos. Everything is full of flavor. I would like to see other options other than soy protein. They don't take phone orders so you either place your order in person or online. They have ample parking and they have outside seating if you choose to sit outside. After a couple fun hours at Emerald Tavern, lunch at Nissi Vegmex sounded like the natural option. We ordered the Carne Asada fries, the Taco plate with al pastor, and the Birria plate. In short, everything was excellent. The fries were crispy and delicious with the sauces and beans. The beans in general were super flavorful; I can't say enough about the beans, actually. The two plates were pretty good. The meat substitutes weren't exactly identical to the real thing, but they were fairly convincing when eaten with everything. I haven't had any since I moved here. There's a lot of parking since it's connected to other stores. The restaurant itself is kind of small. But the furniture is really nice. Admittedly I felt more to be desired with the carne asada as I felt the flavor was more on the mild side. However, the al pastor was done well and the flavor was on point! I am absolutely blessed to live within a few minutes of this place! Nissi is a regular in my eating out rotation and I love bringing non-vegans and those new to Austin here because it's incredibly consistent and so delicious. Get the Birria tacos. Just trust me. They're unreal. Mind-blowing. I always have a hard time choosing between those and the flautas/taquitos. They are covered in yummy sauce and somehow still so crispy. The "chicken" crisps up so nicely at the ends too and is very flavorful. I've also had the birria ramen which is super fun - a nice way to mix it up but I'd pretty much always pick the tacos or the flautas over it. The avocado torta is super simple but surprisingly good and filling. The nachos come in the most generous portion - go with these with the "chicken" if you're super hungry! They're really good! All of the proteins here are super impressive both flavor and texture-wise. I'm not a huge fan of the al pastor personally, but probably because I'm always so spoiled by all the other options. Finally, the service is really lovely. I've never been greeted with anything other than a warm, smiling face and it's really great seeing the same folks here time and again. Thank you, Nissi! Family went to Austin Texas. It was my first time in the city. I have a family full of vegans looking for a place to eat. My wife and daughter selected this place. I'll try something new. It seems like just a simple neighborhood restaurant. It was so much more. The food was excellent. My daughter compared it to a restaurant with two Michelin stars where she'd dined when she went to New York earlier this year. I had the tamales. The meat substitute was a perfect flavor and texture. I knew it wasn't pork, but it was the best substitute I have eaten. I'm more of an omnivore, but because of family preferences, I generally eat vegan meals. This was as close a match as I've ever had. The textures and tastes are outstanding. It was busy when we arrived, but there was no problem ordering food. The restaurant has most electronic amenities to make using a smart phone speed up the ordering process. The staff is very friendly, helpful, and just really good at what they do. The restaurant is clean, of average noise, and the service is quick. I would come back to this place anytime. I highly recommend the food, service, the atmosphere, and the overall experience. It was very reasonably priced, and we were all satisfied. This is one of the best restaurants for vegan food that I've ever been in. I highly recommend them and wish them every success. read more

Nissi is perfect for what it is. A vegan Tex mex spot. Does that mean it has the best tacos in austin? Not necessarily but it gives vegan people and vegetarians a chance to enjoy tacos so I loved it. They do synthetic protein tacos that aim to emulate the taste of meat tacos. We got the taco plate that came with 4 tacos, and 2 size for 14 bucks. It can be pretty steep but you have to remember these are catered for dietary restrictions. We got the pastor and the carne asada. The carne asada was my favorite, it tasted very similar to pork and had great seasoning. The pastor tasted like fried tofu peels and I wasn't a big fan of them. Overall I think it's a great spot for vegans and I hope more people support them. read more

PROS: (1) Excellent vegan food (2) Nice tables and atmosphere (3) Some of the tableware is renewable (not plastic), i.e., the plates and utensils (but not cups). CONS: (1) You wouldn't know that this is a sit-down restaurant from the website, because the website doesn't say. You go to the website, it just asks whether you want delivery or takeout, and there's no phone number to call to verify. (2) All proteins are soy-based. Not sure if it's isolated soy protein / textured vegetable protein, but if it is, that's twice as powerful at causing cancer growth as dairy (which itself is more cancer-promoting than meat).* Whole soybeans don't have that effect, it's the refined soy protein that does. Would have appreciated a note on the menu explaining whether they're using whole or processed soy, and if the latter, would have appreciated even one alternative to the processed soy. (3) Plates and utensils were plant-based, but even better would be washable, for less waste. (4) There was no separation of trash, the two bins were unmarked and contained the paper products, plastic products, and bottles. I've been a fan of the food truck in East Austin and am now blessed to have the brick-and-mortar five minutes from my house. I'd thought going vegan meant saying goodbye to Mexican food forever, but Nissi is super authentic, especially for Austin. The carne asada fries are a must-have on every visit. The hempchata was a bit less sweet than I would have imagined, and the tacos al pastor were a little less dry than I would have expected also. Seating is abundant and Spanish music is always playing, making me feel like I was back in South Texas for a while. Okay Sergio, so now you are the worst business owner I've ever heard from. So again, I ordered a single birria taco which I initially saw on the online menu. I get to the restaurant and see that there is no birria on the single taco menu. I let Chino know that and with an attitude he rings one up for $4.23. Again, it was great, crispy and had great dipping sauce. I invite my cousin and we get a 4 taco plate to which the birria tacos weren't crispy but still good. I come back two days later and order a single birria and Chino rings it up. It's totally different from two days ago and he tells me, that first taco should cost $6 and he shows me the bigger tortilla. What a wonderful experience I had at Nissi. It had natural lighting (which isn't that common), and the temperature was nice and cool.
