Cheko's should be more popular! I came here with a friend on a Saturday night and it was dead but we were so confused why. This place has great food, amazing prices, good portions, and awesome service. Very simple but nice seating inside and they have great specials every day. On Saturday the enchiladas were $10.99 so I got the chicken fajita enchiladas with salsa verde and they were great! I dislike giving bad reviews but some places truly deserve it. A quick check of other reviews made this place seem like a good choice. I often wonder how other diners experiences can be soooo different from my own. Cheko's, on this day at least, deserves this review. On a brief trip to Austin a friend suggested meeting here (it's across the street from his apt) and says that he likes the place. He's from the east coast so I now doubt his ability to judge Tex-Mex but I digress. At 5pm on a Wednesday, on a major street, I walk into a completely empty restaurant. No cooking aromas. No mariachi music. Nothing. After a long look at the large menu I chose a gordita with picadillo and my friend chooses a carne asada plate. These orders came to the table VERY quickly. At first I was astonished but then they came into view. My gordita was a rock hard, flat, thin slab of masa with the filling oozing around the sides. No lettuce, no tomato, cheese...just beans and meat. (The gordita on the menu included those items) I sent it back immediately and then ordered two carne guisada tacos. (pictured) This also came to the table VERY quickly. The tortillas were possibly 6" across and the carne was bleeding from each end. I used my fork to taste the guisada only to get a big mouthful of fatty beef nugget hidden behind the sauce. I picked at it for a while and left it. My friend's plate was an unholy looking mess of thin cut carne asada (it didn't look fresh...or even hot), guacamole slices, nopales, cheese, and rice, All slopped together. It was hideous. He didn't finish it. Cheko's should "finish". It's plain bad. read more

I decided to give you another try and was even more dissapointed. The salsa takes like a very cheap can of stewed tomatoes. It seems like you are trying to cater to strictly a gringo crowd, but this gringo was not impressed. My British grandmother made better than this! The charro beans tasted sour and had rancid hot dogs floating in it. The instant refried beans I recieved as a replacement did nothing to make it better. You do not warrent charging the ridiculous prices like they charge at an upscale, much tastier establishment. My Verde Ck enchiladas! 1st bite was amazing - perfect verde sauce, just enough cheese - SUPER MOIST AND FLAVORFUL Chicken...they got it right! This is the sort of no frills place you like supporting. Family runs the place and works in the kitchen. Food is authentic and down to earth, no fancy names or sauces or up charges. It's what you see is what you get--which is great Mexican food. Don't expect a fancy atmosphere but do expect good drinks food and service. We need to preface this review with the following: despite whatever we're about to say, you should definitely visit and support this business, which is clearly run by a loving family that is not caught up in Austin restaurant pretensions. We adored the casual, no-frills atmosphere, the easy pace of service, and the "old Austin" vibe. That said, we cannot in good faith recommend the food... We were here last weekend and thought Cheko's would be on par with the quality of Julio's or Curra's, but it's not even quite there. Margaritas are made with the cloying bottled stuffed and the queso is given no extra love other than just being melted. Kids got cheese quesadilla plates, which were fine--standard--but you can tell the beans came straight out of a can. We shared the ground beef taco plate and, well, best to leave it to the imagination. Chips and salsa are great! It breaks our hearts to be truthful about this place's food because we do genuinely recognize its many merits. We feel assured that other folks might go and absolutely love it! The drinks are served in styrofoam cups I guess to limit dishes...but this doesn't allow the waitress to see who needs refills. I ate with a bunch of my DPS family and I expected service to be somewhat slower but the food took forever to come out. When I received my carne guisada plate, it was room temperature...the whole place could use an upgrade. I don't think anyone finished their plates. The chicken in my enchiladas was flavorful and juicy, and the tomatillo sauce was tangy and very classic. Husband's steak was incredibly tasty, great balance of flavor, and well-portioned. My dish was 3 enchiladas, each well-filled with chicken, with rice and beans for 12.99. Fair prices, good portions, quick service, no BS. Of course Tex Mex in Texas is a thing you gotta try. This place is sort of like a hidden little shack off of the Main Street, and I just wanted to pop in and give it a try. It wasn't very busy when I went in, and there was only one lady taking orders. One cook in the back of course. You order at the cashier stand before taking a seat. The menus are laminated on a table near the front as to follow protocols at the moment. But you can do take out orders too. I decided to try their nachos. They have several different kinds, but I had the beef fajita ones to keep it simple. The chips could've been better or at least not like they came out of a tortilla chip bag. Other than that, the sour cream, jalepenos, guacamole, and meat were pretty tasty. I think I might try a mixture of the chicken and beef ones next time. They also have other things such as enchiladas, fajitas, I think tamales, quesadillas, and other great Tex Mex stuff. It's not like Papasito's or any other chain place like that, and it's only a local place that probably had a lot of regulars. My family was pretty hungry after a long day in the sun, so we stopped over at this local Mexican restaurant. We wanted to support local and a small business, so we went to try it out. Short version- I am very surprised this place is still open- especially for a place like Austin with an abundance of good, quality Tex-Mex food experiences. The service and food (flavor and quality) were absolutely horrible. We ordered at the counter and the cashier (who was also the server) had absolutely no emotion as we ordered, even after overly expressing our gratitude multiple times as we ordered and for taking our order. Did not crack one smile or say thank you after we ordered. There was no conversation or sense that we were even welcome there! When she brought our food, she just set it on the table and walked away. Maybe a bad day/week?? The food was a shame. I ordered the Tex Mex enchiladas with picadillo. It was served in a store-bought tortilla with week-old-looking dry picadillo and topped with nacho cheese. It was GROSS. To top it off, my rice had a hair in it. I want to love this place since it is so convenient and close, but we will never go back. :/ read more

Now if you are looking for a guajillo salsa - made only with prime Santa Rosa Mirasol chiles from the February Harvesting - sun dried on a mesquite board - then flavored with Cortez tomatillos, Valle Hermanosa cumin, and aged Cayman limes, may I recommend the Bistro Mexicano in Malibu Beach where Taylor Swift eats? Pretty darned good is a perfect summation of Cheko's. In the current Mexican food environment, you're often faced with a choice between classic Tex-Mex and a more authentic taqueria style. Cheko's is one of the few places I've found that straddles the line and does it all well. I'd also note that Cheko's may well be the Mexican food of a neighborhood diner. Friendly service, a menu filled with all of the usual comfort foods (including breakfast available past breakfast), and reasonable prices. Now -- on to the food. First, the chips and salsa are good. Everyone at the table gets an individual bowl of red salsa, which becomes strangely addictive after a while. The entire table also gets a squeeze bottle of a green sauce that neither of us tried. My beef fajita burrito was a pleasant surprise. The beef was cut into small bits more like one of the taquerias but the red sauce and melted yellow cheese were classic Tex-Mex comfort food. My dining companion raved about her chile relleno and particularly noted the spiciness which was probably from the seeds remaining in the pepper. If we both had one complaint, it would be the rice. It had an unusual seasoning and had a lot more vegetable bits than I like. Again, the star of the meal was the excellent service. Drinks were refilled promptly and the staff couldn't have been friendlier. It's clearly a family owned business and they rightfully show their pride in it. read more
