I had 3 college friends in town this past week and we ended up eating here at the last minute after a nearby place we had booked didn't meet all the dietary requirements of my friends and we are glad we did. One of my friends is vegetarian and the other is gluten free. I don't eat bell peppers and limit my dairy intake so this place ended up being perfect! So many delicious items and all for just $16! I had the hibiscus tea and it was delicious as well. The person at the register was super helpful and explained everything. They had a menu of the day so everything was made fresh. The menu was hand written! We were able to sit outside under a covered area which was nice when the rain came down a bit. It was a lovely day to sit outside in the evening. I look forward to having another meal here again. The vibe is immaculate here, which makes food only part of the focus, because the space here is designed to attract those that are looking for a level of inner peace, and I was absolutely down for it. The food was simple, healthy, and delicious, and I had a great time consuming everything from vegetables to legumes to tea. One meal portion was $16 per person and I was served a plate of food that contained sauteed vegetables, salad, lentils, and steamed vegetables with sauces. Everything was delicious. Since I normally loved cooking vegan at home, some of what they served here, especially lentils, matched exactly what I would have cooked. The soup and tea were amazing as well, and there was a piece of paper on the table with explanations about the tea. Even on a Monday in December, this place had everything that I needed. If you want to feel virtuous for the rest of the day, Casa de Luz is your spot. This place is basically the mothership for holistic, plant-based, vegetable-forward dining in Austin. This was my second visit, and the food followed the same formula as the first. You walk in, pay at the counter (as of late 2025 the meal is $16, there is only one option), then swing around to the other counter to pick up your tray of wellness. It comes with soup and a salad. Today's lineup: massaged kale, a vegetable medley of cauliflower, carrot, and zucchini and rice and black beans for your carbs and protein. The main item if you call it that was a taco in a corn tortilla, which was filled with, shocker, more vegetables. Mushroom and green bean taco. I have to admire the commitment. Hot or iced tea is self serve and comes with the meal. There's also dessert if you want to pay a little extra. The vibe is exactly what you'd expect from an Austin institution that's been doing this forever. It sits in a little cluster of shops that all radiate holistic energy. There was an organic juice shop, a place that services healthy hot chocolate. I didn't see a crystal store, but I could have just missed it. Speaking of things I may have missed, I didn't see any knives with the other cutlery. Just forks and spoons here. And honestly, why would you need a knife? There's nothing here that a fork can't gently subdue. The outdoor dining area is lovely, with trees and a peaceful feel, and the indoor space is just as nice. Tranquil world music plays softly in the background. I've never been at night, but the little pathway to the restaurant looks like it would be beautiful in the evening. You come here if you want vegetables, with a side of vegetables, sprinkled with more vegetables. It's not Franklin Barbecue, and it's not trying to be. This place is magical! The food is tasty. It is plant based and organic. If they allow it, I recommend bringing a container in case you have leftovers. They give you a generous amount of food. I love the Casa De Luz space because it has a long walkway of paths with vegetation and seating areas. The location is so peaceful with water fountains and the sound of running water. There are several really unique murals that are painted on the buildings. I like to go walk around and explore the paths and sit and reflect in the beauty and peacefulness of the place. I was here for a wellness run collective meetup on Sunday morning and they had many vendors on site. It was a great location to host a community event. They also have a restaurant on site serving whole plant cuisine. I love their motto that they are a beacon for connection to food, community and ourselves. They derive their essential fatty acids from freshly ground seeds and nuts, creating sauces and dressings that not only nourish the body but also honor the wholeness of the plants themselves. Wonderful calming ambiance. Loved the vision and the food felt healing and fresh. Incase you are wondering if a vegan plate could keep you full, I would say it very much will. Our group met at the one in Toomey, and I made an Austin style joke that there would be two of me because I planned to eat so much, lol! I hadn't been in a moment and felt warmly welcomed and felt so grateful the food was so clean and good! I wanted to LOVE this place, it looked super cool on something I saw on TV about it. I ended up only liking it because of it's beautiful serenity. The food took so much away. I don't mind the concept for their food, as a matter of fact, I was intrigued by it from other's reviews. They make a daily plate of their choice, vegan options. Again, totally ok with that, it's the lack of communication of the whole concept that was my first issue. Nothing was explained, no signs, no chalkboard menu saying what today's offer would be. You go up, sound stupid asking how it works, get told , "it's 16 or 17 a plate, (I can't remember) and you pick up your food over there ' with a very vague hand wave in a different direction. Ok, I step back and wait for someone else ( another customer) to provide me the details the cashier couldn't or wouldn't, still not sure. After observing someone else go thru the motions, I step forward. I pay, don't get a receipt, or a number or anything. I kind of just hang out for a few minutes and look around to see where the other customer went that unknowingly taught me how to at least get thru the first part. I find her and find myself copying her yet again.. went and got a drink, a warm drink, they didn't seem to have ice at this restaurant, (I guess it's an even more 'natural' concept than I thought). Anyway, I finally got thru that entire intimidating routine and sat myself down with a bowl of warm, (warm is being generous on my part) broth with a few vegetables floating in it. I should have taken a picture because I can not believe that is what the concept of their soup offering should look like, but ok. At this point I have given up hope of being impressed. The plate of salad and vegetables was beautiful, no denying that, and chock full of a lot of yummy things, unfortunately I can't tell you what half of it was because again... no explanation of anything anywhere. I didn't like a couple of the offerings, and salt and pepper would have been greatly appreciated, but I could locate none anywhere in the 'cafeteria' style set up they had going on. So yeah, the food part of the experience was very disappointing. But the grounds made up so much of it that I still enjoyed my after meal time there. Beautiful seating areas, lots of greenery, lots of secluded places to be left alone, no apparent time restrictions on the seating areas, just a lot of peaceful gentle surroundings to ease your mind . That part I highly recommend. Like, if you were to bring a picnic lunch and cop a squat, you would totally love it, and since there didn't seem to be anyone around who was willing to explain things, I think you could pretty easily accomplish this. I don't want to just say it was okay, again, because of the beautiful area provided to just take it all in, but the 'good' part of the review is only based on the surroundings and definitely not the food experience. read more

I love that there's no menu - you show up and you get fed a nourishing, wonderful vegan meal. We tried casa de luz for dinner last week and really liked everything! The food is so hearty and delicious - I think it's all vegan and gluten free! Usually a salad and soup and vegetables with sauce and some sort of grain. The soup was a pea soup and really reminded me of the pea soup my grandma makes - great flavor! The chickpeas also remind me of my mother's chickpeas which was amazing too! Very healthy and great flavors. The desserts are really insane!!! But all meals are Whole Foods, vegan with little oils, plant based and very nutritious. They brew 2 different types of teas all herbal The meals are only $14 very affordable for such clean food. This is self serve so there is no way to really rate the service but the staff is all very friendly. Really love this spot for many reasons. First and foremost, it's tranquil, tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Secondly the food served at Casa de Luz is plant based intentionally made with love, and although I don't eat this way often, I am grateful for the reset for my gut health. Ahm this place is amazing. I'm kind of not nice about most places but this is the most cozy, cute place ever. It's massive first of all. It has like 2 coffee shops, indoor and outdoor seating, and it's got this vibey communal feel including elderly people sitting spring doing Reiki on each other while you stare and a PLAYGROUND for children - um how flipping cute. Now, the food. Dude. I've been vegan for 6 years and when I told you the food HIT MY REWARD centers! This is the first whole food plant based restaurant I've been to and I absolutely loved it! Their food is organic, vegan (no meal, no dairy, no eggs) and whole food plant based (less processed foods, no oil, no sugar, minimal salt) and it's extremely nutritious. It's a cafeteria style food system where everyone pays the same price (14+tax, no tip), and you pick your food up in the kitchen, eat and put the dishes back. The day I went there I got a clear veggie soup, 2 salads, sautéed veggies and a side of beans. They also have an organic tea, 2 teas - but I didn't like them. However, my brother absolutely loved the hibiscus tea. This was the first restaurant where I ate and didn't feel weird after eating it lol.
