It's been over a year since we last had No. 1 Taco, and it still remains my favorite spot for tacos and burritos. It was the perfect choice for a rainy-day indulgence. The birria taco was crispy and held up nicely even after several dunks in the consomé. **We spent about $31.18 for two orders of birria tacos (three per order), $3.09 for a Coke, and $4 for an agua fresca (guava). The guava one was okay but nothing can top their strawberry kiwi agua fresca. No. 1 Taco remains a must-have when in VB. I have yet to find something close to it on the peninsula. read more

No 1 Taco is a solid spot for some good tacos! I've been a couple times now in the past year and it's fast casual spot to dine in and get some good Mexican food here. My favorite protein to get is absolutely the tripa (fried tripe) - it's seasoned well and delicious. Their queso and chips is also excellent and a must get as well! I also really enjoy their many flavors of agua frescas and got the pineapple one on my latest visit and it was tasty and refreshing! Food came out in a timely manner and there's no wait service here. Went for dinner before our "snowstorm" since we had a craving for tacos. My wife got three al-pastor tacos which were good but missing the pineapple. I ordered the sol-cal burrito and it was good too but I tasted different than what I remembered when I first tried number one taco back when it was part of king-fu tea. The people taking out orders were nice and helpful and the turnaround for food was quick. I like me the option to get sauces on the side, however, you're limited to trying only two before having to pay for more which is understandable to cut down on waste..but sometimes I like all the sauces and won't know until I tried them all. We came here on cinco de mayo, it wasn't overly busy but man the wait was long & unfortunately the food was disappointing. Service was nonchalant and disconnected. We got chicken tacos and birria tacos which were dry and bland. The restaurant itself just feels out of place. You order like at a walk up deli & then they call out your number. Seating is set up like a spread out Chinese restaurant. It lacks any kind of warmth or decor inside. The food looks great but looks can be deceiving. It's been a hot minute since we have visited and was just as impressed with the food as our first visit a year ago! Husband had a steak NorCal burrito with his choice of protein and he picked steak. The burritos are large enough to cut in half and have two meals so a great deal! He loved the burrito and ended up eating it the next day and heated up great in the air fryer! Orange hot sauce that comes with the order was more spicy than the green sauce. I ordered the kids chicken taco with rice as my side. Tons of chicken and rice. I also added a side of pico. I had enough meat and rice and chicken to make two more tacos at home! It has not changed inside since our last visit, a large amount of tables, soda machine, and a counter with a salsa bar. Ask for and check the receipt. Been coming here a long time, it's the only place in the area that knows how to do a California Burrito correctly. Up until today there hasn't been any issues and we've really enjoyed the food. When we went in to pay for the pick up order, we asked for a receipt and the cashier looked a little bit shocked about asking for it. Got the receipt and food then headed home. Half way getting home we noticed that a 10% tip was added, something we did not add due to it being picked up by us. I'm not sure if No 1 Taco now does mandatory tips or if it was a mistake, but I'm leaving this review because I feel like it's the right thing to do to inform other people to make sure they check their receipts. Recommend to everyone, they even have a pickled garnish bar which is very authentic, comparable to burritos out west, must've gone here 5 times beach to back for the norcal burrito with birria meat or whatever one has no fries in it, it's really good. The street tacos is a must try and loaded nachos. For the tacos try it with carnitas and chorizo. The chorizo was my favorite. The loaded nachos is really loaded. We had ours topped with carnitas and we were not disappointed. Really it could be someone's meal. This place has so much potential. We came on 3/1/26 and we ordered two carne asada tacos, a socal burrito and two kids tacos. The meat was very dry, like tough and had no moisture. We moved back from southern cali the summer of 2025 so we are used to better Mexican so I try to give east coast Mexican some grace but this place is close to it If they can find a way to make their carne asada more moist and tender it would really take it to the next level... the sauce bar is and we enjoy the salsas a lot. They don't seem to clean the dining room at all so we had to wipe our own table so that was also kind of annoying. We had ordered tacos, queso, chips, and fried plantains, and all the dishes were delicious. I loved the birria taco and the fried plantains the most. The fried plantains were served with dulce de leche, which reminded me of a Filipino snack called Banana Que. Other options are also available, such as rice bowls, burritos, birria ramen, and hotdogs. The salsa bar added some extra spice to our tacos as well. Their location reminds me of the taquerias in California. The prices are reasonable and affordable. The staff were amiable and pleasant. The only thing I wish they would change is their menu. I was so confused when I was reading it. I wasn't sure which meats to go with especially when ordering the street tacos. Next time, I will try their Al Pastor. No. 1 Tacos exceeded my expectations. After living in San Diego, I find it difficult to find taco shops that I love. San Diego is the taco shop hub and they're all fantastic. No 1 Taco has been on my list because someone suggested that this may be close to what I had when I lived there and that sounded great to me! Location is easy and convenient, lots of parking and a good amount of seating inside. You order at the counter and seat yourself. I did like that they had a salsa bar.. this was the first sign that this may be similar to the shops I loved in SD. They have picked veggies and 4 different salsas to choose from. I grabbed their two salsa verdes (mild and medium) and both were pretty good. I ordered their Chorizo Brunch Burrito and a Chile Relleno. I requested both refried beans and sour cream on my burrito, but they refused to do that, which is my only true complaint. It's my favorite way to get a breakfast burrito: meat, eggs, cheese, potatoes, refried beans and sour cream. My go-to order. It was disappointing that they couldn't do that and I instead had to order a whole side of refried beans and put it on myself. When I did do this, it was delicious. Hopefully in the future, they might let me order it the way I prefer, but if not, I would still get the same and put it together myself. The Chile Relleno was nothing great. No sauce and a bit bland. One complaint I did have, half the restaurant was closed to those dining in. So tables were very limited. They were pretty busy for a Thursday night but food came out at a quick pace. She gave me an estimate of when my order would be ready and it was ready and packaged up waiting for me when I arrived. I got the SoCal Burrito with French Fries and Carne Asada as my protein. The burrito was so big and loaded with flavor. All of the ingredients married well together and it was so filling that I couldn't even finish the entire thing alone. This was my first time trying Birria Ramen and I was not disappointed. The birria is made with pork and it was seasoned well and the broth was very rich and delicious. It is rare for me to come to Virginia Beach on a workday, but on the way to another spot for Yelp Elite week, I made a pit stop here for an early dinner after leaving work from Portsmouth. Based on the number of reviews, checking it out seemed to be the best route. But the result wasn't what I expected. When I walked inside, I was greeted by the front of the house. The decor is clean and neat, very spacious. You go up to order your meal once you come in. I chose a quesadilla with pollo chicken with a side of fries. In ten minutes, it was ready for eating. First off, the fries were actually pretty good. Crunchy and hot. A little salty, but tasted just fine for me. Now here comes an issue. For many quesadillas I've eaten before, you would have your choice of protein to go with cheese and veggies (i.e. peppers, onions, mushrooms). For this one, it was just chicken and cheese.....lots of chicken and cheese. And unfortunately, a whole lot of grease. Not good at all. It didn't even come with sour cream, guacamole and pico. I couldn't even finish half of it fearing it would give me a bad stomach or heartburn. A very dissapointing visit. I ended up getting a steak burrito and I'm not disappointed. Look at that burrito(picture), it was a little less than $16(tax included) but it can feed a family.
