Well worth a little jaunt off of the main strip, Taqueria Jessy's has authentic Mexican food that will make you want to come back for more. Here's the deal: Jessy's is located in a small shopping strip. While the building is a little older I did not think l it run down or in a part of town that I would consider questionable at all. I saw at least one review that noted this- could not disagree more., nothing to fear here. Plenty of parking and it's free! Once inside the restaurant is medium sized with seating for at least 15 parties and tables that can accommodative larger parties, 10+ people. There are two order stations at either side of the restaurant - one for hot food the other for ice cream and desserts. Service was friendly and attentive. You can choose to self order for takeout or be waited on. While staff wait on and bring you food and drink, pay is self pay at the food order counter. The menu is larger and has something for everyone. Proteins are optional for nearly every dish. The food here is authentic with lots of protections including some of my favorites- Al pastor and chicken tinga. Chips and salsa are scratch made and fresh- very good. We had street tacos which were very flavorful and also scratch cooked including the corn tortillas. Served with traditional hot sauces to add that little extra heat- awesome. The Al pastor was not grilled to get that char that some Al pastor dishes have but was otherwise spot on. Chicken tinga was perfect. I ordered the short ribs meal and a choco flan to go. The ribs were flavorful and the accompaniments were just as delicious! The owner was friendly and very helpful with explaining the desserts. This particular location is close to the oceanfront off the strip away from the fray with plenty of seating. Highly recommended by a co-worker who wanted to eat here while he was in town for the weekend for a business dinner. So we met up here at this unassuming spot. They have a few more but this small, nondescript strip mall location is supposed to be one of the best (is it the first?) so here we were. It's small and dive-y inside but wasn't too crowded and we were immediately sat at a table in the back and assisted by a friendly and prompt server who was quick on the draw with all requests. My friend ordered a margarita (I don't drink) and the Huarache Campechano - a huge hand-made corn tortilla, Oaxaca melted cheese, cilantro, sour cream, and carne asada and chorizo on top. It was gigantic, he liked it but didn't love it. I ordered the queso to go with our chips and salsa because, you always have to and went with a veggie sampler and was able to try three different veggie takes on some of the favs like toastadas and such. It was good but not spectacular. I got flautas and they were fresh and amazing! I ordered through a mobile app, and unfortunately my order was missed at first. I arrived 20 min after placing the order and ended up having to wait another 20 min because they hadn't seen my order. TO BE FAIR.... the 4-5 order printers were JUMPING! So I wasn't even mad. Stopped in to get ice cream and stayed for a meal! Was greeted by Ricardo who is always kind and patient. He took the time and let my son sample different ice creams as this was his first visit. He also explained menu items and ingredients. I had my fave pica fresa and my son had the strawberry cheesecake. We decided to grab food. My son had the chicken tinga gordita and I had the torta de birria. The meat on both was extreme tender and flavorful. The bread on the torta was extremely soft and fresh. The flavor of the cilantro ands fresh onions didn't get lost in the cheese and meat on the sandwich. The consome had lots of flavor. Service was speedy and there was a constant flow of customers. The woman taking my order helped me decide which meat to select. The restaurant has a large seating area and is nice and bright. This was a nice stop on the way home from the beach. I can't believe I live so close and have for years and have not been here. I think they have recently expanded but I felt like I was in a restaurant in Mexico. It felt very authentic. There was also really cool art on the wslls. We were a little confused on if we should go up to the counter and order or sit down and they take our order. I grabbed meus at the register and sat down. They brought chips and salsa which was definitely homemade. I got the Burrito Fajita and the Jessys Traditional margarita. My husband got a mango margarita and I believe the Burrito Supreme. The burritos were huge and I only finished half and my husband ate the whole thing but regretted it and had food coma. They came with a side of rice and beans. The burrito was good - I wish it came with more of the "salad" which is lettuce and sour cream and tomatoes. The margarita was DELICIOUS and I would go back for just the margarita. This place is amazing. We live in Newport News so we don't get over to that side very often. It is hands down the best Mexican we have had since arriving in Virginia 3 years ago. There is not a ton of seating but enough for about 10 parties. I have been here twice now and it's always got people coming and going. The food is outstanding and fresh. Their chips and salsa are really good and different. The chips are very crunchy. I have had their tacos, tamales, and cactus and all are great. The corn tacos come with two tortillas each. They have a meat, cilantro, lime, and onion. Very good! The carditas are to die for. The pork tamale had an amazing flavor and just feels like a comfort food that warms your belly and mind. The cactus was very good too. Overall the ambience is great if want some futbol, great food, and service to please. This place is so good it was a must stop for lunch on my 23d wedding anniversary. I seriously wanted to fall in love with this place. I have heard great things and it's close to our new home. We ordered takeout and got an order of chips and choriqueso, arroz con pollo, burrito supreme with soft beef and chorizo, kids beef taco rice and beans, kids chicken taco rice and beans, and a kids nuggets and fries (for my middle child who doesn't like to try new things). The choriqueso lacked flavor in my opinion and it was quite watery in texture instead of thick and creamy which I have gotten elsewhere. My husbands burrito was just ok in his opinion and they forgot to add the chorizo. My arroz con pollo was ok, but not as flavorful as others I have had at other locations. The kids beef taco wasn't a hit for any of the kids. My daughter enjoyed her chicken taco, and all three kids enjoyed the nuggets and fries the most. They did provide very quick and friendly service which I appreciated. The staff wore masks minus one person in the back. There was dine-in customers separated 6+ feet apart. Yet their food is magnificent! I used to live close by the place and it's an area the police is very busy working. The carne asada is really good. I had it in the Burrito California. Which didn't look like I expected it to. I expected it to be smothered in a cheese sauce but it came wrapped in foil. Definitely not a deal breaker, but unexpected. It's a very small place with limited seating and it was warm in the building so I wouldn't recommend going in a large party, but the food comes fairly quickly so we were in and out before getting super uncomfortable. My husband and I ordered dinner from here after a long day at the beach. We are pretty serious about our tacos and love any opportunity to try street tacos. We thought this place was good to try because of reviews and overall, it was not worth the hype. Here is what we ordered and our thoughts: Al Pastor Street-- 3.5 stars. This is my go to favorite taco with the sweet and salty feel. I enjoyed this one even though it wasn't the best one I ever had. Chorizo Street Taco-- 2 stars. Our tacos were a little burnt and dried out. It was like eating over cooked minced sausage bites with onion and cilantro on top. Also, it was pretty bland. Carnitas Street Taco- 4 stars. This taco shined a little more than the others because it tasted more seasoned. I enjoyed the flavor and the meat was prepared nice. Cabeza Street Taco- 4 stars. It had a nice mix of fatty and lean pieces which was really good with the tomatillos sauce and squeeze of lime. But I should also note that it was more on the bland side, flavor wise. Barbacoa Street Taco- 5 stars. The best taco of the night! It didn't need any sauces to add flavor or moisture. It was just a solid bite. BONUS: Res Hot Salsa- Their hot salsa is truly for the HEAT lovers. I enjoy spicy food and found it to be too much for me. It's no fun if you tongue is numb. BONUS: Corn tortilla! - We upgraded for the homemade corn tortilla. I thought it was worthwhile but my husband didn't agree. I think it's a toss up but why not splurge. Overall, the meats were pretty dry but it could be because it was cooked over the course of the day. I know sometimes the meat can dry out by the end of the day. I had the pleasure of visiting Jessy's Taqueria for lunch with a friend. I read several of the glowing reviews first, but still felt myself cringe a little as I dodged potholes driving through the strip-mall parking lot. Their signage is bright and welcoming, definitely showing they are one the "new kid on the block." We walked in and were greeted and seated quickly. For a weekday midafternoon in October there was actually a good bit of people that made their way in and out of the restaurant. Since the atmosphere isn't what people rave about, it wasn't a surprise that most people coming and going were taking their orders to-go. Their menu was a little overwhelming. There is just so much variety! Truthfully, I had a hard time focusing. Finally I narrowed the massive menu down to two options and asked for my server's recommendation. Since I chose a mole dish or a cheese dish he didn't really have an opinion on which would be "better." I just flipped a mental coin and went with the mole enchiladas. While I was there I heard two different tables ask the server for a recommendation or to help them decide between 2-3 items. I am wondering if maybe he was new, because he didn't have an answer for any of us. If you are just as indecisive as I am you may want to bring a coin- or maybe he would play rock, paper, scissors with you to help you decide. Our food arrived quickly and my mole enchiladas were great! They were some of the best I have had in the area. The chicken was well seasoned and the sauce was abundant! They don't go crazy with the portions of the rice or bean sides, which I appreciated. My friend got the steak fajitas and we were both blown away by the portion size and amount of steak! This was definitely the star of our table. Fajitas always have such a fun, dramatic entrance too. When we were getting ready to leave I found out my friend had never tried flan before. They have coconut, chocolate, and traditional flan. For this visit we went for the traditional, but I am definitely going to grab the chocolate flan sometime. This was so creamy and delicious! Definitely worth saving room for! I noticed some of the reviews mentioned that they don't serve alcohol, it seems this has changed since they first opened. They had a blackboard full of sweet drink options. Probably not one of the top five places I would go if I was wanting a drink though. I'm lucky enough to work close to this location so I've been in for lunch. True, it's not the nicest part of being close to the beach, but I haven't seen any issues or ever felt uncomfortable during the day. The food is quite tasty! My boss loves authentic tortas and was the one who found this place before I ever knew they opened this location. He raves about the alambre telera. I prefer my go-to of choice - the shrimp tacos are awesome with the right amount of spice. Topped with super fresh veggies and avocado. It made for a perfect lunch. I was slightly disappointed to have received them on flour tortillas after asking for corn. The service was decent, but it was slow getting refills and also difficult after we ate to get our check and pay. It wasn't due to the guest count as we were 1 of only 3 tables at the time. Celebrating six months this December. The third Jessy's at the Oceanfront has a secret weapon...Mom. Nothing has changed with regard to my opinion of the area, it's sketchy with a shelter adjacent. Even on this visit I saw transients walking about in the lot and sidewalks. The lot and walk clean as opposed to previous review debris. Service was excellent and the staff patiently assisted me on finding the perfect dish. This location has the owners Mom working in the kitchen which is the secret weapon. It's her authentic recipes that all three of Jessy's utilize and the reason they are so successful. The Oceanview location was featured on DDD over the Summer. My order...Burrito Supreme / Al-Pastor (pork w/ onions & pineapple) Oaxaca Cheese, rice, beans lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, smothered in salsa verde. Side of rice & beans. Paired w/ a Mexican Coca-Cola. To die for and a bargain. You will find an almost identical menu to Oceanview. The Norfolk location Jessy's Taco Bistro is more upscale dining and the dishes priced accordingly. Still no alcohol license. 3+, rounding up with the authentic dishes priced rock bottom.
