Chris James Cellars has two tasting locations: one in McMinnville and another on the estate in Carlton. We opted for the estate location on a nice sunny day. Our host, Dustin, was exceptionally inviting, knowledgeable, and attentive. Dustin's expertise in explaining the nuances of the grapes, the terroir, and the winemaker's journey added a rich layer of depth to our tasting. His captivating storytelling deepened my appreciation for this winery. The estate has both indoor and outdoor seating options. While the indoor area is rather limited, the outdoor seating is spacious and beautiful. Overlooking the vineyard and surrounding nature, it's the perfect spot to relax, especially on a sunny day. The serene ambiance of the vineyard enhances the overall tasting experience. They offer snacks for an extra purchase, but you can also bring your own food to enjoy with the tasting, making it feel like the best picnic ever. I went with a group of eight people, and the spacious outdoor seating, generous tasting pours, and excellent selection made everything perfect. During our visit, we had the opportunity to sample a wide array of wines. Each wine we tasted was unique and delicious, showcasing the winery's commitment to quality and variety. Many of their wines use neutral oak barrels for fermentation, allowing a well-rounded balance between the fruitiness of the berries and the subtle oak aromas. Chris James Cellars is known for its diverse varietals, which is quite refreshing in an Oregon dominated by Pinot and Chardonnay. We also spotted many different grapes native to Italy, influenced by the winemaker's family's origin. Every wine we tried was distinctive and flavorful, making it hard to pick a favorite. We ended up buying a bottle of Lagrein, a wine native to northern Italy that I had never tried or heard of before. I look forward to exploring more wines, which I have not tried, from Chris James Cellars. I highly recommend this winery to anyone looking to explore the diverse and high-quality wines that Oregon has to offer.

If you check out the wines on their website, you'll see an extensive list, with a very wide range, including Pinot, Dolcetto, Syrah, Tempranillo, Zin, Cabs, Chardonnay, Blancs, and some sparkling wines. And that's only a portion of what's available. My flight was excellent, so much so, that I bought a couple of bottles. I had a great server, Candace, and had the opportunity to talk to her husband, Jeff, who was sitting next to me. A very friendly place. I opted for inside seating because it was hot that day, and I was already roasting from eating atop the McMenamin's rooftop bar. This place was way more my speed. A five-star experience.

This place is located at the top of hill. We sat on outdoor seating. We really enjoyed the view and weather. The wines that we had for tasting are typical Oregon wines. We enjoyed the bubble and their dessert wine. The bubble is very smooth. I love the way to taste inside my mouth. The dessert wine is so unique and not too sweet. However it is flavorful. This was our last stop on our Sunday trip and the wine and sunset did not disappoint. Nicholas expertly guided us through our flight providing us with the story of the wine, and even treated us to a few pours of port. The peaceful Japanese design, surrounded by rolling vineyard views, made it feel like a mini escape.
