One of my ALL TIME favorite tasting rooms! We visited years ago and I've been dreaming about it ever since... so while visiting in laws in Portland and taking the kids to the Wings and Waves Waterpark... I found a way to break away for a tiny bit to do a tasting at R Stuart & Company Winery, and I'm SO glad I did! Our poorer was amazing and I could have sat in there talking wine all day (and know I'm lame...)!!! The wine is SO good. The only downside is that the bottle if you're not a wine club member (which too pricy in its own right) are very expensive, so you can't walk out of there with everything you'd want. But the tasting experience is divine. They had some really interesting ones this time and I'm sure that changes every time you do. If you're anywhere near the area - check them out! read more

Biggest shout out to Nora. We went to R Stuart's tasting room for a flight and had the great pleasure of having Nora lead us through the tasting. This was the first stop we made in McMinneville for a wine vacation and we couldn't have asked for a better start. Nora was knowledgeable, professional, had so many great stories, and of course was really fun to talk to! She also clearly has a deep passion for the industry and has an expansive knowledge of the terroir and network of the valley. The wine was delicious and incredibly unique, the White Sky in particular was unlike anything I've had before. Big ups to the Tempernillo. That was by far the most dynamic red I've had in quite a while and would be able to pair that with almost anything. Of course the 2016 Reserve Menefee was insane; you need to try it if nothing else. I figure when in McMinnville, why not explore more? Amanda, my bartender, was super friendly and really knowledgeable about all of their wines. She was losing her voice from the busy day, but she still took the time to talk with me and explain all of the wines. My favorite was the Love Pinot Noir. It smelled and tasted like Christmas. We dropped in for an unplanned tasting on a quiet, early Sunday afternoon. Having been to a few wineries in Dundee over the weekend looking for good Pinot noir, we were pleasantly surprised that the best Pinot tasting for us ended up being here in town...and for the best price too! We did two reserved flights of Pinot noir, and at $20/pp, it was incredibly affordable compared to tastings at the vineyards. All 4 reserved wines in the flight were robust and simply delicious. The experience was only made all the more pleasant thanks to the wonderful service and relaxing ambiance. Danielle was wonderful and very thoughtful, going as far as writing down the recipe for the yummy cashews that we snacked on with our wines. Thoroughly recommend for lovers of Pinot noir, if nothing else to appreciate Rob Stuart's experimentation with his wines. And definitely go for the reserve tasting. For only an extra $5, it's more than worth it. We'll return for sure. read more

We were humiliated and embarrassed, as the waitress refused to offer an explanation beside the point that she "didn't feel comfortable" serving us. We happily went across the street to Terra Vina and had a great experience. But we will never return to R Stuart & Co Winery. read more

I see that our friend, Wayne "Wayne Gorsek" G. was in the house at R. Stuart, yesterday, and gave R Stu one star, as he has done with other "terrible" places in McMinnville, like The Bitter Monk, and Thistle. R. Stuart has amazing staff, wonderful wine, and terrific service, and if the biggest problem for a place is that it is sometimes hard to get in the door, then what a terrible problem to have! It turns out that Wayne showed up at R. Stuart after hours, and he doesn't like the fact that stores close when he wants them to be open. But let's get to Wayne, whose mother apparently did not give him the love and attention he wanted as a child, and now seems to walk into places with a Las Vegas-sized chip on his shoulder and then spawn one of his scintillating, three sentence, reviews designed to make himself feel like the Mighty Oz of reviewers. He has well over 300 reviews, and he is so nuanced in his reviews, that he merely cuts and pastes tried and true sentences like "Awful service! Terrible place!" (I lost count of how many times he uses those sentences, or a derivative of them, in the first three pages of his mind-numbingly awful reviews alone) and then threatens to never return (god, please, could you promise to do that for whole cities...?). After that, there are the quality of writing issues. At R. Stuart, he promises to "vote my wallet at someplace..." Brilliant, Wayne! I too, shall "vote my wallet," and someday it will be in the Whitehouse. At other times he is angry with the "severs," or complains that he was told that his piano is too big (when a guy is told he has a big piano, just take it as a compliment, Wayne). An entire restaurant is reviewed as, "they are a complete idiot...?" And finally, there are the reviews that are shocking. Chuck E. Cheese's doesn't have great service and the beer I always wanted, and the games are old? Unbelievable. Comcast has customer service issues? WHO KNEW. You flew American Airlines, and they changed the gate on you, and now you know why they went bankrupt? You are a business genius. You did not like the food quality at McDonald's (which you review more than once)? Mind-blowingly insightful. Baskin Robbins has CORN SYRUP in their ice cream? I shall vote my wallet elsewhere! So for the rest of you, if you want a pleasant experience for a glass of wine, wonderful staff, a relaxing environment, come in to R. Stuart. And while you are there, give a toast in honor of Wayne G., who is most likely out somewhere having a miserable time, doing review drive-byes of perfectly lovely places. read more

R Stuart runs a decent little tasting room in downtown McMinnville that's (thankfully!) open past the 5pm hour (when most other tasting rooms close) so it's a good spot to hit when you're on your way back in to town from your day of driving around to wineries. They offer tastes through the Big Fire and R Stuart labels as well as some snacky-time treats like cheese puffs, crab cakes, cheese plates and... well... what wine bars tend to serve. Nibbles (god I loathe that word, but it works here). The girl running the wine bar on the evening we were in was snarky and fun. She was doing everything - pouring, making food, etc - so nothing moved fast around there, but when you're in for a tasting, it shouldn't be a sprint. Just be aware that if you're looking for a fakey reception, you'll get something a little more real here. But that fits with the brand. R Stuart's wines are tasty. Some are a little high priced for the flava, but I did like one of the cuvees enough to score a bottle. I've tasted these wines a bunch and have been a fan of the Big Fire as a decent bang-for-your-buck pinot. It's more of an all-occasion wine, but I think that's what it's designed to be. For those looking for whites, this room offers a whites-only tasting (with one rosé) and they even (if I recall correctly) have a sparkling on hand. The other tasting routes you through their reds. Either way, you get a decent amount of wine for the price. read more

To be honest, we had a wonderful time at R Stuart. I would have given a five star review had it not been for the very last interaction that I had (with the man who I was told was the owner's son). We ordered a bottle of wine to go which was listed at $22. It was charged on our bill as $25. When I pointed out the discrepancy to this man, he took our bill to look into it. He came back to the table and said, "I'm sorry, the price is $25. Those menus must be old." I told him that since the menu was given to us on arrival, and is the menu that we ordered everything off of during our visit, that I thought he should honor the price on the menu. He said, "Well the other menu shows the price as $25, which is the correct price." He refused to take the $3 off. Who makes that kind of business decision? I went back up to him as we were leaving and told him that we'd had a wonderful time up until that experience and that I thought it was a very strange move on his part not to honor the price that is clearly listed IN PRINT on his own menu. He didn't budge on his position, and clearly didn't care what I thought. If you come to this establishment, don't count on the prices on the menu to be honored. Prior to the experience with the son with questionable character/business practices, we had a great time. The food and wine was great, our server was a pleasure, and the atmosphere was great. I would recommend this place wholeheartedly, I would just recommend avoiding any interactions with the owner's son. He will certainly be the low point of your experience. read more

I also found out their appetizers and recipes are provided by Nicks across the street, One bias star added right there alone. R. Stuart doesn't have their own vineyard, they buy their grapes from all over Washington and Oregon. I've finally gotten a taste for Pinot Noirs. It has taken me over three years of being ripped away from my Bordeaux heavy home and brought to Oregon where Pinot is king. The Big Fire Pinot Noir is my standard for judging all other pinots. That is my "throwdown" wine of choice. I can drink a bottle to myself without even thinking. The reserve pinots R. Stuart offers only get better. I'm a member now. Awesome tasting room on beautiful 3rd St in downtown McMinnville. Super friendly & helpful staff, delicious wines and, for the Willamette Valley, great value wine tasting at $12 for the classic flight (4 wines inc a white, a rose & 2 reds), with generous pours. Our server (didn't catch her name but she was ace!) also recommended we partake of their Barrel Tasting option for a couple days ahead via reservation, which was simply fantastic. Our "guide" Casee was phenomenal; friendly, funny, extremely knowledgable & someone you could tell loved a) their job, but b) their employer even moreso. It was refreshing to see someone so passionate about their work, and my wife & I enjoyed the tour/tasting immensely. We got to try a selection of samples direct from the different barrels of their different vintages from different growing areas held in their facility, with Casee explaining all the subtle nuances. Then we all headed back to the tasting room to try the barrel releases in their bottle format, along with a couple of other offerings (sparkling, port, rose), all of which were excellent. To top things off Casee & Sierra (who took over at the tasting room) both helped us with places to see & things to do for the rest of our time in the Pacific Northwest. If the owners of this establishment are reading this then you should be proud of your staff. Located in the center of McMinnville this makes for a great little place to stop pretty much any time of day. They have espresso and coffee of good quality for a little earlier, and a great line up of wines for later. I like going in the afternoon and having both (coffee and wine!). There is also little tasty bites to keep you satisfied. I especially like their sparkling rose and pinot noir. They also have cool wine club events like dinners with Bent Brick and Aviary, and often participate in community celebrations, making them a favorite with the locals. What a gem! We trekked to McMinnville for dinner on our last night in Oregon, and stopped in here for a pre-dinner drink. It was my birthday and I was given a glass of champagne on the house immediately to start the celebrating. I sampled a flight of Pinots after the champagne, and was filled in on the qualities of each wine as I did so. Every member of the staff was amazingly friendly, and we talked for the better part of an hour about wine, work, and other life events. We were even slightly late to our dinner reservation, the conversation was so enjoyable. I definitely suggest stopping in here for some wine if you're in the area! read more
