This is rare business and skill set and one, unfortunately, that is slowly going away. I hope it doesn't for this particular one. I needed an axe sharpened for my axe throwing tournament and a chainsaw sharpened. I found Nobile listed on Yelp, made a call, and soon was on my way. It is harder to find businesses such as this one that allows you to use and repair tools so that they have a long life. One of my saws belonged to my father and is probably more than 70 years old. I can't say enough good things about this small business. Remember the old Ginsu knife commercial when a tomato was dropped from on high and the knife cut it in the air? Those are my knives now. But before I continue gushing, let me say this: they DO NOT offer same day service. Be prepared to leave your knives for a day or two. They are a very busy shop. Odd location- you can park in the front or swing around for quick drop off and free parking in the alley right by their door. I brought 9 (decent) kitchen knives - some serrated and some straight edge and one pair of kitchen shears and was out of there for less than $50. I cook and use my knives every day. Brought our most used knife here. We aren't chefs, but love to cook and cook often. Pros- the knife is SHARP. Definitely did their job. Looks great. Cons- -only open 9-5 on weekdays which made drop off and pick up very challenging (I don't work in the area and my boyfriend's job isn't super flexible) -Drop off Tuesday morning and said it would be ready on Friday. They would call us when it's ready or if we really wanted to pick it up on Friday we should call them first to make sure it's ready. Didn't hear from them. Called them on Monday afternoon and they said it was ready.... - Do not take all your knives at once. You'll be without for a few days so factor that into your decision. We really struggled to find a knife sharpening place in Sacramento. While it's not very convenient I can't complain about the work that was done so we'll probably be back. read more

Pretty cool place, would be the perfect place for a horror movie set. In my quest to get my sushi knives sharpened, I gave this place a shot. Sacramento seems to be lacking in quality knife sharpening services. $4.50 per knife seemed almost too cheap, but they did a great job. 48 hour turn around, walking distance from my office, and one very deep cut on my ring finger. I took some JA Henkels knives here on the recommendation of a professional chef who was teaching a cooking class through the Sac Natural Foods Co-op. I needed the knives back at noon on a specific date for the class. When I called, Nobile Saw Works said it would be no problem to get the knives sharpened in time. Total fail. When I called them just before noon to say I was on my way, they hadn't even started. I told them to forget it, and drove over (fuming) to pick up the unsharpened knives. When I got there, the guy in the back was frantically sharpening my knives. Not only did he do a rushed, uneven, mediocre job, the knives were covered in a sticky, stinky grease that took quite a bit of washing to get rid of. Totally gross. This place is too disorganized for me. I would take my lawnmower blades in here for sharpening (as long as I wasn't in a hurry to get 'em back, I suppose), but I will never again let them touch my knives. read more

Dropped off a few Henkels after receiving a recommendation from a guy at a restaurant supply store. We didn't bring the whole set as we wanted to see how the first few would turn out. Needless to say, we will be bringing anything that can be sharpened to these guys! Our knives were returned wrapped and clean--nothing sticky or weird. It did take a week for the job to be finished so if you do come here plan ahead. The price, quality of work and customer service cannot be beat so really, waiting a week was no problem. read more

Brought my grooming shears in Monday, was informed I'll receive a call before Friday, it's Saturday and I'm calling the shop and knocking on the door. Saturday is the busiest day for grooming. Probably the best sharpening business I have ever been to. The lady handling the calls was supper nice, and helpful. I didn't know what to expect when I showed up, place is a bit daunting but don't let it fool you. They did any amazing job on my Chef knife, and my Santoku knife as well. I wouldn't go anywhere else. The owner was very friendly and helped me through with every issue I had when it came to resizing my carbide bandsaw blade . You can tell many other people also believe in his workmanship because you can see he is very busy and always has many completed orders up by the front that are ready for pick up. I've been to many other places like this around the area for sharpening and blade fixing and I can tell you that this is an absolute gem of a business. It didn't take long to figure out there aren't many places in Sacramento that sharpen knives anymore. I asked a salesperson at Williams-Sonoma, where I buy my kitchen cutlery, and was told "there is no longer a place locally they would recommend". Ugh, so I logged on to Yelp for some peer guidance. After reading the reviews I headed to Nobile and had no trouble finding it thanks to the additional directions in a review. I walked in and must agree, there are a lot of neat things to look at. The gentleman working there was nice, but to the point (I like that). He looked at my poor Henkels knife that had suffered an awful drop and sustained a BIG nick on the cutting edge and said no problem and quoted me a price that was 1/4 of what a local knife factory store had posted on their website. After a little begging he agreed to have my knife ready at 4:30 that day and it was already 3 PM! I quickly paid him before he changed his mind and told him I'd be back soon. Well I couldn't make it back in time but the following morning I returned and my knife was done and well wrapped for its ride home. As though it was the biggest gift under the Christmas tree, I couldn't wait to open it. I got in my car and before the door was closed I had it unwrapped and began checking his work. FLAWLESS! The knife was better than new! No kidding. The nick was gone and a super sharp edge in its place. I could not have asked for a better overall experience and I'm thrilled with the workmanship. He's got a new customer for life. If you have any knives, scissors, blades or saws that need some attention you owe it to yourself to check him out first, you'll be glad you did. read more

I just wanna say that this is one of those places that makes Sacramento unique. It's tucked away in the alley between Alhambra and 30th. As soon as you get out of your car and walk towards the door, the smell of oil and ground metal hits you -- a somewhat unfamiliar fragrance unless you work in a machine shop regularly. On the walls are exemplary examples of old saw blades -- big huge circular blades on down to two-man hand saw blades. It's kind of a setting for a gristly, grinder of a horror movie and probably not where you'd want to be standing when a big shaker earthquake came down, but the shop has total character and is worth popping in just to check it out (say, a quick jaunt from the Limelight). I've had them sharpen an axe and an old 1960s push lawnmower, both of which they did an excellent job and have remained razor sharp after two years of moderate use -- the axe in particular will still split a hair after chopping up numerous limbs (tree, of course) in the woods. I don't have much to compare them to price wise, since there really aren't many places like this left, but it seemed very fair to me. I think the lawnmower was $25 or something and the axe, mebbe $9 or $10 -- well worth the money. I sharpen my own knives, so I haven't used them for that, but they can and will sharpen everything to a fine hone. Turn around was really quick as well. read more

They did a expert job, I build fence and having these folks sharpen my tools makes a huge difference on the amount of time it takes me to dig a hole for a post or cut thru wood with my saw. The entrance and a couple parking spots are located in the alley between I St and J St. Had an axe and hatchet sharpened, and now I can actually chop again. Great place for knife sharpening! I dropped off my entire set of kitchen knives with short notice right around the holidays, and they turned them around quickly for a great price (at least 1/3rd less than I have paid in the past). The cutting edges feel like new, I am not an expert but I think they did a great job. Nice friendly staff with a mom-and-pop feel; they called me to make sure I would be able to come pick up my knives before they closed early for the holiday. It's kind of a hole in the wall, although the address is J street, their entrance is kind of in the back, park around the block and enter from I St. I will definitely be going back next time my knives are dull! read more
